F

rom my earliest memories, I recall my mother, Corrine, and me pursuing antiques in the Washington DC, Northwest Maryland, and Southeast Pennsylvania areas. I distinctly remember buying a Rupp cupboard in Littlestown, Pennsylvania, in 1949. My mother had an unerring eye for color and form. Whenever she could find a “keeper”, she was thrilled, budget permitting.

After completing my formal education and training, I began practicing medicine in Hagerstown, Maryland. I was determined to furnish my home with antiques. I started with local decorative arts, and then I became acquainted with the New York City market. My wife, Connie, and I spent many hours with Albert Sack, Wayne Pratt, and several other notable dealers. My wife was a most willing participant in these adventures and was a critical part of the team.

My wife passed away on March 29, 2025, and much of my joy surrounding my collection has disappeared. The memories are impossible to erase. No immediate family has an interest in the collection, so I feel it’s time for others to enjoy its beauty and form. It is my firm wish that these wonderful objects find a happy home and bring someone as much joy as they once did to my wife and me.

528 Rare and Important Nest of Seven Nantucket Lightship Baskets Signed Captain James Wyer Nantucket, Massachusetts, 1873, all but smallest basket with incised “J Wyer” or “J. Wyer” and year, painted “M E” and stenciled “Starbuck” to undersides of maple bases, hickory ribs, rattan weavers, oak handles and rims, all but the two largest baskets with bases decoratively turned at the interior, largest 8-1/2 x 12-5/8 x 12-3/8 in.

Captain James Wyer (1816-1899) started his maritime career as a cooper aboard the ship Nantucket, and eventually served as master of the whale ship Spartan. After the death of his wife in 1860, he moved to California where he worked as a carpenter for several years. He later returned to Nantucket and married Lois Starbuck in 1866, becoming stepfather to her two children Mary Eliza and Henry Pease. It is around this time that he is believed to have started making lightship baskets, which he continued to do through the 1890s. Mary Eliza writes about her stepfather making lightship baskets in her book My House and I. He is widely regarded as a premier Nantucket craftsperson and one of the earliest makers of lightship baskets. This nest was passed from Wyer to Mary Eliza, who at some point sold them to Mrs. James Laughlin. Laughlin’s son Edgar and his wife Katherine assembled the Edgar and Katherine Seeler collection of baskets and published the previously mentioned book on the subject. The baskets were eventually brought to auction and sold by Rafael Osona. A similar group can be found in the collections of the Nantucket Historical Association (see accession #1900.0046.001a-g), and was included in their 1994 exhibit “The Lightship Baskets of Nantucket, A Continuing Craft.”

529 Group of Six Ovoid Nesting Nantucket Lightship Baskets by Davis Hall Massachusetts, late 19th/early 20th century, ash swing handles, each with label for Davis Hall (1828-1906) to underside of base, largest 6-1/4 x 13-1/2 x 9-1/8 in.

Provenance: Wayne Pratt, Inc., Nantucket, Massachusetts, January 1994 (accompanied by copy of receipt) Estimate: $7,000 - $10,000 Davis Hall is credited with developing the oval lightship basket form. Born to a maritime family, Hall moved to Nantucket with his family around 1840. US Census records list his occupations throughout the years as mariner (1850), fisherman (1860), seaman (1870), working on a lightship (1880), and as a basket maker (1900). Closely related baskets can be found in the collections of the American Folk Art Museum (acc. 2014.8.2a-g) and the Nantucket Historical Association (acc. 1995.0020.001a-h).

530 Large Double Lidded Nantucket Lightship Basket Massachusetts, 19th century, hickory ribs and handle, mahogany lids, partial label to underside of base reads “Ma--/Willia----dwin Hosier/Nantucket/Sold me by Mrs. Brown of/the Quaker Antique shop.”, approx. 15-1/2 x 17-3/8 x 13-5/8 in.

Provenance: Wayne Pratt, Inc., Nantucket, Massachusetts, November 1996 (accompanied by copy of receipt) Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000 Literature: This basket is pictured in Nantucket Lightship Baskets by Katherine and Edgar Seeler, 1972, fig. 30, p. 74. The accompanying text reads “There is a note on the bottom saying this was made by “William Hadwen Hosier.” The basket in the preceding plate was also made by him.” The text accompanying the preceding plate reads “On the outside of the bottom is a note that this was made by Mr. Hosier from Millbrook Farm.” A HABS report on the Elihu Coleman house lists William Hosier as the owner of the property “known as the Hosier Farm in Mill Brook Country” in 1862.

According to Miles, Addison Bowles Armistead, the brother of George Armistead, the “hero of Ft. McHenry” in the War of 1812, was a lieutenant and later a captain in the United States Army Artillery.

Quoted in Miles, “This portrait of Armistead was described in 1904 by the sitters granddaughter, Lucy Randolph Galt of Welbourne, Virginia as one of the sitter “in his uniform, a profile taken on the pinkish paper so often used by St Memin for his work.”

538 Rare Pair 1803 Federal Eglomise Mirrors, Doggett Label and Penniman Signature one with label to back reading “JOHN DOGGETT, GILDER, Looking-Glass and Picture Framer Roxbury-Street”, the other mirror’s eglomise panel inscribed with “Painted by John Ritto Penniman, Boston, 1803”, Boston, Massachusetts, circa 1803, frames with beaded rope twist trim, acanthus carvings and fluted pilasters, the finely painted eglomise panels with nautical scenes centered by classical allegorical figures, later but old mirror plates, one back board reverse with “Sold Miss Sumner 7.00 pair”, 46-3/4 x 27-1/4 x 4 in.

Provenance: Israel Sack, New York, NY, February 1993 (accompanied by copy of receipt) Estimate: $40,000 - $60,000 Per Israel Sack research, these mirrors have rare relatively complete documentation. It establishes the collaboration between John Doggett and John Ritto Penniman who were two of Boston’s more prominent artisans. Miss Sumner appears in John Doggett’s account book in 1805 and 1806 as his client, but several pages are missing which probably included a bill for this pair of mirrors. Further research may establish the relationship of Miss Sumner to Charles Sumner, the famous Boston statesman.

549 Figured Mahogany Travelling Apothecary’s Chest, Alexandria, Virginia History the case likely English, mid 19th century, opening to a divided interior with two drawers of scales, droppers, and other tools, retaining numerous bottles bearing labels for J. Leadbeater & Sons Druggists in 16 slots, rear compartment with sliding lid opening to four more glass bottles in slots, brass hardware, 12-1/2 x 10 x 7-1/2 in.

Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000 Most of the bottles bear labels reading “J. Leadbeater & Son/Druggists,/Stabler’s Old Stand,/Established 1792/Nos. 5 & 7 S. Fairfax St./Alexandria V.A.”. This dates them to 1857-1859. The druggist’s building stands to this day as the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, and is a National Historic Landmark. Additionally, this piece was loaned to the Miller House Museum in Hagerstown, Maryland from May 20th to October 1st, 2005.

They had one child, George Walling. Sarah died on December 10, 1880 in Jefferson, Kentucky. Another later sampler by Sarah Carver from Hagerstown, Maryland is listed in the MESDA Object Database (NN-2628). Text accompanying the sampler by Carver quotes Gloria Seaman Allen’s book A Maryland Sampling: Girlhood Embroidery 17381860, which notes “The fact that there are so few samplers from western Maryland makes this Carver sampler a true rarity.”

Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000 Henry Adam immigrated from Germany to Hagerstown in 1797. It is believed that Adam is most likely the maker who brought the tin glazed tradition to the Hagerstown school and after school, many enthusiasts believe examples of Henry Adam’s work are unequaled in beauty and design compared to any other American potter of that period. Elaborately decorated Henry Adam examples in very good condition such as the one we offer here are are extremely rare.

600 Extremely Fine and Rare Pair of Snow Hill Nunnery John Bell Waynesboro, Pennsylvania Attributed Decorated Redware Bowls circa 1835-1860, both with lead glaze with copper and cream slip decorations, curved walls, unusual tooled stepped and flared semi round rims, centrally applied cream colored slip eight point stars with copper slip line infills, alternating bands of straight copper and wavy cream slip line decorations up the curved walls and onto rims, unglazed exteriors, 10-7/8 in. and 10-5/8 in.

2. Bidding will begin at a price appropriate in the auctioneer’s discretion. The auctioneer always reserves the right to withdraw a lot for any reason they deems appropriate. At the auctioneer’s discretion, no bid of less than one half the low estimate will be accepted from any source: phone bidding, absentee bidding, internet bidding, or bidding in the gallery. All lots in this catalog are offered subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum hammer price at which a lot will be sold. In executing a reserve, the auctioneer has the right to bid on behalf of the Consignor, whether by opening bidding or continuing bidding in response to other bidders until reaching the reserve. If the reserve is not met, the Auctioneer has the right to withdraw the item from the sale.

3. Once we declare that an item is sold, we cannot reopen the bidding. It is the bidder’s responsibility to get our attention prior to our saying “sold”. We reserve the right to reject any bids deemed inappropriate or to withdraw any item(s) for lack of appropriate bids. If an item is withdrawn from the auction it will be offered again only at the auctioneer’s discretion.

4. Payment must be made by cash, approved check, wire transfer, or MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express credit cards. We reserve the right to require bank checks for large purchases. Buyers not known to us who wish to write a check must provide a current letter of credit from their bank guaranteeing funds for that account. Credit arrangements must be made by the Friday prior to the day of auction so bank statements can be verified. We reserve the right to not issue a buyer’s number or to withhold merchandise if appropriate credit has not been established. We require wire transfers form international buyers. First time buyers will be required to pay by wire transfer or cashiers check.

5. Payment is expected at time of purchase. Payment for successful absentee, phone bids and online bids are required within five business days of the auction.

Bidding on an item indicates the client’s acceptance of our Terms of Sale. Your signature on our Bid Form or acceptance of these terms through any online bidding platform constitutes permission to charge successful bids to credit cards if payment is not received within five days of the auction.

6. We are pleased to offer absentee and phone bidding at no additional charge for prospective bidders who cannot be present at the auction. Please complete the Absentee Bid and/or Phone Reservation form. Absentee bids are executed competitively and confidentially. All reservations for phone bidding are held in the strictest confidence and must be received by 5 pm the day before the auction. No additional phone bids can be accepted on the day of the auction including additions when speaking with a staff person on the phone. We can accept written absentee bids submitted on the Absentee Bid Form up to 30 lots before the item comes up for auction. Leaving an absentee or phone bid on a lot indicates your willingness to open the bidding at one half the printed low estimate, and gives the auctioneer the authority to open the bidding at that level. Brunk Auctions shall have the right to withdraw any item at any time for any reason and to default any sale in the event of an error or dispute.

7. In the case of identical absentee bids, the bid received first will prevail. Bids left on liveauctioneers.com are not executed until the item is offered in the live auction and the order in which they are received is not a factor. We sell 70-100 lots per hour. In our experience, cellular phones are not always dependable, and we recommend phone bidding reservations be made on land lines. Submitting absentee bids or bidding by phone does not imply an extension of credit. Please see numbers 4 and 5 above.

9. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser’s risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be quoted by our local UPS Store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment for shipping is received. Transport of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We will provide a list of transport companies if we are unable to ship via UPS/ FedEx/USPS. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.

10. Note to internet absentee bidders. We do not accept cut bids, (bids less than the last interval) from the floor or from phone bidders, and we do not accept them from internet bidders. Thus it is possible that a lot could go to another bidder for less than your absentee bid.

For example, if the bids are progressing in ten dollar increments, $50, $60, $70 and your absentee falls at $75, we will not take the bid since it is less than the $10 interval. We always encourage bidders to bid by phone or to leave absentee bids through our to avoid such a situation.

11. All purchases are subject to applicable state sales tax (state where purchased) unless the state Certificate of Resale tax form is fully and completely filled out and received prior to time of purchase. Resale tax numbers from other states are accepted. International buyers are responsible for tariffs, taxes, or assessments of shipped items to the buyer’s country.

12. Bidding on an item indicates your understanding and acceptance of these Terms of Sale. If a purchaser breaches any of these Terms of Sale, including the obligation to pay for purchased items, Brunk Auctions may seek all remedies under the law including canceling the

sale and reoffering the property without reserve.

13. 15. Export and Permits – It is the purchaser’s sole responsibility to identify and obtain any necessary export, import, firearm, endangered species or other permit for the lot. Any symbols or notices in the sale catalogue reflect Brunk Auctions’ reasonable opinion at the time of cataloguing and are for bidders’ general guidance only; Brunk Auctions and the Consignor make no representations or warranties as to whether any lot is or is not subject to export or import restrictions or any embargoes.

16. ◉Endangered Species – Certain property sold at auction, for example, items made of or incorporating plant or animal materials, irrespective of age or value, may require a license or certificate prior to exportation and additional licenses or certificates upon importation to another country. Brunk Auctions suggests that international buyers check on foreign governments’ wildlife import requirements prior to placing a bid. All buyers agree to comply with any and all domestic and international restrictions on the trade of endangered species as a condition of the sale. Please note that the ability to obtain an export license or certificate does not ensure the ability to obtain an import license or certificate in another country, and vice versa. It is the purchaser’s responsibility to obtain any export or import licenses and/or certificates as well as any other required documentation. In the case of denial of any export or import license or of delay in the obtaining of such licenses, the purchaser is still responsible for making on-time payment of the total purchase price for the lot. Although licenses can be obtained to export some types of endangered species, other types may not be exported at all, and other types may not be resold in the United States. Brunk Auctions is not able to assist the purchaser in attempting to obtain the appropriate licenses and/ or certificates, and there is no assurance that an export license or certificate can be obtained. Any firearm purchased is at the user’s risk. Brunk Auctions expressly disclaims any liability whatsoever for accident, injury or damage resulting to any person or property from the storage or use of any such lot. Brunk Auctions strictly complies with all state and federal regulations pertaining to the sale, transfer, and transportation of firearms. It is the sole responsibility of the buyer to know and comply with all state firearms regulations prior to bidding. No persons associated with Brunk Auctions or their consignors warrant the safety or shootability of any firearm we sell. Buyers wishing to fire any weapon purchased from Brunk Auctions are strongly advised to have the weapon(s) examined by a competent gunsmith prior to use.

20. Online registration and bidding approval is done at the sole discretion of the auction house. We recommend that online bidders sign up at least 24 hours in advance of the auction to allow for time to complete the approval process. We make no guarantees that new online bidders who register within 24 hours of the sale will be approved for bidding. After signing up to bid, new online bidders may receive a message requesting additional information; we cannot approve any client without the

requested information. First time participants bidding through any online platform will be limited to a maximum of $25,000 total in cumulative bids. Partievs who wish to bid on premium lots may be asked to submit a deposit by wire transfer. Correspondence between prospective clients and the Auction House must be established directly with Brunk Auctions through phone, fax, or one of the relevant email addresses. We make no guarantee that we can respond to requests submitted through third party messaging systems. Due to the high volume of inquiries made within 24 hours of the sale, we make no guarantee that clients who contact us during this period will receive a response. Bids left on LiveAuctioneers & Bidsquare are not executed until the item is offered in the live auction therefore the order in which those bids are received is not a factor. We will make every effort within reason to accept and process bids from online participants. Brunk Auctions will not accept liability for any bids missed due to clerking issues, operator error, equipment failure, connection delays, communication lapses, or technical malfunctions of any nature.

21. Coin grading is subjective and more ‘art’ than ‘science.’ As such, any descriptive or numeric grades given are supplied as a guide to our bidders and should not be seen as a guarantee to any grade that might be received

from a third-party grader or grading company. Our best effort has been put forth to give condition reports that are as accurate as can reasonably be expected, however, first-hand inspection to formulate one’s own opinion is always recommended. Attributions such as Sheldon, Overton, and Friedberg numbers have been assigned on many lots and every measure has been taken to ensure accuracy. However, bidders should use our highly detailed photographs to assess and attribute as errors in cataloging do sometimes occur.
