Student turn-out low at budget consultation

Cherise Letson News Editor Student turnout was low at last Thursday’s Fredericton pre-budget consultation at the Forest Hill Conference Centre.

UNBSU president, Andrew Martel, went to the microphone to give suggestions to the minister during the comments portion of the meeting. He was the only student union representative from both UNB and STU who spoke.

“As you know, and everyone else in this room knows, students here are the future of New Brunswick, and should be seen as an investment to the province,” said Martel, during the comment period.

Martel told finance minister, Blaine Higgs, post-secondary education (PSE) in the province is becoming less accessible and affordable to youth. He also expressed the UNBSU’s worry that the upcoming four-year funding plan for universites will mean tuition hikes.

He told Higgs proper financing to the universities would help prevent this.

“This is something we as students are recommending to you and your government; that we see proper financing to the operating grants of the universities so that the tuition levels over the next four years and hopefully in the future after that, don’t go up,” said Martel.

Higgs responded by asking Martel if there are opportunities to rethink the educational model.

“The reason I ask is simply because everything can’t require more money,” said Higgs. “If we have models, we need to think about around the world, around the country, it’s ‘How do we share the best practices, and how do we start to work towards that?’ as opposed to funding the same”.

Martel said though the universities should look at where their money is going, the government needs to show more interest in PSE. “We also need more investment,

Their main concern was the rising tuition costs of the province, although they were prepared to discuss the issues surrounding health care and shale gas as well.

“We’re trying to come together as people who are concerned by all these issues – which I think [includes] everyone in New Brunswick – to start talking about how we are going to organize around them,” Miller said.

According to Statistics Canada, tuition in New Brunswick is the fourth highest in the country, a fact that’s not overlooked by event’s organizers.

“It’s obvious that student debt is high and students carry a burden in this province, which has one of the highest tuition rates in Canada in terms of post-secondary education,” Miller

said. “We are against tuition hikes in all post-secondary institutions in New Brunswick. So that for us is a starting point, which then means we have a mandate to work against tuition hikes.”

They plan to support this mandate with strategies that involve getting students to take action.

“We came here tonight and we’re going to keep using different strategies to make it clear to the government that we don’t want tuition hikes,” said Miller. “We definitely call students to action; it’s time to do more than just write letters and speak at consultations.

[Instead we need to] try to get out on the streets and make our voices heard more strongly.”

Despite the poor attendance of Thursday night’s consultation, the Students for Direct Democracy is still optimistic about making their message heard.

“I see this as one of the first steps in getting students more organized and more mobilized, and ready for action,” Miller said. “If we want to protect our right to education, we’re going to have

UNB wants to know about your health

UNB counselling services are looking to learn about your health.

Dr. Rice Fuller, director of counselling services, has set out to learn more about the health of UNB students by launching a health survey that was sent out to half of the UNB student body, on Monday, Feb. 11.

“We have no data on the health of the student population as a whole, and this survey will provide us with that information,” said Fuller. “Because we have no data, there may be things out there that students are struggling with that we aren’t aware of.”

The survey will consist of several sections asking questions related to personal safety, physical health, mental health, sexual health, substance abuse, diet and exercise.

“There are questions like, ‘Do you wear a helmet when you ride a bicycle?’ or, ‘Do you use a condom during sex?’” said Fuller.

Some questions will be on more serious issues.

“There are a couple of questions about sexual assault and domestic violence, which we currently have no data on,” said Fuller. “Last year, we only had one reported sexual assault, which doesn’t add up when compared to other campuses, so this survey will provide excellent data on these issues.”

Due to the nature of some questions, students who do the survey will not be required to answer all of them.

“There will be questions regarding illegal activity, and some questions may make students uncomfortable, so students do not need to answer all questions,” said Fuller.

Dr. Fuller is hoping to learn several things from this survey. He said the results from the survey will provide insight on what health issues are affecting students right now.

“This [survey] will help identify the most important health problems students are struggling with and which ones are affecting their academic

“I like having hard data on things.

If we have that, it will make it easier to argue for resources to be put towards whatever problems show up as impacting both students and their academic performance.”

Counselling services anticipates

working with other departments on campus, as the results will suggest certain interventions that may require help from student health, the nursing department, the psychology department and even the kinesiology department.

As with many surveys, participation is often an issue; therefore, there will be an incentive in place to encourage

those asked to fill out the survey. Those who complete the survey will have their name entered into a draw for a $50 gift card to the Regent Mall.

Students who are asked to participate in the survey on Feb. 11 will have three weeks to complete the survey.

VP Internal’s resignation shakes up council Cherise Letson News Editor The resignation of former UNBSU vice-president internal, Mostafa Shaker, shook discussion during council last Sunday.

Shaker resigned via email Jan. 5, for the reason of studying abroad in Singapore.

Though he claims he knew he was accepted into the program a while before, he just made the decision to go over the Christmas break.

However, new information was re-

vealed to council that Shaker returned his office key to the SUB office before the holiday break. He also left a transition report for his replacement on his desk before the break.

He also sent his resignation email the day after the payday for the executives.

Since there was less than four months left in his term, the rest of the UNBSU executives decided to not fill his position and divide Shaker’s tasks amongst themselves.

general election or bi-election for the next four years.

Shaker plans to graduate in October.

“He knew before he left that he was not coming back,” said Ness.

“His letter contradicts that, saying that he thought ‘long and hard over the holidays’ about whether he would take this opportunity or not, and it just came up.”

“I think that is extraordinarily unprofessional and inconsiderate to especially the executive colleagues, as well as the entire council and the student body.”

Law representative, Oliver GormanAsal said though he agreed what Shaker did was wrong, it’s not the UNBSU’s place to decide who can run in elections.

“That’s what the voters are there to decide, and that’s surely going to come up if he decides to run for anything again,” said Gorman-Asal. “I don’t think it’s the role of this council to decide who can and cannot become an elected official in this university.”

Residence representative, Alex Walsh, brought up the fact Shaker probably won’t be coming back to Fredericton. He said banning Shaker from running in UNBSU elections overlooks the bigger issue.

“Is that really solving an issue, which

overall is… any of the executives could just bail at any point?” said Walsh. “Or should we have them sign some sort of a contract or whatnot?”

Currently, there is no by-law stating any consequences for an executive resigning. Chantel Whitman, vicepresident student services, said revisions to the by-laws were possible.

“Council can do something about that,” said Whitman. “We can change the by-laws or put in policy; it’s doable.”

The motion itself failed. However, council passed a motion to send the issue of executives’ resignation to be examined by the policy committee for recommendations.

A response to “UNB’s investment portfolio” and “Corporate interests are not student interests” both published Feb. 5.

Dear Editor, A recent editorial on the university’s investment practices brought to mind a line from the famous funeral speech in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar: “The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.” The article ridiculously equates the university endowments system with outright collaboration and collusion with some of the most “unethical” companies you can imagine.

For example, by investing in Lockheed Martin, “UNB now has a vested interest in the continuance of war and conflict in the world.” Of course; I hear Eddy Campbell is preparing his trip to Mali now, hoping to prolong the conflict and generate some extra cash for the university. Focusing on the bad while ignoring the good is just as short sighted now as it was in Shakespeare’s time, and it’s something we should all keep in mind.

The fact of the matter is that the endowment system allows the university to help those who really need it at no cost to other students or the province. If it wasn’t for a UNB scholarship, I wouldn’t be able to afford university, and there are hundreds of people like me who apparently “have the same interests as the corporations UNB has placed its donations”. I appreciate the clarification: I was never sure what I favoured more, educating people or Halliburton’s

balance sheet, but now I know I hold them both equally dear, and far above a habitable planet or a better world.

Maybe I know that beggars can’t be choosers; as an engineering student, I can’t make the world a better place until I get an education. If that means Halliburton profits a little, well, two out of three ain’t bad.

If our investments have turned UNB’s student body into greedy corporate slaves, I’m the last to notice. Saying that means ignoring all of the worthwhile activities around campus, like the first-ever UNB Relay for Life, which raised $31,000 for cancer last week. Clearly, there must be more to the spirit of a university than the state of its investment portfolio.

Personally, I’m for ethical investment, if you can get the right return, but I think that sacrificing the university’s scholarships on the altar of ethical investment is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

The irony is that the call for students to change UNB’s investment practices would never work if we were the corporate shills that we’ve apparently become by accepting endowment money.

I hope that someday I can return the favour by giving a nice, fat endowment cheque to UNB. If it gets invested ethically, great; if it goes to some “objectionable” (a.k.a apparently oil and natural resources, but that argument is a whole other letter) company whose higher return helps me get even one more student through UNB, even better. I think the moral quality of UNB graduates makes that an investment whose return you can’t measure.

Nothing says love like a chubby gnome in a toga.

Yes, yes, I know. It’s a cherub. (Well, technically a putto.) But plop a pointy red hat on one and it will fit right in on your lawn.

And this time of year, everywhere you look, these figures are creeping around on cards and perching on store displays, flapping their wings like so many birds.

The figure of Cupid was once a dignified Roman god, yet today is depicted as a silly infantile archer. What’s stranger is that we’ve come to associate this depiction with romantic love.

Not just a bit, but enough to power a multi-billion dollar February industry.

So how did we come to this point?

More importantly, how did Cupid?

Well, to start, he wasn’t always a flying gnome.

Cupid’s earliest roots lie in the Greek god Eros. To Hesiod, writing circa 700 BCE, Eros was the primeval force of attraction that bound even the elements. This extended to sexual desire, but not to emotional love. We

don’t see Eros as a winged youth until later myths depict him as the son of Aphrodite and Ares. This second version of Eros is a mischievous, juvenile – not infantile – god of desire.

Now, the Romans loved to steal things from the Greeks. Certainly gods, but they didn’t limit themselves there, and sometimes, borrowed entire cities. And when the Romans stole things they often changed them, renaming cities here, recasting gods there.

So they shoved the newer attributes of Greek Eros into the Roman Cupido (meaning “desire”), the boy-god of love, son of Venus and Mars. This was the final moulding of the Classical figure of Cupid. And the clay was fired, so to speak, when Cupid appeared thus in Vergil’s momentous and popular work, the Aeneid.

And for our intent here, the figure laid as such for centuries, until the Renaissance dug it up.

It’s interesting to note that when things are dug up after a thousand years, the people doing the digging will reside in a far different cultural landscape from the thing being dug up. There will be new roles for old ideas, but at the same time, new forms into which they must fit.

People of the Renaissance were in-

deed interested in the Classical world, so they fit Classical figures into their own ideologies.

And it’s a widely known fact that if you have a square block to go into a circular hole… you trim it.

So they made Cupid a cherub.

Well, actually a putto, which is just a cherub in a secular context. What?

Don’t look at me. Some people insist.

And ever since Valentine’s Day cards became popular in the 18th century, and later mass-produced, he’s been fair game to satirize, humourize, and cartoon-ize.

So, Gods change as our perception of them changes. It’s the same for us as for Renaissance Italians, ancient Romans, and ancient Greeks.

Just because a figure is written down doesn’t mean it can’t be dug up and reshaped. And once dug up, it becomes a slave to popular whim and necessity.

If we need a figure to flap around and shoot love arrows, we find the closest thing we can and we nab it.

So, what happened to Cupid?

Well, we did.

Canoe Canoodling The New Position Sarah Vannier

Last week, the results of an online poll looking at the sexual habits of 1,003 Canadians were released. Although the poll was done by the Environics Research Group on behalf of Playtex, and probably doesn’t line up to the more rigorous standards of peer-reviewed research, the results have sparked some interesting conversation about sex, north of the border.

The poll included questions about number of sexual partners, frequency of sex, and preferred time of day for sex.

However, the piece of information that appears to be getting the most amount of attention is that eight per cent of Canucks have had sex in a canoe.

Let’s do a little math: We can roughly estimate that there are 12 million Canadians between the ages of 18 and 49, which was the age range of people in the poll. Eight percent of them have done the horizontal tipsy tango. That means that there are approximately 960,000 people strolling around our home and native land with a smug look on their face.

And unless you are one of the adventurous eight per cent, I know you are wondering the exact same thing I wondered: How does one go about having sex in a canoe?

Fortunately, the Internet has the answer to everything! One quick Google search later, and I was reading

Cosmo’s instructions on how to master the “Canoe Canoodle”.

Basically, you need to lie down side to side, the length of the canoe.

Distributing your weight, and staying low, is the key to keeping your canoe upright. For heterosexual couples, Cosmo recommends the good old spork position (i.e. spooning, but with a point). Remember to avoid sudden movements, enjoy the rocking of the water, and keep an eye out for old men fishing and children strapped to water skis.

If you don’t feel like waiting until spring to try out something new between the sheets, here is another option: the coital alignment technique.

Although the coital alignment technique sounds kind of something like you need to have done to your car every 6000 kilometers, it’s actually a sexual position that works wonders for heterosexual couples. The position is a variation on missionary position that increases stimulation of the clitoris. Considering that most women need some sort of clitoral stimulation to experience an orgasm, the coital alignment technique is highly recommended by sex educators and therapist for increasing female sexual pleasure.

So how does this whole thing work?

First, you start off in standard missionary position with the man on top of

the women. Then the man shifts his body up slightly, along her body, until his penis is pointing downward. The tip of the penis should still be inside of the woman, but the base of the penis will be against the clitoris. As the man moves upwards, the female partner can tilt her hips slightly (think arching your back with ass to bed and belly button to ceiling). As he moves back down, she can tilt her hips up towards him.

This might feel a little unusual at first. In this position, there is more rocking back and forth together, and less thrusting in and out. It might take a little practice, but once people figure it out they tend to become fans.

Let’s talk about sex, baby!

UNB’s Sexuality Centre is a resource centre and safe space for students regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or personal preference. Bronté James / The Brunswickan Heather Uhl News Reporter The Sexuality Centre is having a week of events to talk about sex.

UNB’s annual Sexuality Awareness Week kicked off on Monday, Feb. 11.

“One thing I really want people to know is that although it’s a week that we’re talking about important stuff and sharing a lot of information, it’s also going to be a really fun week,” said Conor Falvey, coordinator of the UNB Sexuality Centre.

The week features guest speakers, a scavenger hunt, sex talks and free condoms.

“The main goal is to get people

talking about sexuality in an open and understanding way, even if it’s only for that week,” said Falvey. “[It is to] remind people that sexuality is an important part of most people’s lives. There are benefits to being able to talk about it openly and to think about it.”

Falvey said the week has a three-fold purpose.

“It’s to provide education to people on campus about sexual health and sexuality related topics,” said Falvey.

“It’s to promote a respect for and celebration of sexual diversity, different sexual orientations, different attitudes towards sexuality, that kind of thing, and to make people aware of the re-

sources on campus for anyone who has questions about sexuality.”

For the last two years, the week has been held during the fall semester. This year, the week was moved to the winter semester.

“I’m personally really pleased it’s in the second semester because it gives us more time to organize a really good slate of events,” said Falvey.

While the Sexuality Awareness Week only comes along once in the academic year, the Sexuality Centre is available all year round.

“The centre is an awesome place,” said Falvey. “Part of its purpose is to be an awesome place.”

“A big part of what we do is to

provide a safe, welcoming space for students, faculty and staff; mainly students. A safe space for everyone on campus regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or personal preferences.”

Run by students, the centre provides information about sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, or where other resources are on campus, in a safe and welcoming environment.

“It’s a resource centre; a place for accessing information,” said Falvey.

The centre does not provide counselling, but can direct people to the appropriate resource on campus. Other events that centre puts on are workshops and games’ nights about sexual

health, sexual orientation and other related issues.

Falvey said a lot of people feel sex isn’t something they can have a discussion about. There’s secrecy around people’s sexual behaviours, and it’s not considered a topic to talk about.

“There’s still a lot of embarrassment around talking about sexuality for a lot of people, which is fair. People have different ideas of privacy and intimacy and what they want to share of themselves,” said Falvey.

“But that embarrassment can lead to a feeling of having no where to go if you have questions.”

Poster campaign raises awareness about sexual aggression Voices Against Sexual Agression is lauching a poster campaign during UNB’s Sexuality Awareness Week.

They say that a picture is worth 1000 words, and that’s the basic idea for the Voices Poster Campaign.

The eight posters are scattered around UNB and have a different person with a different message on them about how they might be feeling if sexual assault did happen – hypothetically.

Amanda Worrell, the Voices Against Sexual Aggression (VOICES) Coordinator said this campaign is about getting a conversation started through reactions from people.

“I saw a video clip from the States over the summer, and it really caught my attention,” said Worrell.

“I thought if people saw those it might get a reaction from people and would be the best way to start a conversation.”

Worrell thinks it is a problem that although sexual assault does happen and is an issue, not a lot of people want

to talk about it.

Worrell also said she would like to spread awareness about what VOICES is, because not a lot of students know much about what resources they have.

“Doing presentations, I found that a lot of people don’t even know what sexual assault is or how to ask for consent,” said Worrell.

Worrell defines sexual assault as anything from non-consensual kissing, fondling, or touching, to unwanted intercourse. She said it usually happens between two people who know each other and are in a familiar setting.

If something happens on campus, Worrell suggests going to UNB Security or Student Affairs and Services.

There is also the Fredericton Sexual Assault Crisis Centre, which has a 24hour hotline to call.

Although the volunteers at VOICES are not counsellors, students can still stop by during weekdays to just talk or get information.

Football and basketball... with a twist

If you aren’t getting people in the stands for your basketball games, why not make the uniforms, BIKINIS! Since becoming a professional league, the WNBA has struggled to get fans through the door, with last season coming as an all time low for attendance, where they averaged a meager 7.457 fans per game league wide.

Cue Cedric Mitchell and AJ McArthur. Based off the success of the Legends Football League (or better known as the Lingerie Football League), they decided to market women’s basketball in the same manner.

The league is set to begin this June with seven teams in six cities. Helping the cause is Atlanta Peaches player, Deiondra Sanders, daughter of Pro Football Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders.

There has been a lot of hype surrounding this league, despite it not yet having played a game.

The LFL, on the other hand, is entering their fourth season, and has had so much success that they have effectively expanded to Canada, and plans to expand to Australia and Europe. The Canadian league has plans of expanding to six teams this following season. The LFL has done one hell of a job with its league since its inception.

The website is very well done, including stats and bios of each player, from each team, and team sites. They even moved away from what made them famous,

by dropping the lingerie from their league name and renaming it “Legends Football League”.

The dress code you ask?

Well, for the basketball league, it is similar to the “Olympic Volleyball uniforms”, while the LFL has shoulder pads, elbow pads, kneepads, hockey helmets with visors, and bras and panties to go along with garters.

Prior to this past week, I had never even watched a highlight of scantily clad women playing one of my favourite sports. Having watched some LFL highlights, that sport is badass, and if they ever find themselves heading to eastern Canada, you best believe I’m going to check it out.

Both of these leagues smell of shame and desperation, and why shouldn’t they? The WNBA is damn near extinction, and outside of the Olympics, it’s pretty much impossible for women to prosper on a big stage. As awful as it is, this is the only way for women’s sport to succeed on a professional level, because it will put people in the seats.

It’s a simple concept – sex sells. These leagues are going to get the majority of natural sports enthusiasts on top of all those spectators who will be hoping for a free show via a wardrobe malfunction.

The sad reality of this whole concept is, for the Sam Gordons of this world (YouTube her), the LFL is probably going to be the only place she can look forward to playing football on a professional level, but no matter how much you spin it, she will have to sell a little dignity to do it.

I remember walking past a Victoria’s Secret as a small child and being particularly traumatized by their display of apron-themed lingerie in the window.

Keeping in the spirit of things that your grandmother might not have seen coming, the UNB Sexuality Centre has organized a workshop titled Not Your Grandma’s Safe Sex Talk, as part of Sexuality Awareness Week.

“It’s a kind of interactive workshop by a presenter from AIDS New Brunswick,” said Conor Falvey, Sexuality Centre coordinator.

“The reason it’s not your grandma’s sex talk is because, rather than just being your standard safe sex for straight couples in the missionary position, it’s also designed to be inclusive of same sex couples, people with multiple

partners, people who aren’t monogamous, people who are trans or intersex, people who are into kink or BDSM: sexual behaviour that has safety issues associated with it that doesn’t normally get talked about; it’s designed to be as inclusive as possible,” she said.

Falvey said that these workshops are becoming increasingly common on university campuses, and address a real demand on the part of the students.

The presentation will include the basics on risk factors, boundaries and consent, but will also include lots of practical information.

“There’s going to be a lot of room for discussion and for questions and answers,” said Falvey.

“Hopefully, the presentation will respond to the needs and interests of the actual people who attend.”

The allure of the “flow”

Looking around the dressing room, I’ve noticed an epidemic that is rapidly spreading throughout the sacred realm of hockey. No, it’s not Athlete’s Foot, blisters, or chronic body odour; it’s something that can be found both on and off the ice, both under helmets and hats, or let loose to be tossed around in the wind. This epidemic is known as “flow”.

What is flow anyway?

You know that kid that shows up to class fifteen minutes late every day and clearly hasn’t showered, but has his long hair slicked back underneath his ball cap? You know that kid who looks like he is skating down the ice at an incredible speed because his hair is flapping in the breeze from beneath his helmet? Or maybe even that kid who has been trying to ‘wheel’ you while his hair is more silky-smooth than his pickup lines?

Yeah, that’s flow.

Some people find this look unattractive. These seldom few, however,

are the minority. It turns out that many ladies love the look of flow, and though it is not mandatory, if the flow belongs to a good-looking guy, it only heightens his level of attractiveness.

Fourth year science student, Chantal Drost, gives us some insight into how and why many girls find this look particularly captivating.

“Well, you know, I’ve always liked decently long hair on guys anyway, and when the little wings stick out of their helmet, I just think that’s adorable,” said Drost.

Fifth year arts student, Chantel Whitman, agrees with Drost. She also feels that flow is a good asset. However, she feels, “Flow is only attractive on hot guys.” It’s not all in the flow, in her opinion. Unlike Drost, Whitman likes the flow to be “underneath a hat for sure, and as long as it’s washed and not sweaty.” Clearly, the washing of the flow is a necessity when it comes to attracting the babes.

I took it upon myself to dig deeper, and to get the opinion of someone who actually has flow. This god of flow, or “Flow-Seidon”, is none other than Mike Stevens, of Neill House.

“Its not just hair, it’s a part of you.

You didn’t just wake up one day and decide you’ll have flow,” said Stevens. “It took time, care and patience, through the early, bad stages. It can be your best friend or your worst friend, depending on how it falls that day.”

Stevens feels that the ladies are attracted to it because, “they understand the time and effort it took to grow it, and it gives them something to run their fingers through.”

“It has attracted a new crowd of ladies,” said Stevens, when asked if his flow has attracted any new ladies, “but it all comes down to how the flow is that day.”

As some girls are shy, Stevens admitted that he doesn’t get many verbal compliments, but he concluded that their eyes say it all. “When I take my hat off and give the flow a stroke, I can see their eyes light up, and that’s the only compliment I need,” said Stevens.

There you have it; although it’s not all in the flow, it plays a huge role in picking up girls. Don’t underestimate it. Like Mike Stevens said, it takes time and effort, but the finished product is rewarding.

Are you hetero-sexist? (Hint: you probably are.)

Even if you knew the answers to all of these questions, stop and think.

Chances are, most of these words are not a part of your everyday thought process or vocabulary. According to Sophie Cormier, coordinator of the Safe Spaces program at UNB, they probably should be.

“Safe spaces is a program that asks

for people to put stickers [that identify a location as a Safe Space] on the doors of their offices, and especially in residence,” Cormier explained.

“When people put the sticker on, it shows that this is a space where no one’s going to discriminate and that people there are aware of the issues in society about sexual and gender diversities.

Really, it’s just to have this message that UNB is an inclusive campus and we don’t accept discrimination for sexual orientation.”

Safe Spaces will be running a workshop as part of Sexual Awareness week. It will include the basics and definitions, but will also be very interactive. Cormier says that, while UNB

is progressing, we’re not yet at the point where sexual and gender minorities feel automatically included, even if discrimination is not the population’s intention.

“There’s still discrimination out there,” she said.

“People don’t get beaten up; you don’t see physical marks as much as you did before, but the thing is there’s a lot of psychological discrimination going on. People that are trying to come out, they’re coming out because society doesn’t accept it yet, and because we always assume that everyone’s heterosexual and cisgendered; it creates a problem.”

Cormier wishes that people who

don’t know or even particularly care about the issues surrounding gender and sexual diversity would come out to her workshop.

“How do you bring them to those workshops, to make them care, to make them realize that they can change little things that’ll have a huge impact in the end?” she asked.

Food might do it. For the next Safe Spaces Workshop, a full lunch will be provided. Cormier hopes that this will bring people to liven up the discussion.

She’s never had negative experiences at a workshop, and hopes that people will open up with creative, candid responses.

For example, a student at a previous

workshop once suggested that pansexuality is the sexuality of Peter Pan. “I was like, I need to remember this one,” said Cormier, who alluded to the incident on a workshop poster.

“I think people don’t know what’s offending and what’s not, so they’re really closed down and they don’t want to ask questions, but really, it’s not really a big deal. It’s fun to have stuff like that and to just laugh about it.”

The next Safe Spaces Workshop will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 12-1 p.m. in SUB room 103.

I joined their ranks for the sheer spectacle of Beyonce’s half-time show. While undoubtedly impressed by her performance, what caught my attention most was the choice of costuming.

Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle were dressed entirely in leather folded into sculptural pleats, fastened with oversized metal buckles, and laser cut to look like lace.

They looked incredible; their outfits may have come from a very, shall we say, interesting, lingerie shop.

While they definitely looked unique, the wardrobe choice of Beyoncé and co. reflects a larger trend in fashion: Something I call, dominatrix dress.

Public interest has piqued of late, in regards to anything alluding to S&M, and abrupt, in-your-face sexuality. Examples of this abound, like in the sky rocking popularity of the 50 Shades of Grey book series. Pop star Rihanna, has even managed to build on her career by releasing song after song about “chains and whips”, and recently releasing an upcoming album cover where she appears topless.

Meanwhile, at Calvin Klein, models were dressed in skin-tight leather miniskirts and tops with sheer panels bearing cleavage. Furthermore, Lanvin’s fall/winter 2012 ad campaign featured plenty of fishnet tights.

Sparked from these shows, denim houses like 7 for All Mankind and Acne, began releasing waxed denim: Jeans coated in wax to give the effect of leather without the steep price tag or discomfort. Fashion blogs now abound with leather miniskirts, waxed jeans, and fishnet tights. All of a sudden, the hottest designers of the day are promoting dominatrix dress, and the world’s best dressed are taking note.

In a world where celebrities launch careers with home movies, it is little surprise that even fashion has become explicit. But will the extreme selfexpression and individuality implied with this style of dress continue after the trend has died? We will just wait and see, wearing waxed jeans, stilettos and sheer tops.

Fear not! Not only is it a play that is comical, informative and heartwarming, but it’s also an opportunity to discuss a variety of subjects on womanhood and feminism that are generally disregarded.

Stepha Zapata, the co-director of The Monologues at UNB, said the show is associated with V-Day, a global non-profit movement that has raised over $75 million for women’s anti-violence groups. The Vagina Monologues is an episodic play written by Eve Ensler, dealing with a variety of different issues that women face. This is the fifth year that it is running at UNB. “It’s basically a collection of monolgues that talk about different issues within womanhood, such as gender violence, sexuality, rape, genital mutilation and masturbation, put together into an hour’s show,” said Zapata.

“It’s unlike conventional theatre in

the sense that it’s not mandatory for the women to have their monologues memorized and it’s very casual. But, that being said, a lot of the women do really get into their characters and monologues.”

Zapata said that it’s easy to connect to every piece, because as a woman or a partner of a woman, you will understand where the monologues are coming from.

“One of the biggest issues that we’ve been trying to get over this year is that a lot of people that have never heard of it, ask if the show is only for women,” said Zapata.

“I feel like some guys feel uncomfortable to say that they want to go, and that’s not the point. All these issues are affecting everybody, I think it’s really important for everyone [who’s] interested to go, especially males. One of the monologues is even directed just to males this year.”

Zapata said, having something like The Vagina Monologues take place on a university campus is important because it raises awareness of topics that aren’t generally discussed among

students, even though they are important subjects.

“It’s important to have something like this at UNB because these issues are happening everywhere, especially on a university because it consists of young people who are all going through this certain stage of their lives,” said Zapata.

“It’s the idea that by bringing all these people together, you’re going to get a collection of stories from all over the community and if you bring awareness to the community, then everyone is going to start having the collective idea that’s it’s OK to openly discuss things like this.”

The funds raised at the event will be donated to the 2013 V-Day Spotlight Campaign and the Fredericton Women in Transition House. Vagina-pops (chocolate on a stick in the shape of a vagina) will also be sold at the show for $3.

The Vagina Monologues runs on Feb. 13 and 15 at 7 p.m. in Marshall d’Avray Hall, room 143. Tickets are $10 in advance at the Student Union Welcome Centre and $12 at the door.

How many times have we said that a relationship is only valid if it’s “Facebook official”?

The concept of the social networking site has almost become synonymous with friendship and more.

By that logic, it makes sense that the Internet would affect sex as well.

That’s what the Technically Sex panel intends to address on Feb. 12, as part of Sexuality Awareness Week.

Several psychology graduate students in the field of sexuality and research will be getting together to talk about how sex and the internet work together in today’s society. This is no surprise, since the research of sexuality is prominent at UNB. “There’s a lot of interest in the topic, but not as much critical analysis and discussion for the level of interest,” said Conor Falvey, coordinator of UNB’s Sexuality Centre.

Falvey said it is a subject that does not get explored enough, despite the fact that Internet dating is a modern paradigm – a means of social interaction that becomes more prevalent as time goes on.

toys, it is easy to see that almost every aspect of human sexuality has migrated to the Internet in some way. Falvey said, the more the Internet becomes involved with our relationships, the more society’s opinion on the relationship between sex and technology changes.

“People have a lot of preconceived notions of online dating and what it means,” said Falvey. “It’s important to reflect on those ideas and assess them and compare them to reality.”

Falvey said the stigma around things such as online dating, doesn’t exist anymore.

“Because sexuality is affected by almost all aspects of our lives, it’s inevitable that technology has affected our relationships,” said Falvey.

As a result, it becomes harder to dismiss internet dating as a niche market that is the object of scorn.

The panel hopes to dispel some of these clichés associated with sex, dating, and the Internet.

However, Falvey said there are unique risks and issues associated with relationships and the Internet, particularly, cyberstalking, which is a problem that tends to arise after a breakup. Having our relationships connected to Facebook can also lead to a prolonged breakup process, since

The speakers at the panel will be discussing these topics and more.

Afterward, there will be a Q&A session as well as some games. This free event will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Grad House on Feb. 12.

Condoms on Campus

Condoms are plentiful on campus, and if you find yourself looking for one, there are many places to go, including

right across the hall from your room.

Proctors carry an ample supply of condoms in a “condom and candy bowl” maintained and refilled on a regular basis.

“The proctors leave their doors open, and if they aren’t around, students can still come in to get a condom

from the bowl,” said Kendra Stokes, the don of Mackenzie House.

Stokes said the bowl is an inconspicuous and easy way of getting condoms, and all proctors have them. Even on incredibly short notice, condoms are easily accessible to students in residence.

Stokes said a proctor will never

turn someone away when requesting a condom, However, she added they do suggest students also go out and buy their own, to ensure they always have protection against risks like sexually transmitted diseases. Regardless, the condom and candy bowls are always available to everyone.

“The condom and candy bowls maintained by proctors are incredibly accessible,” said Jeff Paradis, educational proctor in Aitken House. “Some proctors will even put a few condoms on their door, slightly wedged into their white boards, if they know they are not around as much. The best part of living in Aitken is that we have a great open door policy.”

Paradis praises the open door policy of Aitken House and the trust among students, but also said proctors can take any measures to deliver condoms to students that feel uncomfortable or shy about coming to ask for one.

“Should a student be incredibly embarrassed to ask, they could anonymously text or call the Proctor phone, and the proctor could put one up on their door, where the student could walk by and grab it. The point is, no matter how embarrassed someone may be, condoms are still accessible,”

said Paradis.

Even for students not living in residence , there are other places on campus to find condoms without looking too hard. The Sexuality Centre, located in an inconspicuous, low traffic area on the third floor of the Student Union Building, has a pouch full of condoms tacked to their bulletin board during the week. Students can access it when the centre is both open and closed.

Both the Sexuality Centre and the proctors in residence recognize condoms can make some people feel uncomfortable, and some are too embarrassed to go out of their way to ask for them. These steps allow everyone to have a comfortable and anonymous way of accessing condoms.

“The biggest thing we can do to lessen people’s awkwardness about taking condoms is change our attitudes towards them,” said Connor Falvey, coordinator of the Sexuality Centre.

“If someone is making the effort to protect themselves and their partner by using condoms, they should be able to feel proud, not embarrassed. Instead of teasing them or judging their sexual choices, which sadly still happens; we should be celebrating them for making a responsible, considerate decision.”

For many of UNB’s swimmers, this was the last meet of the season.

For the lucky few that have CIS qualifying times, the season will continue on in Calgary, Alberta on Feb. 21-23.

This three-day event promised high caliber swimming, and fans

were not let down. The match-ups were similar to most of the meets this season, but no other meet can compete with the atmosphere of an AUS championship.

All eyes were on Danielle Losier on the women’s side, and Chris Garcelon on the men’s team. Both swimmers have excelled throughout the season and have both already secured spots in Calgary. Kaitlyn Young and Monica MacDonald also had overall impressive races this weekend.

the start of the meet, the awards for male and female student-athlete community service were handed out. The female recipient was UNB’s own Monica MacDonald. MacDonald was credited for the generous amount of work she does within the Fredericton community. This is a highly prestigious award as it highlights the impressive dedication that these athletes have to their sport, as well as being involved in the community. Varsity Reds coast into playoff bye Nick Murray The Brunswickan

It’s playoff time folks! The men’s hockey team finished out their regular season on Friday night, shutting out the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus 2-0, and now have a 13-day break with their bye to the Subway AUS semi-finals.

The V-Reds were on fire to close out the regular season, with Dan LaCosta winning his 15th game of the season, Tom Nesbitt scoring five points in the last three games, Nick MacNeil scoring 14 points in 12 games since Christmas, and Adrian Robertson making his return to the lineup after missing seven games and posting a game-high five shots Friday night.

But head coach Gardiner MacDougall isn’t worried about the 13-day layoff, and said the V-Reds should have a full lineup for the semi-finals, as leading goal scorer, Tyler Carroll has missed the last six games with an eye injury.

“I thought Adrian Robertson made a great return tonight, and [our athletic therapist], Joe Glenn has done a good job of getting guys back at the appropriate time,” said MacDougall. “So we’ll keep chipping away.”

With Antoine Houde-Caron serving the first of a two-game suspension, MacDougall opted to fill his spot with defenseman, Chad Denny on the wing.

While Denny wasn’t able to tee it up

from the point with his signature howitzer, he played a physical game in the corners, and posted a shot from the slot.

LaCosta picked up his first assist as a V-Red on Friday, assisting on the first goal of the game in the second period.

With Moncton on the power play, Guillaume Parenteau fired a shot off the iron, and LaCosta tipped the puck up to MacNeil along the sideboards.

MacNeil found Taylor MacDougall up ice, and just as he crossed the UdeM blue line, he wristed a shot, beating goalie André-Michel Guay five-hole.

Nesbitt added another for UNB late in the period, again beating Guay fivehole on a soft wrist shot. Guay made 24 saves in the first two periods, including several fit for the highlight reel, but was pulled to start the third, in place of Adrien Lemay. Head coach, Serge Bourgeois said they just wanted to give Lemay some ice time before their quarterfinal matchup against Acadia.

“I think we match up well against Acadia,” said Bourgeois, on the opening series. “They’re a tough team, and if we don’t play well we’re going to lose. It’s a different barn over there with the Olympic-size ice, but we have some speed and we’re able to skate with them.”

Meanwhile, the V-Reds are no strangers to long breaks leading into the semi-finals, having clinched first-place for the last six seasons, and LaCosta said he too isn’t worried about the

long layoff.

“I’ve went through longer stretches without playing before,” said LaCosta.

“You just have to try and stay sharp in practice and keep your fitness up and try not to lose your focus. I’ve gone through stretches where I haven’t played for two weeks and you just have to do what you can to stay ready.”

But going into the playoffs, UNB has struggled on the power play and is scoreless in its last 16 attempts since the second period against Saint Mary’s on Jan. 25. But the V-Reds have been stellar on the penalty kill to close the season, allowing only one goal in their last 19 times shorthanded, including scoring a shorthanded goal in each of their last four games.

“First of all, you want to be able to kill a penalty, but if we can get some bonuses, then we’ll take them,” said MacDougall, on UNB’s special teams.

“In the playoffs, you have to find ways to shut them down on the penalty kill and find ways to contribute on the power play.”

The V-Reds are on an eight-game winning streak heading into their semi-final matchup, and will play backto-back games on home ice to start the best-of-five series on Feb. 21.

Abba leads way for Varsity Reds in season finale Josh Fleck Sports Editor To close out the regular season, the Varsity Reds women’s volleyball team travelled to Nova Scotia to take on the Cape Breton University Capers and the StFX X-Women.

Friday night saw the Varsity Reds in Sydney, Nova Scotia to take on the 1-15 Capers. Despite their record, and place in the basement of the AUS standings, the Capers have a talented squad; talent like right side hitter, Chantelle Zawila, who sits fourth in the AUS in kills this season.

Zawila paired up with third year left side, Erica Dowling, to lead the way for the Capers as they took down the Reds in straight sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-22.

Dowling finished with 14 kills and ten digs, while Zawila had a tidy 12 kills, seven digs, and two blocks.

Vanja Mitrovic had 12 kills and 13 digs for a team that committed 18 attack errors in the match.

“It was a disappointing loss to CBU,” said fifth year libero, Megan Dudeck. “Winning that game could

have helped our ranking going into AUS playoffs.”

“CBU was a tough match. Their record doesn’t reflect how well they can play, and we showed up to play in body, but not in mind,” said head coach, Jilliane Goulet.

Following the loss to CBU, the Varsity Reds sat in fifth place, two points ahead of Memorial for the last spot in AUS playoffs, and two points behind StFX, whom they played on Saturday.

With playoff seeding on the line, the Varsity Reds left the CBU game in Sydney as they stepped onto the court in Antigonish, ready to end the season on a good note.

In a back and forth match that didn’t have either team winning consecutive sets, the Varsity Reds dug deep – pun intended – to pull out a five set win over StFX (25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 1625, 15-13).

Mitrovic once again led the way for the Varsity Reds, but it was a much more balanced attack in the win, as Amber Gamblin and Rebecca Glancy also registered double digits in kills

with 12 and 11, respectively. Leading the way on the defensive side was Celina Abba, who contributed nine blocks in the winning effort.

“We found our spark again against StFX with some smart hitting from Amber [Gamblin] and phenomenal blocking from Celina [Abba],” Dudeck said, about the keys to victory in Antigonish.

“It was a good to end the regular season with that match, playing the way we can,” said Goulet.

The playoff picture is now crystal clear as the AUS announced that the games that were postponed due to the weather on the weekend have now been cancelled, leaving UNB in fourth place heading into this weekend’s AUS Championships, hosted by the Memorial University Seahawks in Newfoundland.
