SHIIP MONTHLY NEWS
by M. René Tarquinio, LBSW
- The Social Security Administration announced that there will not be a cost-of-living increase for 2016. Information about the Medicare premium changes for 2016 have not yet been announced. Should there be an increase in the Medicare Part B premium, the law contains a “hold harmless” provision that protects most Medicare beneficiaries from paying a higher Part B premium. Those not protected include Medicare beneficiaries with higher incomes who are subject to an income-adjusted Part B premium and those beneficiaries who will be newly entitled to Part B in 2016. You can find additional information on the announcement on the Social Security Administration’s website, www.ssa.gov.
You’ll need a MyMedicare.gov account to sign up for eMSNs. If you don’t have an account, visit MyMedicare.gov and select “Create an Account”. Once you’ve signed up for your MyMedicare.gov account (or if you already have an account), complete these 5 steps between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. (Eastern Time): 1. Login to MyMedicare.gov. 2. Select "My Account" from the menu. 3. In the “User information” tab, choose "Email and Correspondence Settings." 4. In the "Electronic Medicare Summary Notices (eMSNs)" area, select "Edit." 5. Select "Yes" and then "Submit" and you’re done. When your eMSN is available, you’ll get an email letting you know that you can view your eMSN at MyMedicare.gov.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, EVERYONE! We made it to the end of another year and 2015 will go down as a great twelve months of hard work, dedication and accomplishment. I am so proud of the way that our community has come together to support, provide resources, and improve the quality of life for our seniors. There is no better feeling than standing as a witness at the intersection where need meets generosity. It simply brings me unlimited joy. My hope for this holiday season would be an increased measure of generosity, service and love. There are so many examples of generosity that it is impossible to bring recognition to each and to publicly thank all those who make it possible. I would like to take a moment to highlight one such project that has helped to renew and beautify one of our senior centers. Recently, the Brunswick Center at Southport celebrated its five-year anniversary as an important location for seniors to enjoy themselves and access programs and services. After five years and more than 5,000 seniors served, the interior was beginning to show some age. Through a grant written by center staff and the
incredible commitment to the community by Lowes Home Improvement Inc., the Brunswick Center at Southport was able to get necessary wall repairs and a fresh coat of much-needed paint. This was no small project as the center is approximately 14,000 square feet in size. The employees at Lowes Home Improvement organized and donated materials, supplied employee time, and helped gather volunteers to complete the project in only two days. Thank you, Lowes Home Improvement, for helping us to look our best! FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4

News and Announcements
Brunswick County Commissioners voted at the November regular meeting to enter into a contract to purchase property in Calabash for the purpose of creating a new senior center. While the contract includes contingencies for inspection and engineering, it can be reasonably expected that if there are no significant findings, the transaction will be closed around the beginning of the calendar year. Seniors from the Shallotte, Calabash, and Ash sites are invited to participate in the Town of Shallotte Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 5. There are a limited number of spaces available, so if you’re interested, please make a reservation by calling (910) 754-2300 and asking for Debra Marlowe. Medicare open enrollment enters its final month and the election period ends Dec. 7. This is your last chance to make adjustments to Medicare Health Insurance plans. BSRI offers advice on choosing a Medicare plan through our SHIIP program. This service is free to individuals who are eligible for Medicare and is available in Leland, Shallotte, and Southport. To get the most out of your session, we respectfully request that you make an appointment so that we can prepare employee and volunteer schedules. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please call (910) 754-2300. The demolition phase for the new Leland Senior Center has begun with the removal of the original Leland Town Hall building. The project continues to move forward and
appears to be on schedule for groundbreaking in January 2016. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, businesses and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies and furnishings that will be non-budgeted items for the new Leland Center. If you would like to make a contribution toward the new center, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. HAPPY NEW YEAR! The end of the calendar year is approaching and BSRI will be celebrating the new year with its second annual New Year’s Eve Party on Thursday, Dec. 31. This year’s event will feature music by the Brunswick Big Band and dinner by ART Catering. Dinner begins at 7:30 p.m. and the evening will end at 11 p.m. with a toast to 2016. Tickets are $35 each and are available by calling (910) 7542300. All proceeds benefit the Meals on Wheels program for 2016. A special thanks to the volunteers, contributors and staff who make it possible to fulfill the important mission of this organization. It is simply impossible to list all those who have publicly and privately supported BSRI. These special people understand that providing services to our seniors is a collaborative and community effort. We are most grateful for the time, resources and work provided by all. I would like to repeat a plea to those of you who will be with us for the month of December. Please reach out to those who suffer in isolation. The commitment of a measure of your time will cure the ills of loneliness as we strive to assure that all feel valued. May the spirit of the holidays be with you and yours!
Your Devoted Servant, Jim

We Need Your Help at BSRI after participants come and go.
By Sarah Powell Volunteer Coordinator
We need all hands in! BSRI is currently looking for volunteers in several areas. Volunteers are encouraged to volunteer once or twice a week consistently, but may choose to volunteer less or more.
Ways you can help us provide nourishment to the seniors of Brunswick County: 1. Meals on Wheels drivers are needed to deliver meals to homebound seniors.
-
For BSRI to run as efficiently as possible, we need:
Two volunteers each morning to help open at each nutrition site. Shifts are from about 8 -10 a.m.
Two volunteers to help close and clean up. Shifts will range from about 12 -2 p.m.
Two volunteers each afternoon from about 12-2 p.m. to serve congregate meals at each center and nutrition site.
2. Congregate meal servers are needed to serve the senior center participants lunch daily.
Potential volunteers, please keep in mind that all tasks are equally important. From cleaning up after lunch to teaching an exercise class, all are important and must be done to help us achieve our massive goal.
3. Cleanup volunteers are needed to assist with cleanup after meals are served.
Our mission is to promote the wellbeing and enhance the quality of life for all senior adults of Brunswick County.
4. Help open and close sites and centers by assembling chairs and tables, and tidying up before and/or
Please be a part of helping us achieve our mission. We can’t do it without you!

2015 Trips in Review
In August, 24 seniors took a BSRI trip to Brookgreen Gardens, south of Myrtle Beach.

those particular dates, place your name and number on the waiting list and we will call you when we offer the trip again.
IN DECEMBER 2014, Brunswick Senior Resources began providing overnight and day trips. What a fantastic ride the year has been! We want to thank more than 300 of you for traveling with us.
Next, we sailed away to the Caribbean on a Carnival Cruise. We also toured Historic Savannah, GA in May of 2015 and recently returned from a trip to the Amish Country in Lancaster, PA.
BSRI offered five overnight trips and too many day trips to count. Our first trip to Asheville was such a huge success that two trips were needed to ensure everyone got to go! If we are offering a trip that you are interested in going on but can't go
Several BSRI sites now offer monthly shopping trips. Day trips have also been a huge success. We have been to Myrtle Beach, Wilmington, and to our most successful and recent trip to the North Carolina State Fair. We hope to offer a day trip each month and an overnight trip once a quarter. Upcoming trip information is on page 6. We are always looking for suggestions on places to go, so please email them to Susan Whitley at swhitley@bsrinc.org.

Sites for 2016: We plan to offer many deluxe motor coach day trips, “Mary Tudor” at Thalian Hall in Wilmington, an Alaskan cruise, and a New England & Canada cruise. Maybe we’ll have a trip to Ireland in March 2017, and much more! Contact Susan Whitley at (910) 454-0583 for more information. It has been a true pleasure, and we hope to see you on the next trip.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING
W
hen you’re ready to do your Christmas shopping, look no further than Brunswick Senior Resources’ new Thrift Store in Calabash. You never know what unusual items you’ll find— and at a bargain price. “It’s very popular now to buy secondhand,” said Nicholas Bowen, Coordinator of Thrift Store Operations. “Especially during the holidays, with people having to buy gifts and find unique items.” The BSRI Thrift Store is set up to make shopping fun. “It’s like a boutique,” Bowen said. “It’s not just a thrift store. You don’t have to jumble through bins. Things are on hangers, the atmosphere is friendly, the shop is decorated.”
Many people love thrift store shopping because you never know what you might find. At the BSRI Thrift Store, you’ll find antiques, discontinued items, and one-ofa-kind pieces you’ll never find anywhere else. Staff makes sure everything is good, clean, and ready for sale. “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure,” Bowen said.

If you need Christmas decorations, head to the BSRI Thrift Shop first. All year long, as donations arrive, staff have set aside the holiday decorations in tubs. They’ve pulled them out just in time for the season.
“We have Christmas trees, lights— anything Christmas-related,” Bowen said. Clothes are also put out seasonally, so cold-weather clothing is hanging on the thrift store racks right now. THRIFT STORE, continued on page 13

Meet Jean Palmer, our December Angel Jean is a kind and caring lady who loves giving back to her community. As a member of the Calabash Elk’s Ladies’ Auxiliary, Jean pioneered the “On Your Lap” project which provides free, hand-made afghans to elderly people in need of a little extra warmth during the (increasingly colder) winter months. Jean donates her gorgeous afghans to the Brunswick Center at Shallotte where her marvelous gifts are hand-carried to homebound, elderly Meals-on-Wheels recipients who could use an afghan “hug.” Here’s what Jean shared with the Buzz. How did you become interested in crocheting? What kind of yarn and hook do you use to make your afghans? How much yarn is needed and how long does it take to finish an afghan?
How many afghans have you made to date? Men aren’t fond of “girlie” colors. What colors do you use for those manly men who need to stay warm? Do you ever meet the people who receive your afghans? How do they react? Is there anything else you’d like to share with the readers?
My mother always crocheted and she taught me when I was young. I’ve been crocheting for over 45 years and make up the patterns as I go. The afghan pattern I use is called a ripple [or Chevron] stitch which has been around for a very long time. I use Red Heart Supersaver acrylic yarn because it’s soft, is easily laundered, and people aren’t usually allergic to it [as opposed to wool.] I use a “J” size hook—because my name begins with “J”! Using a single color, it takes about 4 skeins of 7oz yarn (about 364 yards). Sometimes I use two colors, but I don’t ordinarily use tweed because it’s more costly. I can finish an afghan in a week if I crochet a few hours every evening; but...I have to be in the mood to crochet. It’s a creative process and you can’t rush creativity. I started the project in November 2011 and I just finished my 165th afghan. The largest number afghans I donated at one time was 43! The next largest amount was 35. Generally I use more neutral colors: black, grey, beige and caramel. I often combine those colors for interest. Now that fall colors are available, I can use burgundy, dark greens, and gold; but, working at night, the darker colors make it harder to see the stitches. My favorite colors are purples and shades of pink. I generally don’t see the recipients; but, sometimes I give my afghans directly to people I know who need one. They usually smile, thank me, and often cry because they’re so touched that a stranger would think of them and give them such a wonderful gift. Crocheting is only one of the many ways I love to create. Crocheting these afghans for people who need them brings me a lot of joy and this creativity gives purpose to my life.
Thank you, Jean, for giving so unselfishly of your time and talents to make someone else’s life better. I think you summarized the sentiment well on the hang tag you put on each afghan: “May your heart also be warmed knowing other people care.” (On Your Lap Project) Calabash Elks Ladies Auxiliary #2679. Jean lives in Carolina Shores. Mary Boyd with her afghan

Nutrition & Food Safety Game Hens with Brussels Sprouts & Chestnuts Makes: 8 servings, 1/2 game hen & 3/4 cup vegetables each Active Time: 40 minutes Total Time: 1 hour 25 minutes
Ingredients
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 4 Cornish game hens, 1-1 1/2 pounds each 2 teaspoons butter 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 large red onion, peeled and cut into 8 wedges 2 pounds Brussels sprouts, cut in half (about 6 cups) 16 ounces jarred roasted chestnuts, (2 1/2 cups; see Shopping Tip) 2 tablespoons white-wine vinegar
Preparation 1. 2.
3. 4.
5.
Shopping tip: Cooked peeled chestnuts are available in jars in the baking aisle or with seasonal foods at many supermarkets.
Preheat oven to 375°F. Combine thyme, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Remove giblets from game hens and trim any excess skin. Loosen the skin over the breast and thigh meat and rub half the thyme mixture under the skin. Tie legs together with kitchen string. Heat butter and oil in a roasting pan set over 2 burners on medium heat. Add the hens and brown on all sides, 10 to 12 minutes. Add onion to the pan, transfer to the oven and roast for 10 minutes. Add Brussels sprouts and roast for 20 minutes. Stir chestnuts and the remaining mixture into the pan. Continue roasting until an instantread thermometer inserted into a thigh registers 165°F, 10 to 15 minutes more. Transfer the game hens to a cutting board. Let rest for 10 minutes. Place the roasting pan over 2 burners on medium heat. Toss the vegetables with vinegar and bring to a simmer, gently stirring and scraping up any browned bits. Remove string from the game hens, turn breastside down and slice in half lengthwise using a large heavy knife, cutting through to the breast side. Serve game hens with the vegetables.
Safe Cooking Guidelines Learn how to cook eggs, poultry, fish and meat safely
Cooking meat, poultry and fish safely Using a food thermometer to check the internal temperature of meat, poultry, and fish can help prevent foodborne illness. The USDA recommends the following minimum internal temperatures:
Beef, veal and lamb (steak and roasts), and fish: 145°F Pork and ground beef: 160°F Poultry: 165°F
Cooking eggs safely Even eggs that have clean, intact shells may be contaminated with salmonella, so it’s important to cook eggs thoroughly until both the yolk and the white are firm. Casseroles and egg dishes should be cooked to 160°F. However, the EatingWell Test Kitchen sometimes recommends cooking eggs to temperatures lower than those recommended by the USDA. Those at high risk—pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborns, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems or certain chronic illnesses—should follow the guidelines above and/or use pasteurized egg products, found in the dairy section of large supermarkets.
Cook meats like roasts and steaks to lower temperatures, closer to medium-rare, so that they retain their moisture. However, those who are at high risk for developing foodborne illness—pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborns, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems or certain chronic illnesses—should follow the USDA guidelines listed above.

International Paper Helps BSRI Build Ramps for Area Seniors BY DEBRA MARLOWE Organizational Development Coordinator BSRI recently received a grant award from International Paper, Riegelwood Mill, in the amount of $1500 in support of BSRI’s Wheelchair Ramps and Rails Program. BSRI provides the materials and recruits volunteer assistance with the building of about 100 wheelchair ramps and rails each year. Many seniors in Brunswick County are wheelchair bound and struggle to attend medical appointments or take care of everyday needs because they do not have a wheelchair ramp to securely maneuver into and out of their own homes. It is through BSRI’s Ramps and Rails Program that wheelchair ramps and rails are installed at the homes of
seniors who welcome the freedom and new lease on life this access gives them. International Paper Company conducts most of its U.S. philanthropic activities through its foundation, International Paper Foundation. From its inception in 1952 and continuing today, the foundation supports nonprofit organizations within the communities where International Paper has operating facilities. Grant funding and volunteers are both vital to the success of this program. Many of BSRI's dedicated Ramps and Rails volunteers work at, or have retired from, International Paper in Riegelwood. Thank you, International Paper, for your support of BSRI and the seniors we serve.
Thank You!
Santa Fills Christmas Stockings
S
tockings for Seniors brings a little Christmas spirit to area seniors each year. BSRI’s Stockings for Seniors program collects wishes from people in BSRI’s meal program and matches them with groups and individuals who want to spread some holiday cheer. Stockings for Seniors collects gifts such as socks, slippers, puzzle books, and household necessities for Christmas presents. Area seniors may submit wishes for two presents, and they are “adopted” by groups or who fulfill their first wish, and sometimes their second. BSRI and our gift recipients are grateful for the generosity of these donors. The St. James Service Club, composed of residents from St. James Plantation, fulfilled about 70 wishes this year in the Stockings for Seniors program. Pat Fornuff and Cindy Kirwan cochaired the program this year. More than 40 volunteers helped make angels, set up Christmas trees, and designate dropoff locations for gifts. BSRI is only one of the organization receiving gifts from the St. James Service Club. This benevolent club has raised more than $1 million during the past 15 years for charitable
causes. The Shallotte Senior Center helps fulfill the wishes of those in southern Brunswick County. The center will gather gifts for 150 to 200 recipients this year, said Anne Gass, director of The Brunswick Center at Shallotte. Donors from St. Brennan’s Church, the Shallotte Women’s Sorority, and area individuals will wrap each gift and bring it to the center for distribution. “I make it a point every year to go along and give a gift to a homebound person,” Gass said. “That’s the best part of all. The look on their face is amazing.” To cover the northern part of Brunswick County, Yvette Gosline, Vice President of Programs and Services, will set up a tree at the Leland Walmart on Nov. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. She’s hoping the stockings will be quickly adopted by thoughtful residents who want to share the joy of the Christmas season. BSRI would like to thank all those who donated time and gifts to make our Stockings for Seniors program a success. Merry Christmas!
The BSRI Mah Jongg Marathon on Sept. 16 was a big success! Dozens of mah jongg players headed to the Brunswick Center at Southport for the tournament and 50/50 raffle, and we raised more than $850. BSRI thanks event organizer Vicki Caruso and these local companies who generously donated prizes for the Mah Jongg Marathon:
