Brunk Auctions is honored to present an exceptional and historic piece of American cartography, the original manuscript map outlining the borders between Maryland and Pennsylvania. Drawn between 1767 and 1768 by Charles Mason (1728-1786) and Jeremiah Dixon (d.1777), the Mason-Dixon line is the symbolic boundary between Northern and Southern states. Originally owned by Benjamin Chew (1722-1810), the Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, it was subsequently owned by publishing magnate Malcolm Forbes. It will be offered alongside other maps and manuscripts critical in justifying the Mason-Dixon survey.
