Post Pandemic We are pleased to again present the Annual Brushware Summer Buyers’ Guide. It’s an exciting time to welcome new companies to the fold with our biggest edition of the year. As usual, we went all in and have packed the issue with a wide range of insightful and compelling articles.

One topic I’ve been wanting to get into for the Brushware community is cybersecurity. While the past 15 months of the global pandemic have been both challenging and heartbreaking, we’ve also been hit with events both related and unrelated to COVID-19 that have been shocking at times, while impacting our lives, our workflow and the economy.

Behind the headlines, work goes on as companies rise to conquer the challenges and move ahead with business. Evidently though, that applies to hackers and scam specialists as well. Cybersecurity has become an increasing concern and notably, global spending in the area increased from $40.8 billion in 2019 to more than $54 billion in 2020, according to research firm Canalys. The firm also says data breaches and ransomware attacks reached an all-time high in 2020. Over 12 billion records were compromised and ransomware attacks increased by nearly 60 percent.

It’s a growing threat for businesses and I encourage all of our readers to dig into Phillip Perry’s Cyber Security feature on page 22 as he provides insights and strategies from experts to secure your company’s digital infrastructure.

Moving on to the brush industry, we are pleased to have Ralph Rosenbaum from Stainless Steel Products participate in our continuing Brushware Profile series where we get some insights on how the wire supplier has built his business and worked through the recent challenges. Along the same lines, we are also excited to present our second installment of the Industry Pulse with Nadja Essler from ZAHN Pinsel GmbH as she gives us her thoughts on the paintbrush and paint products sector.

Widening the picture a bit to look at manufacturing overall, our supply chain columnist Lisa Anderson tackles one of the key issues for manufacturers in the aftermath of the pandemic as she provides her take on the skills gap and the critical need for companies to be proactive in addressing the challenge.

Looking back through the issue, I notice mentions of “post pandemic” quite often and while we are by no means beyond COVID-19, it is at least encouraging to hear the discussion and thoughts around what comes next for the business overall. Precision Brush Makes Mark On the World of NFT Collectibles

P

recision Brush was the first industrial brush manufacturer to begin accepting payment in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin. Now the company is breaking molds once again and propelling the industry into the future by creating the world’s first industrial brush NFT (nonfungible token). Precision Brush’s artwork “Brush Happiness” went up for auction on the digital exchange OpenSea in April and May. See the piece online at bit.ly/BrushHappiness.

So what is an NFT? The acronym stands for “nonfungible token.” Fungible essentially means replaceable or interchangeable. So, a nonfungible token is by definition irreplaceable and singularly unique. As one journalist so aptly wrote: “It’s a digital asset plus certificate of authenticity plus legal rights all rolled into one. Buying an NFT means purchasing a hacker-resistant, public proof of ownership over a specific digital asset.”

In December 2017, a hoard of digital cats almost ground the Ethereum network to a halt. A game called CryptoKitties had just launched in November 2017, and users started spending millions of dollars to breed and grow digital cats — some of the first known NFTs. In January 2018, the ERC721 Non-Fungible Token Standard was proposed.

There’s only one original Mona Lisa painting. There are countless reproductions, both digital and physical, but there is only one original. That’s what an NFT is — an undeniable original.

Cryptocurrency was the natural forerunner to NFTs. Bitcoin revolutionized money because it created scarce digital value for the very first time.

However, digital scarcity alone is not sufficient to create a functioning monetary system.

Each token must be fungible — interchangeable. In other words, a recipient should not care which bitcoin they receive or where it comes from as long as it is in the correct amount.

Fungibility is a crucial characteristic to many traditional markets, including currencies, commodities and precious metals, and open blockchain platforms. Every Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ether, XRP or Zcash must be interchangeable. Most core blockchain protocols (digital records of transactions) have built-in fungibility from the outset at the protocol level. However, for many of these platforms to evolve and grow, fungibility also needed to be incorporated into the application layer.

This was facilitated by the creation of new token standards, such as Ethereum’s ERC-20 in 2015, which allowed for the

rapid creation of a constellation of fungible and interoperable tokens on top of ethereum. Taking this idea a step further, people started to imagine a world of assets that were both scarce and unique. These could be tokens, images, artwork, virtual game accessories or even digital collectibles. A holder could use the blockchain to prove ownership and utilize these assets, but they would accrue unique properties and value.

Since then, blockchains have been created to leverage NFTs in the world of gaming, digital art, collectibles, music, financial products — and now industrial brush art!

WHY IT MATTERS How is this valuable you may ask? First of all, it is an awesome piece of art! And as those in the brush manufacturing world know all too well, brushes make so many things in our lives possible.

In short, brushes make people happy and creating an industrial brush NFT memorializes this essential truth for all time.

If you’re still having trouble wrapping your head around why NFTs are special and how they work, think about it this way: There’s only one original Mona Lisa painting. HOW TO GET INTO NFTS Purchase an NFT: Create an account on the digital exchange and directly buy NFTs, such as “Happiness depends upon Brushes.” Just be aware that, like any other collectible — from art, to real estate, to memorabilia — an NFT's value is in the eye of the beholder. The non-fungibility of these tokens can be a major value-add, but any given NFT can ultimately be highly illiquid. There’s no guarantee that you could sell an NFT quickly.

Buy DeFi Tokens: A more predictable way to participate in the world of NFTs is to buy tokens that are used to power its popular marketplaces. DeFi (Decentralized Finance) tokens are an ecosystem of different financial applications that are built on blockchain networks. The Ethereum blockchain has been the most popular to build on so far because of its smart contract capabilities. Most of the main access points still run on ethereum (ETH).

IT’S DIGITAL. IS IT VALUABLE? Everyone is familiar with baseball card collecting and it is well-known that the first baseball cards sell for huge amounts of money — but NFT collectibles are digital. Are they truly valuable? To answer this question, here’s a fact that might shock you: Revenue from selling digital baseball card packs has surpassed that of physical cards. NFTs are quickly gaining in popularity, with the recent 30-day sales volume on the top five marketplaces totaling more than $560 million; total sales for the entirety of 2020 were $78 million.

So yes, NFTs are valuable, but like their physical collectible predecessors (Beanie Babies, anyone?), they are only as valuable as they are perceived to be. FEIBP Delays 62nd Congress to 2022 In early April, the European Brushware Federation officially announced the pushback of the 62nd FEIBP Congress to September 21-24, 2022. In the announcement, the FEIBP says, “… the industry might be in a relatively stable situation as it concerns the customer markets, but it is facing unprecedented turmoil in the raw materials markets and transport disruption. The emphasis has changed although the impact of COVID-19 continues (for) our businesses and daily life. No one knows when things are getting back to normal, with lockdown measures tightened in many European countries. Vaccination processes make slow progress and the virus is still not under control.”

Noting the reluctance of sponsors and the uncertainty around booking hotel and travel arrangements for attendees, the FEIBP board was forced to push the 62nd FEIBP Congress for a second time to 2022. The FEIBP will instead hold a virtual general assembly on October 14, 2021, in the afternoon, similar to the approach for 2020. Prior to the general assembly, the FEIBP Working Groups will have meetings with special items and/or speakers to be included in the program.

Interbrush Pushes Back to 2024 Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe GmbH & Co. KG (FWTM) announced on April 29 the cancellation of the 2022 Interbrush tradeshow, which was set to take place May 4-6, 2022, at Messe Freiburg, Germany. The exhibition for the brush and paintbrush industry normally opens its doors every four years to 7,000 visitors from more than 90 countries.

In March 2020, rapidly increasing numbers of COVID-19 infections across Europe and the rest of the world led FWTM to postpone the 2020 edition to 2022.

FWTM says many discussions have been held with exhibitors, visitors and representatives of the American Brush Manufacturers Association (ABMA), the German Brush Manufacturers’ Association and the European Brushware Federation (FEIBP) about plans for the 2022 Interbrush show.

The event has to be planned well in advance, as the exhibiting machine manufacturers require a lead time of about 12 to 14 months. Everyone involved in those discussions expressed uncertainty as to whether visitors to Interbrush would be able to travel to Germany in May of 2022 without being affected

by COVID-related health and safety restrictions. Additionally,

there was also concern about attendance even if there were no restrictions.

“We have great hopes that we will be able to return to a certain level of normalcy by the end of 2021. But we cannot be absolutely sure. With regard to economic viability, we must currently work to protect organizers and exhibitors alike and ensure that they do not make investments that will not pay off. We have therefore reached the joint decision to cancel Interbrush as we had planned it for the coming year,” says Daniel Strowitzki, CEO of FWTM. “We regret that we are forced to postpone the event once again in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this is the responsible decision to make in the interest of the health of all exhibitors, visitors and staff.”

The next Interbrush is set to take place in 2024 in close collaboration with the international professional industry associations and the leading exhibitors. The exhibition is scheduled for May 24-26, 2024.

TV Coverage Highlights Gordon Brush Commitment to the City of Industry Ken Rakusin of Gordon Brush was featured in a recent TV news report by Renee Eng on the local Spectrum News 1 channel. The piece covers Rakusin’s start at Gordon Brush in 1990 when he took the position of president and noted that he was unsure of what he had gotten into – the company was based out of a dark and rundown 15,000 square foot facility.

“We had 22 employees. I mean, this was a little, tiny company that was on the verge of going out of business, and every year, for the next six years, I was able to double the company’s profits,” Rakusin says.

Other states recruit Rakusin to set up shop, but he remains committed to keeping jobs in the City of Industry, California, in spite of the trend over the past few decade that saw an increasing number of manufacturers shift operations overseas for cheaper labor.

“Nobody that works in a factory that when they were going through school said, ‘Gee, I want to make brushes for a living,’” Rakusin said. “It doesn’t happen.”

The goal is to keep existing manufacturers, which provide about 17,000 local jobs, or 25 percent of total employment, and attract new ones to the city.

McClaskey says the council is studying the top industries in the city, determining which ones have the potential to grow and learning the demographics of the best manufacturing workers.

“Where do they live? What is their family size? How old are they? Where are they from? We’ve done a lot of things in the past through community colleges, and we’re finding that that’s not the demographic for a really good manufacturing worker,” she says.

“There are so many people that college is not their first choice of what they should do in their life,” Rakusin says. “They might want to work with their hands.

They have this great mechanical mind, or they have this great mind where they love to see machines work and operate and design machines.”

He ultimately wants to see more education in the U.S. geared toward those who work best with their hands, preparing them for blue-collar jobs critical to the economy.

ABMA Reports on Passage of Dick Noon The ABMA reports that Richard Lawrence “Dick” Noon, age 89, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2021.

Born in Glen Ridge, N.J., Noon was a resident of Ridgewood for 50 years before moving to Hillsdale. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean War. Noon graduated from NYU School of Business and went on to serve as CEO and President of

several companies, including Avdel Corporation of Parsippany, N.J., Rae Metal of Cleveland, Ohio, and RL Noon Associates of Clifton, N.J., before retiring in 2013. He was a former member of the Upper Montclair Country Club.

He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Beverly on October 14, 2010.

A loving and devoted father, Noon is survived by his four children: Thomas of Lakewood Ranch, Fla., Brian of Chandler, Ariz., Brenda Chinn of Haymarket, Va., and Barbara Patterson of Cape Coral, Fla. Also surviving are his six grandchildren: Ryan, Kara, Kyle, Cheryl, William and Shana and his four great-grandchildren: Ella, Nora, Hayden and William.

Post Pandemic Skills Gap

According to Prudential’s latest Pulse of the American Worker Survey, one in four workers plan to look for a job at a different company once the pandemic has subsided. Additionally, a recent Robert Half survey found that 38 percent of workers feel stuck in their careers, and an EY survey found that more than half of employees globally would quit their jobs if not provided post-pandemic flexibility. Clients and colleagues are starting to see a surge of employees “on the move.” What are you doing to retain your top talent and attract new talent?

There is no doubt that clients and colleagues are seeing this trend in action. For example, a few clients had employees leave because they decided to transition careers as the pandemic made them rethink their goals. Several clients and colleagues had people leave to retire early; they re-examine their life and decided they had enough money saved or the stress was no longer worth it. Other clients had employees leave for more attractive jobs since they were less dependent on geography with remote work opportunities. It also made people rethink what is important and re-evaluate companies, managers and careers. From that point of view, progressive manufacturers gained in popularity as people saw additional value in essential businesses.

The pandemic also brought up the issue of proximity, and so manufacturers quickly redefined work to meet social distancing guidelines and reconfigured spaces to account for new requirements. In addition, the use of technology has increased significantly as employers are looking for ways to automate key processes and better support continuous manufacturing with fewer quality and supply issues. With the increased use of technology in manufacturing, the need has increased for highskilled resources to install, maintain and improve these systems – yet there are limited resources available.

Thus, we have entered a new era of the skills gap. Scarce resources have become the norm. As more and more baby boomers retire, significant knowledge gaps are occurring. Because executives have been running at a break-neck pace with little to no time for transition, career development and cross-training, this gap will only widen. Similar to backup suppliers, backup resource

plans were largely in name only, and so executives are suddenly ill-prepared to maintain customer service during high levels of transition and turmoil. On the other hand, those executives who are willing to take on risk and hire additional talent are gaining an advantage over their competition.

For example, a client had a key employee decide to retire.

Instead of simply replacing that employee with someone to take over his current responsibilities, they decided to reassess the role and what would help them succeed. After assessing the situation, the client decided to redirect consulting attention to design an upgraded process and hire two resources. Since the client had significant growth opportunities, it made sense to hire a high-skilled resource to upgrade the processes to get ahead of the customer growth opportunities as well as a second resource to support those efforts and make sure the systems were prepared for growth. If they could successfully meet the volume and simultaneously upgrade the processes and use of technology, they would scale the business, further solidify a strong relationship with customers and drive exponentially more profit to the bottom line.

There is a war on talent and only those companies with the best talent will thrive. The key question is whether you will think proactively, evaluate the smartest path forward, take on risk where it makes sense and create a culture that retains your best employees and attracts top talent to your business. PAINTBRUSH & PAINT PRODUCTS SECTOR With the COVID-19 pandemic kicking off a DIY trend that some are projecting to extend through 2021, we took the time to catch up with product manager Nadja Essler of ZAHN Pinsel GmbH to get an update on the paintbrush and paint products sector.

How would you characterize your current volume of sales in the paint products category?

I think we are on target. But there are, of course, a lot of new materials and also shapes for the brushes for craftsmen, which we are currently testing and developing. We are always trying to develop new and better materials and also shapes, which are helpful for easy working.

What has been your best-performing product or line of products in the paint segment over the past 12 months?

We use a special filament – we call it Falbex. With this filament, we have created an all-encompassing program of different types of brushes. For example – flat brush for varnishing, angular liner for the shapes, bent brush, round brush and so on. The specialty of this type of very highquality fiber is that the fine filament will create a smooth surface without leaving any marks.

Are there any specific product areas in the segment that have underperformed in the past 12 months?

No!

How would you project the overall sales/business outlook for the next 12 months for the paint segment?

We are very positive that we will grow in this area. First, we have a lot of new products which we will launch in the next 12 months. And we also have many requests for brushes handmade in Germany that are high quality and also able to incorporate private labeling. And that’s exactly what we offer and what we are!

Can you comment on your biggest challenges over the past year and any current issues?

Currently, our biggest challenge is COVID-19 and faltering raw material supplies – causing long delivery and shipping times. In general, we’ve had some problems in the past. Because we had so many requests, we were not able to give all of them an offer with good delivery times. But we have built a new factory and moved into our new building one and a half years ago. Since then we are able to produce faster and we have also increased our staff levels.

Do you have any unique new product applications or customer scenarios that you would like to share?

We are currently working on news for a few very interesting and innovative products. We will launch them toward the end of summer.

Any final thoughts?

We are always trying to find the perfect solution together with our customers. Whenever they have a special need or application they can come to us and we try to develop the perfect brush for their demands.

profile What year did you start in the industry and how did you get started?

I started in the brush industry in 1995. At the time, I was looking to start my own export company.

A friend of mine, who knew my background, mentioned that he had a friend who was the export manager at Weiler Brush. They were looking for a South American sales rep to sell wire brushes for weld preparation of pipelines. At the time, there were several projects to build natural gas pipelines across South America. I was born in Chile and came to the United States when I was 5 years old.

My sister and I grew up on Long Island in New York. However, my sister moved back to Chile, my father still lives there, and I have a lot of other family members who live there too.

After meeting with the export manager, we subsequently had a meeting with Carl Weiler. After that meeting, the company took a chance on contracting with me in that capacity. Part of the deal was that I would go through their training program to better understand all about brushes. Fortunately, we had some success.

At the time, I also had a contract to export a line of asbestos-replacement industrial fabrics for a company near Philadelphia. This was also somewhat successful.

Nevertheless, I realized I needed to expand my sales to grow my fledgling company. It dawned on me that the two things both companies that I was exporting for had in common, were that they both consumed stainless steel wire. So, I looked for a source overseas and began importing and selling stainless steel wire.

At the time, I was working out of the basement of my house. I will never forget that first delivery of imported wire. A huge tractor-trailer drove up to the front of my house and wiped out part of the tree we had growing.

Then he dropped a 2,400 lb. crate of wire onto the street with a hydraulic lift. I had purchased a pump jack, but I had to push this heavy crate up a slight hill into my garage. It was not fun and my thoughts were that I should have gone into selling pillows.

Favorite part of working in the brush industry: Meeting all of the great people that work in the brush industry. I also enjoy the challenges of solving problems that get thrown at us on occasion.

What is your proudest career or company accomplishment?

We have several company accomplishments that I am proud of.

I would say the one that stands out the most is a project that we were involved with in prototyping for about three years to help a company invent a better system for processing biofuels. After small orders here and there over that time period, they received venture capital funding and we received our largest order ever. In order to deliver in a timely manner, we had to build machinery to ramp up and produce within the six-month time frame they requested. We delivered and we were paid.

Key challenges presented by the pandemic and how did SSP solve for those challenges?

The first challenge was to figure out how to stay in business after Governor Cuomo abruptly shut down all “nonessential” businesses in New York State. In total, our company was closed for four days. During that time, I began to communicate with our most important customers that we needed written support to help prove that we were “essential” suppliers to other “essential” businesses. Once that was achieved, we had a meeting with our leadership team to formulate a strategy for a responsible re-opening.

We downloaded and used an OSHA guide for COVID-19 workplaces. We sanitized our facility, developed new operating procedures, used letters proposed by the ABMA for allowing employee travel in case they were detained, purchased sanitary supplies for distribution to each employee in the form of a kit, and more.

Another key challenge was the slow down in business once our order backlog was completed. We were very slow from May until December. However, we took the opportunity to purchase more wire drawing machines and complete the building of other machines for processing wire.

There is speculation that even after the pandemic, we’ll potentially not get back to the “old normal.”

What do you see as permanent changes ahead for SSP and the industry in general?

Permanent changes are difficult to predict. More people will work from home. I believe there is a greater awareness of the need for a more balanced work/life schedule. Although we all want stability and predictability, I think the last year or so has proven that the world is constantly changing and we need to be able to adapt. I also believe we will get back to the old normal. It will just take time.

Recruiting skilled workers overall and also young workers has been stated as a concern in the industry. How do you think that is best addressed?

That is a concern. Compensation and benefits are important drivers to successfully land the kinds of workers that will perform best. Training is important as well. At SSP, we participate in a New York State-sponsored apprenticeship program that combines work and community collegelevel courses. An apprentice signs a contract in advance knowing what their compensation levels will be as they reach milestones in the program. The tuition is paid by New York State and our company agrees to a flexible work schedule that allows the apprentice to go to classes. At the end of the program, the apprentice is rewarded a fungible certificate, such as Industrial Manufacturing Technician. Our company, hopefully, gets a more loyal worker than would otherwise be the case with an employee with a valuable skill set. This program is promoted at the high school level by coordinators of the apprenticeship program as a hybrid alternative vs. going only to college or only going to work.

Are there any new products or initiatives for SSP that you would like to share?

We have expanded our capabilities of providing non-ferrous wire. As the economy has re-awakened, our company is now operating 24 hours a day. We are also looking to expand our footprint at a larger facility. However, finding good industrial space at reasonable prices on Long Island has been a real challenge. There is very little inventory of available industrial buildings at this time.

Do you have any key business/leadership tips out there for younger people in the industry looking to ascend to a leadership role?

Stay energized! Try to see around corners. Sometimes, you need to play offense and sometimes you need to play defense.

If you are standing still you are not going anywhere.

I believe leaders need to really want to be leaders. Without proper internal motivation, it is just a wish, not an achievable goal. They need to “get” what leadership is. It is not all about the “self.” It is more about the stakeholders that need to be served. And they need to be able to deliver. Without competency, leaders are destined to fail.

Do you have any go-to metrics that you use both for tracking the brushware industry and/or the overall economy?

Published metrics are historical in nature. They are good for tracking long-term trends. Generally, I like to look at futures prices for nickel and copper as well as share with colleagues what they and what we are seeing. I like to read articles from various sources, including Bloomberg and other reputable news outlets.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I like to play pickleball and lift weights to stay fit. I also like to play chess, read and travel.

Do you have any pop culture favorites?

I have always enjoyed an eclectic mix of upbeat music — heavy metal, electronic, classic rock, dance music, even some classical music. Michael Lewis writes some fascinating books.

Currently, I’m reading Hot Seat, by Jeff Immelt, ex-CEO of General Electric. He took over the job from Jack Welch on September 10th, 2001, and the next day was the attack on September 11th. This had profound consequences for GE.

Are there sports and/or teams that you follow?

My favorite team would be the NY Rangers ice hockey team.

Although I enjoy watching football, I can’t say watching my NY Giants has been fun the last few years, but hope springs eternal!

Do you have a business travel tip?

Bring earplugs, plan ahead and make use of Wi-Fi on airplanes.

What is one thing about you that people might find surprising?

Hmmm. My weight fell 90 lbs. from peak to trough a few years back. During that time, I started cooking a bit. I still watch what I eat in terms of macro and micronutrients and drink between 70-100 ounces of water every day.

What have you learned — in life or in the industry?

The only constant is change. And the more comfortable one can get with that notion, the easier it is to see change coming and adapt.

CYBER SECURITY How to Counter Fraud in a Digital World

Businesses face a growing risk of financial loss from fraudulent internet transactions. The right internal operating procedures can reduce an organization’s vulnerability to social engineering techniques commonly employed to access company funds and data. When breaches do occur, dedicated insurance policies will mitigate the damages.

hen the controller of a California business received an email from the CEO requesting an immediate wire transfer to a vendor, the transaction seemed routine. Only after the money was sent was it discovered that the vendor was not due such a payment. And worse, the funds had not been received.

W

An investigation revealed that the sender of the request had been a thief using an email address misleadingly similar to the targeted company’s top executive. The supplied banking credentials were actually those of the crook’s account in China. Acting quickly, the controller called the overseas bank to see if the payment could be canceled. What he heard allowed him to breathe a sigh of relief: Because the funds had arrived on a Chinese bank holiday they had not yet been credited to the thief ’s account. The company was able to recover its funds.

COSTLY FRAUD While our opening story has a happy ending, most businesses targeted by so-called Business Email Compromise (BEC) fraud are not so lucky. Of the 11 percent of respondents in a recent survey from consulting firm AP Now that reported losing money to such fraud, only 3.2 percent recovered all the stolen funds. The fraud is increasing rapidly as thieves have learned to cleverly disguise C-level executives’ identities. “Crooks know it’s very, very easy for people to miss slight changes in email addresses,” says Mary S. Schaeffer, AP Now’s president (www.ap-now.com).

Reports from the FBI, the IRS and other agencies show that cyber fraud poses a growing threat to businesses. While many thieves want money, others want data such as company marketing plans or customer information for identity theft. Losing control of the latter can be especially costly. “The extent of liability for customer data loss depends on the severity of the incident,” says Diane D. Reynolds, partner at New Yorkbased McElroy Deutsch (www.mdmc-law.com). “Not only may a breach require notification under state and possibly federal regulations but there are also costs involved with the ongoing need to monitor the results of the breach, clean-up the system, and deal with negative public relations.”

Not only large companies are at risk. “Criminals often target smaller businesses because their protections are typically not as strong,” says Schaeffer. “They are likely to have older, unsafe technology and lack the security personnel to keep software updated.”

Fueling the rise in cyber fraud is the growing digitalization of business transactions, a long-term trend given further impetus by a greater reliance on electronic communications during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Flaws in firewalls and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), as well as in videoconferencing systems have exposed more businesses to incursions,” says Robert M. Travisano, an attorney in the litigation practice of Epstein Becker Green (www.ebglaw.com).

The rapid expansion of devices on the typical employer’s computer network has given cyber actors still more opportunities.

REDUCING RISK WITH CYBER INSURANCE While no business can eliminate the risk of cyber fraud, insurance can save the day when a breach occurs. Many common commercial general liability (CGL) policies already address some areas related to digital transactions.

Security experts, though, advise seeking better protection. “Cyber coverage in existing property policies is often limited,” says Robert M. Travisano, an attorney in the litigation practice of Epstein Becker Green (www.ebglaw.com).

“Moreover, policies can differ from carrier to carrier. It makes sense to shop around for a dedicated cyber policy.”

The typical cyber policy will cover money lost to cyber thieves. In the event of customer data loss, policies may cover breach notification, credit and fraud monitoring services, and the costs associated with restoring and recreating data as well as with hiring a PR firm. Especially important is coverage for business interruption. “Statistics show that most businesses are not back to normal operations for at least one month after an attack,” says Diane D. Reynolds, Partner at New York-based McElroy Deutsch (www.mdmc-law.com).

Even seemingly robust cyber policies may have potentially costly coverage omissions. “Insurance companies, God bless them, are really good at writing policies that are very precise and cover you for exact things,” says Mary S. Schaeffer, President of consulting firm AP Now (www.ap-now.com).

“If you haven’t checked your policy closely, you may not have the coverage that you think you do.”

And what seems like good coverage at one point may not look so attractive down the road. “As cyberattacks evolve, so will insurance,” says Jessica Averitt, a partner in the Houston office of law firm Baker McKenzie (www. bakermckenzie.com). “Companies need to review their policies to ensure adequate coverage in the post-COVID-19 world. For example, a few years ago provisions related to ransomware were rare. But after some recent high-profile attacks, such coverage is more common.”

Cyber policies can carry benefits that go beyond coverage categories. “The insurance agency will get you in touch with expert incident response brokers who will get you back up and running as quickly and cheaply as possible after an attack,” says Roger Grimes, a consultant at security firm Knowbe4 (www. knowbe4.com). “The insurance agency works with them because they are experts and they know how to do this better than anyone — and the insurance company saves money by using the best.”

The good news is that more carriers are entering the field of cyber insurance, increasing the competition for customers and helping improve terms and premiums. With a decade or more of loss history to analyze, carriers are finetuning their premiums to make policies more attractive. “I have not seen any policies in the past year or so that I thought were overpriced,” says Reynolds.

An important caveat: The terms of a cyber policy will be invalid if the covered business cannot illustrate compliance with a good security plan. Insurance companies are tightening the screws in this area. “We are seeing more carriers who will not even issue policies unless a business has security controls validated by a third party,” says Eric Jackson, Consultant in the Cybersecurity team at Withum (www.withum.com). “And when an incident occurs, carriers will often send inspectors to investigate the insured’s security posture before paying a claim.”

“This has created some serious security breaches.” Not only do users log onto malware-infested sites they would not access at work, but family members may accidentally open email attachments that install damaging programs.

ELECTRONIC PAYMENTS Wire transfers and ACH (Automated Clearing House) transactions are juicy targets for cyber thieves as the business world moves away from paper checks. “The right procedures can help spot electronic payment fraud before the money goes out the door,” says Schaeffer.

“That’s much better than trying to recover what’s been lost.”

The key word is “procedures.” Security experts say most business fraud stems from social engineering — a thief ’s skillful engagement with a company employee.

“Social engineering is responsible for 70 percent to 90 percent of all successful digital breaches,” says Roger Grimes, a consultant at security firm Knowbe4 (www.knowbe4.com).

“Yet the average company spends less than 5 percent of its cybersecurity budget to fight it.”

Training the staff in preventive procedures can stem such fraud in the bud. To prevent BEC fraud such as the one in our opening story, for example, businesses can require that wire transfers be validated by a means other than email. “Validation should be done by either picking up the phone and calling the executive using a known number, or if feasible, by walking over to that individual’s office,” says Schaeffer.

The pandemic has made this kind of verification more difficult. “Calling and verifying sounds easy in the abstract, but it can be exponentially more difficult when people work from home,” says Schaeffer.

“Sometimes the right person is not readily available because of their schedule.”

Adding to the risk is the fact that home workers often have less than ideal technology.

“Accounts payable people have become accustomed to using two screens,” says Schaeffer. “When they get sent home they may only have a laptop with a single small screen.”

The result of this technology mismatch can

be costly errors. “Just trying to enter data by going back and forth between applications takes longer and can create confusion.”

The above conditions can lead to security breaches when targeted employees are pressured into quick action. “Thieves will often request transactions when they know people are more likely to be overworked or harried,” says Schaeffer.

“Employees need to be warned to be alert for such requests that come in late on a Friday afternoon, at the end of the month, or anytime when thieves think they can trick somebody into failing to properly verify a transaction.”

PROTECT ACCOUNTS Good procedures can also guard against a variation of social engineering in which a caller, pretending to be a customer, requests bank routing numbers to pay an invoice. “People are often only too happy to give out such information because they want to receive money,” says Schaeffer. “However, rather than using the provided information to wire funds into the account the thief wires funds out.”

WHAT IS SOCIAL ENGINEERING? Social engineering is the psychological manipulation of people into performing actions of divulging confidential information.

This differs from social engineering with the social sciences, which does not concern the divulging of confidential information. The two most common types of social engineering when it comes to information security are baiting and phishing attacks.

Businesses can prevent such wire fraud by requiring account information be communicated only by designated individuals who directly dial the paying company using known telephone numbers. “Another solution is to establish one bank account dedicated to wire transfers, and use it only for inbound transactions,” says Schaeffer. “At the end of the day, money from that account can be swept into the business’s regular account which the bank has flagged to reject any wire transfers.”

In a reversal of the above fraud, a thief pretending to be a vendor will send an email providing routing numbers for a new bank account where all future payments are to be made.

The account, of course, belongs to the thief. “This type of fraud is exploding and I cannot caution you enough to be careful,” says Schaeffer. “You need to get to the right person to verify that the request is legitimate.” Again, verification should be done over a voice line using a known telephone number.

Schaeffer cautions that calling to verify changes in bank accounts or email addresses will only work if a company’s records are accurate. “It’s more important than ever to enter valid contact information in the master vendor file when it’s first set up, and then update it regularly.”

Wire transfers are not the only electronic payment method at risk. Thieves can also use stolen ACH numbers to steal company funds. Banks offer a number of services to stem losses. An ACH block will prohibit all ACH transactions for a specified account. An ACH debit block prohibits only transactions initiated by payees. An ACH filter allows ACH debits only to those on a designated list of names. An ACH alert triggers a notification when an ACH debit arrives, enabling a staff member to accept or reject.

“I suggest putting ACH debit blocks on all accounts where debit activity is not needed,” says Schaeffer. “Limit ACH debit activity to one or two accounts and check those accounts each day. Businesses have 48 hours’ time to notify the bank of any unauthorized transaction.” (Consumers enjoy a 60-day notification window).

DAMAGING MALWARE While currently some of the fastest-growing security breaches stem from social engineering, experts also suggest businesses take measures to protect themselves from one of the more “traditional” cyber fraud methods. The following methods can help reduce the chances of being hit with ransomware, a form of malware that requires targeted businesses to make costly payouts to either regain access to encrypted data or prevent the release of business information to competitors:

Beware of malware-ridden emails.

Phishing emails trick recipients into clicking a link to a toxic website or opening a compromised attachment. The result is the installation of keylogger software that collects keystrokes for critical bank account information.

Solution: Train employees to handle all emails with suspicion.

Update hardware.

Old computers and routers offer access points for hackers.

“Anything older than say 15 years was designed without security in mind,” says Jackson.

Solution: Replace old equipment with new models.

Patch software.

Outdated versions of operating systems or office programs are riddled with security bugs. “Unpatched software is involved in 20 percent to 40 percent of all digital breaches,” says Grimes.

Solution: Update operating programs with the latest versions.

INSURANCE POLICIES No business can eliminate the risk of cyber fraud. The right insurance though, can lessen the blow when a breach occurs.

“Insurance can protect businesses from so-called ‘first-party risk’ of their own losses,” says Reynolds. “Policies can also protect against losses to third parties such as customers and vendors, obviating lawsuits against the insured company.”

Even the best insurance policy is no substitute for operating procedures that help stop cyber theft in its tracks.

Employees from the CEO on down need to be trained on the most effective responses to thieves who are skilled at social engineering. “The one piece of advice I have is to be suspicious,” says Schaeffer. “Make sure everyone knows that if something looks a little odd, or if someone asks for something out of the ordinary, speak up. It’s better to go overboard on security than to go the other way.”

UK Manufacturing Leads the Pack

India’s PMI sees a steep drop as COVID-19 strikes the country hard

For the most part, manufacturing showed strength in May as the Eurozone and four additional countries were comfortably above the 60 percent PMI level. UK manufacturers set the pace as the country surged with a 4.7 percent PMI increase to reach a new high of 65.6 percent. On the other hand, India struggled with a COVID-19 resurgence and reversed the UK number and fell by 4.7 percent to a 50.8 percent PMI reading.

UNITED KINGDOM: The IHS Markit/CIPS UK Manufacturing

May PMI was reported at 65.6 percent to set the highest mark for countries/regions tracked by Brushware. Pandemic restrictions eased for the UK and pent-up demand also contributed to the new high for UK manufacturers. Raw materials shortages and disruptions to the supply chain led to a steep increase in purchasing costs which in turn pushed up selling prices. Business sentiment was at a record level.

GERMANY: The IHS Markit Germany Manufacturing PMI slipped to 64.4 percent in May – down for a second straight month from a high of 66.6 in March. The figure indicated

strong growth in factory activity, but supply-chain issues factored into the slight pull back from prior months. Delays in the receipt of inputs hit a new high and that pushed the rate of cost inflation up beyond previous highs for the series. Business optimism remains strong and job creation has increased to tackle anticipated growth.

EUROZONE: The IHS Markit Eurozone Manufacturing PMI moved up for a fourth straight month to hit a new high of 63.1 percent in May. Input costs increased substantially and the rate of inflation reached an unprecedented level. Eurozone employment for manufacturers went up for a fourth straight month and business optimism remained high.

ITALY: IHS Markit reported a new series high for Italian

manufacturers with a May PMI reading of 62.3 percent.

Output growth, new orders and employment all showed strength as second-quarter demand surged. Supply chain issues were still a problem and inflationary pressure continued to increase. Confidence in the business outlook remained high.

economic DASHBOARD UNITED STATES: The Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®)

reported a May PMI of 61.2 percent for U.S. manufacturers, which represented a half percentage point increase from the April reading. The report says U.S. companies and suppliers continue to struggle to meet increasing levels of demand with record-long lead times, wide-scale shortages of critical basic materials, rising commodities prices and challenges in transporting products continuing to affect all manufacturing segments. Worker absenteeism, short-term shutdowns due to part shortages and difficulties in filling open positions continue to limit manufacturing-growth potential. Optimism was strong though as the report indicated there were 36 positive comments for every cautious comment, compared to an 11-to1 ratio in April. “The manufacturing recovery has transitioned from first addressing demand headwinds, to now overcoming labor obstacles across the entire value chain,” says Timothy R. Fiore, ISM® Manufacturing Business Survey Committee Chair.

CHINA: The Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI registered a five-month high of 52.0 percent for May. The figure indicates a steady recovery for Chinese manufacturers as new orders rose the most since December 2020, while export orders growth also reached a six-month high. Job creation was stagnant even while backlogs of work rose. “Rapidly rising commodity prices began to disrupt the economy as some enterprises began to hoard goods, while some others suffered raw material shortages,” says Wang Zhe, senior economist at Caixin Insight Group.

INDIA: IHS Markit reported a manufacturing PMI of 50.8

percent for Indian manufacturers. That represents a 10-month low and a steep drop from the 55.5 percent reading in April.

The dropoff is primarily related to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases for the country. Firms saw a slowdown in the growth of input purchasing and employment decreased as a result. Business optimism from Indian manufacturers hit a 10-month low.
