During this pandemic, many people have felt isolated from their friends, loved ones, and seemingly the whole outside world. As things begin to progress in the positive direction, I hope we have learned much from the experience, and that you have a never-ending bucket list to get back to! For me, the past 15 months have been a time for reflection and growth. I learned that there are always going to be problems; you just have to pause and take time to find the solution. There is always a solution. I realized how important it is to surround yourself with people with purpose and good intentions. I’m grateful to have found that in our team here at the Brunswick

Come In and Tickle the Ivories at BSRI Thrift Stores By Mike McGurn Thrift Stores Operations Manager

A

s you think back to yesteryear, do you have fond memories of growing up with a piano or organ in your house? And even fonder memories of family and friends gathering around playing and singing on special occasions? I know I do! In our house, it was an organ, and my uncles and cousins could play beautifully and I always enjoyed listening to them play. The tradition of having a piano or organ in the house may have reached its heyday in the last half of the 20th century, but the memories live on and so do some of the pianos and organs, especially right now at BSRI Thrift Stores. The Shallotte store has an upright piano (shown at right) from the 1930s. It needs some tuning and a couple keys repaired, but it’s playable. We've had several customers come in and play it, much to the enjoyment of everyone in the store. We also have a Lowrey NT4001 organ from the 1970s (pictured at right) that's in great shape and sounds great too. A very generous donor actually paid to have it delivered to us! The Calabash store has a smaller Lowrey LC/1 organ from the 1990s, also in very good condition (pictured in ad at left). So if you like to tickle the ivories, feel free to stop by our stores, and check out and play these wonderful instruments that brought family and friends together for great entertainment right in our own homes. We hope to see and hear you playing in our stores soon!

Meals on Wheels Volunteers Michael and Margie Rhoden By Joan Leotta

On the Road with Meals

aldorf, Maryland sent Brunswick County two of its finest in June 2019 when Michael and Margie Rhoden moved to Brunswick Forest. Both offered a lifetime of service, Michael as an Army officer (retired colonel) and volunteer at the National World War II Memorial, and Margie as a librarian in Charles County, Maryland and then a volunteer with that library system. This pair decided from early on that they wanted to do volunteer work in their new community.

Michael Rhoden says, “A friend of ours who retired to southern Virginia told us how much he enjoyed delivering meals to homebound seniors.” They discovered Meals on Wheels, through the Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI), performs that service here in Brunswick County. They signed up and began working with the Brunswick Center at Leland in November 2020, just before Thanksgiving.

W

“We go out every Wednesday to six clients. It only takes about an

hour and a half. One of the stops is a couple, so we pick up seven meals from the Leland center at 9:30, and an hour and a half and thirty-five miles later, even counting chatting with our clients, we are done.” Margie Rhoden adds, “We really enjoy seeing and talking with our clients. We think of them as special people in our lives.” The Rhodens regularly inquire how their clients are doing and briefly visit with them – masked, of course. In addition to the meals, the Rhodens pick up flyers on things like health (e.g., where to get COVID-19 shots)

and other information the county publishes for seniors about available goods, services, and more.

Making New Friends The Rhodens note that one client comes out onto her deck to talk to them about her garden and another likes to chat about her son. “We ask them about the weather, their health, and follow up if we know they had a procedure done, to see how they are feeling,” Michael Rhoden says. If the Rhodens see anything amiss on a visit, they have name of a social worker to contact or they can report their observation to their

supervisor, Caroline McLeod at the Leland center, for follow-up. Both Rhodens emphasize that they very much enjoy visiting with their clients and seeing new parts of Brunswick County in the process. “Anyone can volunteer with Meals on Wheels,” they both note. “It’s only a one time per week commitment, and usually a short time at that.” If you are inspired by their story, you can learn more by going to the BSRI website, www.bsrinc.org. Learn more about volunteering with BSRI at bsrinc.org/volunteer.

Delivering Meals on Wheels is an easy and fun volunteer job, say Margie and Michael Rhoden. Once a week, the couple delivers meals to homebound seniors in the Leland area.

The Crucial Part of Your Body: Your Brain By Mallory Balice Wellness Program Manager The brain is an amazing and crucial part of our body which plays a role in almost all of our bodily processes. It’s important to exercise our brain just as we do our bodies. Researchers believe that many of the changes that come with aging, such as memory loss, are lifestylerelated. Keeping your brain in shape can help enhance your memory skills and reduce the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Incorporating a brain-healthy lifestyle with mind exercises can sharpen your brain! Follow these tips to exercise your brain:

Walk: The brain is like a muscle, you must constantly “work it out,” or its function will decline. Walking is beneficial to get your body moving and oxygen flowing to the brain. Walking at least 30 minutes a day has been found to deliver an oxygen boost to the brain.

Listen: To train your memory, listen more with your ears and mind. Trying to recall information later will help with your memory. Pay attention to all the details that you see and hear when around other individuals.

Incorporate a healthy diet: Eating a proper and healthy diet is crucial for keeping

your brain in optimum condition. Make sure your diet contains sufficient levels of vitamins and nutrients. Fish is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids which can help improve the structure and function of brain cells.

Learn new skills: Enhancing your skills by taking on new hobbies will surely help keep your brain sharp. For example, learning to speak another language or how to play a musical instrument. Keep it simple and easy and you will train your brain to remember things. No matter what stage of life you are in, it is important to keep learning and challenging yourself. There is always room to become the best version of yourself!

Food of the Month: Cauliflower Cauliflower is so versatile that it can be used almost in any dish. This member of the cruciferous family is packed with several nutrients such as vitamin K, vitamin C, folate, and fiber. It is a powerhouse food that may help with weight loss, digestion, and memory. Next time you decide to make a pizza, use cauliflower crust for a good source of vitamins. Reading Takes Us from the Real to the Potential By Donna Ruth Morgan

fighters for World War II history buffs.

istory buffs and inquisitive people may enjoy the books in our June reviews. Reading helps us delve a little deeper into history, which reveals much about our own time. And some of these selections consider a thoughtful future of our own devising. Read on!

Could you change your mind about a deeply-held belief? In Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know (2021) organizational psychologist Adam Grant shows how opinions can divide us, while relearning to communicate could unite us, one person at a time. Well-written, engaging material requires some mental adjustment to process— “arguing like you’re right but listening like you’re wrong.” Nutshell review: Thirty takeaways at book’s end are invaluable for readers curious about personal blind spots.

H

The Three Mothers: How the Mothers of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin Shaped a Nation (2021) highlights a trio of Black women’s survival of racism, sexism, and violence in the last century. Readers seeking factual biographies about mothers raising world-changing sons may find Anna Malaika Tubbs’ scholarship eclipsed by her injection of personal beliefs into the narratives. Nutshell review: An excellent, extensive bibliography offers unvarnished facts to celebrate these lives. The Paris Library (2021) shifts from Nazi-occupied Paris in 1939 to Montana in the 1980s. The connection between a mysterious French transplant and a young woman trapped in wartime terror reveals heartbreak overcome by hope. Janet Skeslien Charles’ winsome cast of real-life men and women and imagined characters unite through love of books and freedom. Nutshell review: A treasure for library and book lovers and an extensively researched account of French freedom

The Book of Two Ways is a 2020 “what-if” novel exploring a woman’s past, present, and a duo of possible futures. Dry Egyptology and confusing dips into quantum physics weigh down Jodi Picoult’s storyline about understanding death and survival. Readers might skim over some historical context (especially overly detailed hieroglyphics’ descriptions) in search of the plot, but will relate to the struggles in choosing a fulfilling path. Nutshell review: Dry subject matter and a hurried, frustrating conclusion yield thumbs-down for this book. Find these books at the library! Brunswick County Library branches have reopened with limited hours and services, and curbside pickup is available. Are You at Higher Risk for Having a Stroke? (StatePoint) Latia Howard was lead scorer of the University of Pittsburgh women’s basketball team. She was at the top of her game, being recruited by the WNBA. But that all changed after she suffered a stroke at just 21 years old. Early one morning, Howard began experiencing weakness in her arm and leg. While she decided to skip practice that day, she didn’t think too much of it. When her roommate told her trainer why Howard wasn’t at practice and what she was experiencing, he called her and noticed she didn’t sound right on the phone. He went straight to her apartment, immediately called 911, and she was rushed to the emergency room.

African Americans at Risk Star basketball player La a Howard suffered a life‐changing stroke at 21. Look for BE FAST signs to iden fy strokes early.

According to the American Stroke Association, African Americans have a higher prevalence of stroke and the highest death rate from stroke than any other racial group. Among stroke survivors, African Americans are more likely to be disabled and have difficulties doing daily activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that almost half of African Americans have at least one risk factor for stroke, including manageable conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as genetic conditions like sickle cell disease. That is why it’s important for everyone to be aware of their risk factors and learn the signs to watch. Howard’s stroke changed her life. Not only was the star athlete unable to play basketball afterward, she had to relearn how to walk and talk and went through extensive physical therapy, and she became depressed. But she shifted her dream of playing in the WNBA to coaching young, up-and-coming basketball players. “I am grateful I am here and can share my story,” says Howard, who, now 43, is an educator and basketball coach. “I encourage my team to always give 100% because at one time in my life, I couldn’t give anything.” Howard encourages everyone to know their body, so they can recognize when something feels different or wrong. “When it comes to stroke, every moment counts,” she says.

Backyard Bees Help Put Food on the Table By Pat Naughton

W

hat do you call a 6-week-old worker honey bee? ...A senior buzz.

Bees are extremely active foraging for food, storing nectar, feeding larvae, and producing honey, and only live for 6 weeks. There is no time for retirement. There are 560 species of bees in North Carolina. Bees are essential. Animal pollinators are responsible for pollinating 87 percent of flower and 75 percent of crop plants. Bees are commonly associated with having a hive but 60 percent of bees are solitary. They are their own queen and worker. Bees that live in a hive are called social: A queen, drones, and worker bees work together to help the colony survive. They make up 16 percent. Parasite bees make up 24 percent. They don’t collect pollen but sneak into other bees’ nest to lay their eggs.

Yikes! Bees Finding a bee nest in the backyard can be unsettling. Bees that make a nest in the ground are called miner bees. They are generally solitary and only the female will sting if threatened. The nest will be evident by small holes in the ground on bare soil. If possible, leave nests undisturbed. Bee nests can be a nuisance. To discourage ground nesting bees, place a landscape fabric over the area or cover it with mulch. Or just let them continue their solitary lives. Carpenter bees bore holes in wood to make a nest. Wood decks and overhangs are prime targets for nests. Unless there are a large number of bees, there is no challenge to the structural integrity of the wood. They do eliminate their waste before entering the tunnel. This results in a yellowish-brown stain visible beneath the hole. Wood-peckers may cause further damage in search of bee larvae in the tunnel. Carpenter bees are not threatening. Only the female stings and will only do so when highly agitated. The males are highly territorial and will harass other bees and people that venture near the nest. To reduce nesting activity, treat the entrance holes with an insecticidal spray or dust. Products containing carbaryl (Sevin), malathion or resmethrin are suitable. Since abandoned tunnels may

Top, from le : Carpenter bee and bumblebee. Bo om: Yellow jacket (a wasp) and honeybee.

serve as overwintering sites, or be reused next spring, it is important that they be plugged with wooden dowels or wood putty.

Air Bee and Bee Bee also nest in stems and holes in wood. These types of bees are known as renters. You can promote this type of bee by putting up a bee hotel. Hotels are usually the size of a bird house and have small tubes for bees to build nests. The tubes should be cleaned out every few years. Yellow jackets nest in the ground, but they are not bees. They can be aggressive when the nest is disturbed. Yellow jackets are beneficial because they prey on many insects that we consider to be pests. Nest should be left undisturbed if possible. You may want to mark the area to avoid going near the nest. To control the nest, spray the opening with wasp or hornet spray around dusk when most of the insects are in the nest. Do not pour gasoline down the hole of a nest. This is extremely dangerous, as it is a flammable hazard and does immense damage to the environment. A bee sting may hurt but a world without them would be more painful. Bees are responsible for pollinating one in three bites of food we eat. Imagine that diner plate with one third less food. Ouch, that hurts. To learn more about backyard bees visit Dr. Elsa Youngsteadt’s YouTube presentation “Get to Know the Wild Bees in Your Yard” (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=-yGbpqX_ZQM). Dr. Youngstead is an assistant professor in the Department of Applied Ecology at N.C. State University.

SHIIP Overcomes Counseling Obstacles By M. René Tarquinio Lead Case Manager/SHIIP Coordinator

T

he coronavirus pandemic created many obstacles never before seen in the Seniors Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), and 2020 will be a year we will never forget. Initially we thought that we could continue to counsel Medicare beneficiaries in person as we had done before. We had our sneeze guards in place, masks, disinfectants, etc. Then when the COVID numbers began to escalate, we knew that we needed to find a different way to reach Medicare beneficiaries living in Brunswick County.

As SHIIP Coordinator, I knew we needed to find a different way of doing business. Together with the SHIIP volunteers, we came up with a plan. We knew we needed to embrace technology, so together we overcame our initial reservations and called people by phone and by Zoom, and held outdoor presentations and classes. We realized that with perseverance and determination we could continue to assist Medicare beneficiaries. We learned that technology was an amazing resource and tool! Overall, we counseled 990 Medicare beneficiaries at a cost savings of $633,519. What an achievement during a pandemic!

Thank you, SHIIP Volunteers

Open Enrollment a Challenge The SHIIP program provides counseling with Medicare throughout the year, but Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 is our busiest time of the year. This is the Open Enrollment period when people can change their prescription drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan. We were discouraged because we did not know how we were going to provide assistance to all of those in need.

Many thanks to our amazing volunteers: Celeste Korpon, Alan Morrissey, Linda Rahilly, Eileen Scanlon, Mary Fitzgerald, Judy LaRocca, Everett Randall, Kate Slavin, Bob Burgess, Mike Carper, and Donna Murphy. Also, thanks to all the BSRI staff who went above and beyond to help during this trying time. Hopefully, 2021 will prove to be a less challenging year. But we now know that together we can overcome anything!

And what is so rare as a day in June? Then, if ever, come perfect days…. ~ James Russell Lowell

Community Garden! THE LORD’S MIRACLE ACRE The Lord’s Miracle Acre addresses the problem of food insecurity and helps to alleviate the major health problems that present themselves as a result of poverty, which in our community includes diabetes. This is a collaborative effort between local farmers, helping agencies, schools, and churches, with the goal of increasing the

consumption of fruits and vegetables in people’s diets and in turn increasing their activity level and reducing chronic disease. The crops that we harvest will go to BSRI and a local food bank to help with this. If you would like to volunteer to work in our garden, please contact Teresa Nelson, Center Director in Shallotte.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) launched on June 15, 2006. The $1,500 grant will allow the agency to purchase disposable undergarments and incontinence supplies for the seniors in Brunswick County.

In addition, elder abuse and neglect is increasingly recognized as a public health and human rights issue. WEAAD serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
