appy Holidays, everyone! We made it to the end of another year and 2016 will go down as another great 12 months of hard work, dedication, and accomplishment. I am so proud of the way that our community has come together to support, provide resources, and improve the quality of life for our seniors. There is no better feeling than standing as a witness at the intersection where need meets generosity. It just simply brings me unlimited joy. My hope for this holiday season would be an increased measure of generosity, service, and love. There are so many examples of generosity that it is impossible to bring recognition to each and to publicly thank all those who make it possible. I would like to take a moment to thank our seniors, the BSRI board of directors, county managers and county commissioners for their commitment to our senior community. I am pleased to announce that our commissioners voted to proceed with the purchase of 101 Stone Chimney Road for the purposes of converting it into a senior center (see story on page 32). The sale of the building is contingent on a thorough inspection of

the structure and property. If no significant deficiencies are discovered, we expect that the building will be acquired sometime this month and we plan to open the center during the month of January 2017. Congratulations to the communities of Supply, Lockwood Folly, Sunset Harbor, and southern Bolivia.

Dec. 7. This is a great time to review your insurance coverage and it’s the only time you can make changes. Our SHIIP program can help. SHIIP is free to those eligible for Medicare and is available in Shallotte and Southport. To get the most out of your session, please make a reservation. Reservations help us know how to prepare employee and volunteer schedules. To schedule an appointment, call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Karen. Sawyer and Associates have created a floor plan for the new Calabash Area Senior Center and property surveying has been completed. The kitchen is now being designed and kitchen drawings should be completed this month. The bid process to select a qualified contractor to complete the construction will be the next step. BSRI is seeking community support from area residents, businesses, and nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new center. We must raise $100,000 to meet that need; so far, $25,000 has been raised. If you would like to make a contribution or serve on the committee, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. The new Leland Center is on track for the end of December deadline. BSRI was fortunate enough to receive a grant from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation to complete the kitchen. When the kitchen for the center was planned two years ago, it only
The Leland Center is nearing completion! BSRI is grateful for a grant from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation that will enable us to establishing a full service kitchen in the new Brunswick Center at Leland from opening day. included equipment for a warming kitchen. With the news of this new grant, BSRI will proceed with establishing a full-service kitchen from opening day. It is possible that this change may postpone our opening for a week or so, but that remains to be seen. If the building is completed on time, the community can expect that we will do an official grand opening sometime in January 2017. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new Leland Center. No donation is too small and all donations are tax deductible. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. Please be mindful of those around you this holiday season. I am burdened by the thought of those who will pass the coming days in loneliness. The magnitude of this problem cannot be overcome by one organization
alone. Please reach out to those who suffer in isolation. May the spirit of the holidays be with you and yours!

We will soon move to the new Leland Center, but first we’ll say goodbye to the old center, the former Leland School. In this issue, former Leland School principal Nelson Best (left), former student Louise Harrison, and former secretary Helen Best tell their stories of integration circa 1969. Read about it on page 12.

Millions of Americans have or are at risk for diabetes, one of the leading causes of death in the United States. The disease can lead to kidney failure, amputations, and blindness. November is American Diabetes Month, the perfect time for you to find out if you’re at risk and learn about the benefits Medicare covers if you have diabetes. Many people with diabetes don’t know that they have it—fortunately, Medicare covers screening tests so you can find out if you do. If you’re at high risk for developing diabetes, Medicare covers up to 2 fasting blood glucose (blood sugar) tests each year. If your doctor accepts assignment, you pay nothing for these tests. You may be at high risk for diabetes if you’re obese, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of diabetes. Talk to your doctor to find out when you should get your free screening test. If you have diabetes, Medicare covers many of your supplies, including test strips, monitors, and control solutions. In some cases, Medicare also covers therapeutic shoes if you have diabetic foot problems. You pay 20%
of the Medicare-approved amount for these supplies. Medicare also covers diabetes self-management training to help you learn how to better manage your diabetes. You can learn how to monitor your blood sugar, control your diet, exercise, and manage your prescriptions. Talk to your doctor about how this training can help you stay healthy and avoid serious complications. Medicare also offers the Everyone with Diabetes Counts (EDC) program—a program that offers selfmanagement group sessions to some people who live in underserved and rural communities. If you’re eligible, you pay nothing to participate in the program. To find out if you’re eligible or if there’s an available class near you, contact the Quality Innovation Network – Quality Improvement Organization (QIN-QIO) in your state. You can learn more about American Diabetes Month and how to prevent and treat this disease from the American Diabetes Association at diabetes.org. Take steps to fight diabetes today—talk to your doctor today about screening tests and what supplies and training you may need to stay healthy. Submitted by M. René Tarquinio, LBSW

The biggest challenge during the holidays is maintaining healthy eating goals, since most activities include food. Follow the “myplate” guidelines for healthy choices at parties and gatherings:

Try simple food substitutions during meal preparation. Use plain nonfat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Add extra sautéed vegetables and whole grain breads or brown rice to stuffing. Add shredded cauliflower or summer squash to casseroles for extra volume and nutrition. Substitute a sharp cheddar cheese for a mild cheese in a recipe to use less without losing flavor.
Fruits in desserts are naturally sweet, allowing you to use less sugar in the recipe. Add mashed banana, applesauce, or plain nonfat Greek yogurt to replace some of the fat in recipes.
If you know you are going to have that sugar cookie, or piece of pecan pie for dessert, forego the dinner roll with your meal.
Cheers! Some healthy drink choices include spiced tea, seltzer water with sliced lime or lemon or a splash of fruit juice, wine spritzer made with dry wine, and club soda with ice.

Our History
A Moment in History: Saying By Adrienne Brown, Assistant Center Director, Leland

efore we say goodbye to the old Leland Center, the Leland Center staff would like to honor our senior participants by telling their story about their place in history. I had the opportunity to interview former student Mrs. Louise Quince Harrison and retired principal of the Leland School Mr. Nelson Best, as they shared their memories of the first year that the Leland school became integrated. Nelson and Helen Best are two pillars of the Leland community. They are revered by their by former students in the highest regard—so much so that those students have paid for meals at restaurants just to show their gratitude. Mr. Best was a basketball coach in Greenville for five years prior to becoming the principal for the first integrated graduating class at the Leland School in 1969. Mrs. Best worked alongside her husband for a short time as the school secretary. Mr. Best says he knew that the schools were moving towards integration: “It was a necessary thing,” he said. Mrs. Louise Quince Harrison, a retired medical assistant, was one of the students in the first integrated graduating class. “I felt good about integration,” Mrs. Harrison said. Being around white kids didn’t bother her. Mrs. Harrison knew that it would be different, but was curious about what the change would bring. She recalls being “a little scared, but glad to see that integra-

tion was happening because civil rights activists had worked so hard for it.”
Mr. and Mrs. Best reminisced about living in the principal’s home on campus where they provided housing for exchange students. During their first year, they stayed up late at night poring through the records of the students within the district expected to attend the Leland School. They worked tirelessly to make sure each student would have the credits they needed to graduate. During his three years as principal, Mr. Best created close relationships with his staff. He fondly re-
members his relationship with Vice Principal Edgar Gore. At that time it was not unusual see a white principal and a black assistant principal in integrated schools. Mr. Best believed that the unity between he and his assistant principal helped set the example for students to learn what it meant to be unified. When integration began, the Leland School consisted of 60 percent white students and 40 percent black students. Mr. Best was committed to making sure that his students felt comfortable and were able to relate to staff. He did so by to making sure that there was a racial balance among the faculty and students. “Can’t recall any student ever saying anything bad about Mr.

Not everyone warmly received the school‟s integration process. As Mr. Best reflects, the bulk of his support came from black families, even when he had to suspended students because of misconduct. with it the best we could. We learn from each other. It might have been sometimes in a bad way, but we learned from each other.” Both Best and Harrison attribute the success of integrating Leland‟s first graduating class to God. I watched Mrs. Best‟s eyes light up as she talked about how proud she is of her husband. She remembers how they made it through the tough times: “The Lord was working in this school.” Now 84, Mr. Best says he hopes that the school remains standing in Leland as a part of history. He hopes that the building will continue to be used for a positive purpose.

Pearl Harbor Day is Wednesday, Dec. 7. There are not many veterans still here to tell the story of that fateful day in 1941 in which Pearl Harbor (Hawaii) was bombed. As a result, the US entered into World War II. Please honor those American servicemen and women whose bravery cost them their lives by flying the American flag at half-mast on this day.
Just for Fun — Origins of the New Year’s Day & Resolutions “In 2013, archaeologists found the world's oldest calendar in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It was remarkably sophisticated, allowing for astronomic corrections – and a stunning 10,000 years old. Until the Aberdeen discovery, all credit for marking the new year went to the Babylonians, and they partied hard. Four thousand years ago they rung in the new year with an 11-day festival, and are said to have made the first recorded New Year's resolutions – to the gods as a way of currying favour, but also themselves by resolving to get out of debt. When did we get the New Year as we know it? It all began with a toga party. The Romans named January after the two-faced god Janus – and this is where new year resolutions began in earnest. Janus wasn't a fence-sitter, a twotimer or a font of mendacity – he was the god of doors and new beginnings. In the spirit of moral rejuvenation, Romans pledged to be good to others – and for a few days the slaves of the city were treated to a feast and some social barriers were loosened, all to please the gods. Later, when Christianity took root and the pagan gods were banished, the new year promises became more moral and tied up with prayer. The January 1 marker, however, took a while to catch on – and it wasn't until 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII introduced his Gregorian calendar (which was really the Julian calendar from 46 BC) that Europe adhered to the New Year's Day that we celebrate today.” Source: www.canberratimes.com. A golf ball wouldn't be nearly as cute without the dimples, and a pit bull wouldn't melt your heart without the wrinkles—and those EYES! I’ve been looking for a new dog for a while. A pit bull puppy was the last option I considered. Then a new neighbor related a sad story: They had decided to give their puppy to the pound because their older chihuahua wasn’t tolerating her. That’s how I became the proud papa of a 30-pound, 3-month-old red-nose fur-baby named Piper. She is adapting quite nicely as she grows both in my heart and into those feet!

runswick County commissioners have agreed to purchase 101 Stone Chimney Place for a new senior center to serve the Supply area. The building was formerly home to the Brunswick County Realtors Association. Area seniors gathered at a county commissioners’ meeting in September to ask commissioners to buy the site. At the Nov. 7 meeting in Bolivia, the commissioners allocated $950,000 to make the purchase. Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) manages the current Supply site at 1691 Stanbury Rd. SW, formerly the Lockwood Folly Community Center (see programs on page 28). This site offers meals and activities Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. When BSRI acquired the
Stanbury Rd. site in January 2015, an expansion was planned to add 6,000 square feet. But that had an estimated price tag of $2 million. “When Stone Chimney became available, it became more cost-
effective to acquire that structure,” BSRI President Jim Fish said. The property is 14,000 square feet and will cost about $65 per square foot. Supply-area seniors used to meet at Mt. Pisgah Church. When seniors needed to vacate that site in spring 2012, BSRI opened a site in Lockwood Folly and a site in Sunset Harbor. Two sites were needed so patrons wouldn’t have to travel long distances. But it split up a group that had been close-knit. “A group that was divided will be reunited under one roof,” Fish said. “The Stone Chimney Road location will be less than 11 miles from Sunset Harbor.”
When the property came on the market at a reduced price, seniors and BSRI staff went to the county commissioners and asked them to move quickly—and they have. “This building was a surprise,” Fish said. Plans are to close on the property in December, and upfit and open the building as a daily nutrition site in January. After the new Calabash center opens next summer, BSRI will turn its attention toward creating a full-service center at the Stone Chimney site, adding case management services and expanded hours. “This site is an important cog in the wheel of providing services for the fastest-growing population in Brusnwick County,” Fish said, “Especially on the east side of Highway 17, where tremendous growth is taking place. It will be a real benefit to the area.”
