How quickly the months pass and I find myself with the privilege of addressing our senior community with the activities, progress, and challenges associated with our daily goal of improving the lives of our seniors. Hard to believe that we have already reached the calendar mid-point for 2017 and the end of the fiscal year 2016-2017. June represents the work associated with entering final costs, developing new budgets, and making projections concerning growth of the senior population and its needs. Brunswick County is adding about 2,000 residents annually who are 60 years of age or older, with an estimated 48,565 at last count. Brunswick County is now the fifth oldest county in terms of median age and is expected to become first in the next few years. Despite the challenges of keep up with those types of population increases, I am pleased to report that BSRI will once again close this fiscal year on time and on budget. The organization as a whole is well positioned to meet its financial obligations with no reoccurring debt. The good news for fiscal year 2017-18
Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO
is that BSRI was able to successfully secure a 26 percent funding increase to cover the costs of opening two new senior centers this year. On a separate note, I would like to once again express my gratitude to Jim Russell and his family for all that they have done for BSRI. After Jim’s passing last month, the Russell family requested that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to BSRI to support its Meals on Wheels program. I am pleased to say that BSRI has received more than $1,500 in donations. God bless you, Jim! FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4

The bid process for selecting a builder for the new Calabash Area Senior Center closed last month and Gorka Construction Inc., a company headquartered in Whiteville, was the winning bidder. Several builders met prequalification criteria and competitive bids ensured the project was able proceed on time and within the prescribed budget. The new Calabash Senior Center is approximately 12,000 square feet and is situated on nearly five acres of land in downtown Calabash. Its location will provide easy access to all local amenities and businesses. Construction is expected to begin at the beginning of summer. A modular structure in front of the new center will house the Briar Patch Florist and Gifts during construction.

June marks the beginning of summer. Buzz correspondent Linda Walters snapped this month’s cover photo, a moment of summer at the beach that also reminds us to celebrate Flag Day on June 14. The Buzz encourages everyone to kick off their shoes this month and cool off at the beach.
BSRI is seeking community support from area residents, businesses, and nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Calabash area center. A goal of $100,000 has been set to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910)754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. While BSRI is the recipient of many blessings, it also faces many challenges. The summer months bring difficulty in adequate volunteer staffing for home delivered meals. Our plea is that if you have time in your schedule to be able to assist with delivering a few meals, please call us at (910) 754-2300. BSRI offers a mileage stipend to assist with the cost of fuel. Stay cool out there!

Sheila Grooms won $40 worth of scratch-off tickets and two tickets to the Biltmore in the Brunswick Center at Southport’s monthly drawing. The University of North Carolina Wilmington School of Social Work faculty recently recognized René Tarquinio, BSRI Case Manager and SHIIP Coordinator, with the BSW Field Worker Instructor Appreciation Award. Every year Tarquinio mentors an intern from the UNCW Social Work program. Caitlin Josey was the bachelor’s level intern from August 2016 to April 2017, and she nominated Tarquinio for the award. Above are Tarquinio, Josey, and Rita Sanders, an instructor at the Southport Center.
The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation designating this month for Elder Abuse Prevention Awareness. Elder abuse, the mistreatment of elderly and disabled adults, is an under-recognized and under-reported problem, the board said. Mistreatment can take the form of physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, exploitation, and financial exploitation. Elder abuse has an estimated 5 million victims each year, and as few as
one in 24 cases is reported. These numbers are expected to grow as the elderly population increases. The problem is preventable. From May 14 through June 18, 2017, the board encourages Brunswick County residents to become more aware and join in the prevention of elder abuse.

Spotlight on Service
John Ingraham, Chairman of Story and photographs by Linda Walters
provided a solid foundation of values and principles.
“Wisdom is knowing the right path to take...Integrity is taking it.” –M. H. McKee
Upon graduation from college, Ingraham moved to Texas for a career in sales, marketing, and finance for a retail photography company. In 1978, John relocated to Charlotte, working for two other photography companies while advancing in his senior management role. In 2004, John moved to Brunswick County.
J
ohn Ingraham has served as chairman of the board for Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) since 2011. BSRI has appreciated his service not only his wisdom and integrity, but also his dedication to giving back to others. Ingraham is stepping down from the helm now, but he’s not stepping too far—he will continue as BSRI board member.
Ingraham was born in Boston, Mass., the third child of six in a loving Irish Catholic family. His mother, Ann, was a housewife and his father, Al, an office manager. “Our household was always involved with helping others,” Ingraham says. Both parents
John Ingraham is active in the community as well as principal at John Ingraham LLC, First Financial Education Centers. From left are Beth Newell, John Ingraham, and Ashley Bennett.
Ingraham is principal of John Ingraham, LLC, DBA First Financial Education Centers in Shallotte, an A+ rated, BBB-accredited business and a recipient of numerous industry awards, most recently the LIMRA International Award in recognition of achievement in productivity and professionalism. A man of strong business skills and financial knowledge, he has helped companies and individuals to grow and prosper.
“I like building. I see a need, and using my skills from 40-plus years in business, provide others with the education and format they need to prosper,” Ingraham says. He has successfully assisted in building five companies and he uses those same skills to help individuals with estate and retirement plans.
Upon moving to Ocean Isle Beach, John saw a need to help seniors. His parents, then elderly, lived part time with John, and then full time. "I wanted to start a business to help seniors to have healthy, active, and social lives,” Ingraham says. At St. Brendan's Catholic Church in Shallotte, a member of the social ministries told him about BSRI and suggested that he assist BSRI instead of starting a business. “I contacted Jim Russell with BSRI and volunteered my service.
Spotlight on Service
the Board: A Path of Service I was appointed to the board of directors [in 2006] and as such, with BSRI management, we reshaped our board to match our vision for seniors. We found the right people to carry out our mission,” Ingraham says. He’s proud that keeping to BSRI’s mission statement has resulted in three BSRI centers being certified Senior Centers of Excellence by the NC Department of Health and Human Services. “John has been a great mediator and stabilizing force, seeing BSRI through both difficult and successful times. John has given countless hours in the service of seniors and his community,” says Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO. “I cannot express enough gratitude for the hard work, guidance, and leadership that John has provided during his tenure. I am pleased that John will remain with the board and focus on business development opportunities to continue the work of bringing revenue to help senior programs and services,” Fish says.
John is the proud parent of two children: Kelly, an account executive with MetLife, and Michael, a physician in Norfolk, Va. He is a senior himself now, but he doesn’t let that slow him down. "Life doesn't end because we age. Seniors need to strive to be healthy, active, and to live a social life. We can be socially active by giving back, volunteering our time, education, and skills to help others.
John Ingraham steps down as BSRI board chairman this month, but BSRI is grateful that he will remain a board member. “John has given countless hours in the service of seniors and his community,” says Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO.
We can give to each other, our cities, and our county. “Volunteering is energy, it is joy. It is in the process of giving that we also receive the benefit of a happy, fulfilled life,” Ingraham says. Ingraham is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, Top of the Table, Million Dollar Roundtable, BSRI board of director, and the
parish council of St. Brendan’s Catholic Church. He volunteers on the vision team at St. Brendan’s, working to create a medical center and a dedicated food pantry. "Retirement is not a personal goal for me right now. I enjoy helping people and I have fun. In my down time, I love to be outdoors. I bike, boat, kayak and just enjoy life. I am a social person, I love people," Ingraham says.

I
n a small business strip off Long Beach Road in Oak Island, The Hive retail store sits next to 16 buzzing honeybee hives, a raisedbed vegetable garden, and a honey jarring room. “An educational, community gathering place with honey on tap—this is my vision for The Hive,” owner Craig Connolly says. Connolly is a third-generation beekeeper who grew up on a farm in the foothills of North Carolina. After working the farm for many years, Craig’s wife, a hospice nurse, was offered a relocation. They packed up the family, and of course many bee hives, and moved to South Brunswick County.
After a time of selling honey at roadside stands, Connolly needed more bee hives, more help, and a retail storefront. Almost three years later, The Hive is a fully functional retail store. Craig Connolly, owner of The Hive Natural Market and Bee Supplies in Oak Island, fills a mason jar with honey in the shop’s honey jarring room. Left: The Hive sells local handmade products including honeybee products, fresh eggs, and handmade teddy bears.
“I want to offer the best products to my customers,” Connolly says. “Either I make the product or they are made by my friends or fellow beekeepers.” Handmade teddy bears line the shelves along with hand-painted signs, local and regional honey, molasses, bee salve, natural tinctures and royal jelly, lip balm, muscle balm, and North Carolina mountain stone ground grits. Connolly encourages shoppers to
stop in, sit a spell, chat and even play with the teddy bears.
“Honey can sustain life in place of food and water. It is a food source that never goes bad,” Connolly says. “It has even been found in Egyptian tombs.” There are many health benefits
Bee Cool
of honey: It builds a stronger immune system, it may reduce cholesterol, and it may control acid reflux. Everyone should check with their family physician before selfprescribing honey for any medical treatments, Connolly says.
Honeybees are threatened and their population is in decline. “In the last 14-15 years, the United States has lost 30-35 percent of honeybees, mainly due to the use of pesticides. Seventy-five percent of what we eat has been visited by a pollinator with honeybees being the No. 1 pollinator,” Connolly says. Connolly teaches Beekeeping, Production and Management at Brunswick Community College through their Continuing Education program. The class outlines bee management, production, and pest control.
The Hive offers honey from Connolly’s hives and from other local beekeepers.
The public can help by planting gardens to attract honeybees. An excellent publication, 100 Plants to Feed the Bees, can be found at The Hive.
Later this summer when other varieties of honey are stocked at the store, honey tastings will be offered. If you don’t want to wait until then, call and ask for a tour to see how bee hive boxes are made and honey is jarred in old-fashioned moonshine-type glass jars, or for some friendly conversation about honeybees. If you stop by the store on Long Beach Road and find Connolly in the fields tending to the bee hives, just pick out your purchases, fill out a paper receipt and leave your money on the counter. It’s an honor system that doesn’t get any sweeter.
Honeybees pollinate plants we eat every day, but they are threatened by diseases and pesticides. To help area honeybees, plant untreated flowers such as those listed in 100 Plants to Feed the Bees, a book sold at The Hive.
The Hive Natural Market and Bee Supplies is at 4146 Long Beach Road in Oak Island, (910) 880-2474. Call for store hours or find them on Facebook.

Higlighting One of Leland’s Own...
The Leland Senior Center is doing a series of videos that will be posted on YouTube and BSRI’s Facebook page, as well as short biographies that will be published in the Buzz Newsletters. This month’s story focuses on Mr. Freddie Lee Jones.
Freddie Lee Jones was born in 1943, in New Haven, Connecticut, but most of his family lives here in North Carolina which is why he moved to this area. Freddie was only 7 years old when he became sick with spinal meningitis. He was one of the first African Americans to be treated with penicillin. For the next 7 years Freddie had to undergo spinal taps and other painful procedures. He was told that he would never walk, but he has never let anything or anyone try to stop him from reaching his goals. In fact, such threats simply motivated him to try harder. Fully able to walk, Freddie now lives in Winnabow where he is an inspiration to others as he participates in activities at the Brunswick Senior Center in Leland. His favorite activity is drawing, but like the rest of us, he simply enjoys chatting with others over coffee and cookies.

Presentation by Family First Chiropractic, Friday, June 23rd, 11am. Learn how chiropractic can help with many structurally related disorders of the body. Nutrition Presentation, Thursday, June 8th, 11:45am, by our own Mallory Balice, BSRI Program Specialist. Learn how to eat well and choose the right foods to help you stay strong and healthy as you age. Coming in July—Sock Hop! Saturday, July 15th, 6pm10pm. Tickets $15. Gals, dig out your poodle skirt and bobby socks, and guys grab your white T-shirt, your best snazzy jeans! This event is always a sell-out, so get your tickets soon. (A bit of trivia: do you know how “sock hop” got its name? The dance was usually held for teens in a school gym on the varnished wooden floor. To avoid damage from hard-soled shoes, teens had to remove their shoes: hence, “sock.” As a result, this facilitated all manner of sliding, twisting, and jiving! As to the “hop,” that’s the name for the “event” which separates it from any other kind of dance [ballroom, etc.]). Ain’t that cool, Daddy-o? (Source: various websites.)
