1027 Edward “Ed” Clark (France/American, 1926-2019) Untitled (Paris Series), 1981, inscribed, signed, and dated lower right “Paris Clark ‘81”, dry pigment on paper, 40 x 53 in.; artist’s original painted wood frame, 41-1/4 x 54-1/8 x 1-1/8 in., mounted to foam core with some slight convexity, small void upper left, some abrasions, pin holes at corners loss at lower left corner; frame with some wear Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist in New York, NY in 1981; Private Virginia Collection Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000 Ed Clark was an important figure in postwar American abstraction whose seven-decade career centered on color, gesture, and the physical process of painting. Born in New Orleans and raised in Chicago, Clark studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before moving to Paris in 1952, where he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and encountered European modernism. He returned to New York in 1957 and became a charter member of the Brata Gallery, joining a generation of artists who were expanding the possibilities of abstract painting. Clark was particularly experimental in his approach to the medium. In 1957, he began making shaped canvases, among the earliest examples of the form, and in 1958 introduced the use of a push broom to apply paint. Working on canvases laid directly on the floor, he created broad, sweeping passages of color that emphasized both gesture and movement. These techniques became characteristic of his work and allowed him to treat color and the physical act of painting as primary elements of the composition. Although Clark is increasingly recognized within the history of African American art, his work occupies a broader place in postwar American painting. He developed an independent approach to abstraction that combined the gestural concerns of the New York School with the influence of his years in Paris and an increasingly sophisticated use of color. His work is represented in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Detroit Institute of Arts. Greater institutional and scholarly attention in recent decades has further established Clark’s importance within the history of American abstraction.

1057 Ryu Kyung-chai (Korean, 1920-1995) Back Garden, 1957, signed and dated lower right “Kyung-chai Yoo, 1957.5”, oil on canvas, signed, dated and inscribed verso, oil on canvas 45-7/8 x 35-7/8 in.; gilt wood frame, 47 x 37 x 1-1/4 in., good color, original canvas, flaking, crackle, loose canvas; frame with wear, abrasions Provenance: World House Galleries, New York, NY (label verso) Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000 Ryu Kyung-chai was a pioneering figure in the development of modern Korean painting and a leading practitioner of Korean lyrical abstraction. Ryu studied modern Western painting at the Ryokuinsha Painting School in Tokyo, graduating in 1941. He came to national prominence in 1949 when Neighborhood of a Bare Mountain received the Presidential Award at the first National Art Exhibition of Korea. His early work, rooted in landscape and nature, gradually evolved toward increasingly abstract forms, culminating in the expressive and color-driven abstraction for which he became known. Ryu was instrumental in the transformation of Korean painting in the postwar period. In 1957, he founded the Creative Art Association and became an influential advocate for new directions in Korean art. His artistic development moved from the lyrical realism of the 1940s and 1950s to the dissolution of recognizable forms in the 1960s and, by the 1970s, to a fully abstract language of color, gesture, and rhythm. Throughout these changes, his work retained a sustained sensitivity to the natural world. The present work is particularly significant in light of its association with World House Galleries, New York. Ryu was among the thirty-five Korean artists selected by American art historian Ellen D. Psaty for Contemporary Korean Painting(s), held at World House Galleries from February 25 through March 22, 1958. Psaty traveled to Korea in August 1957, visiting artists and selecting works for the exhibition. Sixty-two works by thirty-five artists were ultimately presented, introducing a broad crosssection of contemporary Korean painting to an American audience in the years immediately following the Korean War. The World House Galleries label accompanying the present work identifies the artist as “Yoo Kyun-chai,” exhibition no. 59, item no. 1. This contemporary designation, together with Ryu’s documented inclusion in the 1958 exhibition, provides an important link between the present painting and a landmark moment in the international presentation of postwar Korean modernism. Exhibited: World House Galleries, New York, NY, Contemporary Korean Painting(s), February 25-March 22, 1958, No.59. https://live.brunkauctions.com/auctions/brunk/form-visionmodern-art-design-october-22-2026-22898 Click here to view lots and detail photos.

1069 George Grosz (American/German, 1893-1959) The Cop & The Anthem, circa 1933-1934, original illustration for the plate facing page 169 in The Voice of the City and Other Stories, signed lower right in black ink “Grosz”, inscribed verso “36/1901”, “235”, “88P”, watercolor, reed pen and pen and ink on P.M. Fabriano wove paper with watermark, 25-1/4 x 18-7/8 in.; gilt wood frame, 30-1/4 x 23-3/4 x 1-3/8 in., loose, inscriptions front margins and verso possibly editorial, waviness, some losses to corners, pinholes at top middle, tack holes at corners, some light toning, verso with paper tape and discolored remnants of brittle mounting adhesive; frame with abrasions and some loss at edge Provenance: The studio of the artist, Bayside, Long Island, New York, 1934; Private Collection Estimate: $15,000 - $25,000 It was in 1934 that George Macy, publisher of the Limited Edition Club in New York, gave Grosz the assignment to illustrate O. Henry’s selected short stories, published a year later under the title “The Voice of the City and Other Stories”. A homeless person in Madison Square Garden, sitting on a bench. His name is Soapy. It is winter time. This is, how O. Henry’s story begins. „Soapy’s mind became cognizant of the fact that time had come for him to resolve himself into a singular Committee of Ways and Means to provide against the coming rigor(...). Three months on the Island was what his soul craved. Three months of assured board and bed and congenial company...”. So Soapy thought of an easy way accomplishing his desire. He cheated a meal at a restaurant without paying. However, they let him go. In a cigar store, Soapy stole a silk umbrella from a customer, and when the owner claimed,My umbrella”, Soapy sneered „Why don’t you call a cop?”. New York would not be New York without a policeman literally at every corner. However, when the policeman came, the umbrella man retreated by admitting, that he picked it up this morning in a restaurant and said if you recognize it as yours...” Moving back to his park bench at Madison Square, Soapy came to a standstill, as sweet music of the coming Sabbath anthem, coming out of an old church, transfixed him. He would change his life, find work, no more evil deeds, he would, he would....,,Soapy felt a hand laid on his arm. He looked quickly around into the broad face of a policeman. „What are you doin’ here?” asked the officer, „Nothin’,” said Soapy. „Then come along,” said the policeman. „Three months on the Island,”, said the Magistrate in the Police Court the next morning.” Grosz shows the moment Soapy is spellbound by the anthem, and a policeman approaching him. This watercolor, like the other watercolors and drawings Grosz did for O. Henry, shows, how thrilled the artist got by O. Henry’s storytelling, and how brilliantly he executed them, opening an illustrative world of its own to the text. It is remarkable, that Grosz started the work without any preliminary drawing, using only watercolor, working the watercolor wet into wet, with only few lines of reed pen and pen and ink for some contour and details. Brunk Auctions would like to thank Ralph Jentsch for confirming the authenticity of this watercolor. It will be included in his forthcoming raisonne of the artist’s works. https://live.brunkauctions.com/auctions/brunk/form-visionmodern-art-design-october-22-2026-22898 Click here to view lots and detail photos.

1084 Andy Warhol (New York/Pennsylvania, 1928-1987) Tattooed Lady, signed within print on underwear, offset lithograph on thin green Plover onion skin paper with original folds, sheet 29 x 11 in.; unframed, loose, slight toning and fading Provenance: Acquired by Patricia McCullough Stevenson, New York, NY; By descent in family Estimate: $5,000 - $8,000 Andy Warhol used this print as his “résumé” to gain employment at advertising agencies throughout New York. Seeking work as a graphic artist he stopped by B. Altman where Patricia “Pat” McCullough Stevenson worked as a fashion illustrator from 1954 to 1961. She remembered when her boss, Lou Ritter, refused to give Andy Warhol a job, declaring, “What is this?” as he threw his résumé in the trash. Pat retrieved the print as she was impressed with the image of a woman covered with the logos of various companies covering her arms and legs like tattoos. Ritter also reportedly said, ”Warhol would never make it at Altman.” We know how the story ends and are grateful to have this imaginative document.
