ith spring finally here, we feel a renewal of hope. The flowers are blooming, the days grow longer, and baby wildlife is everywhere. Happy sounds, smells, and feelings are all around. In The Brunswick Center at Southport, we also have sadness right now. We have lost a few of our members recently, but one who stands out was an esteemed instructor here at our center: Betsy Tucker.

Betsy taught card making classes at the Southport center for several years. We became fast friends through our love of humor and animals. One of the first times I met Betsy, she was accompanied by the most adorable Schnauzer, Daisy. Daisy’s owner had passed away and Betsy promised her friend that she would take care of Daisy. This was Betsy’s nature. Always helping others. Always laughing and making others laugh.

She made bucket potties for boats and mirrors with princess crowns on top, so you always looked ready for the red carpet. She could do it all, and she put her personal and entertaining spin on everything. If you knew Betsy Tucker, then you know what a jewel she was. I am beyond thankful for my relationship with her, even if it was way too short. My life is better because I knew her. She leaves behind an adoring husband, Robert, daughter Ashley, son in-law Matt, and three granddaughters, Hailey, Chloe, and Madeline. What a beautiful legacy. ake a look at this 2-3/4" by 5-1/2" 1921 Pocket Planner published by The Cook & Swan Oil Co. in New York. This little book is packed with more information than you can imagine and provides a unique snapshot of life in America 101 years ago. It’s a treasure for history buffs and collectors of Americana. Towards the front of the book are the many oils the company sold, that were commonly used back then. The book also includes loads of useful info like postage rates: A 1-oz. firstclass letter was only 2 cents in 1921. The book lists postal distances and times from New York City to dozens of U.S. and foreign cities and the “Shortest Routes and Time in Transit By Fastest Trains.” There’s a table of weights and measures, a page with weather flag signals from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Weather Bureau, and a couple pages listing legal holidays in the “Various States.”

This small 1921 Pocket Planner published by The Cook & Swan Oil Co. packs a lot of informa on into a small space. A dozen pages of maps show life 100 years ago, including this post-World War I view of Europe.

The middle of the book has over a dozen pages of full color maps of the U.S. and much of the rest of the world, including a map of “Reconstructed Europe” showing Ukraine as a separate country from Russia. The first page of maps is the Republic of Panama, showing the Panama Canal which opened in 1914. Toward the back of the book are all previous American and National League Pennant winners, along with interest rate and stock yield tables and rules for computing interest. The

book lists the population of most of the cities in the U.S. from both the 1910 and the 1920 censuses. Wilmington was just 14 spots above the last, with a population of 33,372 in 1920.

Stop by and shop with us in Calabash and Shallotte soon. Both stores have just completed their Spring Changeovers and are packed with lots of great spring and summer fashions.

Pushups 4 Parkinson’s: The 10-10-10 Challenge Promoting Awareness and Finding a Cure By Casey Freed BSRI Case Manager

W

“Pushing up has a literal and figurative meaning. In the literal sense, we’re exercising to improve our physical and mental health. But figuratively we are pushing through and making it through a difficult situation,” Evan says. And that is good for our soul and emotional health.

hen Evan Cutler’s father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at age 60, it hit his family hard. As his father Keith Cutler battled the debilitating physical effects of the disease, Evan altered his career and moved his family to be near his parents. His mother Arleen eventually became a fulltime caregiver. Keith’s illness lasted 14 years and in that time Evan needed to find a way to channel grief into positive action. He made a simple personal commitment to do a hundred push-ups every day for the rest of his life, as a way of

After his father’s death in 2017, Evan turned what was initially a personal challenge, dealing with his own grief, into a global effort to raise money and awareness in the fight against Parkinson’s. With the help of family, colleagues, and supporters, Evan created the Cutler Foundation, which now hosts the Push-Ups for Parkinson’s 100 Million Push-up Challenge.

$100 million to find a cure for Parkinson’s, to support caregivers, and to improve quality of life for those living with Parkinson’s. You may be asking yourself: What if I can’t do 10 “real” pushups? Evan took time out of his busy schedule to explain to us how the challenge works. “Anyone at any age can find a way to participate,” Evan says. “Do standing push-ups while holding on to the kitchen counter, or do modified push-ups: anything that is safe.” It doesn’t matter about how you do your push-ups. It’s more about working together to push through this fight against Parkinson’s.

Becoming part of the global initiative is simple: Do 10 pushups, give $10 at www.my101010.org, and challenge 10 friends to do the same. You can even post a video of your pushups to inspire others. Funds raised go to local, national, and worldwide organizations that focus on research for a cure, provide support for caregivers, and support education to family and professional care providers. To learn more, or to get involved today, go to www.pushups4parkinsons.org. Coastal Carolina Active Living’s Southport Center offers a Parkinson’s Support Group. challenges, such as full joint replacements, arthritis, recovery from a stroke, neuropathy, and balance issues. We use weights and bands in different weights. We have a wonderful new assortment of weights to offer, so there’s no need to purchase them.

My journey began when I earned my Geri-Fit teaching certification in June 2021. Geri-Fit is an evidence-based program designed exclusively for older adults. It helps rebuild strength that's been lost through aging, to help ensure a higher level of function. All the exercises must be taught while adhering strictly to the guidelines regarding specific movement. We address muscle groups that affect our ability to balance.

No Tunes—No Distractions There is no music used in this program because each movement must be consciously made with thought and awareness. The objective is defined motion and music can be a distraction. We make our own music with laughter, chitchat, and keeping count. This 45-minute program begins with stretches. Then we start the first of 12 to 14 different exercises. All of the exercises can be done from a chair or a wheelchair. We start out doing 10 repetitions then gradually move to 15 repetitions. Most of our class participants share similar physical

Personally I have found a new awareness of movement that has improved my balance. And it’s made a big difference in cleaning my glass shower doors. I have neuropathy in both legs, and in the past that’s caused me to be unsteady while bending down. Now I can perform the task with ease with no need to lean on anything for support. Sherry Ross, our volunteer extraordinaire, is so happy with feeling stronger and better overall. She has shared that her A1C number has dropped, too. Sherry credits not only Geri-Fit, but also Chair Yoga. What started out as a 12-week class back in July has blossomed into a group that enjoys each other's company while getting stronger with every movement. The Finest Quick Pineapple Fish By Joan Leotta

F

or a fish recipe that is simple to prepare, delicious, and that looks so pretty you can serve it to company, try Quick Pineapple Fish. It’s so good that both times I made it, I forgot to take a picture! Imagine three pieces of white fish—cod, halibut, or haddock are good choices—crowned with rings of pineapple, coming out of the oven, perfuming your kitchen with the aroma of lemon and ginger. Garnish each piece with a pinch of fresh Italian parsley when you serve.

Anti-inflammatory Ingredients The origin of this recipe is my daughter’s newest cookbook, The Anti-Inflammatory Diet and Action Plans, by Dorothy Calimiris and Sandra Bruner. This dynamic duo’s recipe called for coconut oil and other ingredients that I didn’t have, so I adapted it to ingredients that would offer similar reactions with the fish and that were more compatible with my Mediterranean tastes but with a slight Hawaiian flair (the pineapple).

Quick Pineapple Fish Serves 2 or 3 2 Tbsp. olive oil 1 lb. cod, halibut, or haddock fillet—no skin, cut into three pieces I 8-oz. can pineapple rings in their own juice 1 small piece of fresh ginger, grated ¼ cup fresh lemon juice Salt and pepper to taste 3 Tbsp. minced parsley leaves Preheat the oven to 400˚. Put the oil on the bottom of a baking dish with sides. Rinse and pat dry the fish, cut it into three pieces, and place in the pan. Pour the lemon juice over the fish. Grate ginger over the fish, trying to get some on each part of each fillet. Add salt and pepper to taste. Put the pineapple rings on the top of each fillet, 1 to 1 ½ on each. Pour 2 or 3 Tbsp. of the juice from the can into the baking dish. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the fish is white and flakey. Sprinkle parsley on top and serve.

I swapped out the swordfish in favor of less expensive, more readily -available halibut or cod. Both are excellent. I used fresh ginger, an item which seems pricey until you take the small piece you’ve broken off to the register and find it costs well under a dollar. Do go out and get a small can of pineapple rings in their own juice, a fresh lemon, that fresh ginger, and fresh flat Italian parsley. I hope you like it as much as we do—and any leftovers will keep well in the fridge in an airtight container for a tasty lunch the following day.

Rosemary in the Garden: Folklore and Uses By Pat Naughton

T

here’s a lot of folklore related to rosemary. The previous Latin name was Rosmarinus officinalis; officinalis indicates that is has some use, either medicinal or culinary. The genus name Rosmarinus derives from the Latin words ros and marinus which together translate to “dew of the sea.” In 2019, rosemary was determined to be part of the salvia family and was renamed Salvia rosmarinus, since Salvia officinalis was taken.

plant. It likes full sun in a hot dry climate and does not tolerant wet feet, which makes it easy to grow in the sandy soil of Brunswick County. When planting rosemary don’t add a lot of organic matter to the soil. Also keep organic matter away from the base of the plant. Organic matter can splash on the plant and harm it. Use stones or oyster shells, which will help increase the pH, as a mulch bed.

Rosemary is a garden plant with a rich history that flourishes in the sandy soils of Brunswick County.

Rosemary Lore In Christian folklore, it is believed the plant grows to full height in 33 years, representative of the life span of Jesus. The wild species has a blue flower; the legend is when Mary and Joseph were fleeing to Egypt, she laid her blue cloak on rosemary to dry and that is how it got blue flowers. Hence the name, Rose of Mary. In the Middle Ages people wore rosemary to protect them from plague. Ancient Greeks and Romans threw sprigs of it into graves to signify their desire to remember the departed. This plant was also used in Ancient Greece to strengthen memory, and students wore sprigs in their hair when they studied. It’s believed to ward off evil spirits and attract fairies. Protective mothers would hang it over a crib to keep fairies from stealing infants.

There’s an old saying, “Where Rosemary flourishes, the Woman rules.” A man who is indifferent to the fragrance of rosemary is unable to give true love to a woman, and those who smell rosemary frequently will retain their youth. It’s good luck to plant rosemary by the door (and it gives a nice fragrance when you run your hand through it as you pass by). You should never buy rosemary for yourself. The best luck comes when it is received as a gift.

Uses for Rosemary Around the garden it helps repel insects, especially bean beetles and moths. People hang it in closets to repel moths. When used as a hair rinse it may prevent dandruff, baldness, and even gray hair. To make a mouthwash, boil a pint of water, add 3 teaspoons dried rosemary, and steep for 30 minutes. Keep this in the fridge. Rosemary is a Mediterranean

Remove any dead leaves that fall. Rosemary does not need a lot of watering. Rosemary likes hot dry conditions and so do spider mites. They will appear as a bundle of dry grey leaves. The best remedy is to blast the plant with a strong garden hose from all sides. Rosemary can be used in cooking fresh or dried. The sprigs make great toothpicks for grilled pineapple or a caprese skewer with cherry tomato, basil, mozzarella, and balsamic vinegar. Rosemary is readily available at home centers and nurseries and is inexpensive. For good luck, ask your neighbor to pick up a plant for you. For more information about rosemary, search the NC plant toolbox for Salvia rosmarinus. For unscientific but interesting folklore, visit plant-lore.com or witchapedia.com. So Much More than She Bargained For By Beth A. Klahre

hen Patti Mitchell decided to volunteer at the Brunswick Center at Southport, she never expected other volunteers to become her best friends. Patti has been volunteering in the kitchen for the past three years, packaging the cold food components of the meals that are distributed daily through Meals on Wheels. She starts her day bright and early at 7:30 a.m. She’s there two or three days a week for at least an hour, but usually it’s more like two and a half hours until the work is done. Patti recalls seeing an ad in the State Port Pilot looking for volunteers for Meals on Wheels. The ad was looking for kitchen help versus drivers. “Without knowing exactly what was involved, I started helping with hot meals,” she says.

Southport: Slower Pace, Better Weather Patti and her husband Bucky moved to Southport six years ago. Born in California, she spent her adult life as a Jersey girl just outside of New York City close to Philadelphia. Southport was an escape to a slower, less inhabited place with better weather. She says, “We love the small town. I ride my bike to the waterfront and I walk to the senior center. It’s a really nice place to live. But the people! They are even nicer!” “The people I work with are special,” Patti says. “Our cook is Amber Ramsey. And Dean Francisco delivers the food that we package to Boiling Spring Lakes and Oak lsland. Noreene Duggan is a wonderful, really, really sweet person. We have become great friends. We do things together outside of the center at least once per week. Bev and Henry Bridgers are really, really down-to-earth people. You know what you are getting when you’re friends with them. Melissa Catlett has become a good friend! And the drivers are super nice people too,” she says.

A Feel-Good Kind of Thing Patti volunteers week after week. And not just because she enjoys her new friends. There is a higher purpose. “I know I am helping other people. I like what I’m doing. I don’t have to do any preplanning, just show up, get

assigned a task, and do it.” Retired after 32 years as a high school physical education and health teacher from Lenape Regional High School District in Medford, New Jersey, Patti says this job is no pressure. “It’s not like teaching where I was on stage five days a week. It’s easy, fun, and a feel-good kind of thing.”

A Loyal Volunteer Patti, who was also a volunteer at Southport Oak Island Animal Rescue, enjoys playing pickleball. “The center comes first. I’m loyal and if I say I’m going to be at the center, I’m there. Else, I play pickleball, weather permitting.” Through volunteering, Patti has discovered that there are more needy people in the area than she realized. “I am surprised at the number of people who qualify for meals in our little area. At one point we were sending out close to 100 meals every day.” When she’s not volunteering or playing pickleball, the Mitchells travel to New Jersey to dote on five grandkids, age seven and under.

Please take the time to stop at the front desk and enjoy the beauty of our orchid, named Melissa! This orchid was given to our Melissa last year, for accomplishing the massive project required to be named a Center of Excellence. She has bloomed again to remind us how fortunate we are! So many happy faces enjoying our 20th Anniversary and Rebranding Celebration!

Leave it to Cynthia Hamrick to get line dancing feet to join into the celebration!

Max and Paul just kept the music flowing throughout the building, making our anniversary such a happy one!

Absolutely the most precious valentines were made for our homebound family members! Thank you to Brunswick Community College Interagency Students KC Hastings and her sorority sisters , our very own volunteer Nancy McLaughlin, and Girl Scout Troop 2169.

We wish to send out a HUGE thank you to Girl Scout Troop 2169. These wonderful young ladies made valentine cards for our homebound family members!

We would also like to thank Mary Jane Ellis for donating wonderful Easter baskets, grass, and plastic eggs for filling. Thank to all of you that donated the sweet items that filled the eggs. The baskets went out to our homebound family. You made it possible for them to believe in the Easter Bunny again! Tish Hatem, President of the Southport Garden Club, surprised us with beautiful long-stemmed roses in vases to be given to our homebound family!

Coming Soon! After Taxes and Early Voting thru May 17 • Matter Balance

We wish to send out a special thank you to Arianna Blanck (a UNCW nursing student) for sharing her mindfulness and relaxation techniques!

SHIIP Volunteer Counselor Spotlight

E

verett Randall was born and raised in Mississippi where he earned his bachelor’s degree and an MBA in risk management and insurance from Georgia State University. Everett worked briefly in Atlanta before relocating to Pennsylvania where he took a position with an insurance education firm. He helped develop content and oversee examinations for people earning insurance designations. Everett retired from that company after more than 40 years.

April Is Alcohol Awareness Month Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in the United States. Alcohol addiction and excessive alcohol misuse affects people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities.

After retirement, Everett met with a SHIIP counselor (known as Apprise in Pennsylvania) for Medicare advice. He found the person so helpful that when he moved to North Carolina, he decided to become a SHIIP Volunteer Counselor. He joined the BSRI SHIIP team in 2019. Everett enjoys learning new things and helping others, so the SHIIP volunteer counseling role was a perfect fit. We’re happy to have Everett as part of our team! —René Tarquinio Lead Case Manager/SHIIP Coordinator

If you or someone you know and love is a Medicare beneficiary, help is available. Medicare covers an annual screening for all beneficiaries. For those that screen positive, Medicare covers up to four counseling interventions per year. For more information, call: René Tarquinio at 910-754-6224.

I’m Hooked! By Jan Morgan-Swegle

C

herished family traditions take many forms. Something in us wants to connect with our past and be part of the history that binds us together.

One of the more artistic ways to do this is rug hooking. While this medium is an art form today, it started out as a utilitarian function. Hooking rugs began in North America in Canadian maritime provinces and then in New England in the 1800s. Winters were cold and it was too expensive to have rugs shipped from Europe, so colonial women used heavy rags attached to burlap grain feed bags to cover their floors and keep their families comfortable. These floor coverings started to have patterns associated with the family who made them and some became wall decorations and pillows. These murals told stories of the family, farm life, or special occasions.

Modern-Day Hooking This is a relatively simple craft. You need a frame, a heavy backing, yarn and a pattern. The craft is done by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a woven base anchored to a wooden frame. The loops are pulled with a hooking tool that looks like a crochet needle. Rug hooking lives on to this day. “Hookers” Vicki Dangerfield, Melon Corsini, and Pam Manders meet at the Coastal Carolina Active Living Center in Supply. Vicki has been hooking rugs since 2002. Her mother taught her how to embroider when she was five and how to crochet when she was 14. “Back in the 1800s, if you needed something, you didn’t just run to the store and buy it. You had to make it yourself to meet the need,” Vicki says. “It’s a peaceful pastime. When I’m at home, I can watch TV or listen to music and work on my rugs.” Melon was taught by her grandmother, who made stair runners and other pieces. “Crafts like this used to be taught by the elder generation, who handed down the instruction,” she says. “I didn’t start hooking rugs until years after my grandmother died. I read that there was a rug hooking group at the Supply Senior Center and that’s when I really started to take up the craft.”

Robert Hunt, Coastal Carolina Ac ve Living Assistant Director at the Supply Center, admires Melon Corsini’s rug-hooking exper se. The group meets Thursday at 10 a.m. and invites others to join the fun.

Award-winning Work Pam Manders has been hooking rugs for about 15 years, completing more than 45 pieces. She has been part of the Supply Senior Center group for about three years. She enjoys the history associated with rug hooking. “Many years ago, in colder climates when flowers weren’t plentiful, women would hook rugs illustrating flowers in the design. These rugs would be used at wakes and funerals to cover the coffin in flowers,” Pam says. Pam is being featured in Rug Hooking Magazine’s “Celebration of Hand Hooked Rugs.” Every year, a panel selects 40 of the best rugs from hundreds of entries coming from Canada, Europe, and the U.S. This year, the finalists will be introduced at Rug Hooking Week in Archbold, Ohio, Aug. 15 to 20. Finalists are featured in the magazine with their rug and the story behind the design. This is Pam’s third time being recognized through the Celebration. The Supply rug hookers are looking for others to join them. Join the group on Thursdays starting at 10 a.m., and get hooked.
