Welcome to the Fall and Winter 2022 auction season! The team here at Brunk Auctions is excited to present some highlights of what is coming up-the following pages will give you a taste of the range and quality of what will be passing under the gavel in the coming SeptemberDecember sales. The season starts with a bang! In the coming shorts weeks we will offer an exceptional Premier sale (September 16-17) and the remarkable estate of Peter H. Tillou (September 29-30). The Premier sale is over 1,500 lots, and represents one of our very best offerings of American furniture and paintings to date, in addition to numerous other categories. The sale features fresh to market works from a number of estates and collections including the collection of C.L. Prickett and the estate of Malvina Hoffman. The the collection of only one man, the estate of Peter Tillou, features a similar range of exceptional art and objects from across the centuries and the globe. For those lucky enough to have known Peter, to have worked with him, bought from him, bid against him, listened to him speak, we know that his passing left a void. He was the real thing - a curious mind that held onto details, a participant with enthusiasm for the chase and the game, someone who shared with us the satisfaction of finding a treasure. The number of categories that he collected is remarkable, and that he did it with great elan is all the better.

In addition, an extensive group of American folk art will be featured, and the proceeds will benefit the American Folk Art Museum.

The Estate of Peter H. Tillou, Litchfield, Connecticut The sale will include important works across category and period, from Old Masters to modern works including rare works by Winfred Rembert; from American paintings, furniture, and folk art to rare mineral specimens; gold antiquities, Chinese ceramics and bronzes, pre-Columbian works of art, Western art and Native American artifacts as well as his personal library will all be included in this landmark sale. There was almost nothing that Peter Tillou didn’t collect over his sixty-five years as a legendary art dealer and collector.

The Old Master Paintings of Peter Tillou

The last of Peter Tillou’s great Dutch and Flemish still life paintings are well represented, beginning with the show stopper by Mertens, said by Dr. Fred Meijer to be the second finest of the artist’s work. Other rare and notable works are by the artists Osias Beert the Elder and Theodor van Aenvack.

Portraits are also well represented, with extraordinary examples such as a pair of rare 17th century Spanish School life size portraits of women and another full length double portrait from the circle of Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger.

Others include a fine large family portrait by Herman Mijnerts Doncker, Circle of Nicolaes Maes, Pieter Nason, Henry Pickering, John Hoppner, Carlo Ceresa, and Franz Gebhard Stolberg.

Paintings, some depicting a wreath of flowers, a busy harbor, and mussel sellers, have all come from Tillou’s favorite places - his home and restored bank building.

Old Master Paintings, Early Decorative Arts, and Antiquities Research continues for some exciting Old Master paintings including an important period work relating to Giovanni Lanfranco’s composition for the Navicella Altar in St. Peter’s Basilica, The Vatican, Rome. It represents a very complete document of Lanfranco’s fresco that was damaged and features Peter and Jesus on the Sea of Galilee. Another work that will undergo extensive research is a small sketch which relates to a composition by Raphael. These and other fine paintings will be under consideration for the November Premier Auction.

Also featured this Fall are fine paintings, antiquities, and decorative arts from the Estate of Ben Smith, Newnan, Georgia. Ben Smith (1941-2021), was an Atlanta-based artist known for his monumental woodblock prints featuring fantastical subjects such as wizards, shamans, mythological creatures, and ceremonial figures rendered through bold, flowing linework. He held teaching positions at the Chastain Arts Center and the Savannah College of Art and Design in, and his work has been featured in numerous galleries and institutions throughout the country, including the High Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; the Morris Museum, New Orleans, LA; the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY; and Brown University, Providence, RI. Smith’s personal collection of fine art and decorative objects now comes to market, featuring Old Master, Spanish, and Continental school paintings, ancient Greek and Italian pottery and artifacts, Delftware, Majolica pottery, and tin-glazed ceramics, reliquaries and devotional sculptures, Continental furniture, and more.

British & Continental

Rare and interesting British and Continental works of art continue to arrive at our gallery daily. Just in from an important estate is a remarkable pair of English Chippendale library chairs, finely carved and of the highest quality.

An exceptional mask carved Irish Chippendale card table and an Irish slab table have also just arrived. Other bachelor’s chests, settees, bookcases and related forms are complemented by fine Delftware including examples from the collection of Constance and Dudley Godfrey, early brass from the Kahn estate and a Colorado collection, early portraits in fine period frames, fine clocks, mirrors, and silver.

American Fine Art An outstanding group of American Paintings from the 18th to the 21st century comes to our auction podium this fall. From WIlliam Matthew Prior through Frederic Church, Albert Bierstadt, Robert Henri and Childe Hassam, we offer the most important names in American art from important private collections across the country.

Collection of C.L. Prickett

Established by Clarence Prickett in 1962, C.L. Prickett Antiques was renowned for integrity and quality and stood at the forefront of the American Furniture market for decades. Always with an eye to good condition, the firm focused on exceptional 18th and early 19th century Pennsylvania and New England examples, a focus that is reflected in the remarkable collection to be offered in our September 16-17 auction. Many of the works to be offered have their own storied histories such as the Massachusetts desk and bookcase that was given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Mrs. Russell Sage, and the rare set of six Philadelphia Chippendale chairs that descended in the Prentiss family.

Property from the Estate of Gerald J. and Rosalie Kahn Milwaukee, Wisconsin Gerald J. and Rosalie Kahn were pillars of their Wisconsin community for decades, dedicating time and resources to numerous charitable causes.

Gerald and his law partner Dudley Godfrey opened their first office in Milwaukee in 1957, the beginnings of a firm that would grow and prosper throughout both men’s lives. Dudley and Constance Godfrey’s keen interest in historic objects inspired the Kahns to also collect and decorate with fine 18th century furnishings. Passionate about gardening as well, the couple collected together and created a beautiful home, inside and out. Brunk Auctions is honored to offer art and furnishings from the Kahn’s years of collecting- fine and beautiful objects for the next generation of owners to enjoy.

A Private New Jersey Estate From a private New Jersey estate comes a fine collection of American paintings and furniture.

The focused and studied collectors assembled the collection over decades, buying from top dealers such as Hollis Taggart, Richard York, Bernard & S. Dean Levy, and others. Highlights include works by Frederick Frieseke, Hermann Herzog, Edward Henry Potthast, Edmund Greacen, Jan Matulka, Norton Bush, Julian Alden Weir, and folk artists including Joseph Whiting Stock. Among the 18th century furniture offerings are a New York carved Mahogany tea table, a Connecticut cherry dressing table, a Pennsylvania step back cupboard, and a fine Massachusetts desk and bookcase in figured mahogany. This is an excellent, fresh to market collection.

American Furniture and Decorative Arts

As usual, our Fall sales include an extensive and diverse selection of American works across periods and mediums. Adding to the other estates and museum deaccessions already noted come fresh to market rarities including a blind fretwork decorated Philadelphia chest on chest, a Charles Willson Peale attributed portrait, White House china including a rare turkey platter from the Rutherford B. Hayes service, a Newport tea table in old surface, a Jose Reyes Nantucket friendship basket, a Chester County desk and bookcase with Philip Bradley provenance, a rare Massachusetts attributed piecrust tea table, and an extensive collection of early clocks including a Willard banjo clock signed by the decorator John R. Penniman.

Folk Art Brunk Auctions is again honored to offer numerous works of American folk art sold to benefit the American Folk Art Museum in New York. Traditional and self taught artists are represented, and an extensive collection of decoys is also featured. From the collection of John Schorsch come important works by Joseph Whiting Stock, A. Ellis, William Matthew Prior, and an exceptional interior depicting the Merrill family, ca. 1830. Outsider art, weathervanes and trade signs, painted furniture, tools, implements, and other forms will be included in the extensive offerings.

Southern

Fall sales include important Southern works in many categories. The sales are led by two remarkable watercolors depicting low country fishing scenes by Alice Ravenel Huger Smith. Several objects formerly in the collection of Tony and Marie Shank are also among the highlights-a rare, paint decorated “pineapple” huntboard and a folk art painted dulcimer. An imposing Edgefield face vessel attributed to the Miles Mills manufactory leads the way for pottery.

Numerous colorful quilts are filling our galleries, among them the outstanding Psalms quilt made in Mississippi, ca. 1930s. Several sugar chests are among the furniture offerings, with a Kentucky example retaining its original surface among the highlights. New Orleans is well represented, with an exceptional Newcomb pottery vase and fine art by Aaron Bohrod and Anne Goldthwaite leading the way. A rare Creole Mississippi armoire adds to the mix, as do a John Ewan silver teapot, an important Florida scene by Beanie Backus, and modernist works by Lamar Dodd and others.

Rare Bound Volume of John Abbot Watercolors An Exceptionally Rare and Unbroken Volume Birds of Georgia, 1823 “Consisting of the most rare and beautiful kinds Drawn and Coloured from Nature.”

John Abbot was born in London, 1751, and was originally on the path to a career in Law. However, he was fascinated by the natural world and drawn to the community of 18th century scientists who took their inspiration and acquired their specimens from England’s many colonies, so he chose instead to spend a lifetime observing and recording the insects, butterflies, and birds of Virginia and Georgia. We are richer for that decision - though Abbot was probably not. Abbot’s work has been underrepresented in the discussion of early American naturalists, as the vast majority of his work was sent to London. Appreciation of his work has grown as collectors further afield have seen his lovely watercolors and shared his view of the natural world in the 18th century South. Abbot’s watercolors and published works are held in public and private collections around the world, including the University of Georgia.

Western & Native American

Aesthetic Movement, Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, and Art Deco

Our fall sales include one of the most extensive collections of Art Nouveau furnishings and decorations that we have had to offer. Among the many highlights are a number of Majorelle furniture forms, including marquetry inlaid examples and “Chicoree” forms that include two dining tables and two sets of chairs. A rare bat figural and art glass chandelier “is a staff favorite, as is a fine Aesop’s Fables inlaid table. A collection of aesthetic movement ceramics includes many designs by Christopher Dresser, featuring a dramatic pair of vases produced by Minton. Art Deco furniture, iron, and related includes works by and/or attributed to Paul Kiss, Jacques Adnet, Maurice Dufrene, and Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann.

Post War | Modern | Contemporary

Our October sale will feature fine paintings, prints, and sculptures including a very special selection of eight sculptures from the studio of sculptor and architect, Ray Kaskey. Offered will be the only artist proof for the monumental Portlandia, the powerful study for Justice, commissioned by the city of Shreveport, Louisiana, Queen Charlotte, and a maquette for the WWII monument, Washington, DC. Fine multiples and drawings from private collections include Alexander Calder, Sam Gilliam, Henry Moore, Marc Chagall, and others spanning the 20th and 21st centuries. Two collections stem from personal connections to Paul Cadmus, William Wegman, Robert Kushner, and Nam Jun Paik. Also featured are a selection of turned wood bowls and vessels from Southern wood turning master Rude Osolnik, glass sculpture by John Kuhn, John Littleton, and Kate Vogel, and furniture designs by Knoll, Eames, Marcel Breuer, Nakashima, John Lewis, and more.

The Estate of Malvina Hoffman Hoffman’s story as one of the most important artists of her era began in New York. A true knickerbocker, she learned from the best–Arts Students League of New York; the Woman’s School for Applied Design; Gutzon Borglum; John White Alexander; the studio artists on McDougall Alley who mentored Hoffman and her friend, Ivan Mestrovic, but her most important influence was August Rodin. Rodin took the sculptor under his tutelage when he was in his 70s, and worked with her until his death. He called her his “sensitive student,” and took her on as his protégé in 1910 and considered her his legacy. She helped Rodin catalog the work in his Paris studio for six weeks until WWI broke out, and then she managed the logistics of hiding all of his work to protect it during the war. After the war and Rodin’s death, Malvina Hoffman was asked to install the first Musée Rodin in Paris. Besides Rodin, her other extraordinary collaboration was with Anna Pavlova, and this auction features a number of images of Pavlova, both sculpture and painting, from their iconic work together. At age 45 Hoffman received perhaps her most important commission–the largest bronze commission in art history– from the Field Museum in 1930. It was larger than Rodin’s Gates of Hell. Malvina Hoffman was paid more than any artist ever for the Field commission–$2.2million in today’s dollars– and she finished it on time and within budget, traveling the globe for three years undergoing the harshest conditions of travel, climate, and studio. When she died in 1966 at age 81, Hoffman earned a front-page New York Times obituary as one of the most important artists of the era. Her epic life made her a household name and inspired women artists to take on the physically demanding work of sculpture. We are proud to be offering works of art from her illustrious life in a series of auctions, beginning in September.

Photography On the auction calendar for the month of October are extensive fine photography offerings. From Brandt to Blackmon–a Midwestern Photography Collection is a veritable who’s who of 20th and 21st century photography– Ansel Adams, Julie Backmon, Bill Brandt, Cornell Capa, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt…through Edward Weston and Gary Winograd. Additional photography highlights come to the block in our Modern & Design auction, including works by Ray Metzger, Alfred Stieglitz, Yousuf Karsh, and others.

Silver

Fall and Winter will feature American, Southern, English, and Continental silver including a Tiffany sterling tea service, a William and Mary English Silver Footed Salver, a ‘‘John Ewan teapot, Kentucky mint juleps, an English silver rowing trophy. September will include a large single owner collection of Georgia silver.

Jewelry The September and December auctions will feature a variety of modern, retro, and antique estate jewelry from various private collections and notable makers, including Oscar Heyman, Tiffany & Co., Rolex, Cartier, Bulgari, Lange & Sohne, and others. The September sale will feature an Oscar Heyman Emerald and Diamond ring, with a 15.09ct. cushion cut Columbian emerald and 40 round brilliant diamonds, as well as a Platinum, 10.17ct. Sapphire and Diamond Ring.

Asian We continue to uncover wonderful Asian art objects and 2021 has been a banner year offering estate items from decades old collections. Coming to auction this season are Qing dynasty ceramics and monochrome glazes, as well as Chinese jades with Park Avenue New York provenance. Examples from established long time dealers will be available in our upcoming Asian sale.

Luxury Goods Our September and December Auctions will feature a selection of modern and vintage luxury goods from various private collections, with offerings from notable designers Hermès, Prada, Ferragamo, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and more. Highlights include: Hermès Birkin 40, Hermès Kelly 28, a Louis Vuitton five piece luggage set, and a variety of Hermès scarves.

Maps

Fall sales include a diverse range of important maps and other ephemera. The November sale will feature important maps deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, with all proceeds to benefit the Joseph H. and June S. Hennage fund. The famous 1775 Fry Jefferson map of Virginia will be included, along with William Faden’s Plan of Yorktown and Gloucester. The sale will also feature the exceptionally rare Jeffrey’s 1776 American Atlas. This important atlas was used by both American and British military officers during the Revolutionary War, and rarely comes to market.

Freshly arrived in our warehouse is an exceptional collection of Classical American furniture and decorations. Formed by an advanced collector who is now downsizing, the collection features exceptional works and includes makers such as John and Thomas Seymour and Duncan Phyfe.
