Hilary Paige Smith News Editor Debate over a proposed pro-life club continued at Sunday’s UNB Student Union council meeting, yet no decision was reached.

The club, dubbed UNB Students For Life, was brought up at the Nov. 6 meeting during the ratification and recognition of clubs and societies. The group was looking to be recognized on campus; this means they do not receive funding from the Student Union like political and religious groups.

According to its description, “The University of New Brunswick Students for Life club is committed to proclaiming, celebrating and defending the dignity of all human beings from conception to natural death. The club works to educate and inform the students and faculty at UNB, and the public, on current life issues, directing them to various pro-life resources, such as crisis pregnancy and post-abortion counselling centres.”

The discussion was tabled at the Nov. 6 meeting and tabled again on Sunday to get further information from the group about their planned activities on campus.

Martel said he got in contact with the group prior to the meeting, but they didn’t respond with answers in time. Council was seeking more information about what the group

plans to do if they are recognized and if they are associated with the pro-life group that protests in front of the Morgentaler Clinic downtown.

Arts representative Cody Jack had concerns about the word “defending” in the group’s description.

“To me, the defending part is problematic. In that means, some sort of confrontation is brought into that.

Unless they can explain their way out of that, it will be difficult for me to support this,” he said.

Other councillors agreed that this is something that should be clarified with the Students For Life members.

Education representative Sarah Chamberlain-Boyle said she subscribes to pro-choice, but doesn’t believe the UNB Student Union should be acting as “morality police” in this case.

“I don’t think there’s anything here we can really hold back … I have a problem that we’re considering this the way we are,” she said.

Law representative Oliver GormanAsal said he doesn’t believe the UNB Student Union should be stepping into this issue.

“I don’t see anything productive about that. I just don’t understand why we would bring this debate into the school,” he said.

The debate lasted for about a half an hour and it was determined the discussion will be brought up again at the next meeting.

The last item on the council agenda was an in-camera meeting on an undisclosed topic.

UNB looking at pet policy for on campus pets

UNB’s risk management department has issued a reminder to the university community about the campus pet policy after some concerns were raised.

The standing policy was originally created in 1997 by past UNB president, Elizabeth Parr-Johnston. The policy has not been revised since 2001.

The policy, as attached to the Nov. 14 notice, states, “Pet animals may pose a threat to some persons, create a disturbance, foul buildings and grounds, cause allergic reactions and are a potential source of infection to valuable research animals.”

Bruce Rogerson, director of UNB security and traffic, explained that his office has received various compassionate concerns for an animal that has been seen unattended and tied outside of campus buildings for extended periods of time.

He also said the animal in question serves as an uncertified guide dog for a visually impaired student.

After such concerns were raised, the university’s Accessibility Advisory Council was informed of the concerns since this body could help to establish or revise appropriate policies surrounding service animals on campus.

Jody Gorham, Student Accessibility Centre director, said, “basically, it’s always helpful to review policies, update them, and revise them as needed because circumstances change over time; we have to be constantly making sure that our policies and procedures meet the needs of students,

faculty and staff.”

She also said “[the policy] will likely bare similarity to other university’s service animal policies.”

Once this policy is drafted it will allow for both certified and non-certified animals to enter campus grounds and buildings if, and only if, the user and the animal have been assessed, approved and marked by a tag through consultation with personnel of the Student Accessibility Centre.

In his discussion of the policy that is being drafted, Rogerson explained that, “[the animal tags] will help Security because if we get a complaint and go see the dog and it has the approved tag by UNB then we can answer the complainant [by saying the animal is approved to be on campus].”

Rogerson also mentioned that the UNB residence community is charged with putting further pet related policies in place for those buildings, on top of the campus-wide policies. The UNB residence handbook can be found online and it does have a section related to animals and pets.

Both Rogerson and Gorham believe that as society evolves, the university community can certainly anticipate the enrolment of more students with disabilities who require service animals.

For Gorham, it is easier to proactively fix issues than to reactively do so.

“If any animal is or appears to be stray, or if the owner cannot be found or determined upon investigation by Security, Animal Control will be contacted,” Rogerson said. This is the only potential sanction he believes could be used in the case of an unapproved animal on campus.

Union tensions high on campus after PSAC drive

Hilary Paige Smith News Editor Tensions are high between the university administration and one of the last groups of non-unionized employees on campus.

The administration has been accused of trying to thwart an attempt by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) to unionize 500 administrative, professional and technical workers on campus.

David Shaw, Atlantic organizer for PSAC, said the organization only arranged meetings during lunch hours or after hours. The university has been cancelling booking times for PSAC meetings, cancelling food orders for meetings and sending security guards to meeting rooms.

“We understand the labour laws

quite well. We treat the employer with respect. We don’t want to disrupt their work day,” he said.

He added the university is claiming that sending emails during work hours is disrupting employees.

“A ny emails we sent out said ‘Please read during your lunch hour or after work because we’re pretty cognizant of the fact that you can’t disrupt work time,” he said.

Kris McGrath, computer lab manager with the faculty of education, has worked at UNB for 14 years.

He is supportive of the union and has been vocal about the tension at UNB. “I come from a labour background, so I’ve been around unions for most of my life. I know people have strong opinions on the topic, but I believe they improve the

workplace for everybody. So, I was very quick to jump on board with the movement to bring PSAC in and unionize the APT (Administrative, Professional and Technical) workers.”

He said the university is using heav y-handed tactics and many employees in the APT group are backing away from the union.

“They’re afraid to speak their voices and I find it disappointing that such heavy-handed tactics would be used, especially in an institution of higher learning where we’re supposed to welcome different points of view,” he said.

The APT is a non-bargaining, but sanctioned group on campus. The group’s president, Sharon Smith, has already resigned from her position with the statement that she is taking

a stand on the issue.

“It has been suggested that we, as an employee body, disband the group as a political statement and that’s coming, not from any of the union organizers. That’s coming from the APT group, so people are pretty put out by what’s going on,” McGrath said.

The Association of University of New Brunswick Teachers (AUNBT) has written an open letter to the university in support of the APT workers. The AUNBT also allowed PSAC to hold one of their meetings in their small office on campus.

“It’s our view that workers do have a right to choose a union, if that’s what they want to do, if they want to unionize. And that, not only is it not illegal to sign a union card on campus, it’s actually a right that exists

under the Industrial Relations Act of New Brunswick,” Dr. Jula Hughes, president of the AUNBT, said.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Industrial Relations Act of New Brunswick guarantee the freedom of all employees to join a trade union.

The university administration isn’t commenting on the issue, saying only “There are disagreements between the administration of the university and the Public Service Alliance of Canada. These disagreements will be adjudicated by the Labour and Employment Board. For this reason, we are not at liberty to discuss the specific ongoing details at this time.”

Gregg Centre losing annual grant of $120,000 Alanah Duffy News Reporter In what is supposed to be the most giving time of the year, the University of New Brunswick’s Gregg Centre funding is being taken away from them.

The history-based centre, which studies human conflict, is losing an annual grant of $120,000 from the Department of National Defence.

“We are facing a situation as of the end of March where we will not have money for programs,” said Dr. Marc Milner, director of the Gregg Centre.

The Gregg Centre, which was created in 2006, has a mandate to study the causes, courses and consequences of war from the origins of civilization through to today.

The funding for the Gregg Centre runs in five-year cycles, with the funding set to expire this past March.

“We heard rumours in the fourth year that the Department of National Defence may not renew the program,” Milner said. “When we didn’t get the renewal notice [for funding] 15 months ago, we knew that we were already behind the curve in terms of the decision-making cycle.”

The centre received funding for another fiscal year when the chief of the defence staff intervened.

“He said, ‘this is too important to let it die. Let’s give them funding for another fiscal year and then we’ll decide what to do with the program’,” Milner said.

The Department of National Defence has been giving money to UNB since 1971, when the Military and Strategic Studies Program began.

It branched out into the Centre for Conflict Studies, which studied terrorism, in 1980.

The Gregg Centre began as a result of merging the Military and Strategic Studies Program and the Centre for Conflict Studies.

There are four pillars in the Gregg Centre’s mandate to study war: the study of terrorism and low intensity conflict, which the Journal of Conflict Studies is published under; military history and heritage; the Canadian Army Studies Project, which produced the book Kandahar Tour about a battalion from Canadian Forces Base Gagetown and their experiences during the Afghan war; and war in modern society, which Milner said is a broad issue and needs to be further developed.

This past June, the centre learned that the program would continue, but with an 80 per cent cut in funding. The centre also received mixed messages from the Department of National Defence.

“There was a review done internally within the Department of National Defence that recommended that the program was a success and that it be continued and be expanded,” Milner said. “The senior civil servants who run the program told us that the program was obviously a failure because it wasn’t producing anything useful and if they had their way, they would just trash it.”

Milner said that only one quarter of the Gregg Centre’s budget relies on the grant. One staff position is vulnerable right now, as well as funding for graduate students to take part in conferences and to travel to Europe and other parts of the world for research.

To get funding from other sources, Milner and his colleagues at the centre are applying for every grant they may be eligible for.

“We’re doing everything but a bottle drive and a bake sale,” Milner said. “Our staff has been just tremendous and that speaks well of their professionalism and commitment to the centre.”

“We haven’t lost hope in the Gregg Centre yet.”

Men from Mars, women from Venus? Not so much Hilary Paige Smith News Editor Women want picturesque afternoon picnics, candlelit dinners and holding hands on the beach. Men want sex. Raw, animalistic and steamy sex.

At least that’s what we’ve always been told.

Ashley Thompson, a PhD candidate in psychology at UNB, has proven otherwise in her groundbreaking research.

“Our whole lives we’ve always been told that men are from Mars, women are from Venus. And that men are only interested in sex and are only in relationships for the sexual aspects and women are all about romance, so the reasons why we engage in sexual activity are, men just want a release and women want to feel connected to their partner,” she said.

“That’s not necessarily what we found.”

Thompson began her studies two years ago. She had students come into a computer lab and view images both sexual and romantic in nature on a screen. They had to choose either “Unpleasant” or “Pleasant” on the screen. They were timed on their reaction speed and the findings stem from those.

“If they had an easier time pairing sexual images to the pleasant condition then they did the unpleasant condition, they would prefer sexual

images. On the contrary if they paired romance to the pleasant condition they would have an implicit positive association for romantic images. It’s about how quickly you can pair these two categories together,” she said.

The study found that both men and women took longer to associate the sexual images to the pleasant condition than they did the romantic images.

“Men and women both associated romance with the pleasant more quickly than they did the sexual, which implies that their gut reaction was that romance was more pleasant than sex. Not saying that sex wasn’t pleasant, just romance was preferred over sex,” she said.

Now, Thompson said, women can put that they enjoy long walks on the beach if they set up an online dating profile, and men will find that just as desirable.

The student has received a lot of attention for her work. Cosmopolitan magazine, famed for it’s sexy content, has accepted Thompson’s work for publication. It won’t go to press until the Spring, but Thompson has been in contact with them and checks the magazine when the latest issue comes out.

She’s also being published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour.

She said a university campus was the perfect place for this study. “[Students] are coming into their

Students, let’s talk about sex!

Sexuality Awareness Week is an event hosted by the UNB Sexuality Centre to raise awareness on a wide variety of topics concerning sex and sexuality.

Jason Retallick, coordinator of the Sexuality Centre, said the purpose of the week is to bring light to topics dealing with sexuality that are considered taboo in society. Topics such as sexual health, sexual orientation, relationships, and contraceptives will be brought into discussion this week.

Retallick said the week is important for students because it will create an open and safe space to talk and get information.

“The big thing with sexual health and sexual orientation in particular is that it’s not talked about in the community because it is a taboo in our culture. So being able to open a forum and create a tolerant space to talk about this can get people information,” Retallick said.

“We are really trying to promote openness and acceptance of anyone of

any background, as well as providing health information.”

Some of the week’s events include a performance by comedian and dating coach, Mr. Attraction, on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the SUB Ballroom. As well as a screening of “The Kids are Alright” that includes free popcorn and no entrance fee, on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Dineen Auditorium in Head Hall. The Sexuality Centre will also have information booths set up around campus throughout the week.

Retallick said that the main goal for the week is to let students know that it’s okay to talk about sex.

“This is the primary demographic where that is a relevant issue, but nobody is comfortable talking about it,” he said.

Retallick also said that the Sexuality Centre itself is always available to students. The Sexuality Centre is an information centre to help educate and provide resources to the campus community about anything involving sex.

It is also a safe space where students are free to talk about who they are to a set of open ears. It is not a counselling centre. However, Retallick says that Sexuality Centre can inform students

about services available to them.

“We are the first stop where you can get information about what is available, because that is hard information to find out,” he said. “If you got a question, we either know the answer or can tell you where to go.”

Retallick says that centre is a place for students to discuss and learn about different topics related to sexuality that they may not feel comfortable about doing anywhere else.

“What it really comes down to with sexuality, is you can’t really talk about in this community. There’s nowhere to go. You can’t go to your profs, you can’t go to your roommate, because there are certain things different people think are weird. And really, it’s all just different,” Retallick said.

“Sexuality is a spectrum … so it’s just really getting out there that everything’s normal. We just perceive things differently. And this is a space where people can talk about something that you otherwise don’t get to see or don’t get to talk about,” he said.

“Nothing is weird; it’s just a little different. And there is nothing wrong with that.”

Student studies the stigma around STIs Damira Davletyarova The Brunswickan It’s all about your attitude.

No matter how knowledgeable, educated and safe you think you are with regards to sexually transmitted infections you could still be at risk if you have sex, says Lyndsay Foster, PhD candidate in clinical psychology at UNB. Foster has been studying human sexuality since 2004. It was then, as a psychology student at the University of Regina, she noticed a growing number of STI cases across Canada. But looking beyond statistics, she decided to study issues surrounding sexually transmitted infections. Foster’s interest in particular was to determine how people perceive the risks of STIs, what

stereotypes they have and how they feel after being diagnosed.

In 2005, Foster joined the UNB Psychology Department as a graduate student, where she says she had an opportunity to explore both negative and positive aspects of human sexuality.

In her first round of research, Foster found out that perceptions of the risks of contracting STIs are not attitudes toward the infection per se, but toward a type of person they see as at risk. “[The] stereotype tends to be that it’s only people who are promiscuous, immoral, irresponsible, who have thousands of sexual partners - that type of person, who gets an STI,” Foster said, “which is really unfortunate because anyone who is having sex is vulnerable to STIs.”

In other research, Foster joined up with Sandra Byers, chair of the psychology department at UNB, to look at the factors that predicted STI-related stigma and shame. The study surveyed more than 200 UNB students. Foster and Byers observed that students who held socially and sexually conservative views were more likely to form stereotypes and possibly experience shame.

Moreover, other researchers found that these negative feelings can prevent a person from seeking proper medical care.

“People who have stronger belief in stereotypes are less likely to get tested and less likely to get treated,” Foster said. “They are more afraid to go to the clinic, in case people see them getting services.”

In latest research, Foster has done for her dissertation, the PhD candidate has studied

sexual well-being and experiences of people who were diagnosed with an STI. In total, 480 participants took part in online survey, from which 40 per cent had incurable STIs such as genital herpes or HPV (genital human papillomavirus).

The study was conducted across Canada and the US. The age of participants varied from 18 to 64 years.

The study showed surprising results.

Foster has found mixed reactions about STI diagnosis. While some people had negative experience such as feeling shame, guilt, anxiety - for others, diagnosis had little or no impact.

After comparing a group of people with STIs to the group without STIs, Foster even observed some positive sides to it.

“People who did have STIs reported

being on average more sexually satisfied with their sex life,” Foster said. “They’ve reported more positive cognition about themselves as a sexual person. On the other hand, they’ve reported more sexual problems.”

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, in 2009, there were 1569 reported cases of chlamydia, 52 cases of gonorrhea and 11 cases of syphilis in New Brunswick. As the numbers are increasing, this PhD candidate believes that her research will not just help to prevent, but help people with sexually transmitted infections deal with their diagnoses.

“It is very important for people to prevent an STI, but as many people are diagnosed, it is also important to understand their experiences.”

One-on-one with Mr. Attraction Alanah Duffy News Reporter The Student Union is presenting Ryan Clauson, a.k.a. Mr. Attraction, tonight at 7 p.m. in the SUB Ballroom; tickets are $5 at the door. Clauson is a dating coach who offers tips on attraction to students. The Brunswickan talked with Clauson over the phone last week to get the details on his career, success as a dating coach and what he’ll offer UNB students.

The Brunswickan: Why don’t you start by explaining what you’ll be talking about tonight?

Ryan Clauson: I am a standup comedian and I am also a dating coach, so I’ll use my background in standup to make my show very entertaining. My focus is on attraction; I wrote a book called The Nine Rules of Attraction. During my show, I will be teaching a couple of those rules. These are social skills that anyone, man or woman, can use to make someone attracted to them in an honest way. These rules can also be used in really any facet of your life, such as a job interview, making friends and just being more socially confident at a party. I think attraction is a skill that can be learned just like riding a bike. I teach people how to do that.

B: So, how did you get involved in the dating world? On your bio, it says that you used to be really shy. How did you overcome that?

RC: I was in college and I had a friend who told me - I was very nervous with women, very uncomfortable, very shy – and I had a friend who was naturally very good with social situations tell me, “why don’t you see if you can learn this?” I asked what he meant. I played hockey at the time and he said, “you play hockey and you spend hours analyzing hockey.” Like, we would spend endless hours watching videotape and we would analyze and break it down, but when it came to how I interacted with groups and with individuals and how I

walk into a room, I hadn’t spent any time thinking about that.

So, he said, “why don’t you see if you can learn to be more confident, more comfortable and more socially aware in situations?”

I’d always thought that the way you are is the way you are. If you’re nervous, you’re always nervous, if you’re good with dating, then you’ll always be good, there’s no in between. You’re born with what you have and that’s it. And he, of course, said, “no, you can learn it.” So I went out and learned it. I’ve read countless books on social dynamic and body language and all that stuff, but most of all, I went out and did it. I went out and I talked to strangers. Hundreds of them, probably thousands of them at this point. If you went out yourself, if anyone did, and talked to a couple strangers every day, after a couple of months, it would be very easy to talk to strangers.

I did this for so long that I just developed a pattern. You see very quickly that certain things make people uncomfortable and other things make people comfortable.

Once you learn these patterns, you can see how to take your unique personality, add a couple of things to it, and see that you can really connect with anyone. You’ll know what to do.

B: When you were trying to get comfortable talking with strangers and then women, did you ever experience any sort of rejection?

RC: I experienced tons of rejection.

Everyone experiences rejection. I still experience rejection. One of the big things that happens is, most people in high school have only ever tried to attract maybe three or four people. It’s not like most of us are trying to ask out hundreds of people – that just doesn’t happen. You have a couple of people who you kind of like, and you may have a crush on them for months, and then you may finally get the guts to ask them out after three or four months and they’ll say no

and you’ve been rejected. You haven’t really learned anything.

When you talk to people again and again and they reject you, it’s feedback.

What are you doing that’s making them uncomfortable? Why aren’t they reacting to you in a positive way? You learn from it and it makes you know what to do in the future and it also makes you stop caring. You start realizing there are so many people. Lots of people just won’t like me, because we have a different type of energy. You won’t like lots of people, but it’s a big world and I’m just going to float around and talk to lots of people and eventually, I’ll meet someone that I’m really into and they’re into me, and we’ll have a really cool positive connection.

B: Since you’ve become a dating coach, what are some of the most common problems that people come to you with?

RC: The biggest problem is that people don’t think they can learn it. People always think, I need to be good looking, I need to be good looking. When they think that and when they say that, they’re really missing the key point. Looks matter, but far less than anyone thinks. Your conversation skills and your body language are much more important. You can have a really attractive, fun conversation with someone and you can make them feel really good, and their attraction toward you will build.

The biggest problem that people have is that they’re way too focused on what they look like and not their personality and making their personality as attractive as they can.

B: You said earlier that you have nine rules of attraction. Can you give me some details about one or two of them?

RC: One of the rules is body language.

There was a professor, Professor Albert Mehrabian from UCLA, who studied human interaction and he learned that three things can make someone attracted to you in a situation: your words, your tone of voice and your body language. What’s interesting

Ryan Clauson. Submitted is that they’re not of equal value. Your words are only seven per cent of what will influence someone, your tone is 38 per cent and your body language is 55 per cent. People always ask me, “hey, what should I say?” but the bigger question is what should your body say? How can you move your body in an attractive way? People will judge you in two seconds or less. Lots of people don’t know that when you walk into a party, to a club, a bar, or your first college class, people look at you and they judge you before you say anything. It’s all based on what you’re doing...

Another rule is the power of peak state, which is seemingly very simple but a lot of people forget about it. I come here and people think that the person who is the

most attractive at, say a party, is the person who is the most physically attractive. Really, that’s not true. The people who we find the most attractive are the people who are having the most fun. When you enter a social situation, you are searching for fun. You will actually see people look around a bar or party to see where the fun is. Everyone is searching for the fun, so the mood that you’re in when you go out to a party is everything. How you feel before you walk through the doors will define how people feel towards you.

A quarterly report released by the Fredericton Police Force shows that sexual assault rates are rising.

Between July and September of 2010, there were 17 sexual assaults reported in the city. In the same period in 2011, there were 25 reported sexual assaults.

Cst. Rick Mooney, the communications officer for the Fredericton Police Force, said that the results were discouraging and encouraging at the same time.

“Obviously, one of these incidences is one too many from our vantage point,” he said. “In one sense, we’re discouraged to see that these numbers are out there, but on the other hand, we are encouraged that people feel the trust and feel that they . . . can bring this information forward to the proper authorities.”

Sexual assault continues to be an underreported crime, with only 10 per cent of cases reported to the police, said Lorraine Whalley, director of the Fredericton Sexual Assault Crisis Centre (FSACC).

“It’s always difficult, looking at police reports, to say what’s an increase in incidence, or if it’s an increase in reporting,” she said.

Whalley stressed that a sexual assault victim can contact the FSACC without any pressure to report the crime to police.

“We see our role as trying to provide information and look at what a woman’s options are,” Whalley explained. “We don’t encourage her or advise her one way or another when it comes to reporting to the police. We let her know what the procedures are, what would happen, what she would have to do, and support her in her decision.”

The FSACC, which is the only sexual assault crisis centre in the entire province, runs a 24-hour crisis line staffed by volunteers and offers counselling for victims of a sexual assault.

Whalley added that working with communities around the province is important to the centre.

“We have a sexual assault crisis intervention training program, which is a real variety of work that we’re doing to try to increase response in communities and provincially,” she said.

It is also important to note that going to the hospital to seek medical attention after a sexual assault has occurred doesn’t mean that it will get reported to the police.

“There’s a myth that if they go, it will get reported. A lot of women go without medical services because of this fear,” said Jennifer Richard, community development facilitator at the FSACC.

While staff at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital will alert the FSACC when they see a patient who has been a victim of a sexual assault, they will not report the assault to the police without the victim’s consent.

“There’s a sense of control,” Whalley said. “If they feel like they won’t have control, and if they access a service and someone’s going to call the police, that really limits their ability to get support when they most need it.”

“That’s why it’s so important for us to let women know that our services are confidential and we don’t have to report it to the police,” Whalley said.

Second chances for grade Why aren’t people interested in dates anymore? school cheaters only cheat those students

ST. JOHN’S (CUP) — Recently, Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest school board brought in new classroom rules. The most controversial of these is that teachers are no longer able to give a zero on a test when a student has been caught cheating. Instead, they are to arrange a time for students to retake the exam. In my opinion, the new policy enables cheating within the classroom.

Where is the benefit in this?

It is clearly not for the benefit of the teachers. There is such a diminution of the disciplinary action that can be used within a classroom.

Any authority that the teacher once held is only further eroded by this new rule.

If a student knows that they are able to cheat on a test and if caught will only have to redo the test later, what power does a teacher hold in telling students not to cheat in the first place? Yes, punishments such as suspensions are still valid. However, developmental psychology suggests that suspensions rarely work as a form of discipline and don’t usually benefit the student.

Aside from the classroom-management perspective, this new process could add hours to teachers’ personal schedules. If a student is caught cheating, consider the time spent rescheduling the test with the student, administration and parents.

Then there is the added time of recreating a test. Put that together with the time it takes to administer the test, and there could be several hours added onto a teacher’s schedule for one student caught cheating

on one test.

Some say the rule was instated to accommodate those with different rates of learning than others. But is leniency on cheating the right way to go about addressing these differences?

More than ever, schools are working to accommodate students with specif ic educational needs, from special testing environments to pathway-learning levels. These are making and will continue to make the biggest differences in allowing all students to achieve at their own rate. Perhaps more should be done to enhance these areas of education if this is the problem the new policy aims to correct.

Furthermore, the policy is extended to assignments. Grades will not be reduced for late submission.

How is this fair to the student who works to submit their assignments on time only to be surpassed by someone who decides to pass it in a week later for no good reason?

School is designed to prepare children and young adults for the world ahead of them, including post-secondary education. At university, the academic standards state that cheating on an exam or plagiarizing in a paper will be met with an automatic zero and may be grounds for expulsion from the institution. Submission deadlines vary between professors, but usually include a deduction for late assignments. How can schools say they are preparing students for post-secondary education when the very logistics of assessment are not being matched?

This policy is only educating young people that, when it comes to unethical actions, you always get a second chance.

Testo’s coming out was desperately needed Myles Dolphin The Concordian (Concordia University) MONTREAL (CUP) — Last week, ex-Montreal Impact player David Testo came out of the closet and expressed huge relief in doing so. His family, friends and teammates all knew about his sexual orientation. The rest of North American society was finally introduced to an openly gay professional athlete. We were ready for it.

“I’m glad he [came out], because he’s in a position where he can inspire a lot of people to do the same,” current Impact captain Nevio Pizzolitto told the Montreal Gazette. “Even though we’re professional athletes, we’re also human beings, and maybe something like this will change the minds of those in the same position.”

No male athlete in North American professional sports (the “big four” — hockey, baseball, football and basketball) has ever come out as being gay while in an active status, but that’s probably about to change. Testo’s revelation should have a ripple effect not only in his sport, but in the “big four,” too.

Between January and May of this year, 27 athletes, coaches, journalists and executives had already come out, including American figure skater Johnny Weir and Phoenix Suns president Rick Welts.

Testo initially remained silent because of the pressures he faced while playing for various organizations.

Fearful of the backlash and scrutiny gay professional athletes may face from their teammates and once-adoring fans, many other athletes are keeping mum,

too.

“It’s like you’re carrying around a secret, you know, and carrying luggage and just never being allowed to be yourself,” Testo told Radio-Canada in an interview.

It’s important to understand that there are openly gay professional athletes. They just don’t feel the need to tell you about it.

Sometimes their teammates know, but the gay athlete in question feels like they can compartmentalize this for now and deal with it when their career is over.

However, it looks like both society at large and most professional athletes are ready to accept gay athletes of any stripe.

Based on a 2006 Sports Illustrated study, “a sizable majority of professional athletes would welcome a gay teammate.” (By sport, it ranges from 57 per cent in the NFL to 80 per cent in the NHL.) A 2002 Witeck-Combs study found that 70 per cent of fans would not think negatively of their favourite athlete if he came out of the closet. These studies, although a few years old, are encouraging. I would suggest that those numbers would be even higher today, given the increasingly liberal nature of our society.

Homophobia isn’t cool anymore and hasn’t been for quite some time now.

When Kobe Bryant, one of the most marketable players on earth, can’t get away with making an anti-gay slur, it tells you something has changed.

Even if only one superstar “big four” athlete player comes out of the closet, it will set a precedent and open the floodgates for all the others. Once that takes place, we’ll see how far we’ve come. Until then,

A few years ago, this would have been unthinkable. Now, it’s on the verge of happening. Gay icon status was reserved

for pop stars and actors, but that’s about to change.

Gay professional athletes, whether they’re superstars or not, deserve to come out when they’re ready. Even more fans, teammates and organizations need to start thinking about these men as people they know, respect and trust, not as abstractions or abominations.

Dear Editor, I enjoyed reading Brandon Hicks’ article in the most recent issue of the Brunswickan regarding the film J. Edgar.

For the most part, I agree with Hicks’ analysis and sentiments however he makes one comment with which I feel I must contend. Hicks states the following in his article: “There is a scene involving crossdressing that seems to ignore the history altogether. The dramatic scene where Hoover wears his dead mother’s dress and pearls is fantastically performed, but it is uncomfortable to think it is being passed off as factual, where these traits in Hoover’s personality are unfounded.”

I felt compelled to write in and share my perspective on this matter, as I felt this was a misinterpretation of the scene.

In this statement, the author assumes that because this man is wearing female’s clothing, that he is therefore cross-dressing, and that this is intended to portray an element of Hoover’s personality and private life. I truly believe it is important to question the assumption that a man wearing women’s clothing is indicative of a tendency or desire to cross-dress.

I believe it is a tendency of our society to assume that gender-norm defying concepts, such as male homosexuality and cross-dressing, go hand-in-hand.

I also understand that it is a common (and untrue) assumption that those who cross-dress regularly are themselves gay.

Because of these commonplace presumptions, I understand that many viewers-queer(1) and straight alike--who see a gay character in female dress, come to the conclusion that this character, who only dons women’s clothing once, is being portrayed as a regular cross-dresser, and that his cross-dressing fills some internal need (or is an aspect of the character’s personality). However this assumption not only relies on inaccurate stereotypes of those in the LGBTQIA community, but in this particular situation deprives

the scene of its emotional depth and profundity.

Conversely, if we do not assume that this (gay) character is donning his mother’s clothes because he is a cross-dresser, we are able to understand the scene from a new perspective.

When Edgar’s mother dies, he dresses in her clothes and pearls, and looks in the mirror as he says to his reflection, “Be Strong, Edgar.” I understood from this sequence that Edgar, who would always first and foremost follow his mother’s advice, was lacking a role model. By dressing in his mother’s clothes he is trying to channel his mother, the one strong guide he had throughout his life. He is missing direction, and thus dresses as her and tries to channel her image in order to be comforted by her one last time.

I knew when I saw this scene that there was a dangerous possibility that most audiences would not be able to read the film this deeply. Because the main character is gay, we automatically limit the interpretation of this scene where we see him in women’s clothing, though not necessarily cross-dressing. Reading it in this way limits not only our ability to understand the emotion in the scene, but perpetuates tired societal stereotypes about the queer community. It is time to call into question our assumptions about what a queer identity means, if we are going to go towards a truly open and accepting society.

In general, this is a term that is accepted amongst the LGBTQIA community, and is usually not considered perjorative. 3. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy Atonement (2007) “The Library” This scene is arguably one of the sexiest because of the tender vulnerability of its characters, Cecilia (Knightley) and Robbie (McAvoy).

Relatively innocent sexual tension builds early in the film and they

find themselves alone in her father’s library. They declare their love for one another and make love against the books, Cecilia’s long, green satin dress around her thighs exposing her long, bare legs. She makes barely audible whimpers before her younger sister catches them.

Where are all the gays?

It’s fucking hard to find another gay person in Fredericton. Let alone a date.

I don’t think straight people realize how easy they have it. No matter where they are, they can walk into a room and chances are 50 per cent of it is full of potential partners, none of whom would be truly offended if they were to show any interest.

Gays, we don’t have it so good.

Sure, half the room might be full of the gender that we find attractive, but you know what? There’s a legitimate fear that if we approach someone and are open about our sexuality, that we will be rebuked with homophobia, fear and even violence in extreme cases.

So, what is a gay person to do in this city?

Fredericton may arguably be

the most gay-friendly city in New Brunswick, but that’s like telling your parents that you failed the least in your class. Relatively speaking, we may be great, but in terms of hard and fast numbers, where exactly are all the gays?

Where’s that cute gay couple holding hands at the coffee shop? Or the pair of lesbians getting engaged on their fourth date at Brewbakers?

W here are the drag queens for Chrissakes?

Those of you who have spent any length of time in Fredericton are probably already thinking of pointing in the vague direction of Boom.

Boom is great, don’t get me wrong; there are a lot of gay people there.

But that’s the problem, that’s the only place where I’ve seen the community being out and proud.

And for the record, going to Boom in hopes of finding someone worthwhile to date isn’t worth the time.

Once you get through the glitter and the ecstasy high of the average Boom-goer, there tends not to be a lot there.

Sure, they might be a good time for a night or three, but do you really want to go in for the long-haul with someone who lives with their parents and supports a drug habit with a retail job?

Maybe if they have the six-pack and a big dick, but that aside, do you really?

The solution to this problem is that we as a community have to increase our visibility to the public. I know there are cute gay couples out there and lesbians that are moving in together way too early; I know they’re right here in Fredericton.

I know this, but I never see it on the street. We as a community should take time to be proud more than one day or week a year. We have to be brave and hold hands with our partners, we have to yell fabulous things to the sky and we have to especially tell bigots to fuck off when they try to stifle us.

If we don’t do these little (and big) things, then where are we? Society cannot accept and welcome something it doesn’t see.

Probably not so popular with feminists, this tradition is quite the delicacy outside Japan. An article written last year in The Guardian by Julie Bindel, a self-proclaimed “lifelong f­ eminist campaigner against the sexual exploitation of women” about a Nyotaimori dinner in London.

She wasn’t impressed for obvious

reasons.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t do it at home for fun!

Sarah’s guide to hotter, more satisfying sex The New Position Sarah Vannier This is the sex issue, and this is a column about great sex. Passionate, sweaty, can’t-get-enough, knockingthings-off tables, up-against-thewall, to-hell-with-the neighbours, mind-blowing sex. We all want it.

But how do we get it?

Is great sex really just about knowing the tips and tricks for pleasing your partner? Is it about having orgasms easily and often? Is it about having sex in every position imaginable?

Peggy Klienplatz, a clinical psychologist and sex therapist, and her colleagues at the University of Ottawa wanted to understand more about what makes amazing sex so amazing, so they interviewed people who described themselves as having great sex. Here are a few of the qualities that characterize great sex.

First, be present. The most common thing that people who have great sex said was that they felt they were completely present and in the moment while having sex. This means being free of distractions and allowing yourself to get wrapped up in your partner (figuratively and literally).

This can definitely be hard to do.

Let he/she who has never thought “did I remember to turn off the stove?” while having sex cast the first stone.

But, next time you are about to get down to business take a little extra time to focus on your partner and take in all the little details. How do they look? How does their skin feel on yours? How does it feel when they touch you? Bonus points for doing everything two or three times slower than usual.

Secondly, a connection is important to establish with your partner.

Many of the people who were interviewed said that they had great sex when they trusted, cared for and respected their partner. This helped them to listen and understand what their partner wanted.

Interestingly, ‘listening’ to your partner doesn’t just mean hearing

what they say; it also means paying attention to the non-verbal cues they are sending. For example, how do their respond when you touch

them in different ways or in different places?

One more key to having great sex is being authentic, genuine and uninhibited. Allowing yourself to let go of any worries or insecurities is a big part of being able to enjoy sex.

If you are worried about how your body looks, or what your partner will say if you tell them what you like, it is much harder to be in the moment.

And of course, being authentic and uninhibited is a million times easier if you are with someone that you have a connection with.

The last quality of great sex that I want to mention is exploration and fun. Sex is supposed to be a chance to figure out what feels good to you and to your partner. It’s a chance to play, have fun and enjoy yourself.

Great sex in movies might be all about intense eye contact and clothing being ripped off, but sex in real life doesn’t usually work that way. A friend of mine has a personal policy to never sleep with someone that she can’t have a good laugh with, because sometimes sex is downright hilarious. Someone is going to get an elbow in the eye, fall off a bed, or get a leg cramp, and you need to be able to laugh about it.

Interestingly, none of the people Dr. K lienplatz interviewed mentioned specific sexual behaviours, positions, or techniques. Great sex wasn’t about having a lot of orgasms or having a partner who knows the”78 ways to turn him on” (Cosmo, July 2011).

Another of the great things about Dr. Klienplatz’s research is that it didn’t focus on a specific group of people. It included both men and women. Some of the people that were interviewed were in their 20s and some were in their 80s. Some identified as straight, some as gay and some as bisexual. The qualities of great sex transcend gender, age and sexual orientation.

The great Sue Johanson, nationreknowned sexpert, once said, “Sex is perfectly natural, but not naturally perfect.”

Here’s a list of our most cringeworthy sex epics.

1. Lube n00b So, this one time, when I was living in Quebec for the summer, I decided to visit a sex shop with some friends. I picked up massage oil and lube as a gift and, eventually, upon returning home, I broke out said gift with a partner. I didn’t know I was allergic to lubricant and broke out in a rash of hives, jumped into the shower, took an allergy pill and eventually the swelling went down.

Avoid this by: ALWAYS checking the warnings and list of ingredients on any skin product, not just those that are applied below the belt.

Know your allergies, know yourself.

That said, lubricant can make sex a safer and more pleasurable experience, so pick up a hypoallergenic bottle.

2. White couch So, this one time in high school, I brought a girl back to my house.

We were watching television on the couch and things started to heat up.

We were getting it on and, when it was over, the couch got a little reupholstering. Later, my mom asked me if someone spilled juice on the cushions. It was me.

Avoid this by: Carefully removing a condom so no jizz is spilt on the couch/bed/her vagina. If you’re

raw-doggin’ your partner, keep a jizz receptacle close.

3. North Shore kama sutra So, this one time, my girlfriend I were searching for a place to park. We finally decided on a dimly lit parking lot in front of a Jeans Depot. As we got down to business, a car began driving in and out of the parking lot. All of a sudden, two cop cars swooped in, red and blue lights blazing, and swung open the door. My pants were around my knees. Turns out, the car from before belonged to the store owner who thought we were planning to rob Jeans Depot.

When the cops realized what happened, they laughed their asses off, patted me on the face and told me that best places to park.

Avoid this by: Being careful where you park (Avoid sketchy denim depots on the north shore of New Brunswick).

4. Flooded out This is how my parents found out I was having sex. I was having sex with a guy in my basement and my parents weren’t home, and after we were done the guy flushed the condom down the toilet. We didn’t know that you’re not supposed to do that, and then my basement flooded and my dad’s office is in the basement, so all of his papers for work got ruined.

Then, when my dad was fixing the toilet, he found a Tutti Frutti condom. He made me come downstairs and explain and then he yelled at me a lot and it was probably the worst thing that has ever happened to me.

5. All gummed up One evening I got a sticky surprise after a particularly hot session of oral sex. My boyfriend didn’t think to spit out his gum before going down on me and we were having so much fun I didn’t realize little pieces of gum had stuck to my pubic hair. Luckily chunks of hair cut out of that area isn’t as noticeable as the top of your head.

6. The song of love In high school I was ‘seeing’ this girl who came from a particularly religions background. luckily for me, she was easily corruptible and acquired a taste for a good time.

However one time in the middle of having sex, her father (a bigger man in stature) came home unannounced and in our perspective ill-timed. In the excitement she quickly gathered her clothes and bolted into the bathroom before he made it up the stairs, leaving myself in her bedroom trying to find all of my clothes and dress myself before he found me. I was able to put on everything except my socks, which I feared would make it obvious seeing how it was January.

However the more obvious aspects of my appearance was that I was visibly prepared for fornication. So just as he approached the door I grabbed her guitar, jumped on the bed, and started to play nervously as he entered the room. After conversing with him for several minutes and I would use the expression “shaking out of my socks” if I had been wearing them he said he had to be getting back to work and the crisis was narrowly was adverted.

7. Chomp chomp My buddy and I were out at the

Have we been over-sexualized or is somebody overreacting?

It seems to me that in a few western countries – Canada, the United States and Britain, namely – sex has remained as taboo a subject as it was in medieval times.

It’s a small wonder so many of us have grown up with cockeyed perceptions of sex, each other and ourselves.

Now, I don’t mean to generalize and blanket everyone with this diagnosis; some of us have certainly developed into healthy, functional individuals with healthy, functional sex lives. But surely some of us will spend our youth, our 20s and quite possibly our 30s searching for answers to several pressing questions.

Why am I more comfortable having sex with a stranger?

Why do I feel pressured to fake an orgasm?

Who do I convince myself I can erase inner turmoil by bringing someone home for the night?

I don’t think critics are overreacting in this instance, at all. The media skews our perceptions of sex and relationships without a doubt. Mainstream TV shows and films familiarize us with the promiscuous sexlives of young people (not that this isn’t a common phase to endure in our 20s), but nonetheless, it’s nearly impossible not to

be conditioned to think it’s the norm and what’s expected of us.

We come to accept the notion that adding notches to the bedpost is the way to go. And hey, no judgment here – if you’re having safe sex and lots of it, that’s fabulous – but as our sex columnist Sarah Vannier said in one of her early columns on sexual decision-making, you need to be sure you’re having sex for the right reasons.

Some of us learned this in school, and others didn’t. Sex-ed classes aren’t exactly of equal quality across the country, so the school system is bound to fail at least a few of us. But not all blame can be placed there; sometimes it’s the blatant state of denial our parents are in about our sexuality that misdirects us.

C’mon, parents. We have to face the fact that you had sex, now come to terms with the fact that we’re going to.

And do your best to prepare us.

There’s an overall stigma about sex talk, not to mention at the dinner table: it’s inappropriate, it’s lewd and it makes us squirm with discomfort. But, why? In Europe, sexuality is more accessible and widely discussed. It’s accepted as natural.

So, the stigma here at home that sex is a very private and in some cases dirty behavior, can be confusing. Shows on TV are pounding (excuse the pun) out the opposite message: sex is here and it’s now and it’s everywhere.

Satellite capabilities have made it possible for all kinds of explicit content to reach anyone of any age at practically any time of day. I argue that it’s okay to be exposed as a teen in realistic doses -- cultural and

media literacy are good things --but not as a solitary means of education.

A well-rounded exposure to stimuli helps eliminate the issue of ignorance, but just as pizza is not a good substitute for vegetables (despite what the U.S. Congress recently decided), watching sex on TV or online isn’t a good supplement for becoming educated on the real thing. In other words, it shouldn’t be taken as gospel because the result is a misguided perception about how sex really works.

Sex with strangers can be fun and exhilarating and may momentarily boost self-esteem if that’s the reason for having it, but a healthy, patient relationship is much more fulfilling and can still be exhilarating, just not in the same way that the mystery of new people can be. But it’s shallow, and it doesn’t last.

I’m 23, and I’d venture my generation has been both guilty of lacking critical thinking about this subject, and also victimized by a widely accepted way of exploring sex. I’d also venture some generations before mine, and certainly after mine, have been and will be adversely affected.

This is why the media and its many far-reaching tentacles, which have been criticized for years about sexual content, need to be cognizant of the effects of its broadcast to young adults. There are so many factors implicating young people when they’re most impressionable, someone in a position of power (parents can only do so much) must take the reins and curb material that produces incomplete versions of how sex is in reality to prevent future instances of incomplete sexual literacy.

UNB skates their way back to top spot in the AUS

K. Bryannah James Sports Editor The University of New Brunswick men’s hockey team split its weekend as they redeemed their first place AUS standing placement after Sunday’s game.

Friday night the Reds travelled to UPEI to play against the Panthers, who on Nov. 5, beat the Reds 5-4 on home ice at the Aitken Centre.

Nov. 5 was the first loss for the Reds in their regular season of play, which was followed by a loss to Acadia the following weekend, and another loss to the Panthers this past weekend.

With three losses in the last three weeks, the V-Reds were knocked out of their first place standing, an unfamiliar and uncomfortable place for the reigning CIS champions.

As the Reds took to the ice against the Panthers, they didn’t know the outcome would be their third loss of the season. However, as the game went on, the realization became all to clear.

The first V-Red to put a digit on the board was Tyler Carroll, who gave UNB a 1-0 lead during the first.

By the second period, Kyle Bailey helped pull away from UPEI at 16:28, bringing the score to 2-0.

By the end of the second period, UPEI came back with two goals. The Varsity Reds entered the third period in a neck-and-neck battle as they fought to win the game, but the Panthers scored early in the third and the Reds were unable to even the playing field, losing 3-2.

By Sunday, the tables were about to turn.

Like every game, he skated out to his net, cut to the left, then to the right, and again until he’d slashed the smooth ice in front of him. He squat-

It set the tone.

This was the game the Reds would redeem themselves as they took on the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus, the top seeded AUS team starting the game.

“We couldn’t lose two in a row and that was a really good team out there,” said Thomas Nesbitt.

“You know we didn’t like seeing them up ahead of us in first place and

it wasn’t a good feeling.”

UdeM pulled away with the first goal of the night late in the second. But that didn’t stop the Varsity Reds.

“There’s veterans in the room and they stayed really calm and keeping the young guys calm too in between the periods,” Nesbitt said.

“They’ve obviously been there before and it was good that we were able to pull it out.”

Kyle Bailey was the first to put the

Reds on the scoreboard, as he sniped one past the UdeM goalie in the third after a pass from Nesbitt.

“I heard somebody yelling, but it was a lucky pass,” Nesbitt said. “Bailey is a really smart player and he had the presence of mind to put it up top and not just shoot it, so, it was great goal.”

Later on the power play, Nesbitt scored, giving the V-Reds a 2-1 advantage against UdeM. “Just a great pass by Marc-Antoine, I

was just kind of sliding down the backdoor and he saw me, faked everybody out in the rink, including me almost,” Nesbitt said. “I almost didn’t handle the pass, and just kind of a lucky shot, went under his arm.”

This weekend, the UNB Varsity Reds will move down the hill to the Lady Beaverbrook rink to take on the STU Tommies in the “battle of the hill”, Friday night at 7 p.m.

Deep, harder, faster: Sex terms in sports Back of the Net K. Bryannah James Ok, after reading this a few of you are going to think I always have my mind in the gutter, and maybe I do. But let’s face it, all of us have chuckled, giggled or made a dirty joke following one of these great catch phrases heard from coaches or athletes.

First off, my favourite has to be curling.

During the Olympics, I had a grand-old time listening to people yell “hard” during curling matches. Seriously, I thought it was great.

It’s probably the only time outside of the bedroom you can yell hard continuously with both sides fighting for that finished result. I mean, who doesn’t want to get something rock hard in the right spot?

It seems sports terminology can always have some link to sex. I was watching a soccer game and I heard a coach yell, “Go deep and finish.” Naturally, I began to chuckle a little to myself, which resulted in one of those oh so famous droll stares from my friends, who eventually followed suit with laughter.

I find soccer can be the same way, I mean, I don’t know how many times I heard people yelling about grabbing their balls, getting deep or finishing. Don’t get me started on head and heading the ball.

So far the best one is when you’re supposed to drive to the net and penetrate.

Okay, I may sound a little immature now, but I bet a couple of people either nodded their heads or chuckled a little.

Let’s not forget about scoring. Fans love to throw their hands back in the air when they score. Well, this can happen in intimate settings too, can it not? Who doesn’t like to score once in a while? You don’t need

to be a champ on the court in order to accomplish that.

Now I’m not saying to throw your hands back in the air and do a victory lap, well, I hope no one does that.

Basketball is pretty entertaining too.

Whenever I hear about someone getting their hands on the ball and making a move, it’s almost too easy.

Hockey is great for sex terminology too.

We always hear about getting deep, getting your hand on the stick, moving faster, harder, and switching on and off.

Now, half way through writing this I decided to Google some terms from different sports, and I came across lacrosse, for all you lacrosse lovers out there, you probably already know what term I’m about to pull out, the box.

The definition for this rule was gold. “An area in the offensive zone: the ball cannot be out of the box for longer than 10 seconds.”

So basically, you need to get in and score

before you pull out. Yes, I went there.

Some other silly terms that stick out in lacrosse are ride and shaft. I may be getting ahead of myself here, but come on. Riding and shaft? It’s too easy. And for those of you who’re wondering, yes I have the maturity level of a 14-year-old.

The one that still gets me every time is the long snapper in football. I don’t even have to describe that one, just give it a moment and you’ll laugh. Maybe the tight-end received a pump-fake and went down and in for a long snapper.

But hey, if you can’t get the job done, it could be like baseball where you have a swing and a miss. But hopefully that doesn’t happen, because then there’s no fun in that.

Let’s move along before my mind gets the better of me, how about hookers. Now I’m not talking about the provocatively dressed Julia Roberts types. No, I’m talking about tight spandex, mouth guard and being hoisted up in the air by multiple people

to catch a ball.

And then you get to get down and dirty on the field while people jump on top of you to grab the ball. Intrigued? So am I. You have to love rugby.

But if you’re not into the whole multiple people thing, and I think most people aren’t, you can stick to tennis. I mean, they have The “V,” where you can serve or [be] service[d].

Or you can go a little old-school like at the horse track where you can jockey and/ or ride a stallion. Or ping-pong, you can receive when you play that little game.

Now, I’m going to finish – no pun intended - with this. This is the sex issue, so have fun, think outside the box, kick up your heels and enjoy the sexual nature of life - even if it means going balls deep and thinking about the sexual nature of sports terminology.

Women’s hoops anchor Men’s hoops thrashed on weekend bottom of AUS standings Sean O’Neill The Brunswickan

Sean O’Neill The Brunswickan UNB’s women’s basketball team continues to be scored against at an alarming rate, and it’s bumping them down to the bottom, of the AUS that is.

Last weekend the team hit the road for the first time in its AUS season and promptly got thrashed by the Saint Mary’s Huskies 86-64 and the Acadia Axewomen 88-72.

With the two losses, the Varsity Reds are anchored to the bottom of the AUS standings with a 0-4 record.

In each of its four games this season, the team has given up at least 80 points to the opposition, while only one other team, StFX, has given up more than 80 twice.

The team hasn’t won a game since it beat UPEI in a pre-season game on Oct. 9, and has lost 11 games in a row dating back to the exhibition games.

On Friday against Saint Mary’s, the V-Reds led by three after the first quarter but the Huskies exploded for 27 and 25 points in the next two periods, respectively to claim an 8264 victory.

Potential league MV P Justine Colley had a double-double for SMU with 28 points and 10 assists on a blistering 55 per cent shooting from the field. She leads the conference in scoring averaging 22.6 points a game on an outrageous 53 per cent shooting.

She’s second in the conference in assists with 5.2 a game. Laura Langille also had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, six of which were offensive, and Amanda Smith had no points but 16 boards and a whopping 11 offensive rebounds.

For the Reds, Emma Russell led the team in scoring with 21 points on 50 per cent shooting, and Claire Colborne added 13 points and 12 rebounds to the losing cause.

The next night in Wolfville against Acadia, UNB were down 25-10 after the first quarter and never recovered as it lost 88-72.

The Axewomen had four players score in double figures: Emma Duinker with 24, Stefanie Chapman with 19, and double-doubles from Jasmin Parent with 13 points and 11 boards, and Kristy Moore with 11 and 10.

Colborne scored 19 for the Reds to pace the team, Jordanne Holstein added 15 and Russell scored 14 points.

The Reds return to the f loor against the 2-1 Cape Breton University Capers (who are currently ranked sixth in the CIS national rankings, and some believe is the favorite to win the AUS this year) this weekend at the Currie Center.

The teams tip-off on Friday Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. and the next day at 1 p.m.

After a pair of exciting, edge-of-yourseat wins against Memorial to open the AUS season, one would think the good vibes would carry over to the Varsity Reds men’s basketball team’s next games against Saint Mary’s and Acadia.

But the sports cliché of momentum proved to be a false prophet again as UNB got pummeled on the road 10175 to the Huskies and 80-53 against the Axemen.

The losses drop the Reds to fourth in the AUS after the two four-point wins against the Seahawks put them on top after the opening weekend.

Against Saint Mary’s (who beat the Reds 82-78 in the pre-season at the Currie Center) UNB gave up a scorching 56 per cent shooting to the Huskies from the floor, including 30 points from three-land.

The Huskies didn’t need last year’s leading scorer Joey Haywood, who averaged 28.8 points a game and tried out for the NBA D-League this year, as it had four players in double figures.

Tony Fassett scored 29 and grabbed 11 rebounds; Brian Rouse dropped 25 points; and Miguel Pink and Riley Halpin had 15 and 11, respectively, off the bench.

Dan Quirion continued his great start to the season as he continued to lead the V-Reds with 15 points. Colin Swift, Seth Amoah, Alex DesRoches, and Michael Fosu all added 10 points to the Reds cause.

Owen Klassen led Acadia in scoring with 18 points and six rebounds, Tyler Scott added 14 points and grabbed seven boards, and Justin Boutlier added 10 points off the bench.

Quirion again led the team with 17 points, and Jordan Irvine came off the bench and added 11 points.

Irvine separated his pinkie finger the

week prior, against Memorial and sat the second game of that weekend, but played in both the Saint Mary’s and Acadia games.

The Reds return to floor on Nov. 25 and 26 against the Cape Breton University Capers, who have gone through a lot of turmoil since the sudden resignation of head coach Jim Charters on Nov. 1. CBU has started the season 1-2, splitting a two-game set with Dalhousie and losing to StFX. Tip-offs are Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.

Let’s put sex myths to bed: It’s time to learn the truth about sex

It’s time to ask the experts istead of six degrees of seperation. Putting the myths to bed.

together without knowing all of the facts. Two condoms are better than one, women don’t like porn and a cold shower is the best way to get rid of your .. ahem .. problem.

But how many of these rumours are true, and how many are, in fact, creating an unaware generation? It’s about time these sex myths were put to bed, once and for all.

Victoria Harris, an employee at the Sexual Health Centre located in the Student Union Building, helped decode some of these lies, and give students the truth behind the myth.

“Two condoms are better than one is one of the most popular myths,” Harris said.

“The materials rub up against each other and the extra friction will cause the condom to break.”

Some of the ways to prevent the condom from breaking, suggests Harris, is to use water-based products such as KY, Directs brand, or to go O’Naturale and use saliva too create a lubricant.

Another popular myth among those having sex is females are unable to get pregnant the first time you have sex. Although it’s a popular myth, it’s one of the most inaccurate.

“Female bodies are not all the same – textbooks say you release your egg on the 14th day of your cycle, but some women’s cycles are less and some are more,” Harris said.

“You never know when the egg is going to be released. There is no way to tell. From day one of having a period you are able to get pregnant.”

Not only is pregnancy an all-tooreal risk of having sex, but so are sexually transmitted infections. Many believe that if a visible sign of an STI is not present on a partner, there is no risk of catching anything. “‘I can’t see anything on my part-

ner so I can’t get anything,’ is very false. No visible sores, such a cold sores, are present but still raise the risk of being transmitted herpes; it is known as asymptomatic sloughing,” Harris said.

With the availability of the Internet, campus libraries and sexual health centres, students have any knowledge they desire at their fingertips. Many websites are available with information to any question that may be asked.

“Go to reputable websites such as sexualityandyou.ca. It’s put on by the Society of Obstetrician and Gynaecologists of Canada. It’s any information you can ever want on birth control or STIs, or sexual health in general,” Harris said.

“It has links to other reputable websites. You want things that are being backed up by scholarly information, not by your cousin’s boyfriend’s best friend’s neighbour.”

The need to create an aware generation is to prevent scenarios which are preventable. By using condoms, taking birth control daily, and getting tested on a regular basis, people are practicing some of the many ways to take preventative measures. It is not solely up to the female, or to the male, but on both to take the necessary precautions to have safe sex.

So please, take the old adage to heart, don’t be silly and wrap your willy.

Women’s v-ballers struggling to win Heather Uhl Staff Reporter The Varsity Reds womens’ volleyball team was unable to shake their losing streak last weekend in the two home games at the Currie Center.

The Reds lost to the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Friday and then to the Acadia A xewomen on Saturday, leading to disappointment across the board. The V-Reds remain in last place in AUS standings with no wins and seven losses.

“It’s tough, we’re in uncharted waters especially for our program and especially for all the girls out there,” head coach John Richard said. “Our fourth, third and second-year girls aren’t used to being where they’re at and it’s new for all of us. It’s been a long time since I’ve been here.”

“But hey, no one’s going to feel sorry for us. You look at the success we’ve had for the last half-dozen years. I mean, no one’s going to feel sorry for our program, so we just got to keep on working.”

The women’s volleyball team was the AUS champions for the 20102011 and 2007-2008 seasons. The V-Reds have consistently made AUS playoffs since 2005.

None of that showed over last weekend. Friday’s game was a fourset game, with UNB winning only one set. The final score of Friday’s being 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-10, 258). The Saint Mary’s Huskies tie the Dalhousie Tigers for first place in the standings.

Saturday’s game was almost in the V-Reds hands, with flashes of the winning team they once were. It was a solid five-set match against the Axewomen with the first set going to Acadia at 25-27.

The second set almost felt like a completely different team took to the floor for the Varsity Reds. More than once there was a difference of five points or higher between the V-Reds and the Axewomen, with the V- Reds taking the set 25-19.

“A couple things fall apart,” Varsity Red Emma Hunt explained. “At times, communication on servereceives isn’t there and that’s what we need.”

Things derailed in the fourth set, where the Axewomen won 25-11 following a substitution to tie the game.

Acadia went on to nab the fifth set with a 15-7 win.

“I thought we got undisciplined late in the match,” coach Richard said on Saturday’s game. “I want the girls to be aggressive and when you’re aggressive you’re going to make some errors - and I’m okay with that. If

you’re making an error out of that fact you’re trying to be so aggressive in certain situations that you can’t execute.”

“I’d rather keep the foot on the gas and try and execute than try to play safe.”

Coach Richard said it was the attempts to play safe that more errors were made.

“You know, it’s probably going to be ugly, and I thought tonight might have been the one,” coach Richard said. “We’re not going to walk in tomorrow or next week to win 3-0 easy and someone’s going to hand something to us. We’re going to have to work for it and it might be ugly the first time.”

Luke Gallant discusses his experiences at UNB

Luke Gallant isn’t just an all-star on the ice. He’s also an academic All-Canadian.

Andrew Meade / The Brunswickan Nick Murray The Brunswickan Walking into the UNB Varsity Reds hockey lounge beneath the stands of the Aitken Centre, the first thing you notice is the history enshrined on the walls.

Through mounted and framed

newspaper clippings, past players and coaches are forever remembered for their hard work and dedication to the UNB men’s hockey program.

At the end of this season, defenceman Luke Gallant’s CIS eligibility will expire after five years in a Varsity Reds uniform, and will no doubt be remembered as one of the teams great

defencemen.

Gallant isn’t just a good hockey player though, he’s also a hardworking student.

During his tenure on the blue line, he has helped UNB to two national championships and earned CIS tournament MVP honours last year. Let’s not forget how he got the

championship-winning goal.

He has also been honoured as a CIS All-Canadian, as well as a CIS academic All-Canadian, and has won both the Ross “Punch” Walker award and the Michael Cavanagh award.

Though looking back on his time at UNB, Gallant’s most cherished memory is last year’s championship here on home ice.

“It’s really indescribable,” Gallant said, “after that win and coming into the dressing room and seeing all the family, friends, alumni, coaches, and my teammates, and seeing the look on their faces after we won on home ice was pretty special and something I’ll never forget.”

Gallant is optimistic that the team can repeat on home ice this year as UNB once again hosts the CIS men’s hockey championship at the Aitken Centre in March. However, he admits that even for the top team in the country, no championship comes easily.

“It is really tough to do,” admits Gallant, “one thing we’re seeing this year is that no matter who we play, they’re going to come out and play us tough.”

“But to go back-to-back, like only a handful of teams have done, would be pretty special, not only for our fans but for the program in general.”

Being his final year at UNB, Gallant has simply focused on enjoying it as much as he can. He is currently working on his MBA and as aforementioned was named a CIS academic All-Canadian.

Though he hasn’t given much thought about what’s next after this year, the main focus for him is in getting his MBA and striving for a fifth national title, which would be his third.

“When you’re a player here you get caught up in a lot of white noise, and I’m really just enjoying the experience with the guys, because it is all about my teammates and the coaching staff,” Gallant said.

“I know for sure that even if something comes up, I’m going to finish

my education first because that’s why I came back, to finish my MBA.” Though Ga lla nt ad m its t hat throughout his time here, there have been many people who have impacted him, one lesson he will always remember comes from coach Gardiner MacDougall who said, “You’re a person for a lot longer than you are a hockey player.”

“I think that over my five years I’ve really been able to grow my work ethic, and probably most importantly my attitude,” he said.

“Coming out from the QMJHL, you have this idea that things are a lot easier in this league (CIS), but I feel over the last couple years that by growing a leadership role my attitude has improved in respect to trying to find the positives in everything.”

In parting, one message Gallant would like to leave to fans, specifically the younger hockey players out there, is to appreciate the opportunities given.

“I’m fortunate to work with a couple minor-hockey teams every week and to the younger players, if I had my time back,” Gallant said.

“I would really appreciate the ice time that’s given to me and I think a lot of younger players don’t realize how hard their parents work to get them on the ice.”

Although many people may believe the team has things easier because they’re a championship team, it’s not necessarily the case.

“I think that everything we have has been earned over the years from past alumni who paved the way for us.

There’s a lot of hard work that people don’t see behind the scenes for why we’ve been successful.”

“There’s so many people that I could thank numerous amounts of times and I’m so glad with my decision to come to UNB. I came here to win a national championship, but to win two, and a chance for a third is unbelievable.”

You can’t catch STIs from a toilet seat: Some myths are just silly Heather Uhl Staff Reporter There’s a lot of myths about sex, and despite the amusement factor they might have, the majority of them are false.

The myth that if you wash a condom, you can reuse it prompted something of a yell from the UNB Sexuality Centre.

“NO,” UNB Sexuality Centre coordinator Jason Retallik shouted, “condoms can never be reused under any circumstances.”

Condoms, Retallik explained, are designed to be used once; to reuse one is to increase the chances of the condom breaking.

In the case of aphrodisiacs and substances that increase sexual desire, anything that ‘gets you in the mood’ is technically an aphrodisiac, Retallik said.

“If you’re turned on by pickles, a pickle is an aphrodisiac.”

Though there is ongoing scientific debate on the validity of chemical aphrodisiacs, there are no conclusive reports indicating there is such a thing.

Other false myths are that men want to have sex more than women (that’s all personal preference and varies person by person), masturbation gives you hairy palms (false, false, false) and that having a girl on top during sexual intercourse and urination afterwards will avoid

pregnancy.

“The vagina is constructed in such a way as to guide sperm towards the cervix, which is the entryway to the uterus,” Ratallik said. “Being on top, jumping up and down, urinating - none of that is going to make a difference.”

“The only way you’re going to avoid pregnancy is by using proper birth control methods. And the only way that is a hundred per cent effective is abstinence.”

Side note: a man’s genital will not explode because he doesn’t have sex.

Vasocongestion (Blue Balls) is when the vessels in the penis and around the testicles fill with blood, causing cramping and mild aches. It also isn’t serious and can be fixed through sexual release or just waiting until it goes away.

Blue Balls is not a reason to pressure someone into sex, Retallik warned.

Also, women do not always orgasm during sexual intercourse.

Mostly because the women’s center for sexual pleasure is the clitoris and located outside of the vagina and is not stimulated by most forms of sexual penetration. Sorry boys.

“Through normal use of a toilet seat, you will not catch STI from them,” Retallik said on the myth that STIs can transfer from toilet seats.

Using proper protection during oral sex is important, Retallik explained, as it is possible to transfer

If there are no condoms handy, avoid being creative. “You can’t use tinfoil as a condom. Zip-lock bags don’t work,” Retallik stressed.

“Don’t do that.”

The myth that great sex comes easy is just a myth. “Sex is a lot of work. Just like anything else, being good at sex requires practice.

Everyone has different preferences.

To be good at sex you have to learn

your partner’s preferences, what feels good, because it will differ between all partners,” Retallik said.

“Being comfortable and able to communicate with your partner is going to be the key to good sex.”

It’s time to have a healthy mind-set, which will lead to positive body image Tova Payne The Brunswickan Our society has done a remarkable job at making us feel like we’re not good enough as we are. The constant bombardment of magazines, TV commercials and the Hollywood ideal perpetuates Western societal standards of what we should look like, dress like and consume.

In the same breath, there are deeply conflicting messages. If you look at most magazines, often you will see a slim man or woman featuring one product and the next page will advertise a food item which is not always necessarily healthy.

With this constant influx of mixed messages which affect our brain in a deep neural way, it’s hard to decide for yourself what constitutes a healthy body image.

Although this affects more women than men, men are certainly not immune, and with the influx of malegeared magazines, there’s an increase in male body disorders or dissatisfaction.

Take a moment to let go of all the messages you’ve been programmed to believe about the way you should look, if for just a moment, and think about how you actually feel about your body.

How do you feel?

Do you feel good in your body? Are

you healthy by medical standards, i.e. blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate, hormone levels; are they normal?

Do you like how you look in the mirror but your mind tells you, you’re still not good enough?

It’s easy to tell you to just switch your mind, but it doesn’t happen so easily.

If you read last week’s article, you will know that it is possible to re-wire your mental conditioning.

You can re-wire how you view your body and what you think. However, it probably won’t happen just by reading this article.

It may take a lot of hard mental and emotional work to start re-conditioning and re-wiring your brain from the years of perpetual messages, from the media telling you that you’re not good enough as you are.

You know, when you sit down in front of the TV your body slides into a hypnotic state; usually your physical body begins to relax and your eyeballs don’t move. This is what happens under hypnosis and meditation.

The difference is, in hypnosis and meditation you are either clearing your mind, or re-conditioning old habit patterns to free you from the negative thoughts and habits that bring you down.

On the contrary, when you watch TV, you are in the hypnotic state be-

And, it’s no wonder such a huge percentage of people have a negative body image; we are constantly being hypnotized to believe a certain ideal is the only form of beauty and happiness.

If you’re like most people, you’re always trying to live up to the impossible ideal, one that isn’t even healthy. You can use mental imagery, meditation and affirmations to try to re-wire your brain and its conditioned belief that you are not perfect the way you are.

It`s a very interesting phenomenon,

but if you begin with the practice of acceptance and gratitude to your body, the natural next step is to want to take care of it, and when you listen to your body and feed it a well-balanced diet and exercise regularly, your body will naturally slip into the perfect healthy size for your bones, muscles and frame.

Take the steps to lead a healthy life and in the process, practice accepting yourself as you are and thanking your body for all that it can do.
