Welcome to the entry of Brunswick Senior Resources’ most active time of year. Fall festivals, major events, and the ramp-up to the holiday season start shortly after Labor Day. We look forward to the break from the summer heat and enjoy the activities associated with being able to be moving outdoors during the middle of the day. The first major event is the annual Seniors Helping Seniors and Their Caregivers scheduled for Friday, Oct. 13. This year’s event will be held at the new Brunswick Center at Supply at 101 Stone Chimney Rd. This year will feature an expanded format to include a mix of presenters, entertainers, vendors, and door prizes. We will be treated to our opening ceremonies conducted by the Sheriff’s Office Flag Corps. BSRI will post signs on Highway 211 and Highway 17 to make it easier to find. Please come and plan to be informed and entertained as we meet members of the community and connect with local available resources. There is no cost associated with the Senior Helping Seniors Event but due to its popularity, we respectfully request that you make a reservation so that we know how much food we need to prepare. Without a reservation,

It’s been two years this month that the communities of Bolivia, Town Creek, Winnabow, Mill Creek, and Piney Grove came together to support the growing need for a senior site. Renovations that began at new Calabash Area Senior Center on June 19 have progressed to the interior now receiving updated and improved insulation, and plumbing and electrical work are moving forward. Trenching of the concrete in the parking lot to connect to city water and sewer will be completed this month. Construction work is expected in the spring of 2018. The new Calabash Senior Center is approximately 12,000 sq. ft. and is situated on nearly 5 acres of land in downtown Calabash. Its location will provide easy access to all local amenities and businesses. A modular structure was placed

the Briar Patch Florist and Gifts during construction. We encourage the community to support the florist as it will be a permanent tenant in the new senior center. BSRI is seeking community support from area residents, business and nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Calabash area center. A goal of $100,000 has been set to meet that need. Roughly $45,000 has been raised thus far. A sign has been placed on Beach Drive so the public can monitor fundraising progress. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. The first day of Fall will be here soon!

Lindsey McClelland has joined the BSRI staff as assistant director at the Brunswick Center at Supply. McClelland moves to the area from Jacksonville, N.C. She’s originally from Goldsboro but spent many years in Jacksonville due to her husband David’s military career. The couple has two children, Ava Rose and Aidan, and the family includes three Chihuahuas. “I last worked at Onslow County Public Schools as a program assistant for youth services,” McClelland said. “My family owned an assisted living home where I began my first job and developed my love and respect for seniors.” She received her bachelor’s in social work from University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2015 and is enrolled in graduate school at Liberty University. McClelland loves shopping, looking for treasures in consignment and thrift stores, and traveling to new places. She also enjoys live music and theater. “I am very thankful and excited about the opportunity with BSRI and look forward to working with the communities and people of Brunswick County,” McClelland said.

BSRI News

In Honor and Memory of Richard “Dick” Hewett Our zealous friend and health advocate, Dick Hewett, has changed his address. He departed this earthly life on July 26, 2017. Dick was an energetic member at BSRI in Southport. His position as a Washington, D.C. lobbyist afforded him the ability to properly address our concerns and needs. His advocacy for the seniors in Southport was constant. He loved attending exercise classes and interacting with his many friends. Even when his health severely compromised his ability to exercise, Dick remained interested and faithful. His perseverance was admired by all of us who had the honor to know and love him. We continue to speak of Dick and his strength of character. We are most grateful for BSRI at Southport for providing the opportunity to know such a great statesman and friend. —Rita Sanders, Exercise Instructor and Friend

Senior Spotlight

If you want to know how to win, Peggy Owens can offer some suggestions, because competition is her passion. Peggy competes each year in the Brunswick County Gator Senior Games and, since 1996, has won five gold medals. Peggy, born June 10, 1935, is

the oldest child and only daughter of Arthur “Doc” Mangum and Ruby (née Whitley) Mangum. She and her brothers Johnny and Grant grew up on a farm in Wilson County. Farm life included chores, fun, friendships, and learning to sew, needlepoint, knit, and crochet. These skills have provided lifetime enjoyment and many gifts. Maynard Owens, who lived on a neighboring farm, asked for Peggy’s hand in marriage. Peggy graduated from East Carolina University with a teaching degree.

Maynard graduated from N.C. State, followed by a career with the federal government in soil conservation. Their careers led them both to Beaufort, where on Dec. 20, 1959, they got married. They had three children, Glen, Audrey, and Kenneth. In 1968, the family moved to Shallotte. Maynard and Peggy became active members of Calvary Baptist Church. Peggy taught Sunday school classes, bible school, started the Sunshine Club

Senior Spotlight Gator Senior Games. Peggy competes in six games: bowling, croquet, shuffleboard, horse shoes, bocce ball, and corn hole. She earned her first gold medal at state level in 1996. From 2001 to 2016, Peggy added four gold, three silver, and ten bronze medals.

for seniors, cooked for Wednesday night church dinners, sang in the choir, played the piano and the organ, and started the church library.

Travelling is another passion. Peggy has been to Europe, Austria, New Zealand, the Greek Isles, Canada, and Costa Rica. She would like to see more of the United

States, especially North and South Dakota. Peggy, a member of BSRI’s Shallotte Senior Center since 2012, enjoys making crafts, visiting and bowling with other members, and volunteering wherever she is needed. Gracious always, Peggy is active, vibrant and happy, and very much a winner in life. In the 2017 Senior Games, be assured, she is going for the gold!

Peggy taught fifth and sixth graders at Shallotte middle school for 25 years, retiring in 1992. “My greatest reward teaching school is the appreciation I received from some of my students after they graduated,” Peggy said. “Students would contact me to thank me for being a great teacher, and would tell me how I helped them to succeed.” “Maynard liked farming and would love to ride his tractor,” Peggy said. “He dreamed of owning a blueberry farm, and when he retired, he founded Owens’ Blueberries in Bolivia, a successful commercial farm where you can pick your own berries.” Through the years, the family grew to include four grandsons, two granddaughters, and three great grandsons. Maynard and Peggy were married 41 years when Maynard died in 2000. Their oldest son Glenn, and his wife Sharon, took over his father's blueberry farm.

Wishing to stay active and keep her competitive spirit going, Peggy began competing in Brunswick County Parks and Recreation’s

A thought about the fall season: While spring rejuvenates and clears our heads of winter’s cobwebs, and summer energizes and propels us into vibrancy, fall offers a special gift of its own: a time for relaxing, reflecting, giving thanks, and sitting still as this quote extols: "Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn." Elizabeth Lawrence. Get Connected to Your Senior Center! Get real-time notices about new activities, important changes, updates and cancellations. Send your email info us at agass@bsrinc.org. What Happens in Supply... By Debra Marlowe Organizational Development Coordinator Enthusiasts of horse racing, blackjack, roulette, craps and poker needn't travel far to indulge in their pastime. They can do it right in Brunswick County — and for a good cause — from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30. Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. (BSRI), Brunswick Family Assistance (BFA) and the Ocean Ridge Charities Association, Inc. (ORCA) are teaming up to present a second annual Casino Night for Charity. The evening event will benefit Brunswick County charities. Casino Night is fun for are casino regulars or first-time players – anyone can learn to play blackjack or roulette in minutes. Because the games are played for bogus money, the only risk is having too much fun.

Players will get a little flavor of Las Vegas while making a good bet for a good cause.

―This is a very worthwhile event in which people can support local nonprofit community charities while coming out for a night of fun," said Mike Gildea, president and founder of ORCA. ―Our goal is to exceed the almost $7,500 we raised for Brunswick County charities from the 2016 event.‖ The games of chance will take place at the Brunswick Center at Supply, 101 Stone Chimney Place. Debra Marlowe, Organizational Development Coordinator for BSRI, said, ―This venue is larger than last year’s and will allow for more participation and elbow room to throw the dice!‖ Players try their luck at the 2016 Casino Night for Charity. This year’s event is at 6 p.m. Sept. 30, 2017, at the new Brunswick Center at Supply.

Back by popular demand is the award-winning caterer Ryan Gibbs with his menu of heavy hors d’oeuvres featuring Ahi Tuna, Blackened Shrimp, and Braised Southern Pork. Unlike Vegas, no real money is won. Each $50 admission ticket buys $10,000 in ―fun money‖ to use at the gaming tables. Players can win prizes by exchanging their casino winnings/chips for raffle tickets. This year, some outstanding grand prizes include a big screen TV, a Johnnie Walker all-colors whiskey package, and many more exciting prizes. The event also offers sponsorships, and sponsors are acknowledged throughout the casino. Sponsorships opportunities are still available, so if you wish to be a part of this charitable fundraiser, please call Debra Marlowe at BSRI (910-754-2300). Buy your tickets at the Brunswick Center at Shallotte, or the Brunswick Center at Supply, or purchase tickets online at www.bsrinc.org/events.html.
