Excellence! I will likely overuse that word for the rest of the month. It is with deep appreciation to all seniors, staff, volunteers, and board members that we proudly announce the certification of our three fullservice senior centers as SCOPE (Senior Center Operations and Program Evaluation) Certified. I can’t begin to describe the amount of work and innovation that went into the Senior Center Certification process, but as we collectively breathe a sigh of relief, I personally could not be more pleased. The goal of certification has a long history with the organization. When BSRI was formed in March 2002, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was drafted setting the terms of the relationship between the fledging nonprofit and the county. That MOU requested the organization pursue a course to achieve Centers of Excellence certification. As the corporation has grown and added required services over the years, BSRI has finally been able to reach those standards. With a perfect score achieved for all three centers, it was the exclamation point on a promise made long ago. May marks the unofficial start of summer for our area and already

activity has increased at our local venues. It’s an especially active month as many who endured the harsh winter in colder climates seek a reprieve from grey skies and lingering low temperatures. In our area, as Memorial Day approaches and temperatures rise, many will discover that they need help with climate control in their homes. BSRI can be of assistance and we are making preparations to have box fans available. May also represents the three-year anniversary of the opening of the Sunset Harbor Senior Site. The prequalification process for selecting an architect for the new Calabash Area Senior Center closed at the end of April. Several architects met criteria and the selection committee chose Sawyer and Associates to design the project. The new Calabash Senior Center is about 12,000 sq. ft. in size and is on nearly 5 acres of land in downtown Calabash. Its location will provide easy access to local amenities and businesses. The next step will be a series of approval meetings for building plans. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, businesses, and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Calabash Center. A fundraising committee is being formed to help raise the $100,000 necessary to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution or serve on the committee, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. BSRI is also seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to
assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Leland Center. The estimated total value of needed items and cash contributions are around $150,000. So far, $120,000 of the $150,000 has been raised. Please help us get over the finish line— no donation is too small! If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. The April 18 Brunswick County Commissioner meeting included an agenda item for donation of 3.5 acres of land by Bethel United Methodist Church in Bolivia. The goal of seniors in the Bolivia, Town Creek, and Winnabow areas is to have a future senior center built on the property. Members of those communities currently attend the Town Creek Park Community Building. Special thanks to those who kindly and consistently support this vision for their community. Congratulations to winners participating in Senior Games and Silver Arts. Competition will conclude on May 13 with a celebration and medals ceremony. Finalists will be eligible to compete on a state level in September. For more information, or to RSVP for the socials, please contact Khryste Haselden at (910) 253-2670. Thanks to all who make a difference each day!

When you donate to a charitable organization like Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI), how can you be sure it’s a worthy cause? One way is by checking with a charity validator, such as the Better Business Bureau, Wise Giving Alliance, Charity Navigator, GreatNonprofits, or GuideStar. Thanks to great work by BSRI staff, BSRI is now a Gold Star Charity Organization. You can learn more about BSRI’s GuideStar rating at http://www.guidestar.org/ profile/01-0656674. “The Guide Star rating is pretty much a requirement for all nonprofit organizations who desire to receive contributions through purchases on Amazon Smile and a few other vendor opportunities,” said Melody Stephens, BSRI’s Director of Operations. “The actual rating received is determined by how much information is provided regarding BSRI. It is one of the tools to encourage transparency and to afford donors another option in determining what agencies they feel are worthy of contributing to.
Big news at all three BSRI senior centers is certification as Senior Centers of Excellence. On the cover are staff and the site team from the Brunswick Center at Shallotte, including, at right, Director Anne Gass and Assistant Director Kathy Gelhart. See story on page 6.
“GuideStar is one of the systematic steps in aligning with donation opportunities, which in turn increases the possibility for fundraising,” Stephens said. According to America’s Charities (www.charities.org), “Easy access to information and growing demand for accountability, transparency and effectiveness impacts every aspect of a nonprofit organization. The more corporate, institutional and individual donors become empowered with data and information to make charitable decisions, the more they will exhibit higher expectations of nonprofit operations and performance.” GuideStar’s rating pages include considerable information to help donors make a decision. On BSRI’s GuideStar pages, you will find a summary of programs and results, information about organization financials, and a listing of staff, practices, and partners who make BSRI tick. Learn more about BSRI’s GuideStar rating at http:// www.guidestar.org/profile/010656674.

Senior Centers of Excellence
By Debra Marlowe, Organizational Development Coordinator and Susan Whitley, Director, The Brunswick Center at Southport
A
ll three Brunswick County Senior Centers took top honors in March when they were certified “Senior Centers of Excellence” by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) strives to offer all the best practices to seniors, and North Carolina has set standards for us to use as our guideline. An uncertified senior center must meet all state and
federal standards. A Certified Senior Center of Merit is the next step, meeting a few additional requirements. Senior Center of Excellence is the highest award, and all three of our centers met these high standards.
Certification strengthens the capacity of senior centers by providing measurable indicators of quality. The process documents practices at each center, and a site team from DHHS visits. The team is given a tour of the facility and a large file

box filled with documentation of best practices in five major operational areas: outreach and access to services, programs and activities; planning, evaluation, and input from older adults; staffing; operations; and physical plant. The team reviews the documentation and gives recommendations and suggestions to be addressed at the next recertification. We are the first county in the state to have three centers that received no recommendations—quite an honor! Of the 163 senior centers in North Carolina, only 85 (including ours) are Centers of Excellence.
Leland Nutrition Manager Zach Canady and Leland Center director Sandra Brooks celebrate the successful certification.
Senior Centers of Excellence This come with a financial reward: Centers of Excellence receive additional funding above centers that are uncertified.
Preparation for certification was a year-long process, said Yvette Gosline, Vice President of Programs and Services. “By believing in our mission and expanding our vision, we were able to focus on the primary goal: to have each Brunswick County senior center obtain N.C. Certified Senior Center of Excellence status,” Gosline said. “This designation has been a long time coming for the Brunswick Centers at Southport, Shallotte, and Leland. I'm so happy, excited, and honored to be part of the team that was able to see this project to its fruition.” BSRI President Jim Fish, Vice President Gosline, and the entire BSRI staff worked as a team during the yearlong preparation process. The senior center directors and assistant directors worked especially hard to achieve this difficult goal. The photos on these pages show these directors and the site team that certified each center. The certification will last for 5 years. Then all three centers will have a 5-year recertification process.

Volunteers
Volunteer Needs This Month Meals On Wheels Drivers– Shallotte, Calabash, Leland and Southport can always use sub drivers, especially in the spring and summer. SHIIP– Senior Health Insurance Information Program Volunteers are needed to counsel Medicare patients and assist on administrative tasks as well. Meal ServersVolunteers needed in Shallotte to serve lunch. This is an excellent way to interact with our participants! Front Desk– Volunteers needed for Front desk in Shallotte and Southport.
If they can, you can! Friday, April 1, Joel Johnson brought the Upward Stars Cape Fear travel basketball program to volunteer at the Shallotte Senior Center. Young men ages 10 to 13 volunteered their time to tidy up the Shallotte Senior Center and make it nice for the participants. Making a big difference can come in a small package sometimes. BSRI is a supporter of intergenerational activities. These young men only volunteered a couple hours, but afterward the building was looking and smelling great! We appreciate all helping hands no matter how big or small. -Sarah Powell
Older Americans Month
O
lder adults are a growing and increasingly vital part of our country. The contributions they make to our communities are varied, deeply rooted, and include influential roles in the nation’s economy, politics, and the arts. From 69-year-old NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, Jr. to 84-yearold actress Rita Moreno to 83-yearold Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who took her seat as a Supreme Court Justice at age 60, older adults are blazing trails in all aspects of American life.
Older Americans Month (OAM) offers the opportunity to learn about, support, and celebrate older citizens. This year’s theme, “Blaze a Trail,” emphasizes the ways older adults are reinventing themselves through new work and new passions, engaging their communities, and blazing a trail of positive impact on the lives of people of all ages. While BSRI provides services to older adults year-round, this month we will focus on how older adults in our community are leading and inspiring others, how we can support and learn from them, and how we might follow their examples to blaze trails of our own. We encourage you to get involved by sharing your stories or attending our OAM celebration. The Brunswick Centers at Leland, Shallotte, and Southport invite you to a “Blaze a Trail” cookout, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, May 9, at the Ocean Isle Beach Pavilion, 44 W.
First St. Transportation from the centers will be provided as needed. The cookout will be held rain or shine, and it’s free. We’ll serve hot dogs, chips, beverages, and dessert, play some great music, and set up games such as Corn Hole and Beach Bocce. You can take a stroll on the Ocean Isle Beach trail. Or just relax, listen to music, socialize with friends old and new, and enjoy being an awesome senior trail blazer!

SHIIP Monthly News
SHIIP Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program
Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model (CJR) On April 1, 2016, Medicare launched the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model (CJR). This is an important step in transforming the care delivered by Medicare. The most common procedures that Medicare beneficiaries have are hip and knee replacement services. Despite the high number of these procedures performed each year on Medicare beneficiaries, the quality and cost of care vary greatly among providers. The rate of complications such as infections and implant failures can be more than three times higher for procedures performed at some hospitals than at others. The average cost paid by Medicare for the surgery, hospitalization, and recovery ranges from $16,500 to $33,000 across geographic areas. This is due largely to the coordination of the entire episode of care that are often not strong enough and result in more
complications, hospital readmissions, and rehabilitative costs. The CJR Model addresses low quality and high costs that come from fragmentation by promoting coordinated, patient-centered care. The model aims to improve the care experience of Medicare beneficiaries who receive joint replacements and make it a top priority for the health care system. Under this model, the hospital where the hip or knee replacement and/or other major leg procedure takes place will be accountable for the costs and quality of related care from the time of surgery through 90 days after discharge. This will be referred to as an “episode” of care. Depending on the hospital’s quality and cost performance during the episode, they will either earn financial reward beginning with the second performance year; or they will be required to repay Medicare for a portion of the spending above an established target. You CAN prevent falls and overcome the fear of falling! The National Council on Aging program “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls” offers classes that will teach you how. The first class begins Tuesday, May 3, 8:30am, and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday at the same time. Last class will be Thursday, May 26. (The class consists of eight sessions, two per week, for four weeks.) Preregistration is required. The class is a structured group setting that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. May is Older Americans Month in which the US acknowledges the contributions of older adults to the nation. This year’s theme is:
Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Got Mosquitoes? Brunswick County Mosquito Control will be here Friday, May 20, at 11am to give a presentation about mosquitoes and steps to prevent them within your community. Did you know that Brunswick County conducts a year-round, county-wide mosquito surveillance program? The program takes steps to manage mosquito populations, identifies breeding habitats, and record seasonal distribution of mosquito species throughout the county. Mosquito biology and prevention will be discussed as well as an update on the Zika virus. The presentation will be followed by a short question and answer period. We look forward to seeing you. Note to Beekeepers: If you haven’t already, please contact Brunswick County Mosquito Control at 910-253-2507 about registering all your hive location(s) as a “nospray” zone. They’ll “bee” happy to answer questions.
This is an opportunity to raise awareness about important issues facing older adults and highlighting the ways that older Americans are advocating for themselves, their peers, and their communities. Be a trailblazer! Join us in promoting activities, inclusion, and wellness for older Americans in your community. For more information on Older Americans Month, go to www.oam.acl.gov. Tidbit: 2015 was the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act (OAA) which supports a range of home and community-based services, such as meals-on-wheels and other nutrition programs, in-home services, transportation, legal services, elder abuse prevention and caregivers support.

All donations go directly to support senior programs at our center. We appreciate it very much. Celebrate Birthdays — Join us on the last Friday of every month for singing and cake. This month’s date is the 27th. Fun is mandatory. Party hat and dancing is optional. Cinco de Mayo Party — Thursday, May 5. Cinco de Mayo (translated “the 5th of May”) commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. However, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. Please join us! While we won’t have a mariachi band, we can make our own music and have some fun!
Memorial Day Celebration — While Memorial Day is officially observed this year on Monday, May 30, we’re celebrating at the center on Friday, May 27. We hope you can drop by. If not, please pause for a moment to give thanks for those brave men and women who died in active military service so we could live free. As the poignant saying goes, “All Gave Some. Some Gave All.” Also remember the families of the fallen who live with the impact of lost loved ones every day. Please don’t forget to fly the American Flag in tribute, too. Here’s how “Old Glory” should be displayed: the flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon only, then raised briskly to the top of the staff until sunset, in honor of the nation's battle heroes. Meet writer, poet, and patron Margarete O’Leary who enjoys writing poems, short stories, articles, and her own blog. As for poems, she mainly pens traditional Japanese poetry known as Haiku (hi-koo). Haiku consist of only 17 syllables broken into 3 lines of 5/7/5. While haiku traditionally includes a seasonal reference, “modern” haiku does not necessarily adhere to that guideline. Margarete practices Tai Chi at the center and says it helps keep her creativity flowing (as well as keeping her fit). She is also the BSRI volunteer who takes our photographs and writes the articles for our center’s portion of the monthly Senior Buzz Magazine. Please enjoy her poems.
Holiday treats—Yum! One by one I eat them all Dang useless zipper! Warm breezes at dusk Look! Brown Bat acrobatics Good bye mosquitoes! Glass of old champagne Tiny bubbles hardly rise Same with my old bones Gone now only weeks Was he really even here? Life’s witness soon fades She talks in circles Age has muddied her clear mind Patience. I am next.
Seniors, we want your poems! Please email your original work to us at agass@bsrinc.org. We’ll publish it in the Senior Buzz and post it on our “Poets Corner” board here at the center for everyone to enjoy.
