Letter from the BSRI CEO The entrance of November marks for many the beginning of the holiday season. And it provides me the needed and often public reminders of the importance of this special time of year. I enjoy everything from the beautification of our local municipalities with their holiday lights to the reverence of religious displays on families’ homes and yards. My heart is turned to gratitude for phone calls made and preparations finalized, as we leave our normal routines, and visions of time spent with loved ones takes precedent over our normal course.

tremendous gift, one I did not anticipate. On the surface it may appear to be the simplest of things but for me it had great meaning and deep impact. We had the good fortune of having a representative from the Sheriff’s Office volunteer sing our National Anthem as part of the opening ceremonies. Unsolicited, and in seeming perfect unison, everyone stood up and accompanied our guest performer. Those who had American flags waved them, and those who were infirm looked on in steadfast gaze as each line was harmonized.

Despite the challenges that engage each of us, there is much to be grateful for and many ways to express that gratitude. I am thankful for the refining quality of gratitude and for the way that it seems to help us reach common ground. It is also the impetus for the generosity associated with providing comfort for those in need.

I could not help but have my heart turned to the generosity of these special generations who worked so hard, gave so much, and embodied the common threads of respect and patriotism. I have reflected on that moment several times now, and it serves as a special reminder of who we are, why we are here, and what we need keep in perspective. My hope is that we not mistake what we receive as natural right, but a gift, and we forget not the giver.

With this month’s theme revolving around the topic, I wish to publicly express my gratitude for you, my seniors.

The 5th Annual Seniors Helping Seniors and Their Caregivers event continued its upward trend in participation and popularity.

Last month, at our annual Seniors Helping Seniors event, I was given a

Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. announces all anticipated closings of operational programs and services through WECT Channel 6 in Wilmington. WECT broadcasts schools, businesses, and government office closings during special announcements when emergencies arise and notifies several local radio stations, such as FM radio station 102.7 GNI. Listings of closed businesses are also posted on the WECT website, and BSRI also updates its website at www.bsrinc.org.

Brunswick Senior Buzz

All BSRI staff, participants and volunteers should access TV and radio broadcast information regarding closings when inclement weather and other emergency situations arise which could affect operations and safe travel. BSRI usually follows the same closing schedule as Brunswick County officials and Brunswick Transit System. BSRI apologizes for any inconvenience that delayed and cancelled services cause our program participants. We make

The Senior Alliance and BSRI received a multitude of compliments for its program structure, presenters, operations and prizes. A special thanks to our presenters, performers and vendors. Probably the greatest compliment of all came from our vendors as it was noted that participants were genuinely engaged and wanted more information concerning the services offered in our community. I personally wish to thank our seniors for preregistering in record numbers, as we were able to accurately provide lunches, seating and parking. NEWS from the Organization It’s that time of year for open enrollment or making adjustments to Medicare Health Insurance Plans. The election period began on October 15, 2015 and runs through December 7th. This is a great time to review your insurance coverage and it’s the only time you can make changes. This service is free to individuals 55 and older and is available in Leland, Shallotte and Southport. To get the most out of your session, we respectfully request that you make a reservation so that we know how to prepare employee and volunteer schedules. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please call 910-754-2300 and ask for Karen. Brunswick County Commissioners approved the bid from Daniels & Daniels construction at the Oct. 19 county commissioners meeting. The bid falls within the $3 million budget allocated for the construction of a new senior center in Leland. The project continues to move forward and appears to be on schedule for a ground breaking in January 2016. BSRI is seeking community support from residents,

every effort to change voice messages when time allows, and BSRI tries to provide homedelivered meal participants with shelf stable and frozen meals before anticipated closings. Still, weather has a way of surprising us with debilitating conditions that can’t always be predicted. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding when unexpected events occur. And we will strive to prepare and deliver messages as quickly as possible when emergency closings are needed.

business and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies and furnishings that will be non-budgeted items for the new Leland Center. If you would like to make a contribution toward the new center, please call (910) 7542300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. HAPPY NEW YEAR! The end of the calendar year is approaching and BSRI will be celebrating the new year with its second annual New Year’s Eve Party on Thursday, Dec. 31. This year’s event will feature music by the Brunswick Big Band and dinner by ART Catering. Dinner begins at 7:30 p.m. and the evening will end at 11 p.m. with a toast to 2016. Tickets are $35 and are available by calling (910) 754-2300, and ask for Debra. All proceeds benefit the Meals on Wheels program for 2016. A special thanks to the volunteers, contributors and staff who make it possible to fulfill the important mission of this organization. It is simply impossible to list all those who have publicly and privately supported BSRI. These special people understand that providing services to our seniors is a collaborative and community effort. We are most grateful for the time, resources and work provided by all. Please be mindful of those around you this holiday season. I am burdened by the thought of those who will pass the coming days in loneliness. The magnitude of this problem cannot be overcome by one organization alone. Please reach out to those who suffer in isolation as life sometimes dictates the cruel reality that family and good friends may not be close by. May we all be found well.

Your Devoted Servant, Jim

Consumer Contributions Extend Services to More Seniors By Yvette Gosline They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Although Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) provides meals at no cost, the money to do this must come from somewhere. BSRI is lucky to have funding from federal, state, and local resources to provide services. For some services, we also request contributions from those recipients who are able to pay. That’s called consumer contributions. The purpose of the Consumer Contributions Policy is to extend the availability of services administered by the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services and the North Carolina Division of Social Services. We ask recipients of certain services if they are able and willing to contribute a portion of the cost. Money collected is retained by BSRI, and we use it to increase services for existing or new clients. BSRI asks our clients for contributions toward the services they receive. We realize that not everyone can afford to contribute and that an individual’s financial situation can change. No one is obliged to contribute; it is entirely voluntary. The more contributions we

get, the more people we can provide services for: services like meals, transportation, and other assistance. Consumer Contributions are collected for:     

Home Delivered Meals Congregate Meals In-home Aide Transportation Family Caregiver Support

The Recommended Contribution Schedule is used to determine what a reasonable and fair voluntary contribution amount would be based on an individual’s household income. If our clients are above the federal poverty line, we will give them a copy of the Recommended Contribution Schedule. But the decision to contribute and in what amount is up to each individual. Meals on Wheels: Our facilities provide meals to home-bound adults 60 years of age and older residing in Brunswick County. The hot midday meals are delivered by volunteer drivers.

M

any homebound seniors can’t prepare a hot meal for themselves. To make sure area seniors get a hot meal each day, Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. serves 200 meals a day at Senior Centers in Brunswick County, and

delivers up to 240 hot meals through its Meals on Wheels program. The national Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) is the oldest, largest organization representing community-based Senior Nutrition Program. BSRI is a member of the MOWAA, so we bring nutrition programs to Brunswick County. The Meals on Wheels program is meant to promote better health among older people and to help them maintain independence and stay in their own home.

Some older people have limited mobility and can’t travel. Home-

delivered meals are available for people 60 and older who can’t prepare meals, don’t have someone to do this for them, and can’t come to the senior center for congregate meals. Spouses may be eligible too. “We serve 73 homebound from the Shallotte Center,” said Shelley Cooper, Nutrition Coordinator at the Shallotte Senior Center. “In some cases we are the only person the client sees all day, so if we can take a few minutes to ask how they are, if they need anything, or just give them a hug, it means so much to them.”

The Meals on Wheels program depends on volunteer drivers to deliver hot meals to seniors in their homes. “We need drivers desperately in Leland and Shallotte,” Volunteer Coordinator Sarah Powell said. “Calabash could use backup drivers. It’s important to have backup drivers in case there’s a problem with the regular driver.”

Hot meals are prepared every weekday. Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers arrive at the senior center between 10 and 10:30 a.m. and pick up their route sheets. Drivers collect a hot pack and a cooler for each meal. Drivers load the meals into their vehicle and begin their route, plotted out on Mapquest so it’s easy to navigate and there’s no doubling back. There may be as few as five or as many as 14 stops on a Meals on Wheels route. Routes are set up to take less than an hour and 15 minutes. Volunteers may choose how often they’d like to deliver Meals on Wheels. “We like them to have a consistent schedule,” Powell said. “Once a week is OK, or two days a week, or every day— it all depends on their schedule. And we always need backup people who we can call if another driver can’t make it.” All Meals on Wheels drivers must pass a background check and use their own vehicle. Drivers can be reimbursed for mileage if they choose. To learn more about volunteering, call Sarah Powell at (910) 754-2300.

“Call BSRI at (910) 754-2300 if you are interested in getting Meals on Wheels,” Powell said. If you have a neighbor you’re concerned about, the senior center will ask its case management team to interview anyone interested in the program to see if they qualify.

BARK Brings Meals to Furry Friends Brunswick Area Responsible K-9 (BARK) Owners is a local organization whose mission is to educate and promote responsible pet ownership and to aid and assist pet owners in need. They’ve been operating in Brunswick County for more than 15 years. In May of 1998, pet owners of Brunswick County, N.C., united for the first time with a common goal. Within the first few years, BARK’s members formed a well-organized pet therapy program under the certification of Therapy Dogs Incorporated.

The pet therapy program provides education, affection and comfort to individuals in local nursing homes and public school systems. In 2006, BARK initiated a new program, Meals on Wheels 4 Pets. The Meals on Wheels 4 Pets program aids homedelivered meal recipients by providing pet food at no cost on a monthly basis. In February 2010, Bark Park at Shallotte Park was opened to the public and their pets. Bark Park was a joint effort between Brunswick County Parks and Recreation and Brunswick Area Responsible K-9 (BARK) Owners. BARK members hope to raise money to bring more Bark Parks to Brunswick County. If you’d like to know more about BARK and determine how you can donate, check out www.barknc.org.

A Message from Anne... November 17th marks the first year of our being in the new senior center location. We recognize that today's retirees span quite an age range and have different interests and preferences. In the past year, programs and activities have been added and expanded in an effort to meet these needs. Participation has significantly increased with new people registering daily. As we reflect on this year, Kathy and I thank all of you for your continued support and we wish you a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving.

New — Living with Less Workshop

Exercise Classes-Have Fun. Get Fit.

Friday, Nov 6th, 11:00am

Instructor Angela Ruel invites you to connect with friends and make new ones as you work your body, mind, and spirit in an enjoyable and supportive class. She says it’s all about being able to do the things you enjoy in life. Physical problems are no problem—do what you can. Get better as you go. It’s a very rewarding experience.

Older adults often stay in touch with the past through possessions—but less can actually be more! In this workshop, Dr. Sandy Gregory explores how downsizing can be liberating and offer greater safety in the home as well as reduced expenses. The challenges of downsizing are covered as well as tips and options for where to find help for the journey—and even enjoy the new adventure! Mark your calendar now for this enlightening workshop. ***** Dr. Sandy C. Gregory is the founding director of North Carolina Baptist Aging Ministry (NCBAM) established in 2009 with the mission to help aging adults maintain their independence. Under Dr. Gregory’s leadership, the unique ministry has birthed statewide programs and services targeting the key reasons aging adults lose their independence. Through its strong partnerships with Baptist churches, state government agencies, and the private sector, NCBAM impacts the lives of thousands of aging adults in North Carolina each year.

Senior Safety is #1 Priority

Member Dave Henn “attacks” instructor Dean (in blue) who demonstrates how to defend against it

Tai Chi instructor, Dean Sutzer, recently shared valuable information with his students about how seniors can protect themselves and their loved ones in a life-threatening situation. Dean stressed that “being safe” means being aware of your surroundings, thinking about vulnerabilities, and planning ahead. Students enjoyed learning and practicing a few simple, easy-to-do (and remember) handdefense techniques which will better empower and enable them to eventually get to a place of safety— which is the ultimate goal.

Craft Classes Explore your creativity! Add a personal touch to the holiday this year by making your own Christmas cards. We’ll show you how. Card-making classes are scheduled for: Tuesday and Thursday, Nov 3rd and 5th Beginners and seasoned crafters alike will enjoy making this gorgeous Deco Mesh Wreath for the holidays. Once you learn how, you’ll be looking for an “excuse” to make more! Wreath classes are scheduled for: Tuesday and Thursday Nov 10th, 12th, 17th and 19th Please sign up the Friday before the scheduled class.

Member Donna Henn keeps instructor Dean at bay with an effective defensive move

Honor Flight Documentary Film In honor of our veterans, we are proud to show the documentary film:

“Honor Flight—One Last Mission” on Tuesday, Nov 10th at 10:00am. The film is about a town that decided to send their WW II veterans to the memorial in Washington, DC. This event is presented by the Lower Cape Fear Hospice (LCFH) which is a part of a national program called “We Honor Veterans.” Community Outreach Coordinator, Haylie Long, will speak briefly before the showing and, afterwards, she will talk about their Veteran Program and suggest ways you can get involved. Visit the LCFH website at www.lchf.org.

Holiday Food Safety Tips The holidays often mean preparing large meals for family and friends. Wash hands, utensils, sink, and anything else that has come in contact with raw poultry. Keep in mind that a stuffed bird takes longer to cook. Properly defrost your turkey, or buy a fresh one. If you choose a frozen turkey, allocate 24 hours per 5 pounds to defrost in the refrigerator, and whatever you do, don’t defrost the bird on the kitchen counter. In light of drought conditions in certain areas of the country, defrosting the bird using frequently changed cold water seems wasteful. But it is safe (time-consuming), as long as you change the cold water bath every 30 minutes. Cook to proper temperature -- and use a thermometer. There is simply no other way to determine that food has been cooked enough to kill bacteria. "Turkeys, stuffing, side dishes, and all leftovers should be cooked to at least 165 degrees and kept above 140 degrees during serving to be sure that any potential bacteria is destroyed." "Remember the golden rule: Keep hot food hot and cold food cold."

Reheat leftovers to 165 degrees. Use a thermometer to make sure all the food is reheated enough to kill bacteria. Microwaves heat in an uneven manner, so let the covered food sit for a minute or two to let the heat destroy any bugs, then check the temperature all around the plate. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of preparation. Leaving food out too long is one of the biggest holiday food safety problems. "It is so easy to linger around the table, but when food sits outs for more than two hours in the danger zone -- above 40 degrees and below 140 degrees -it is prime for bacterial growth." Keep guests (and sticky fingers) out of the kitchen. Holidays occur during cold and flu season, which further compounds the fact that about half of all people have staph aureus bacteria on their fingertips. So it is important to prevent anyone from picking at the food while it is being prepared. Serve simple appetizers to give guest something to nibble on until the meal is ready.

BSRI "Stockings for Seniors" program celebrates the season BSRI IS GETTING READY for our annual Stockings for Seniors program. Now in its 13th year, Stockings for Seniors is expanding to cover more of Brunswick County than ever before. Plan now for what you would like to donate or how you would like to be involved. Seniors are chosen for this program from individuals getting home delivered meals and those who express interest at congregate meal sites. Case managers also get wishes from those that are receiving caregiver support funds. Wishes are anonymous, but age and gender is available when the donor chooses a stocking. This event is an annual treat for both the people who are involved with giving gifts to the seniors of Brunswick County and those that are the beneficiaries of these gifts. Want to join in? Contact your local senior center, or call our VP of Programs and Services Yvette Gosline, (910) 754-2300. Or visit us at the Leland Walmart on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 pm.
