Hall of Famer and legendary baseball catcher Yogi Berra is credited with the malapropism, “It’s déjà vu all over again.” That’s what it felt like cutting the ceremonial ribbon at the new Brunswick Center at Supply, just 30 days after a similar ceremony in Leland. The opening of Supply marks the third structure completed in less than five years. While the pace has been fast, we are grateful for the progress made on this longstanding promise. Happy 5th! I have to also make mention of that April marks the anniversary of the Brunswick Senior Buzz. Consistent with many parts of the organization, the publication has risen from a monthly bulletin to a full-fledged new magazine. The first edition featured 12 pages and provided mostly menu and activity calendars. Five years later, the newsletter has 32 pages and includes sponsors, community outreach opportunities, information on needed services, senior spotlights, trip information and BSRI organizational updates. We are always looking for new ideas and if you have information that you think would be of benefit to the community, please share that information with a center supervisor.

Monitor from the Wilmington Area Agency on Aging (AAA). The AAA is responsible for conducting both periodic and annual reviews on major programs and services offered by BSRI and by providers in Columbus, Pender, and New Hanover counties. Our AAA does far more than just monitor programs and services; they advocate for and support senior needs and causes to improve the quality of life for our local aging populations. Our AAA also provides us with an unwavering amount of support and we are fortunate to have the help of such a dedicated organization. The Monitor process lasts about a week and accounts for every program and service. This year’s Monitor focused on homedelivered meals, transportation, senior center operations, and family caregiver programs. I am pleased to announce that BSRI passed its annual Monitor with some of the best marks in its history. BSRI is always interested in improving in any way that it can and we look forward to an

This assistance is free to seniors and available at the Brunswick Center at Southport and the Leland Senior Center. Those living in the southern end of the county can get tax filing assistance at the Rourke Library on Main Street in Shallotte. For additional information on walk-in times and appointments, please call (910) 754-2300. BSRI is seeking community support from area residents, businesses, and nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Calabash area center. A goal of $100,000 has been set to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. Thanks to all who make a difference each day!

Keep Those Letters Coming! Home Builders Donate Funds Tracey Tew, Executive Officer with Brunswick County Home Builders Association, presents Debra Marlowe, BSRI’s Development Coordinator, with a donation of $750 to assist with providing services and programs at BSRI’s new Brunswick Center at Supply at 101 Stone Chimney Place. The Brunswick Center at Supply

Spacious Center Opens in Supply By Shelagh Clancy

O

n March 20, local dignitaries, BSRI staff, and friends and participants gathered to cut the ribbon and open the new Brunswick Center at Supply at 101 Stone Chimney Road. Our newest facility replaces the current Supply (Lockwood Folly) site and the Sunset Harbor site. “I love the new Supply center because of what it represents,” said BSRI President and CEO Jim Fish. “In April 2012, I was notified that we would no longer be able to meet at the Mt. Pisgah Church. Supply represented our largest senior nutrition site (as it was called in those days) and its attendance rivaled many of our full service centers. Within a period of three months, we had to find options for where to go and still meet the senior's needs.”

Because Supply covers so much territory, some participants moved to the Lockwood Folly site, and some to Sunset Harbor. But the goal was always to reunite this close-knit group. The new center represents everything coming full circle, Fish said.

Karen Kirkman, Sunset Harbor site manager, expects to add participants because of the central location. “We can anticipate our numbers to rise with the opening of the new Stone Chimney location, “ Kirkman said. “The new site has so much room. It’s going to offer our clients so much more.” Gloria Pieczarka, site manager at the current Supply site, agrees. And Fish shares their enthusiasm. “What is exciting about the center is its potential to serve many people, to generate revenue to support programs by being able to rent it after hours, and the large property it sits on that’s available for both indoor and outdoor activities,” Fish said.

The Brunswick Center at Supply offers spacious rooms for senior activities. Below in the lobby are Case Manager/SHIIP Coordinator René Tarquinio, Organizational Development Coordinator Debra Marlowe, and Caitlin Josey .

A Walk Through the Twentieth Century By Linda Walters

L

ove, music, and art have walked with Dorothy Coble for nearly a century. At 92, Dorothy’s warm smile and the twinkle in her eyes are welcomed wherever she goes. Dorothy McKenzie came into the world on June 23, 1924, in Charlotte. John Baxter McKenzie and his wife, Josie Lena proudly welcomed her as sister to 3-year-old Carla. The family added a brother, Owen Ray, in 1928. Dorothy’s dad worked in textiles while her mom was busy maintaining a loving home. In 1929, when the economy began the Great Depression, her mother’s skills at sewing and canning fresh produce contributed greatly to their survival. “Mom was skilled in sewing and crocheting. She made all my dresses and would often be requested by others to sew for them,” Dorothy said.

“Music was a big part of my life growing up,” Dorothy said. “Dad played tenor saxophone; Mom, the piano; brother Owen Ray, the alto saxophone; and I played the violin. Mom and Dad would play at the theater while people watched silent movies.” On Sundays, the family attended

the Presbyterian church a half block from their house. “Mom and Dad played music and would often perform an impromptu musical or sing solo for the congregation. After church, we would go out for ice cream,” Dorothy said.

Dorothy attended Burlington High School taking secretarial courses. “High school dress was a blouse or sweater, calf-length skirts over full, starched stiff petticoats, bobby sox and saddle oxfords,” Dorothy said.

“We would ride the trolley car in Charlotte to get around town. My family purchased their first car when I was 13 years old, a 1930 Ford. I was 15 when I learned to drive a 1936 Ford. At 16, I got to see the ocean for the first time when my family drove to Carolina Beach, North Carolina.” Dorothy graduated high school at the age of 17. She often went skating and to parties with friends. A friend once asked her to double date at a party the teens were having at a pond. Dorothy accepted, and she met her future husband, Devoy Coble.

Senior Spotlight Devoy and Dorothy dated until 1941, when Devoy was called into service as an Army sergeant. He served four years in the South Pacific during World War II. “One of the happiest times of my life was when Devoy returned home from war. But I was also a little peeved at him," said Dorothy. “Devoy arrived home and my Dad saw him in town before I knew he was home. That did not sit too well with me.” Dorothy warmed up again when Devoy showed up that evening with roses and candy.

Snowcamp. Married 61 years, they have a son, Larry Dean; a daughter, Toni Linette Holland; 16 grandchildren; and a greatgrandchild. Devoy died in 2006, and Dorothy moved to Brunswick County in 2014, where she lives close to her family. For Dorothy Coble, 92 is a number, not just an age. She is happy and energetic and stays active by participating in exercise classes at the Southport Senior Center. Dorothy McKenzie and Devoy Coble married in 1945.

“It’s a blessing to be able to come to the center for exercise classes, for lunch, and to socialize with others,” Dorothy said.

Devoy and Dorothy married in 1945. They moved into Devoy's parents’ home in Snowcamp in Alamance County. “It was nice to be with family, but I would not recommend it as a choice for newlyweds,” Dorothy said. The couple soon moved into their own home as Devoy continued his career as a supervisor in a textile mill and Dorothy as a secretary for Western Electric. “I am grateful that I took secretarial courses and learned to type in high school. I enjoyed a good career,” Dorothy said.

At the age of 50, Dorothy also

A Love Gift to the Leland Senior Center Edna May Hans started attending the Leland Senior Center in 2015. A native of Pennsylvania, Edna moved to North Carolina to live with her daughter and has been participating at the center for two years. She has always crocheted, knit and sewed. She would make baby hats and blankets and take them to New Hanover Hospital. “I feel that ladies, young people need to learn this sort of thing so that they can have something to do when they are older, something worthwhile” stated Ms. Hans. The flag was created from the left over yarn used to re-make ropes for veterans and it took a couple of months to finish. As it turns out, Ms. Hans crocheted all 50 stars on the flag because the pattern she used only had 46 stars. It didn’t occur to her that the beautifully crocheted flag would be displayed in the new Leland Center. Ms. Edna will celebrate her 95th birthday in August 2017 and she says she has “so much to thank the Lord for.” Edna had been married for 75 years after her husband passed in 2012 at the age of 96. She speaks in adoration of her 2 sons that have passed away and a wonderful daughter and son-in-law that take great care of her. She refers to the flag as “A gift of Love.”

The Leland Center would like to extend our many thanks to all who expressed an interest in volunteering for the front desk. Your help allows us to give back to our seniors.

The Leland Center Motto: “Count your life by smiles, not tears. Count your age by friends, not years.”

New Brunswick Center at Leland Opens Its Doors It’s official! Community leaders, officials, and friends gathered Feb. 20 to cut the ribbon and take a peek at the new Brunswick Center at Leland. The center is a step toward Brunswick Senior Resources Inc.’s goal of a senior center in each county district, said BSRI President and CEO Jim Fish. The center joins similar facilities in Southport and Shallotte, and a fourth opened in March in Supply. There are also seven senior sites throughout the county.

Brunswick County Commissioner Frank Williams welcomes visitors to the new center.
