The most important thing we did in 2017 was stay true to our mission. My hope for 2018 is health and prosperity with a focus on the things that matter most!

BSRI News
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the SHIIP volunteers who gave their time and energy to assist Medicare beneficiaries during the very busy Open Enrollment season. Counseling was provided at all of BSRI’s senior centers: Shallotte, Supply, Southport, and Leland, with an average of 40 counseling sessions per day! Many thanks to our volunteers: Alan Morrissey, Ken McGill, Mary Fitzgerald, Kate Slavin, Jenna Fontaine, Eileen Scanlon, Judy LaRocca, Celeste Korpon, Alberta Shellem, Linda Rahilly, and Marcy Merkle. Also a big shout out to Karen Tierney, BSRI receptionist, and UNCW social work interns Alexis Robert and Susan Warren, who assisted with scheduling the appointments.

Audie Lowrimore, Brunswick County delegate to the Senior Tar Heel Legistalure (STHL), will speak on topics of concern to our seniors in January. Lowrimore will give an overview of the STHL and how it advocates for seniors in Brunswick County. Funding for senior centers has not met the needs of the increasing senior population. To stay in operation, senior centers depends on resources from federal, state, and local governments; special events; participant contributions; grants; and volunteer hours. The Senior Tar Heel Legislature calls for the increase of recurring funding for senior centers. Find out more about programs and funding at these important meetings Jan. 19 in Supply, Jan. 22 in Southport, and Jan. 26 in Shallotte.

VOLUNTEER 1st of the Year! What will you do to help your community?
Get your year off to a good start! | We will need administrative volunteers for special projects, events and fundraising. This volunteer opportunity will be for as needed assignments. We will be looking for someone with a business background.
Let’s Do Lunch! | We will also need plenty of Substitute Meals on Wheels drivers. This opportunity is perfect for you, if your schedule is flexible and you don’t want a once a week commitment. Our time frame for Meals on Wheels is 10 am—12 pm. If you are employed and would like to volunteer, try asking your employer if you can take your lunch hour to deliver meals. Most employers appreciate engagement in the community. We will be happy to work with your schedule as best we can.
Keep It Up! To all of our wonderful and dedicated volunteers, I want to thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. I am so amazed every day to see the kind and humble acts you do for others. Keep up the good work and thanks for a wonderful year! Let’s get ready to make a difference in 2018! -Sarah Powell Volunteer Coordinator

t’s an impressive view at Oliver’s on the Cape Fear, with tall ceilings adding elegance to the main seating area of the waterfront restaurant in Southport. Even more amazing was our chat with Executive Chef Dustin Garrett. Read about this restaurant with the breathtaking view and the innovative chef, then enjoy lunch or dinner at Oliver’s on the Cape Fear at 101 West Bay Street in Southport.

n April 6, 1928, an angel was born. On November 19, 2017, she was called home.
Mrs. Irene Barham Hankins was born to Nurney and Pearl Barham in Wilson County, North Carolina. After the death of her father when she was just 4 years old, she and her siblings went to live with her Uncle Battle and Aunt Viola Barham. During the Great Depression, Irene’s mother took a job in Washington, D.C., where Irene and her siblings spent several weeks during the summers. Education was a must in the Barham household; the children were never allowed to miss school to do farm work. Irene often shared that farm work was the best motivator she had to thrive in school and to attend college. She graduated from her beloved Shaw University in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and science. She also earned a Master of Arts degree in
guidance and counseling from Atlanta University in 1962. Her career in education began at Longwood School in Longwood in 1948. She was one of the first high school teachers for African American students in the western part of Brunswick County. She taught math and science. In 1951, she moved to the new Union School in Shallotte and met Jonathan Hankins, the principal. They were married in 1952 and went on to change the lives of thousands of children. Irene had a special ability to help each student discover their own natural talents. Her legacy to
Irene retired from the school system in 1985 after 35 years of service, but she never retired from impacting people and the community around her. She was the grand matriarch of the Brunswick Center at Southport and loved by all. She served on the BSRI board and the Home and Community Care Block Grant committee. Irene’s 90th birthday would have been April 6, 2018. She was so looking forward to her birthday party, and it is with fond remembrance that The Brunswick Center at Southport will host a 90th memorial birthday party that day. Everyone is encouraged to come and celebrate this amazing woman who contributed so much to the BSRI family. Please wear a hat and her favorite color, pink. Irene is sure to be there, as her spirit will always be near and dear to our hearts.

Most people don't pay a monthly premium for Part A (sometimes called “premium-free Part A”). If you paid Medicare taxes for less than 30 quarters, the standard Part A premium is $422 in 2018. If you paid Medicare taxes for 30-39 quarters, the standard Part A premium is $232 in 2018.
$1,340 deductible for each benefit period
Days 1-60: $0 coinsurance for each benefit period
Days 61-90: $335 coinsurance per day of each benefit period
Days 91 and beyond: $670 coinsurance per each "lifetime reserve day" after day 90 for each benefit period (up to 60 days over your lifetime)
Beyond lifetime reserve days: all costs
The standard Part B premium amount is $134 (or higher depending on your income). However, some people who get Social Security benefits will pay less than this amount ($130 on average in 2018).
$183 per year after your deductible is met, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for most doctor services (including most doctor services while you're a hospital inpatient), outpatient therapy, and durable medical equipment.

5 IMPORTANT REASONS TO JOIN GERI-FIT ®
Geri-Fit is a Tier III (highest level) evidencebased health promotion program for older adults that helps to rebuild strength that may have been lost through the aging process. Geri-Fit is a selfpaced support program that can be an ideal part of managing chronic disease, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, behavioral health, obesity, and/or chronic pain. However, any older adult, regardless of their age or fitness level, can participate.

Are you a Quilter? Get your quilt on with The Quilting Bee Every 1st & 3rd Tuesday 12p-3p. All Quilters are welcome!!
In the Geri-Fit® program, participants are supplied light dumbbell weights, a chair, a stretch band, and should bring water to drink during the workout. Participants build strength and endurance using 2 or 3-pound dumbbells and typically progress to using heavier weights within a year. Geri-Fit participants can expect to learn stretching techniques, engage the cardiovascular system, increase range of motion, and enhance stability and balance, which are important for preventing falls. Medical journal, Clinical Interventions in Aging, reported in February 2017, that Geri-Fit participants ages 65 and older showed an 80.8% improvement in balance and stability within 90 days. Geri-Fit classes have been shown to improve functional capacity and can help maintain independence in activities of daily living such as carrying groceries, being able to get in and out of a car, standing up from a seated position, picking up objects, and walking up and down stairs.
Calling all Sweethearts!! The Leland Center would like to invite you to a Sweethearts Dance Friday, February 16th 5pm-7pm.

AARP will offer tax assistance again this year at Rourk Library on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays beginning Feb. 5th, 9am-1pm. We will offer transportation (if needed) every Tuesday beginning Feb. 6th. Sign up required. New Year’s Trivia: When was the “big ball” at Times Square dropped for the first time? (Answer: Midnight, Dec. 31, 1907!)
Senior Tar Heel Legislator Audie Lowrimore will speak on Jan. 26th, 11am. Light refreshments served. We are looking for a big turnout like last year! Please plan to attend this very important meeting. Funding for senior centers has not met the needs of the increasing aging baby boomer's generation who now constitute more than two-thirds of the 50 plus population. Senior Center General Purpose money is vital to support critical center operations. To maintain operation, senior centers must leverage resources from a variety of sources that include federal, state and local governments, special events, participant contributions, and grants and volunteer hours. The North Carolina Senior Center Alliance (NCSCA), Advocacy Committee is supporting the North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislatures' call for the increase of recurring funding for Senior Centers. Make your voice heard! Funding affects all seniors in all 163 senior centers in 96 counties in NC, including us! A special, heart-felt thank you to each one of you who helped fill a senior’s Christmas wish through our Senior Stockings Program. Your acts of kindness are appreciated more than you may realize. We’d also like to acknowledge St. Brendan’s RC Church and Shallotte Women’s Sorority for their generosity as well. Could you use a few more minutes in your day or some additional space in your home to work on your favorite hobby, have a quiet place to read, or just somewhere to escape from life’s roller-coaster for a while? If you answered “Yes,” to any of these questions, we have two words for you: Declutter & Donate! On Tues., 1/16, 11am, Volunteer, Organizer, and Craft Instructor Margarete O’Leary will share some simple “secrets” to corralling your clutter and taking back valuable space in your home and, more importantly, your precious time. We’ll have some fun, share some “clutter” stories, and, unlike some of those Christmas gifts you may have received, this will be something you can actually use. The next step? Donate those gently-used items to the Center for our indoor Yard Sale which will be Fri., Feb 30th. (Details in the Feb. Buzz.) Your items will get a second chance to make someone else happy and the proceeds will go directly to supporting our senior programs. Start 2018 with something you can actually accomplish and feel good about! Sign up now! Another session of Beginner Computer Class begins Fri., Jan. 5th, 10am. Six weeks; six classes. No fee, but sign up is required. Ongoing Events Weekly Update/ Sip ‘n Chat

The Secret Life of … Zach Canady. You know Zach as the Center’s mild-mannered, always smiley-faced Nutrition Coordinator who picks up the Center’s hot meals, serves them, washes the dishes, cleans the kitchen, packs the Meals on Wheels to go, does the requisite paperwork, and generally helps out wherever he’s needed. Whew! His passion? Helping and serving others. What you don’t know is, behind the hot meals and dishpan hands, Zach also has another passion—a calling—for preaching God’s word. At age 17, Zach felt the Lord called him and, while still in high school, he began leading prayer every school morning at West Brunswick. He was ordained as a minister on April 12, 2015, and founded Rehoboth Baptist Church about 6 months ago. The church is founded upon the belief that spiritual salvation is found through faith in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. The church has a choir and offers Bible study. Their outreach program meets once a month and provides free clothing and food for the needy. Services are held at the Shallotte Senior Center Sundays at 10:30am and Bible study is held Wednesday nights at 7pm. All are welcome to be part of this church family. Zach has been married a little over a year now to a wonderful lady named Tori. Both Zach and Tori are Brunswick County natives as are the many generations before them. Zach is an outdoor enthusiast—loves being in the woods, hiking, hunting, and fly-fishing in the mountains. If you want to know more about Rehoboth Baptist Church, call Zach at 910.368.6895; email him at rehobothbaptistchurch17@gmail.com or go to https://www.facebook.com/rehobothbaptistnc. Thank you, Zach, for all you do for the Senior Center and your Community. A hearty THANK YOU to members of the Fun Fatale Trio Band who performed at the Center’s Christmas Party on Dec. 8th! A variety of acoustic instruments accompanied melodic voices as band members sang favorite songs of the season. What a wonderful treat in addition to the great food catered by Jerome’s! The Fun Fatale Trio performs for community events and senior living centers. Reach them at funfataletrio @gmail.com or on Facebook. Happy Holidays, everyone!
Smart Caregiving—Tips for Seniors: (1)DIY Ice Pack: mix one part rubbing alcohol and 2-3 parts water in a plastic zip bag. Freeze. The pack will stay cooler longer and will mold to the body. (2)Use “glow tape” for safer walks in the house at night. Place around light switches, door handles, medicine chest doors, thermostats, refrigerator handles, exit doors, walker frames, and along walls where other lighting is insufficient to find your way.
