World Health Day is April 7. This is a day to think about our overall health and well-being. Spring is perfect time to start thinking about our health and to get outside and get moving. We have been inside for a long time. It’s time to get out and enjoy some activities and restart our own personal wellness programs. Being well is not just being active and eating right. It is much more. It involves the whole body and mind. Everything we think do and act influences our wellness. Our centers have been closed now for over a year. We have missed seeing you and I know that you have missed each other. This past year was a stressful year for all. Let us start World Health Day as a new day for us to work on our well-being.

Calabash Thrift Store History Detectives Return Photo of Navy Veteran to Son By Mike McGurn Thrift Store Operations Manager

S

everal months ago, back in the fall, the Calabash Thrift Store received a donation that included a picture of a very young and handsome sailor in his Navy uniform. When thrift store employee Michelle Stewart saw the photo, she thought the sailor looked familiar. She looked on the back and saw a name and address that confirmed her suspicion. The sailor’s name was Irv Fenner, whom Michelle knew as Mr. Irv. He was the neighbor of her friend and Calabash Thrift Store volunteer Marianne Kubacki. Michelle had met Mr. Irv about four years earlier when her granddaughter used to walk his dog for him. She met him again a couple years later at physical therapy, and they had a nice conversation about their dogs and how much they loved taking them for walks. Michelle felt compelled to try to return the photo to Irv’s family. She called Marianne to find out what had become of Irv and found that he had gone to live with his son in South Carolina about a year earlier and had passed. Michelle searched on Facebook and Google and was able to find Irv’s obituary which said he was buried in Lexington, South

Carolina. A further search revealed there were two Paul Fenners living in Lexington—but which one was Mr. Irv’s son? Michelle contacted Marianne, who had been asking around the neighborhood for info. Luckily, Marianne found a lead and was able to come up with a phone number for Irv’s son, Paul. Michelle called him, introduced herself, and explained the situation. Paul was very grateful, thanked her for her efforts, and gave her his address so she could send him the photo.

Above: BSRI Volunteer Marianne Kubacki and BSRI Thri Store employee Michelle Stewart sleuthed away un l they found the proper home for the photo below. The photo is of former neighbor Irv Fenner, now deceased.

Great job by our resident Calabash Thrift Store History Dectectives Michelle and Marianne! Keep up the good work! You can be sure that there’s another mystery to solve right around the corner, and our volunteers and employees will work hard and enjoy the challenge of solving it.

Brunswick County Recovers from Tornado By Shelagh Clancy

O

n Feb. 16, an EF-3 tornado tore through Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach, killing three and leaving a trail of destruction for 22 miles. At least 60 homes were damaged, and some were reduced to rubble. Agencies and individuals from all over Brunswick County immediately jumped in to help. Jeff Gibby of Brunswick County VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters) coordinated volunteers. VOAD helps in disasters such as the tornado, helping residents connect to organizations and services that provide assistance.

VOAD received 100 requests for assistance and helped by cutting up trees with chain saws, clearing yard debris, covering damaged homes with tarps, and with critical home repairs. More than 300 volunteers came out to help clean up after the tornado.

BSRI Lead Case Manager/SHIIP Coordinator René Tarquinio helped out following the storm, providing information on resources.

Recovery Efforts from CRCI Brunswick Christian Recovery Center, Inc. (CRCI) has a landscaping crew, a catering crew, a maintenance and landscaping trade school, as well as a cleaning crew that serves all five BSRI senior centers. The landscaping crew cut downed trees and hauled debris to a dump site, while the catering crew provided three meals for three days to volunteers, homeowners, and other agencies involved. The crews worked in the damaged areas for two weeks. “It was a beautiful thing for our program participants to get a genuine picture of what it looked like to be a productive member of society. It took the disaster of a tornado, and turned it into an opportunity to allow men and women in recovery from substance abuse to get a genuine feeling of what it's like to make a difference,” said CRCI CEO Josh Torbich. BSRI Volunteers Honored with Governor’s Award By Beth A. Klahre

T

Each year the Office of the Governor of North Carolina recognizes the state’s most dedicated volunteers. Since 1979, the award has been bestowed on North Carolinians who have shown concern and compassion for their neighbors by volunteering in their local community. Only 10 volunteers nominated from each county can win the award. To qualify, nominees must engage in volunteer activities for a minimum of one year in North Carolina and benefit a community or communities in the state in a substantial, important, or unique way. Award selections are based on the nominee’s commitment of time, accomplishments, community impact, and enhancement of the lives of others. Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. is proud and grateful that our volunteers John Bodie, Eunice Diehl, and Sherry Ross have merited the Governor’s Award. These are their amazing volunteer stories.

his year, three Brunswick County residents from Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. have been recognized with a prestigious award: the Governor’s the Volunteer Service Award.

John Bodie was honored with the Governor’s the Volunteer Service Award for his faithful service at The Brunswick Center at Calabash.

He formerly volunteered in the kitchen at The Brunswick Center at Calabash five days a week, often arriving early and staying late. John took care of everyone around him, including fellow volunteers, center participants, and even the staff. John wants everyone to feel loved and appreciated and asks for nothing in return. Courtney Bledsoe, director at The Brunswick Center at Calabash, is very proud of John. "When considering nominees for the

Governor's Volunteer Award, John was one of the first volunteers that came to mind. Our staff and volunteers feel fortunate to serve alongside John and are so happy to see his efforts recognized in this special way. John would do anything for anyone and he does it with a smile on his face,” Bledsoe says.

Eunice Diehl Eunice has been a volunteer in Mooresville and Shallotte since 2007, and a faithful volunteer for the

past two years at The Brunswick Center at Shallotte. Eunice assists the case management team with data entry, disaster preparedness, and disaster recovery, and is a caregiver group facilitator. She also serves on the homedelivered meal program, congregate meal program, and senior center recreation, and assists the volunteer coordinator. Eunice is a rare jewel who serves the community by improving the well-being of the older adults in Brunswick County without expecting anything in return. Theresa Nelson, director at The Brunswick Center at Shallotte says, “Eunice is such a wonderful person. This award is very exciting for her!” Eunice was both surprised and honored when she learned of her award. “I volunteer because I want to be involved in the community. I always wanted to give back. I feel good about doing a good job and always feel respected and appreciated. Volunteering gives me purpose.”

Melissa Catlett, director at The Brunswick Center at Southport, says, “Sherry’s dedication and devotion to our center and the people who attend is incredible. Since the pandemic, she has been making masks for all of us. During the holidays, each of our Meals on Wheels participants received one of her masks. Sherry also made bears and bunnies for our homebound. We are beyond fortunate to have her in our Brunswick Center at Southport.” When Sherry is not volunteering, she loves spending time with her husband and her daughter and family who all live in Southport. Sherry frequently travels to Pennsylvania to spend time with her two sons and their families. Her grandchildren are the apple of her eye. Congratulations to all of our Brunswick County award winners! You are indeed very special people.

Eunice, who recently moved, wants everyone to know that serving at The Brunswick Center at Shallotte was “a truly great experience.” She will definitely be missed by all.

Sherry Ross Sherry is a dynamo at The Brunswick Center at Southport. She volunteers as front desk receptionist two days every week, teaches weekly quilting and sewing classes, and leads a volunteer group of crafters who make items to sell at the fall craft bazaar. Plant Native Groundcovers for Fire Safety By Pat Naughton

F

resh mulch looks great in a landscape. But it’s a lot of effort toting bags and spreading it, and woodchip mulch is flammable. Fire-wise communities discourage the use of mulch adjacent to homes.

will produce a carpet of flowers from April to May. To promote a second rebloom, shear the plant back after it blooms. It is semi-evergreen and may lose foliage in a harsh winter.

Use with Caution Creeping Liriope (Liriope spicata) is not native and is very invasive. If not contained it will spread into the adjacent lawn. To control the spread of this variety, surround the bed with edging that is 18 inches deep. A better variety is Liriope muscari, which does not spread. It forms clumps until well established several years after planting.

Groundcovers may be used instead, and they’re low maintenance and have low flammability. These native groundcovers are a good alternative to mulch.

Groundcovers for Sun Creeping juniper (Juniperus horizontalis) is quite common in this area. It does well in sandy soil. It is drought tolerant and relatively salt tolerant. It can grow to a height of 18 inches and 10 feet wide. This evergreen is a good groundcover for a slope or rock garden. Moss phlox (Phlox subulata) is moderately drought tolerant. It will grow to 6 inches tall. Moss phlox

prefers soil with little organic matter that drains well. This plant is typically propagated from seed indoors. After threat of frost has passed, it can be transplanted after three true leaves have developed.

Groundcovers for Shade Green and Gold (Chrysogonum virginianum) grows to a height of 2 inches and a width of 18 inches. It produces a carpet of yellow flowers that bloom from spring to summer. This plant is easily grown in average, medium-moisture, welldrained soils in part shade to full shade. This evergreen groundcover is well-suited for a woodland garden. Pussytoes (Antennaria plantaginifolia) does well in partial shade to full sun. It grows to 8 inches tall and 2 feet wide. The lush carpets of green leaves are followed by blooms of little “cat paw” flowers from March to May. Pussytoes

To see example of groundcovers, visit the Brunswick Botanical Garden behind the Brunswick County Cooperative Extension offices. More information on groundcovers can be found in the N.C. Extension publication Groundcovers Recommended for Coastal Southeast Landscapes. Photos are from the N.C. Extension Plant Toolbox.

L

unch at the Brunswick County Senior Resource Center at Calabash, was, before COVID-19, a time to nourish body and soul. In addition to enjoying a nutritious meal and the company of other seniors, these congregate mealtimes were a time for volunteers to enjoy company as well. Volunteer Tracey Nieman worked at the center before the pandemic closures and keeps working as a way to serve the community. “Before COVID-19, I was able to laugh and have great conversations with the congregate seniors, hearing all of their stories. I really loved the relationship I had with most of them because I lost my grandmother when I was 14 years old. She was my best friend.”

Ocean Isle Arrival Nieman moved to Ocean Isle Beach from Allentown, Pennsylvania in fall of 2018, and started volunteering that December. “I decided to volunteer because I love helping seniors out. When I lived in Pennsylvania, I had many years of working with seniors in an assisted living place. So after moving here, when I heard about this position, I was excited and happy that they had a position open for server and kitchen staff.” Eventually she was upped to volunteering three days a week. “I actually didn't prepare any meals as I am not the cook. I did, however, help with the Meals on Wheels, packing cold packs and getting the warm meals together in plates and in their

bags.” That experience packing meals became the focus of her work once COVID-19 closures began. Even though she misses talking with the seniors, she loves knowing that her work is serving them. “The best thing about volunteering at the center is meeting all of the awesome people, the other volunteers and the seniors. We volunteers work so well together as a team and have a blast doing it. I miss the seniors. But I know that one day we will get back to it.” Most of her work now involves a machine called an Oliver Tray that seals up the hot meals for delivery to seniors. “I have a fun time with that

one,” she says.

Out of Her Shell Neiman says that there has been another benefit to volunteering: The work she has done has transformed her as well, from a quiet shy person to someone who is more outgoing. “Through this program I have come out of my shell, and for that I cannot be grateful enough. I want to thank everyone who has given me a chance to show what I can do and help out. I am thankful for this awesome opportunity.” BSRI and we seniors who live in Brunswick County are grateful for you, Tracey Nieman!

The antioxidant has been linked to heart health including reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. Lycopene also supports vision and eye health and protects against certain eye conditions. Tomatoes are a good source of fiber and have high levels of vitamin C, potassium, and folate.

Grow your own tomatoes If you’re looking to grow your own tomatoes, now’s your chance! They typically need three months of warm summer weather to produce a great harvest so now’s the time to get planting. You can buy tomato seeds almost anywhere, or buy plants that are already started. Tomatoes need direct light and regular water to produce the best quality.

April Showers Bring a Perfect Time to Read By Donna Ruth Morgan

A

pril brings warmer weather to Brunswick County and we’re all happy to enjoy the fresh air. On a rainy day, peruse one of these interesting books.

This reviewer’s teenaged granddaughter and her circle avidly followed the fantasy series The Inheritance, so on their recommendations I tried Chris Paolini’s 2020 adult offering: To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. In a massive eight-hundred-plus-page science fiction saga, extra-terrestrial species, alien worlds, and imaginative biology and weaponry swirl around a “chosen one” female protagonist. Nutshell review: This epic tale requires a level of engagement that might discourage casual readers of the genre. The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery (2020) is an innovative view of the “seeds” (genetic materials that cause cancer) and the “soil” (human physiology) that enables them to grow. Jason Fung sees viewing cancer as an unbeatable foreign invader is a mistaken focus, which he challenges with proposals of changing cellular health. Nutshell review: Physician-author believes diet and lifestyle are the driving factors behind cancer and offers ways to take control of each. Ruth Ware uses a familiar formula in One by One (2020): a locked-room mystery in an isolated location, peopled with an interesting group of characters … and murder. A posh French Alps chalet becomes snowbound after an avalanche, trapping its privileged team-building clients in a web of tension and suspicions. An immersive setting and constantly-shifting plot will leave readers shivering. Nutshell review: Perfect for amateur sleuths who enjoy a chilling whodunit.

Greenlights (2020) is a look at fifty years of life challenges. Matthew McConaughey constantly keeps his eyes open for the next opportunity while navigating the highs and lows of a busy career in the public spotlight. He has a folksy, engaging writing style that helps overcome some red lights: self-centeredness, disjointed rambling, and too-careful political correctness. Nutshell review: Adolescent journal entries, bumper sticker slogans, and photographs enhance this uplifting memoir. The Unwilling (2021) is a horror story set in Vietnam-era North Carolina. John Hart’s coming-of-age family drama is thematically married to a horrific crime novel through an intricate exploration of brotherhood— virtuous and venal. The levels of violence and gore are a bit daunting but plenty of edge-of-the-seat action propels the thrilling narrative. Nutshell review: An award-winning master draws his audience into flawed, believable characters’ struggle between good and evil. Brunswick County Library branches have reopened with limited hours and services, and curbside pickup is available. Poetry Corner Everyday Heroes

150 Minutes per Week

Here's to the everyday heroes, The volunteers who do what they can, To ease the suffering of others, And be of service to their fellow man. May they know the true sa sfac on That comes from helping others Less fortunate than themselves, But no less their sisters and brothers. May they feel the gra tude in our hearts For all of the good that they've done. The apprecia on that we all feel for them Is truly second to none.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and

Preven on (CDC), you should get a minimum of 150 minutes of physical ac vity each week. That may seem like a daun ng number, but if you break it down, it comes out to an easy 30 minutes a day over 5 days each week. It’s important to stay ac ve, especially when a big chunk of your day may be spent si ng at a desk (or kitchen table…or couch…). Besides keeping fit, regular physical ac vity can benefit you in a bunch of ways, including:

improving brain health maintaining or losing weight strengthening muscles boos ng your immune system

Here are some easy ways to stay ac ve while staying home: 

   



Find a walking buddy to keep you accountable. It’s much easier to s ck to it if you’re not alone. If it’s raining, walk laps inside your house. Get connected in a Zoom exercise class. Turn up the music and dance in the living room. Unleash your inner green thumb and plant a garden. Whether you decide to plant flowers or food, tending to your garden takes a lot of physical effort. Make lunch me about more than just

food: Eat while standing or do some squats or lunges between bites. If you have stairs, do few sets of going up and down the stairs every few hours. Make a list of 10 small chores to do each day and do one each hour (wipe counters, wash windows, dust, vacuum, sweep, mop, etc.). Put things that you use regularly where you have to get up to get them. If you find yourself si ng at a computer for long periods of me, consider a stand‐up desk.

Principal Ward holding T-Rex

On Feb. 25, four staff members of the Southport Center went on a journey to the Boys and Girls Home of N.C. at Lake Waccamaw. The mission? To deliver an amazing Tyrannosaurus Rex, handcreated by William Knott, the son of Jackie Knott, Southport Assistant Director. William donated the T-Rex to the center, in hopes that the center would find a good home for it within a school setting. Jackie did some research and decided on the Thomas Academy–N.C. Charter School on the campus of the Boys and Girls Home. Participants of the Southport Center donated school supplies, clothing, paper products, personal hygiene needs, and much more. The students and Principal George Ward were excited about the donations and happy to learn about Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. We have more projects planned in the future with these amazing people! The van got a few stares on the highway with T-Rex peeping out the back window

Thank you to these amazing students for carrying in all of the donations.

Tabata and Geri-fit Tuesdays and Thursdays Tabata—11:15 a.m.—Noon Geri-fit —12:30—1:30 p.m. This will be the first time for these classes in a year! Angela will start with Tabata and then Geri-Fit. This activity helps rebuild strength that’s been lost through the aging process to help ensure a higher level of function as older adults continue to age. The Geri-Fit program requires a set of light dumbbell weights, a sturdy chair, a stretch band, and water to drink during the workout. In order to maintain safety and health, please bring your own weights for these classes.

CENTERS ARE CLOSED—See MEAL SCHEDULE notes below and on www.bsrinc.org
