Happy 15th birthday, BSRI! A brief history of how we started: March 2001: A series of meetings put the finishing touches on a new direction for the aging Brunswick County population. The Department of Social Services and county commissioner action committee composed of county employees, county management, and concerned citizens had hired a new executive director to focus directly on the growing and vocal needs of Brunswick County seniors. A trend had begun with World War II generation seniors, now in their seventies and needing services, and a tidal wave of Baby Boomers on verge of exploding 10,000 people per day into retirement. Our warm weather, beaches, and low taxes guaranteed that this area would be a landing spot for people exiting New England and the Midwest. County projections showed that eventually, Brunswick County would be a senior community. A Visionary Plan: A new nonprofit was to be formed to create several advantages. Cost savings would come from moving some county employees into the new entity. Current senior sites would remain in county hands but have a shortened chain of command. Program upgrades would mean improved eligibility for Home and Community Care Block Grant funds and other grants.

Then there was fundraising. A bona fide 501(c)3 could be granted tax exempt status and make tax-deductible contributions to important programs like Meals on Wheels. It was official: In August 2002, Deputy County Manager Steve Stone signed the completed articles of incorporation paperwork for a new agency, and a vision transitioned into a fledgling corporation. Brunswick Tomorrow – Our County, Our Vision, Our Decision. A little over a year after the formation of the Brunswick County Council on Aging, Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. was born. Brunswick County Officials and Commissioners launched a series of public meetings to assess public sentiment for community priorities. Among those priorities was the goal: Provide for the well-being of our senior citizens by increasing their participation in current programs while developing adequate facilities and support for an independent lifestyle. At the time, BSRI managed locations in Shallotte, Southport, Leland, and Oak Island. In February 2004, the Brunswick County senior population numbered 19,200, roughly 25 percent of the county population. Today, Brunswick County’s senior population is nearly 50,000. deepest appreciation to Fran, the WECT team, the Leland Walmart, generous members of the community, and BSRI staff and volunteers who helped to procure and distribute these much-needed resources. County commissioners voted on June 17 to appropriate BSRI’s annual budget request. This year’s budget represents additional funding from previous levels and remains consistent with the commission’s desire to maintain a revenue neutral county budget. The additional funding provides resources to ensure the new senior centers in Leland and

Linda Walters took a summer drive to the docks in Varnamtown for this month’s story on Brunswick County shrimping. We’re sure she didn't mean to tease us by photographing a shrimp boat named “Oldie Goldie.” At the Buzz, we think North Carolina shrimp is one of the best things about living at the coast. Read more about local shrimp on page 8.

BSRI is seeking community support from area residents, businesses, and nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new Calabash area center. A goal of $100,000 has been set to meet that need. A sign has been placed on Beach Drive so the public can monitor fundraising progress. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 7542300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. Fall will be here soon!

It’s Our Birthday! BSRI Celebrates 15 Years By Melody Stephens, Director of Operations

B

runswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) was incorporated in 2002 when Brunswick County commissioners established BSRI as a nonprofit agency to provide senior adult services. The commissioners expected growth of the 60+ population and wanted to set up funding through grant awards, government support, and fundraising. In June 2003, BSRI took over program services from the Brunswick County Department of Social Services (DSS), Older Adults Division.

At that time, four locations (Ash, Leland, Shallotte and Southport) were housed in older buildings managed by local government departments. Now administrative offices were established in the DSS building in Bolivia. James “Jim” Russell served as the first BSRI executive director under a newly named board of directors. County Commissioner May Moore served as temporary chair until Shirley Kotlarz was elected in 2003. The board worked on budget strategies and policy with an eye toward providing the aging population with basic needs. By the end of the first fiscal year, Russell was named President/CEO and a few new hires were added. Early on, Jim Russell and the board sought add more space and

additional locations. By 2006, BSRI and Brunswick County’s plan was to eventually offer five large senior centers in communities across the county. Meanwhile, BSRI expanded services, adding nutrition sites in Calabash, Northwest, Oak Island, and Boiling Spring Lakes. Later, BSRI added programs and services in Supply, Sunset Harbor, and Town Creek.

When the economy made a downturn in 2009, all planned centers were placed on hold, with the exception of the Southport facility which was already under

contract for renovations. The Ash and Calabash sites suffered reduction of services and the Northwest location was closed. The remaining nutrition sites remained open on a part-time basis. As the economy rebounded, BSRI leadership has changed, staff has been added, and the senior adult population continues to swell. Thanks to the perseverance of dedicated staff and volunteers, the efforts of the current CEO, Jim Fish, and the direction of the board, BSRI now manages four large senior centers. Three centers were named Senior Centers of Excellence. We

Happy Anniversary, BSRI! are on schedule to add a fifth senior center by 2018. BSRI continues to maintain senior sites in Ash, Calabash, and Town Creek and supports the meal program in Boiling Spring Lakes and Oak Island. In 2015, the Thrift Store in Calabash began generating income support for BSRI programs.

BSRI has progressed a long way since 2002. The past 15 years have proven the initial vision was realistic and attainable. There is more to be done. But let’s take a moment to recognize what determination, collaboration, commitment and community support can accomplish. BSRI’s mission endures and those of us who have witnessed the progress from the early days have much pride in what has transpired. It has been a very rewarding journey—one we will maintain as we continue moving forward together.

Out and About

Photos by Linda Walters

By Linda Walters Brunswick County is a shrimp lover's paradise with a summer bounty of fresh, wild caught, local shrimp. And on the Lockwood Folly River at the very end of Varnamtown Road, you’ll find Garland's Fresh Seafood, Inc., one of the oldest shrimp suppliers in Brunswick County.

Wesley Garland “Honey” Varnam founded Garland's Seafood in 1954. His youngest son, Nicky, grew up with the business and became a shrimp boat captain. Nicky owned his first shrimp boat (built locally) when he was 20 years old. He went to Key West for a while, then came home and married Jackie, a real estate agent. When his dad died in 1984, Nicky and Jackie took over the business and changed

the name to Garland's Fresh Seafood, Inc. Nicky manages the operational side of the business, unloading boats, sizing, pricing, and packing the shrimp. Jackie manages the administrative side: sales, scheduling of pickup, and delivery. Shrimp is the only seafood sold, both wholesale and retail. Customers must place an order with Jackie before receiving the shrimp.

The life of a sea captain has many rewards, but with it comes responsibility, danger, and hard work. The day starts at 2 a.m. and continues until 9 p.m., maybe later. The captain of the boat on our cover is Arthur Thompson, 84 years old and still going strong. He and a single crew member crew the

Out and About Oldie Goldie on its shrimp runs. On a typical shrimping run, the day begins by loading 20 blocks of ice weighing 300 pounds each onto the boat, along with $100 worth of groceries. Six to eight hundred gallons of fuel is needed to supply a boat, depending on the size. Crews stay out to sea for four days. The crew lowers the outriggers to stabilize the boat and keep each side of the nets as far away from each other as possible. The nets are unhooked, unfolded, and thrown overboard. When the nets are full, they are loaded on the boat and emptied. Once home, the shrimp must be off loaded, weighed, headed, and cleaned. Shrimp is then packed in 50pound boxes and stored in the

cooler. Next comes the cleaning of the boat and the storage of the nets. When the operational side is completed, the administrative side begins. Customer orders must be filled, and scheduled for pick up or delivery. Ninety-nine percent of Garland's Fresh Seafood, Inc. business is commercial.

Danger is always a possibility on a shrimp boat. “A shrimp boat captain must use his knowledge and common sense to keep his crew safe,” Nicky said. “If the weather is bad, stay in port

until it passes.” Safety is a must. Life buoys, distress signals, navigational lights, and emergency phone must be inspected and maintained. “My worst fear as a sea captain happened when a crew member fell overboard into shark infested water,” Nicky said. “It was also distressing when another crew member caught his hand in a winch.”

Many changes face the shrimping industry. Locally, shrimp is no longer as plentiful, and much shrimping has moved to Pamlico Sound. In February of this year, the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission voted to accept a petition from the N.C. Wildlife Federation to limit trawling in sounds and estuaries. Increased demand for waterfront homes and businesses have raised the cost of land used as ports. Fuel prices are unstable. Shrimping is North Carolina’s heritage and Wesley Garland Varnam’s legacy to his family. Nicky and Jackie have three grandsons that will make their own career choices. There is much to consider when choosing to captain a shrimp boat or own a shrimp business.

All About Antioxidants By Mallory Balice Program Specialist

A

ntioxidants are chemicals that help protect against free radicals, DNA damage, and diseases. Free radicals can come from processed foods or toxins and can damage the cells in your body. However, eating a variety of antioxidant foods will protect your cells and boost your immune system.

The best sources of antioxidants are fruits and vegetables. These superfoods include berries, leafy greens, blueberries, broccoli, spinach, and legumes such as black beans or kidney beans. Also, regular consumption of green tea is beneficial because it has antioxidants known as catechins. Tips on increasing your antioxidant intake: 

Incorporate fruits and vegetables at every meal.

Look at the colors on your plate the next time you eat, and add foods with rich vibrant colors.

Use different herbs and spices in your foods: Turmeric, cumin, oregano, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon will help boost your antioxidant intake.

Snack on nuts, seeds, and dried fruit (with no added sugar or salt).

You can live a healthier lifestyle by incorporating antioxidant-rich foods into your diet. Start today by adding a serving of fruit to breakfast or a vegetable as a snack!

Featured Events . . . Items of Interest The Sock Hop was a big success thanks to all the folks who purchased tickets and danced their socks off to the great music provided by Mike’s Garage Band! Heartfelt thanks, also, to the individuals and local businesses who generously donated in support of the fundraiser. Let’s not forget the behind-the-scenes folks who made the dance possible: the planning committee and volunteers who worked the event. We truly appreciate everyone’s support of our programs for seniors. ...for summer: Friday Pilates classes now at 9:30am. Zumba Gold is now 9am on Mondays and Thursdays.

Center is Closed Monday, September 4th in celebration of Labor Day. We’ll reopen Tuesday, September 5th, at 8am. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday.

National Senior Citizen Day is Monday, August 21st. Some people celebrate Senior Citizens Day on August 14 as it was the day past US president Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935. However, in 1988 Ronald Reagan, who was the US president at the time, declared August 21 to be National Senior Citizens Day. Celebrate this holiday by spending time with the senior citizens you know to let them know that they are appreciated and loved or consider volunteering either here at the Center or any number of senior-oriented places that would appreciate the help. If you are a senior citizen, check for special discounts and promotions that may be offered at stores and restaurants in your area. Tabata Exercise Class began last month. If you haven’t given it a try, please do. It’s unlike traditional exercise programs and may be just what you’re looking for. The class is taught by Instructor Shelley Riffel. Classes are held Wednesdays at 10am. Tabata is a type of high-intensity interval training designed to get your heart rate up (and burn calories) in that anaerobic zone for short periods of time.

Bowling at the Brunswick Bowling Center in Shallotte every Wednesday at 10am. Next date: Wednesday, August 16th. Cost: 9 bucks. Don’t “strike” out on this deal! Call to sign up by August 11th. Certified bowling coach Ed Ambrose is available if you need a little (or a lot) of extra help. Come enjoy a fun day out of the sun with a bunch of friendly folks!

Join us for a fun shopping trip to Sunset Beach Market and lunch in Calabash. Bus leaves at 9:30am. Sign up required.

...for summer: both of Keith Webb’s Tai Chi classes. They’ll resume in the

Geri-Fit® is an evidence based strength training exercise program for older adults. During this 45minute class, you'll improve strength, balance, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Geri-Fit accommodates all age groups from 60-100 and each person is encouraged to work out at his/her own pace. The instructor will provide plenty of one-on-one assistance in the beginning to assure that you're learning the correct way to work out with weights. We suggest individuals start out using a set of 2-pound dumbbells and then, as their strength increases, they can use heavier dumbbells in order to build more strength and balance. There's no aerobics, dancing or choreography to learn and there's no floor work. Most of the exercises will be performed seated in chairs. Geri-Fit is an ideal ongoing evidence-based exercise program for chronic disease self-management such as diabetes, heart disease, pain, arthritis, and weight loss/management as well as an ongoing EBP for fall prevention course graduates. Geri-Fit is a tier III (highest level) evidence-based health promotion / disease prevention program recognized by the AOA, ACL, and NCOA.
