Happy Fourth of July! I would be remiss if I did not take a moment to recognize the special place that July has in the hearts of Americans as we recognize our independence. I am proud of all of our veterans and the everyday people who sacrificed so much to make today possible. My thoughts turn to my grandparents who were part of that special generation born of parents who fought a world war, survived a depression, and ultimately saved our nation through a second world war. I am so proud to know that they endured these challenges with the intent of passing a better world to us. July marks the one-year anniversary since Calabash Volunteer Emergency Medical Services gifted the Calabash V.E.M.S. Thrift Store to Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. for the purposes of continuing the mission of serving the local community and Brunswick County seniors. Acquiring the thrift store represents an opportunity to add funding to important programs and services and expand senior centers. Since then, a new senior center has been announced and proceeds have been used to help local seniors. I want to thank the residents of Calabash, Carolina Shores, and Sunset

Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO

Beach for supporting the thrift store with donations and volunteers. It has been a great first year and we expect it will only get better! As we experience the warmer weather of the summer months, please take precautions to maintain safe temperatures in your homes and monitor your activity schedules. For those who do not have air conditioning at home, BSRI has a limited number of fans available that we are happy to provide to you. Our goal is to help our senior community be healthy and safe. If you are in need of a fan, please call (910) 754-2300. FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4

County Commissioners voted on June 20 to appropriate BSRI’s annual budget request. This year’s budget represents a restoration of funding from previous levels and remains consistent with the commissioner’s desire to maintain a revenue-neutral county budget. The overall county budget marks the first time in eight years that there has been a slight increase. Special thanks to our county commissioners and county management for their support of senior services and programs for our county.

Sawyer and Associates have begun the design phase for the new Calabash Area Senior Center. We estimate it will take about 60 days to design a renovation plan for the 12,000sq.-ft. structure. Upon the completion of the design phase, a bid process to select a qualified contractor to complete the construction will be the next step. BSRI is seeking community support from area residents, businesses, and

July in Brunswick County can mean only two things: Fourth of July and trips to the beach. Buzz staffer Linda Walters headed to Ocean Isle Beach to snap our cover photo, reminding you to enjoy the ocean this summer.

nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Calabash area center. We must raise $100,000 to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution or serve on the committee, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. The interior framing and rough installation of the HVAC systems and sprinkler systems of the New Brunswick Center at Leland is complete and the project is on schedule—see details on pages 12 and 13. So far, $126,000 of the necessary $150,000 has been raised. A special thanks to a generous donor at the Brunswick Forest Singles and More Women’s Auxiliary who recently donated $1,000 toward the cause. Please help us get over the finish line. No donation is too small and all donations are tax deductible. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. Stay cool out there!

Your Devoted Servant, Jim

SHIIP: Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program By René Tarquinio, LBSW

If you have a complaint about your Medicare health plan, drug plan, or how your heath provider is giving care, then you may want to file a complaint. Every drug plan has their own specific rules so it is important that you know what these rules are before you file the complaint. If you file a complaint and the plan does not respond, then you can call 1-800-MEDICARE for assistance or your local SHIIP office (910-754-2300). If you’ve contacted 1-800-MEDICARE about a Medicare-related inquiry and still need help, then you can call 1-800-MEDICARE and ask for the Medicare Ombudsman’s Office. This office is responsible for making sure that your inquiry or complaint is resolved.

Before calling, you will need to have your Medicare card and health or drug plan information available.

The following is the fall schedule for the Intro to Medicare classes that are held at various Brunswick Community College sites. All classes start at 1 p.m. and end at 3 p,m. September 15: BCC Main Campus, Supply October 6: BCC Southport Campus October 13: BCC Leland Campus November 3: South Brunswick Islands Center, Calabash Please call (910)755-7378 to register.

Volunteers

Volunteers: BSRI Needs You in July By Sarah Powell Have a bit of time for a good cause? BSRI needs volunteers in the following areas this month:

Substitute Meals on Wheels drivers are called in the case that another driver calls out. Time commitment is about 1 hour and 15 minutes to 2 hours. We would like to meet the goal of making sure all routes are covered all of the time. Pick up time is 10 a.m. Food is already prepared and loaded into appropriate containers. Meals are delivered Mondays through Fridays so volunteer schedules can be flexible. We will work with you to find a schedule that works for you.

resources to answer clients questions. Scheduling is flexible: The volunteer chooses which day they will be able to counsel clients.

We need 4-5 volunteers at the Shallotte Senior Center to help pack meals for Meals on Wheels routes. Volunteers arrive at 9:30 and stay for about 2 hours to help volunteers load and unload meal bags. Volunteers can help with calling route drivers and ensuring they will be available to cover their route. Volunteers will also help with calling volunteers to come in and sub on a route if there is a vacancy.

Volunteers are crucial to this program. You won’t regret these 2 hours out of your day. The Brunswick Senior Buzz needs help telling your stories.

We need at least three new SHIIP volunteers in Leland. We will provide volunteers with a booklet along with a short online certification. Once volunteers complete the certification they will shadow under an experienced counselor. When the volunteer feels ready, they will begin counseling clients on questions concerning Medicare. Volunteers are always equipped with information and

Interview people you know, tell us about interesting things to do at your senior center or around the area, or take photos at a BSRI event. It’s fun and easy and there’s no big time investment. Training is provided.

MEET OUR VOLUNTEERS Above: Ken Mcgill is a SHIIP volunteer. He is very knowledgeable in counseling clients about Medicare. He has been assisting BSRI for more than two years. Below: Meals on Wheels volunteer Robert Howard helps by packing meals to be ready for volunteers to pick up.

Who’s Your Daddy? Tuesday, July 19, 1pm to 2:30pm. Learn more about tracing your ancestry from speaker Verna Johnson of Shallotte Family History Center. Presentation assumes a basic knowledge of genealogy and will provide more details on how to find “grandma” and all your relations using the internet, family histories, etc. Special attention to Ancestry.com will get you started with this amazing tool. Also, Googling for Grandma can break down those genealogy walls. Handouts available. Preregistration required. Blood Sugar Testing Friday, July 22, 11am. LPN Robertta DeBruhl and Holly Mitchell of Summit Place of North Myrtle Beach will host the event. The CDC reports that every 5 minutes two people die of diabetes-related causes and 14 adults are newly diagnosed. Get tested! It’s quick and simple and could save your life.

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

Old Fashioned Rock ’n Roll Sock Hop planned for Saturday, July 9, 6pm to 10pm at the Brunswick Center at Shallotte. Mike’s Garage Band will play your favorite oldies tunes including a little bit of beach, a little bit of shag, and a whole lot of rock ’n roll. Hot dogs and hamburgers are the main fare. Tickets are $12 each and are on sale online at www.bsrinc.org and at all BSRI locations. Proceeds benefit the Brunswick Center at Shallotte. Everyone! Put on your saddle shoes or penny loafers. Gals, slip on that poodle skirt and tie up your ponytail. Guys, style whatever hair you have with James Dean flair! Come reminisce with us about the good ole days while having some old-fashioned fun! Christmas in July! Seniors can sometimes be forgotten during the holiday season when the focus tends to turn to children and families in need. The BSRI Senior Stockings Program works to ensure low income, home-bound, elderly, frail, and isolated seniors throughout Brunswick County are remembered. Donations of items for local ladies and gentlemen such as slipper socks, bath soap, body lotion, socks, gloves, scarves, throw/ lap blankets, denture supplies, toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, paper towels, large print puzzle books (word finds, crossword puzzles or Sudoku), chocolates, candy, and non-perishable food items are appreciated. A small gesture of kindness in the form of a Senior Stocking donation reminds our seniors that they are remembered, loved, and valued. For many seniors, this is their only Christmas gift. If you're interested in helping, please contact Sarah Powell, volunteer coordinator at spowell@bsrinc.org or 910-754-2300.

New! Beginning Mahjong, Wednesday, July 20, at 1pm. Please join Susie Thompson who will teach you how to play the exciting game of Mahjong. What is Mahjong? It’s a traditional Chinese game played by four people around a square table. The game is played with tiles rather than playing cards. The aim is to be the first player to get a complete hand—four sets of three and a pair. Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation, and involves a degree of chance. The game is effectively the same as the card game Rummy. Mahjong Tidbit: the process of shuffling the tiles at the start of the game is known as "the twittering of the sparrows" presumably because of the accompanying noise. Because Mahjong means "the game of the sparrows" or “sparrow tiles" in Chinese, it seems likely that this is the source of the game's title. Source: http://www.tradgames.org.uk/games/Mah-Jong.htm

Weekly Update/Sip ‘n Chat — Share your questions, suggestions, or comments every Monday at 10am and every third Thursday at 11:30am. Coffee’s hot and free! Blood Pressure Check — LPN Billie Fulford of Amedisys will be here every 1st and 3rd Friday at 10am. No appointment needed. Loose Change Challenge — Do you have coins in your pocket or car that “jingle, jangle, jingle?” Donate that spare change to the senior center to help offset costs for our center’s senior programs. Celebrate Birthdays — Birthdays seem to come around quicker as we age! Celebrate these special days with us on the last Friday of every month. We’ll sing, eat cake, and have fun. Party hat and dancing is optional. Movie Day — To celebrate Christmas in July, we have five movies for you (all showings are on Fridays): July 1, 11am— Elf; July 8, 1pm—Home Alone; July 15, 11am—A Christmas Story; July 22, 1pm—Four Christmases; July 29, 11am—Home for the Holidays. Admission, popcorn and candy are free. Soft drinks and water available for purchase.

Meet Our Instructors! This month get to know Fitness Instructor Angela Ruel. Angela (middle) with two happy students. Angela Ruel is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and that’s good news for her classes! Her own struggle to stay fit definitely benefits her students. Through trial and error, she found what worked for her and now shows others how to achieve their personal best while doing it safely and in a friendly, fun environment. Angela’s says she’s never liked the “drill sergeant” approach so her classes are relaxed, light, and easy. Every class includes good music which provides just the right amount of “distraction” from all the real work students are doing! Her passion is to help people transform their bodies into health and vibrancy while providing gentle support along the way. She believes if you “do what you can” on a consistent basis, you will be amazed at how much you can accomplish. She says folks with disabilities can achieve fitness, too, by modifying or substituting the exercises to suit their needs—and she’s there to help you every step of the way. Angela has been into fitness for about 35 years and has taught at the Calabash and Shallotte center locations for 8-9 years. She teaches general exercise, Geri-Fit, and Pilates (and also participates in a 40 mile walk for cancer every year. *See inset below.+ Wow—now that’s fit!). While Angela’s classes promote strength and flexibility, hand-eye coordination and mental fitness are also built into all her exercises by design. Sneaky, huh? But a good thing for sure!

Students “workin’ it!” with stretch bands.

Cancer Walk Participants and Supporters

Working on shoulders and posture.

Angela hails from Fairfax, VA, and now lives in Ocean Isle Beach. She wants her students to know that she loves teaching and considers them her “fitness family.” She also wants them to know that she truly appreciates each and every person who makes the effort to come, have some fun, and get fit! (Speaking of getting fit...check out the muscles on these *very+ Geri-Fit gals below! You go, girls!)

Weight work!

GERI-FIT is FUN and gets RESULTS!

The Geri-Fit program is designed to build muscle and it (obviously) works: just look at these active senior participants! The Geri-Fit program session consists of eight consecutive classes. Class starts with a fun aerobic warm up and stretch, moves on to weight training designed (for seniors) to work every muscle, and is followed by a cool down and stretch. After the eight classes end, the next session begins. Returning participants are encouraged to up their weights to achieve additional results. Join us every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:15am and start living your best life!

Stockings for Seniors

Christmas Gets a Jump on the Season It’s Christmas in July! Come celebrate with us as we prep for our annual Senior Stockings program.             

 

Seniors can sometimes be forgotten during the holiday season when the focus turns to children and families in need. The BSRI Senior Stockings program works to ensure low income, home-bound, elderly, frail and isolated seniors throughout Brunswick County are remembered. Each year the number of Senior Stocking wishes increases. Would you be willing to donate items to help fulfill some Christmas wishes? BSRI is asking for donations of items for local ladies and gentlemen. A small gesture of kindness in the form of a senior stocking donation makes a BIG impact in the lives of our seniors! It reminds them that

they are remembered, loved and valued. For many of our seniors, this is their only Christmas gift. Volunteers are needed at all three senior centers to help sort and fill gift bags. If you're interested in helping with the senior stockings project, please contact Sarah Powell, volunteer coordinator, at (910) 7542300 or spowell@bsrinc.org. Senior center directors obtain specific Senior Stocking wishes throughout the month of July and into the summer months. These wishes can be picked up at the Brunswick Centers at Leland, Shallotte and Southport. Businesses or organizations interested in sponsoring multiple stockings can email Yvette Gosline, VP of Programs and Services, at ygosline@bsrinc. org for more information.

All proceeds help provide Services and Resources for Senior Participants at Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc., and other local charity organizations.
