How encouraging it has been that warmer weather is upon us and we transition from winter to spring. It is always wonderful to see the changing of the seasons as one season seems to linger a bit too long and the other arrives just in time. The wetter weather we experienced over the fall and winter appears to have served as added motivation to be outside and enjoy the longer days and brighter skies. Time to shed the winter coat, breath fresh air, and forget that cabin fever was ever a part of our life. I want to take a moment to thank the communities of Carolina Shores and Sunset Beach for the way I was welcomed to present information on the new senior center to be located on Beach Drive in Calabash. Many seniors from those areas came to listen to updates, ask questions, and provide important feedback. Because BSRI serves more than 1,200 people in the southern region of the county, we are genuinely interested in suggestions for programs and activities that will be part of the 12,000-square-foot structure on 4.7 acres of land. We welcome any ideas. April is marks the anniversary of the Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. newsletter. The newsletter is celebrating its fourth full year of

publication and as with many parts of the organization, it experienced significant growth over a short period of time. The first edition featured 12 pages and provided mostly menu and activity calendars. Four years later, the newsletter has 32 pages and includes sponsors, community outreach opportunities, information on needed services, senior spotlights, and BSRI organizational updates. Our newsletters also features color pages and an expanding scope of information. If you have information that you FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4

News & Announcements Tax season will conclude this month and BSRI is hosting tax professionals to assist individuals with filing their taxes. This assistance is free to seniors and available at the Brunswick Centers at Shallotte, Southport, and Leland. Opening ceremonies begin on April 6 at Town Creek Park and will conclude on May 13 with a celebration social and medals ceremony in Bolivia. Finalists may compete on a state level in September. Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. recently underwent its annual “Monitor from the Wilmington Area Agency on Aging or AAA. The Area Agency on Aging is responsible for conducting periodic and annual reviews on major programs and services offered by BSRI and by providers in Columbus, Pender, and New Hanover Counties. Our AAA does far more than just monitor programs and services; they advocate and support senior-related

needs and causes in an effort to improve the quality of life for our local aging populations. Our local AAA also provides us with an unwavering amount of support and we are very fortunate to have the help of such a dedicated organization. The Monitor process lasts about a week and accounts for every program and service. The focus of this year’s Monitor was the transportation and family care giver programs. I am pleased to say that BSRI passed its annual monitors with flying colors. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Leland Center. If you would like to make a contribution toward the new center, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. BSRI is also seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Calabash area center. A fundraising committee is being formed to help raise the $100,000 that will be necessary to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution or have interest serving on the committee, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. Thanks to all who make a difference each day!

Your Devoted Servant, Jim

BSRI News The North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature (STHL) was created by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1993. The STHL was established to: 

Provide information to senior citizens on the legislative process and matters being considered by the General Assembly.

BSRI President and CEO Jim Fish was recognized in February with the Professional Excellence Award.

Promote citizen involvement and advocacy concerning aging issues before the General Assembly. Assess the legislative needs of older citizens by convening a forum modeled after the General Assembly.

There is one delegate to the Senior Tar Heel Legislature from each of the 100 counties in the state. Most counties also have an alternate delegate. Delegates must be age 60 or older. The Brunswick County Delegate is Brian Flanagan and Audie Lowrimore is our alternate delegate. Flanagan is also Speaker Pro Tempore of the STHL, a position just under the Speaker, Dr. Althea Taylor-Jones of Forsyth County.

Our cover photo is by Joe Hamel of the Coastal Carolina Camera Club. Hamel and his wife Nancy live in Carolina Shores, where they enjoy observing and photographing the many varieties and quantity of backyard and shore birds here in Brunswick County. This pelican photo was taken in February 2015 at Sunset Beach.

BSRI CEO Honored

Audie Lowrimore and Brian Flanagan

Our delegates give presentations to local groups and organizations throughout Brunswick county to help inform older citizens on matters before the General Assembly and to hear from people about their needs. If you or your organization would like to schedule a presentation with our local STHL delegates, please contact Yvette Gosline at (910) 754-2300 for further information.

Congratulations to Jim Fish, President and CEO of Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI), who received special recognition at the Cape Fear Council of Governments Annual Banquet Feb. 23. Jane Jones, Director of the Area Agency on Aging, presented Fish with the Professional Excellence Award. The award recognizes a public servant in the field of aging who demonstrates commitment, vision, and leadership to address the needs of older people currently and in the future. Since joining BSRI in January 2012, Fish has continued to demonstrate professional excellence through his leadership and service to BSRI and the senior population it serves. Fish serves on boards and committees in Brunswick County communities, is active with community activities and sports, and has received many awards, including the prestigious Jefferson Award and Eagle Scout Award. Volunteers

Volunteers’ Night Out

Volunteer Louise Harrison, right, with BSRI Volunteer Coordinator Sarah Powell

Louise Harrison, above, is a fantastic volunteer in Leland. She is always willing to help out with whatever needs to get done. Louise does anything from leading activities to serving lunch, cleaning up, and taking out the trash. She is never too busy to help out when one of the staff needs assistance. I have never met anyone who is so uplifting and happy every day. She truly exemplifies our mission statement. BSRI is lucky to have Louise as a volunteer. She is encouraging to the seniors here in Leland, and to me as well. BSRI volunteers are priceless and make my job one that I look forward to coming to every day. It’s incredible the stories that I get to hear and the people I get to meet. I have the privilege of working with the people in our communities who want to volunteer their time selflessly to make a difference. BSRI wouldn’t be able to touch so many in our community if it weren’t for the time and efforts of our dedicated volunteers.

Birthday

By Ashley Cutrell Margaret Johnson White was born April 30, 1916 in Wilmington, North Carolina. She is respectfully known as “Miss Margaret.” To celebrate White’s 100th birthday, her daughter, Ida Dixon, shared her story and pictures with us. Shortly after White was born, she moved to Navassa where she currently resides. In her younger years, she worked at a local familyowned restaurant. White met her husband, Boston White, on the railroad. They were happily married for more than 65 years and had six children. Their children were William, Layton, Luci, Ida, Gregglin, and Leonard.

Margaret Johnson White, in her 20s, poses on a sunny day.

White took pride in being a mother. Some of their favorite family memories were just sitting around the table and chatting. “My mom is a history book and has many stories, and was all around an amazing mother,” Dixon says. White also enjoyed baseball games, fishing, sewing, and her church community. She is a member of Davis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. She was once the secretary of the church, president of the usher board, and sang in the church choir. Now, White is the oldest member in the church and of her community. Making Fitness Fun in Calabash By Linda Walters Members at the Calabash Senior Site agree: Joanne Messerlie is one of the best fitness instructors around. Messerlie has the chops for the job. A Certified Fitness Instructor, she retired from a successful corporate career in New Jersey. She then accepted a part-time position as a fitness center manager.

All levels are welcome, even if you have never exercised before. “Not only do you work your muscles, but we learn to stretch, work eye-hand coordination, and get that cardio in to get the blood flowing,” Messerlie said. Class member Lucy Pepler has been attending the Calabash Senior Site since it opened twelve years ago.

Anniversary

Happy Birthday, Buzz! By Kathleen Boyle

I

t has been four years since the creation of the newsletter that has become our current Brunswick Senior Buzz. The newsletter provides information about Brunswick County senior centers, staff, and members. “The Buzz was started by the Director of Senior Center Operations [Donna Mashburn], as a means for BSRI to better communicate with participants and community. Back then it was just called the BSRI Newsletter,” said Susan Whitley, Director of The Brunswick Center at Southport. The first newsletter was 12 pages and provided a menu and activity calendars. Whitley worked to create a “magazine of consequence,” she said. In 2014, Oak Island resident J.C. Angier came on board to help. “He really made the Buzz what it is today, and taught me about publishing,” Whitley said. “With his help, we changed the name, size of the publication, changed the amount of color, added new columns, added more interest stories, and even made the publication more reader-friendly. It really took the publication from a newsletter to a magazine.” Angier, who had been in the publishing business for more than 45 years, described his vision for the Buzz. “I gave Susan Whitley some ideas about it and suggested that it needed a name…. In addition to design and formatting changes, including the use of color on more pages, we made it a smaller page size. It is now stapled and is printed on a higher grade of newsprint,” Angier said. The changes served the magazine well. Angier handed the torch of editor to Shelagh Clancy in fall 2015, and it now has full color, 32 pages, and a lot of excitement for the future. “I get the feeling we have only just begun,” said BSRI President and CEO Jim Fish. This is your Brunswick Senior Buzz! Let us know what you like and don’t like, and share your ideas with us at newsletters.bsri@gmail.com or (910) 622-1036. Or come meet the Buzz editor and volunteers at Volunteers’ Night Out on April 5 (see page 8 for details).

The National Council on Aging program “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls” will be offered at our center in May. The class is eight sessions, two per week, for four weeks. The class is a structured group setting that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. Preregistration is required. Learn more at www.ncoa.org/healthy-aging, select “Falls Prevention.” Senior Games — Friday, April 15, 9am. Rack „em up at the Shallotte Center. We‟re hosting the qualifying rounds for those seniors who registered for the billiards competition. Welcome and good luck!

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

Quilt Raffle — In June, the Shallotte Senior Center Quilters will be raffling off this beautiful, queen-size handcrafted quilt. Tickets will be $1 each and all proceeds support our senior activities. Don‟t need a quilt? It would also make a great gift!

Date Correction — Senior Self-Defense Class The last class for the Brunswick County Sheriff‟s Dept. self-defense class for seniors is May 20—not May 13 as previously reported. Classes are now in progress and open to both men and women. Questions? Call us at 910-7542300 x1001.

2016 National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 10-16. To honor our dedicated volunteers, BSRI invites all volunteers to drop by the Shallotte Senior Center on Friday, April 15, from 5-7pm and enjoy offerings by local vendors, chair massages, hors d‟oeuvres and music by “The Lucky Girls,” a bluegrass/country band. There will also be an optional tasting of local wine, beer and coffee. We hope you can join us for this exciting event—you may even win a door prize! 2015 Volunteering facts: 62.8 million people volunteered 7.9 billion hours for a total of $184 billion dollars in value (source: volunteeringinamerica.gov). Estimated value per hour: $23.07 (source: independentsector.org) Comfort Keepers Presentation — Monday, April 4, 11am. Client Care Coordinator (and nurse) Angie Boyarsky will speak about available in-home care services to seniors and other adults. No registration required. For more information, visit them online at comfortkeepers.com.

All donations go directly to support senior programs at our Center. Thank you. Celebrate Birthdays — Join us on the last Friday of every month for singing and cake. This month‟s date is the 29th. Fun is mandatory. Party hat is optional. Movie Day — Now showing on Tuesday, April 19, 1pm— “It‟s Complicated,” staring Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin. Admission, popcorn and candy are free! Meet Our Instructors — We’re proud of our excellent instructors and, beginning this month, we’re introducing each of them to you, in turn. We want you to feel comfortable in knowing you’re learning from the best! Get to know… Art Instructor Joan Hoyle. Joan has always loved to draw, but didn’t add color to her work until later. At age 16, she landed a position at the Rhode Island School of Design which helped launched her artful passion. She’s painted for over 50 years and taught for 25. Her first love is oil painting, but she also enjoys watercolor, pastels, and palette painting. She says painting with oil is forgiving, relaxing, and connects her to the Old Masters because they used oil paints. Portraits are her favorite subject and she always paints to music—Irish is her first choice. She says it helps with creativity and relaxation. She loves teaching because she’s able to see students fulfill untapped potential. Her advice to folks thinking about taking an art class is: “Just try it. You won’t know if you like it until you sit down with brush, pencils, paper and/or paint in hand. Don’t be intimidated by others’ works—everyone starts somewhere.” Joan hails from Rhode Island and is a member of the Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of America, and the local Waterway Art Association.

2016 Senior Games/ Silver Arts Competitions — April 6 to May 13. If you’re 50+, you’re eligible to participate in the Brunswick County Gator Games which consist of both athletic and art

events. For example, for the athletes, there is bowling, billiards, swimming, tennis, bocce, golf, football/softball throwing, running, walking, and cycling to name a few. If you’re more of an “art” person, there is weaving, needlework, Tole painting, woodworking, poetry, fictional short stories, essays, etc. For those who love performance arts, you’re covered with vocal, dance, instrumental and more. For a complete list of activities, pick up an application at the center. The deadline for registering was March 30. If you missed it, but still want to participate, call Brunswick County Parks and Recreation anyway at 910-253-2677 to ask if there may still be an opening. If not, mark your calendar to sign up next year, then come watch the competitions and cheer them on! Maybe some day they’ll include “spectator” as an event and we can all win at that!

Joan advises Karen about sketching whimsical animals.

Classes meet every Friday from 1-3pm, and are open to all skill levels and media. Come explore your artful creativity.

We’d like to send our heart-felt thanks to the Shallotte Moose Lodge for hosting the Spring Luncheon for Seniors in March. Everyone enjoyed it very much. We also want to express our sincere thanks to the Shallotte Sorority for their continuing support and monthly donation to our food pantry. Your efforts make a critical difference in many lives. Wilmington Shopping Trip — Wednesday, April 13. We’re headed “north” this month (well, at least as far as Wilmington’s Independence Mall). The bus will leave at 10am and return around 3:30pm. Call 910-754-2300 x1001 to sign up for a fun day of shopping and lunch. Remember: shopping can be hard on your feet. Wear your most comfortable shopping shoes so you don’t miss out on those bargains! Show Me the Money! BSRI Financial Statements and IRS Form 990 are available online at www.bsrinc.org.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game! Celebrate MLB opening day with us on Monday, April 4. There will be game-chat and stadium snacks. Meanwhile, test your MLB knowledge with these trivia questions: How many leagues in MLB? What makes a Designated Hitter position different? Who began the tradition of throwing out the first ceremonial pitch? What year? Which team holds the record number of championships? Which team is the oldest professional baseball team and when were they founded? How many stitches on each MLB ball? Distance from pitcher’s mound to home? Distance between each of the four bases? Name the parts of a baseball beginning with the outside.

Meet poet and patron Susan Bowling who frequents the Town Creek Senior Center. Susan shares her thoughts about what the senior center means to her. Thanks, Susan for your inspiring poem. Take Part by Susan Bowling

Food Safety For Older Adults

Sprouts: What You Should Know Like any fresh produce that is consumed raw or lightly cooked, sprouts that are served on salads, wraps, sandwiches, and in some Asian food may contain bacteria that can cause foodborne illness. But unlike other fresh produce, sprouts are grown from seeds and beans under warm and humid conditions. These conditions are also ideal for the growth of bacteria, including Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli.

onion, alfalfa, clover, radish, and mung bean sprouts). When eating out, you can ask that raw sprouts not be added to your food. If you purchase a sandwich or salad at a restaurant or delicatessen, check to make sure that raw sprouts have not been added.

If just a few harmful bacteria are present in or on the seed, the bacteria can grow to high levels during sprouting, even if you are growing your own sprouts under sanitary conditions at home.

What can consumers do to reduce the risk of illness if they want to eat sprouts?

Children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems (such as transplant patients and individuals with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and diabetes) should avoid eating raw or lightly cooked sprouts of any kind (including

 Wash sprouts thoroughly under running water before eating or cooking. Washing may reduce bacteria that may be present, but it will not eliminate it.

 Cook sprouts thoroughly. Cooking kills harmful bacteria and reduces the risk of illness.

Fraud Alert: Beware of Fake IRS Phone Calls Scammers posing as U.S. Treasury officials are calling North Carolinians and demanding that you pay taxes right away or face a lawsuit or arrest. Many of the reports to the N.C. Department of Justice come from eastern North Carolina. The calls often begin with a pre-recorded message that you’re asked to return. Sometimes the caller says there’s an issue with your pension, and other times he says an action has been filed against you by the U.S. Treasury. Anyone who calls to demand immediate payment for taxes is trying to rip you off. If you get a call like this, remember: 

Government agencies will not threaten arrest if you don’t pay taxes or fines immediately. Real

government employees will never demand immediate payment by credit card, bank account draft, pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. Caller ID can be manipulated to make it appear the scammers are calling from the real IRS or a local number, even if they’re located halfway around the world. Never share personal information such as your Social Security Number or bank account number with anyone you don’t know who contacts you, even if they claim to work with a government agency.

If you have been contacted by a phone scammer, report it to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or by filing a complaint online at ncdoj.gov.
