Jan Morgan-Swegle moved here from Ohio 11 years ago a#er re ring from senior management roles in banking and insurance. Jan has been wri ng for over 40 years and has been published in numerous newspapers and magazines, focusing on stories related to family, women in business, and community events. She has been married to her husband, Tony, for 33 years and lives in Compass Pointe with their dog, Dixie. Read Jan’s story about Leland line dancing classes on page 12. Donna Ruth Morgan volunteers with Friends of the Library in Southport and Oak Island, Boiling Spring Lakes Library Commission, Brunswick County Library Board of Trustees, and the N.C. Friends of the Public Library. She inherited a love of reading and shares that enjoyment with her four children and three grandchildren. Veronica Lett-McGee Director, The Brunswick Center at Leland Veronica manages all center operations, programming, and staff at the Leland Center. Veronica grew up in Tuskegee, Alabama and studied at the University of North Carolina, with an undergrad degree in African American Studies and a graduate degree in SocioEconomic Justice. “My first job after college was as an assistant manager of a Massage Envy; my first social work role was as an inpatient palliative care social worker for Hospice of Greensboro,” she says. But her very first job was in middle school, when she read the community calendar on local circuit TV in her hometown. Her first car was actually the family car. “It was my dad’s 1991 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham D’elegance. It was the longest Cadillac ever made and was white with a navy blue interior. My friends called it the ‘L Dog,’’’ she laughs. Most recently, Veronica has been reading Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know by Adam Grant, and listening to the podcast “Throughline” by NPR. She’s a night person who loves pepperoni pizza. And although she doesn’t have any pets right now, she loves all the fluffers, she says.

For 20th wedding anniversaries, the traditional gifts are china and/or platinum, items known for both their beauty and strength, to signify the delicacy and durability of the bond. BSRI takes its commitment to our community seriously; it is, in many ways, a marriage of sorts. There is a reciprocal flow of mutual aid and benefit, of care and support. As we celebrate this 20th anniversary, we pay tribute to the ways in which we have made this journey together. We have weathered many storms, both literally and figuratively, from Hurricane Florence, which impacted so many of our seniors, to the recent global pandemic. These challenges have strengthened our connections and abilities to adapt. Among our recent accomplishments are: •

We have blossomed to five senior centers, with the addition of Leland, Supply, and Calabash centers just in the last five years. We have maintained a North Carolina DHHS distinction as

Through the tireless work of our volunteers, we managed a successful pivot to drivethrough meal services and virtual activities in times of pandemic closure and welcomed our seniors back to programs in centers upfitted with touch-free fixtures.

During the pandemic we have managed to provide diligent case management and services to our homebound and community-based clients, which is crucial to supporting independence and the ability of many to age in place.
Not unlike the larger Brunswick County population trends, our client base has grown tremendously, and we 20 YEARS, con nued on page 6

Senior Tar Heel Legislature Needs You
T
he North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature (STHL) assesses the needs of older citizens in a forum modeled after the North Carolina General Assembly. STHL then makes recommendations to the General Assembly about legislation to benefit older North Carolinians. The STHL was established in 1993 to:
•
Provide information to senior citizens on the legislative process and matters being considered by the General Assembly.
•
Promote citizen involvement and advocacy concerning aging issues before the General Assembly.
•
Assess the legislative needs of older citizens.
Delegate Needed We currently have no delegate in Brunswick County; a new delegate is needed. There is one delegate to STHL from each of the 100 counties in North Carolina, and usually an alternate delegate too. Delegates and alternates must be age 60 or older. The North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) provides staff support for the Senior Tar Heel Legislature, in cooperation with the 16 Area Agencies on Aging (AAA), which

STHL is Meeting Online The first in a series of virtual information sessions was offered by the Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) in January, according to Rebecca Freeman, Consumer Affairs and Legislative Liaison for the DAAS. The webinar gave an overview of the new state budget and showed how STHL priorities were impacted. Freeman encourages candidates to apply who are open to using email and participating in virtual meetings. Those without that service at home can go to a senior center, library, or AAA for access. “STHL has had to pivot like everyone else, and some are really starting to see the benefits of technology,” Freeman says. 20 Years and Counting
BSRI CELEBRATES ITS 20th YEAR OF SERVING BRUNSWICK COUNTY SENIORS
I
n 2002, 20 years ago, Brunswick County commissioners established Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) as a nonprofit agency to provide senior adult services. The commissioners expected growth of the 60-and-older population and wanted to address the coming need. They began to set up funding through grant awards, government support, and other fundraising. The initial four locations were housed in older buildings. Jim Russell served as the first BSRI executive director under a board of directors, and they sought to add space and locations. By 2006, BSRI and Brunswick County’s plan was to
offer five large senior centers in communities across the county. When the economy made a downturn in 2009, building was placed on hold. When it rebounded, BSRI added staff, including the current CEO, Jim Fish, and picked up steam on programming and services. BSRI now manages five fullservice senior centers, in Calabash, Leland, Shallotte, Southport, and Supply, all of which are recognized as Senior Centers of Excellence. And BSRI supports the meal program in Boiling Spring Lakes and Oak Island. In addition, BSRI operates two thrift stores and is breaking ground on new senior
housing in Calabash.
The Heart of BSRI As we mark 20 years of service to older adults in Brunswick County, we recognize the dedication of our staff and directors. Their determination, commitment, and community spirit have moved mountains. Our senior participants make the centers a place full of heart. They are the daily reason for BSRI as we strive to promote the well-being and quality of life of senior adults in Brunswick County. We’ll continue to provide programs and service to sustain senior independence as we move toward the future together.

Take Southport’s African American History Tour Events at the Southport Historical Society This Month “This February, the Southport Historical Society offers several programs relating to Black History Month,” President Liz Fuller says. “This is our 10th annual Brunswick County Black History Symposium.” All programs are free, on Zoom, and open to the public. Feb. 8, 1 p.m. Southport Second Tuesday Talk: Ms. Cora Lee Green Southport Historical Society Board member Donnie Joyner will talk about Southport native and 1954 Brunswick County Training graduate Cora Lee, who was trained as a nurse and was recognized for being a leader of the community. Cora Lee was the first woman to become a member of the Brunswick County Community College’s Board of Trustees. Feb. 25 – 27. 10th Annual 3-Day Brunswick County Black History Symposium

You can learn more about the contributions these citizens made by following a self-guided tour of significant African American historic sites in Southport. Take a drive during Black History month to visit some illuminating sites and learn some history that may have been left out of your schoolbooks. Go to bit.ly/31EfzHw to find the Pocket Sites Tour. It’s designed to be used with an app, but you can also follow along at the website.
A Drive through History “The Southport African American History Tour was developed several years ago in conjunction with the installation of our African American Education Exhibit at the free Ft. Johnston Southport Museum and Visitor Center,” says Liz Fuller, president of the Southport Historical Society. “The Pocket Sites tour highlights 17 significant locations in Black history, including churches, cemeteries, and local businesses that were prevalent during the Jim Crow era of legalized segregation,” Fuller says.
Learning About Learning The tour includes sites such as the Brunswick County Training School (BCT), 701 N. Lord Street, which was the only Black school in Brunswick County to go above the eighth grade until the 1950s. It was not integrated until

1970. Brunswick County Community College now stands on the site. Any African American student in the county who wanted to go to high school attended here. And students from outside Southport would stay with local families during the week in order to obtain their education.
The school cost more than $11,000 to build in 1924. Southport's African American community raised half the money. The rest was paid for by a combination of public funds, donations by the white community and a grant from the Rosenwald Foundation (which helped build schools for African American pupils across the South).
The first graduating class was in 1929. It consisted of one pupil, Bertha Bryant. Over the next 40-plus years, numerous students followed in Bryant’s footsteps. The final class graduated in 1972. Many BCT graduates went on to attend college and had distinguished careers in education, business, government, and the military.

A
new year brings new resolutions. If you have resolved to improve your health, meet new people, or just have fun in 2022, try taking a line dancing class. Line dancing dates back to the 1600s and was brought to this country by settlers immigrating to America. Some think that this type of dance is related to Contra dances, which are European folk dances where dancers form two lines facing

each other and perform a series of steps in time to the music. Line dancing found a home in the Western part of the United States and was very quickly associated with Country music.
Leland Classes Step Up Veronica Lett-McGee, director of the Brunswick Center at Leland, says line dancing is very popular with seniors. “The classes are always packed.
We have from 20 to 30 people taking line dancing classes twice a week. It’s a great cardiovascular exercise that’s more like play than work. And then, there’s the cognitive advantage: Learning something new keeps your brain engaged and increases its neuroplasticity, or the ability of the brain to remember new tasks.” Line Dance instructor Patty Farley, who teaches the hour-long Intermediate Line Dancing class, adds, “It improves your muscular

strength and flexibility and also improves your balance and coordination, lung capacity, and bone strength.”

Farley says that while this is a line dancing class, she considers it an exercise class. “It’s a mental and physical workout. You develop muscle memory based on the dance steps. You hear, you think, and then your body reacts with the correct steps,” she says. The center offers a beginner’s class and an intermediate class. The intermediate class has a higher level of complexity. “Some of the basic line dancing steps have roots in the Cha-cha-cha and the box steps, so if you have ever done ballroom dancing, you will recognize the step and the movement,” Farley says. “The decision to take beginner’s or intermediate line dance classes depends on the person. If you can already do the stroll and the grapevine and have flexibility and mobility in your hips, the intermediate class is for you.”
Step by Step Linda Wadhams, who teaches the beginner’s class, agrees. “If you’ve never done line dancing or just aren’t comfortable on the dance floor, start in the beginner’s class. The first week of class I break down each individual step, how to do them, and what they are called. We don’t move forward until everyone in the class is comfortable with the steps. “The beginner’s class is also at a slower pace. There aren’t as many steps taught in this class so we can pay attention to the basics and start
getting people to develop that muscle memory that Patty talked about,” Wadhams says. “Beginner’s is a very popular class. We have anywhere from 20 to 25 people in the class, most of whom are women looking for social interaction and a way to have fun.” The average age in each class is
70 to 75, although Nancy, a member of the intermediate class, is 82 and has been dancing for years. The classes may have different steps and a different tempo, but one thing was evident—everyone had a great time. Line dancing is an excellent social exercise. You don’t need a partner and you master a new task as a team.

Planning Preserves Independence By Casey Freed Southport Case Manager
F
ebruary is National Senior Independence Month and living an independent lifestyle is important to many of us. Perhaps the most important step for maintaining independence is to plan early. If you want to age in place, consider a few key factors. Making new friends means you have some social support when it’s needed, helping you age in place and maintain independence. Join in meals and programs at your local senior center to meet new people and establish a support network, especially if you don’t have family nearby.
Consider Modifying Your Home Plan to age in place and maintain your independence by creating a safe environment at home. Community organizations like the Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry, The Brunswick Baptist Association, and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Independent Living Department can provide bathroom modifications, ramps, rails, and other home modifications at little or no cost depending on your income or level of need. A case manager at your local senior center can provide contact information and eligibility requirements.
Create Support Systems A strong social support system is
a key factor to maintaining independence. Brunswick County has a growing community of retirees who have moved away from their home state and away from adult children and relatives. Geographical barriers prevent these loved ones from providing the assistance that is sometimes needed in the aging process. In the absence of familial support, a healthy aging lifestyle establishes social supports within the community. Participating in activities at your local senior center is a great way to establish reciprocally giving friendships.
Embrace Technology With a smartphone or tablet and home internet service, seniors can reduce the need to drive. They can meet with doctors online, have groceries delivered to their home, and video-chat with family and friends. There are also new advancements in alert systems that work with your cell phone and are
available with no monthly fee. A federal assistance program called Lifeline offers low-cost internet to qualifying seniors, and your local senior center offers technology classes to help you learn how to use apps and devices. Contact the case manager at your center for more information.

Garden Dreaming on Such a Winter’s Day By Pat Naughton

Now is a good me to get gardening equipment ready for the season.
his is my favorite time for gardening, and I never have to leave my recliner. I enjoy looking through seed catalogs and dreaming about that fantasy garden with no weeds or insects, just ripe vegetables waiting to be picked. There are things to do now to get ready for that fantasy garden. Leah Dail, a Master Gardener Volunteer from Wake County, has a great video on YouTube on this topic. The link is below. Here are some suggestions from her presentation. First establish your last frost date. According to the Brunswick County Extension Planting Guide, the average last frost is March 16. Farmer’s Almanac predicts this year’s last frost will be April 2 for Brunswick County. I keep a garden log of frost dates, plantings, and fertilizer. For the last two years the latest last frost was April 10. If you plant after Good Friday— which is also Tax Day, April 15— you will be safe. Use this date to count back to start plants from seeds indoors. Refer to the seed packet or one of the gardening guides below for recommended time for transplants. Add a few days for placing plants outside to allow them to harden off.
Soil testing is a good thing to do before each growing season. Soil sample boxes are available at the Brunswick County Extension office and at some gardening centers. The cost is $4 till March 31, and free after that till Dec. 1. It’s recommended that garden soil be tested every three years.

Stories and Songs for Black History Month By Donna Ruth Morgan
I
n February we focus on African American contributions to history. African Americans contribute to our country, our community, and our centers every day, but we set aside this month to mark their essential role in our past and to examine how they are shaping American life now. All these books are available to Brunswick County libraries, and February is a great month to stay home and read. Will by Will Smith and Mark Manson (2021) takes us from the performer’s childhood in Philadelphia to recent events. It’s a fascinating look into a “charmed life” as it plays out in a series of lessons, personal striving, and determination. Living a public life requires a strong ego, but at times Will’s braggadocio seems a cover for personal inadequacies. Nutshell review: The author wraps motional catharsis and self-promotion in sincerity that invites readers to identify with him.
Will Smith is a popular actor, rapper, and film producer. He has been nominated for five Golden Globe Awards and two Academy Awards, and has won four Grammy Awards. His autobiography is reviewed above.

The Other Black Girl (2021) was touted as a psychological thriller plus science fiction in literary realism style. Debut novelist Zakiya Dalila Harris moves beyond commentary on racism in the workplace, mocking office politics and coworker drama and culminating in a zany scheme of brain manipulation to create compliant Black women employees. Snarky and satirical, but too many characters and a meandering storyline detract from the entertainment. Nutshell review: Genrebending with intriguing concepts. The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois (2021) is an epic read—816 pages spanning 200 years with a focus on Black and Indigenous women. Honoree Fanonne Jeffers’ novel is full of trauma, tragedy, and triumph in an ever-shifting timeline. Parallel excerpts from Du Bois’ works (songs) precede chapters that chronicle an American family from colonial slave trading through the Civil War to the present. Nutshell review: Heavy read, physically and psychologically. Kaia Alderson’s Sisters in Arms (2021) follows two fictional women from Harlem serving in the factual Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps during WWII. They fought the Nazis and their own cultural biases while overcoming misogyny and racism. Their deployment was with the All-Black 6888th Battalion in Europe, which was tasked with clearing warehouses of undelivered mail to ensure soldiers at the front heard from their loved ones. Nutshell review: Rather disappointing in its paucity of actual occurrences to address underrepresented Black History.

Gorman’s musical poetry is widely popular and her 2021 book, Call Us What We Carry, con nues her contemporary crea ons and is reviewed below.
Richard Wight’s legendary novel Native Son and agonizing autobiography Black Boy were de rigueur reading for generations. The Man Who Lived Underground (2021) is a novella in three acts—an expansion of a 1946 short story. Over three-quarters of a century later its message about injustice horrifyingly is unchanged. The short book is appended with a lengthy essay, “Memories of my Grandmother,” the background to the story. Nutshell review: Existential, almost philosophical at times.
Inaugural poet Amanda Gorman creatively presents a mix of poetry, prose, historical documents, and modern communiqués in Call Us What We Carry (2021) This book is so deeply emotive its seven sections often brought this reviewer to tears: remembrances of those lost, collective grief over pandemics past and present, mourning over inhumanity and the earth, and hope for the future. Nutshell review: Shaped poems, wordplay and thematic devices add to the reading experience.

Two Medicare Open Enrollment Periods Submitted by M. René Tarquinio
T
he SHIIP Program saw an extremely active Medicare Open Enrollment Period from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, 2021. Data is still being entered, but at this time we have calculated over 500 Medicare appointments, over 200 phone calls, and an estimated cost savings of $306,000! The Medicare beneficiaries of Brunswick County could not have received the assistance that they did without the support and dedication provided by our SHIIP volunteers and by case management and center staff. Many thanks to everyone
who assisted during this busy time of year.
Medicare Advantage? Open Enrollment for You Although the annual Open Enrollment Period has ended, if you are already in a Medicare Advantage Plan you have another Open
Enrollment Period from Jan. 1 to March 31. During this time period you can: •
Switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan with or without drug coverage.
•
Drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and go back to Original Medicare. You can also join a Medicare drug plan.
The SHIIP program is available to assist Medicare beneficiaries throughout the year. If you need assistance, please call (910) 754-2300 to schedule an appointment with a SHIIP counselor.
