runk Auctions is honored to be selling the contents of Shirley Hall, a landmarked Colonial Revival house built in the early 1940s on the shores of Linkhorn Bay, a Chesapeake Bay estuary. The architect, William Graves Perry, and his Boston firm were responsible for rebuilding Colonial Williamsburg’s core buildings and they relied upon 18th century architectural designs for the designs of Shirley Hall. The house also incorporated historic features from previously dismantled properties: an 1826 staircase from Hunter House in Old Princess County, Virginia, the cypress floors of an early 19th century Louisiana plantation, and an early 19th century Valley of Virginia mantel.

The house was acquired by Dick and Shirley Roberts, and their life-long collection appears in this catalog.

No attention to historic detail or accuracy was too insignificant and the couple relied on their cultivated eye, as well as the expertise of leading dealers and scholars, to acquire the finest works possible. They created symbiotic interiors in which the furnishings complemented and enhanced the architectural environment.

Shirley Hall and its contents were prominently featured in the December 2001 issue of The Magazine Antiques; most of the objects published in those pages are now offered here.

517 Extremely Rare Newport/Boston Queen Anne Walnut Side Chair Newport, Rhode Island or Boston, Massachusetts, 1735-1745, original maple slip seat frame with original linen undercover and webbing, double peaked crest rail, hooped upper portion to stiles, inverted baluster splat, compass seat, cabriole front legs, pad feet, shaped H stretcher and rounded bar rear stretcher, 40-1/2 x 21-1/2 x 21-1/4 in.

This chair is of the set or a counterpart to a set of six chairs having a long history of being attributed to Job Townsend, made for the Eddy family of Warren, Rhode Island, in 1743. One chair retained by the family was noted in the early 1900s to bear a Townsend label (American Art Association Anderson Galleries, “Colonial and Early Federal Furniture... Acquired from Notable Collections by Israel Sack,” no. 80); that labeled example has not resurfaced. Recent scholarship reattributes most pre-1755 chairs of this type, previously called Newport work, to Boston. Given Boston’s dominant role in New England chairmaking and upholstery before 1755, a Boston origin is plausible here as well, though it remains speculative absent a labeled Boston example or construction evidence ruling out Rhode Island production.

These chairs are part of a set of at least fourteen chairs, now with only six surviving, one (marked ‘I’) which is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum (illustrated in Morrison H. Heckscher, American Furniture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art (1985), pp.44-45, cat. no. 9). Notably, the set is unusual among Rhode Island cabriole-leg chairs in having square seat frames and anthemion-like relief carving on the sharp-edged knees.

In characteristic manner, the feet of these chairs display balls proportionally wider than they are tall, slender, and elongated talons, delineated knuckles with the rear talon meeting the ankle in a rounded joint, and a flattened area between the tendons of the ankle.

These same feet appear in a corner chair and table made for John Brown in 1760 and a tea table made for Jabez Bowen in 1763 (see: Albert Sack, The New Fine Points of Furniture: Early American [1993], p. 67 and Nancy Richards and Nancy Goyne Evans, New England Furniture at Winterthur: Queen Anne and Chippendale, [1997], pp. 238-239, cat. no. 123).

The original set of chairs was probably made for John Still Winthrop (1720-1776), the great-grandson of Quaker colonist Governor John Winthrop (1588-1649).

The four remaining known chairs from the original set of 14 include the chair at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, two that were sold at Christie’s, New York, NY, “Important American Furniture, Folk Art and Decorative Arts”, October 5, 2000, lots 95 and 96, and a single chair sold Sotheby’s, New York, NY, “Property From The Hascoe Family Collection: Important American And English Furniture, Fine & Decorative Arts”, January 23, 2011, lot 65.

522 Exceptional Rhode Island Attributed Chippendale Mahogany Tea Table Rhode Island or possibly Eastern Connecticut, circa 1765-1785, highly figured book-matched mahogany molded top, shaped skirts, on graceful cabriole legs with ball and claw feet, 28 x 36-5/8 x 22-1/4 in.

The top consists of two book-matched boards that beautifully show off the highly figured grain. This exceptional table is distinguished by the method used to attach the top to the frame. Like the top and aprons, the legs and feet of the table retain rich, dark surfaces.

The skirt profile, featuring notched ogee shaping and a central raised double arch, directly relates to a signed 1748 Christopher Townsend high chest and two associated pre-1750 workshop examples. While nearly identical in form, proportions, and hardware to a prominent dressing table in a private collection, a critical construction detail strongly isolates the hand of Christopher Townsend over his brother Job, Sr. The rear legs of this table are glued into shallow rabbets cut into the backboard to increase surface area. This highly specific structural trait is a documented hallmark of Christopher’s workshop, found on his signed high chest at the Chipstone Foundation and a closely related dressing table in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A high chest attributed to Christopher Townsend that features a similar apron is illustrated in Luke Beckerdite, “The Early Furniture of Christopher and Job Townsend”, American Furniture (2000) p. 11, fig. 20. This extraordinary pair of tables is arguably the finest pair of Charleston Federal tables known. The only other known pair of Charleston satinwood card tables is in the collection of Bayou Bend, nos. B.2004.1.1 and B.2004.1.2. Satinwood furniture in any American context is incredibly rare. A satinwood table from Philadelphia is in the Kaufman Collection and illustrated in J. Michael Flanigan, American Furniture from the Kaufman Collection (1986), pp. 164-165, cat. no. 63.

For closely related floral inlaid tablets, including those on sideboards, see one illustrated in Gerald W.R. XIII. The use of two swing legs and a medial stretcher can be similarly seen on a Charleston card table at Colonial Williamsburg, illustrated in Ronald L. Rauschenberg and Bivins note that these tables are part of a small group of furniture attributed to the same Charleston shop, most likely that of Robert Walker.

At the time this pair of card tables was made, Robert Walker was one of the most successful cabinetmakers in Charleston. He advertised that he had satinwood and affixed his label to the primarily satinwood secretary bookcase shown in Rauschenberg and Bivins (pp. 595-598, fig. NC-72). Among other such pieces, Walker is also credited with having made the secretary wardrobe also illustrated in Rauschenberg and Bivins (pp. 582-586, fig. C-65).

The early use of mahogany, the open-work brasses, the lobed central apron (likely a vestigial William and Mary element), lappet-carved knees, and the overall quality of execution point to a London-trained cabinetmaker working in Charleston at this early period.

Provenance: Philip and Mary Mason Wythe Tabb, Toddsbury Plantation, Gloucester County, Virginia, thence by descent in the family until 1929, when Colonial Williamsburg acquired the chairs from Margaret Arthur Tabb in Newstead; ex collection Colonial Williamsburg circa 2007; Levison & Cullen Gallery, Atlanta, Georgia, 2007 (accompanied by copy of receipt) Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000 Despite a history of ownership in Virginia, these chairs were made in Baltimore, Maryland, underscoring the fact that Virginia residents near the Chesapeake Bay often turned to Baltimore cabinet- and chairmakers.

The larger set of eight chairs was originally owned by Philip and Mary Mason Wythe Tabb of Toddsbury, a plantation on the North River in Gloucester County, Virginia. Phil Tabb inherited the Toddsbury property in 1782. About ten years later, he undertook an extensive remodeling; the purchase of these chairs was probably associated with the resulting redecoration. These chairs remained at Toddsbury until 1856 when the house was sold and the chairs were moved to Newstead, a new Tabb house on the same estate.

Two chairs from the original set of eight are still in the collection of Colonial Williamsburg and illustrated in Ronald Hurst and Jonathan Prown, Southern Furniture 1680-1830: The Colonial Williamsburg Collection (1997), pp. 124-126, fig. 31; the other four chairs are presently in private collections.

XII. Though historically identified as a Bignonia, this species is actually the Southern catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides), a tree native to Virginia and the southeastern United States. It was first documented in the 1720s by naturalist and plant explorer Mark Catesby, whose illustration and description of its “spreading bunches of tubulous flowers, White, only variegated with a few reddish purple spots and yellow streaks on the inside” closely correspond to Ehret’s depiction (flore sordide albo intus maculis purpureis & luteis). Catalpas were a familiar feature of the colonial landscape and are documented as lining Williamsburg’s Palace Green during the eighteenth century.

Thomas Jefferson also admired the species, including it in his 1771 planting plan for “The Open Ground on the West-a shrubbery” at Monticello.

While serving as President, he further demonstrated his appreciation by arranging for seeds of the “Bignonia Catalpa” (Catalpa bignonioides) to be sent to his Parisian friend, Madame de Tessé.

Correspondence between Virginia planter John Custis and the London merchant and botanist Peter Collinson further documents the plant’s desirability, noting that martagon lilies were being imported into Virginia by 1739 as part of the expanding transatlantic exchange of botanical specimens. These references underscore the flower’s significance within the early history of American botany and the scientific networks that connected Virginia’s flora to European collectors and gardens.

Albert Sack categorized this clock as a Masterpiece, and is quoted as saying “This (clock) will always be recognized as one of the supreme clocks of this rare and desirable group”.

Being one of only 20 known examples of this form by Wilder, with its pierced fretwork hood and splayed French feet, it is of the most sophisticated caseworks to house his clock mechanisms. Additionally, a paper label denotes the person for whom it was made “Made for Martin Fearing by Joshua Wilder, 1821”. Also attached to the inner backboard is an inscription stating that a Mr. James Stephenson of Hingham cleaned this clock in 1855 and another reference area on the underside of the baseboard reads “George Lew/Feb. 1888” probably indicating another time in which the clock was serviced. Both these, as well as probably other times of cleaning and adjusting the clock works resulted in the top edges of the saddle-board being nailed and trimmed. All the painted designs of the dial, as well as the signature remain in undisturbed condition.

Major Martin Fearing (1785-1868) was a prominent Hingham, Massachusetts merchant descended from the town’s earliest settlers. Son of Thomas Fearing (1749-1820) and Lydia Ripley (1753-1815), he married his second cousin Aurelia Fearing in 1812 and lived on Main Street in Hingham Center. He served as a Representative to the Massachusetts General Court (1833-1837, 1852), as Hingham Town Treasurer, and held the rank of Major in the Second Regiment of Infantry.

The original owner of this painting, Thomas Ellis Kirby, was an important figure in the American art market.

Along with James Sutton and R. Austin Robertson, Kirby co-founded the American Art Association in New York City in 1883. An art gallery and auction house devoted to promoting American artists. AAA merged with Anderson Galleries in 1929, and not long after, that firm was taken over by a group of former AAA employees, including Mr. Parke and Mr. Bernet and Parke-Bernet Galleries was formed. In 1964, they were bought by Sotheby’s.

Surviving tables from this group are few, with just a handful known, and only six with straight pierced Chinoiserie “moongate” cross stretchers. Just three of these tables bear his label: the table offered here, one at the Winterthur Museum, Library & Garden, and a third in the collection of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts in Boston.

Originally one of a pair, the mate to this table was in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Lammot du Pont Copeland that sold at Sotheby’s New York, NY, January 19, 2002, lot 56, now in a private collection.

The other two tables with “moongate” stretchers are at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Preservation Society of Newport County.

In his catalog for the “John Townsend” exhibition, Morrison Heckscher indicates that the Pembroke table was John Townsend’s favorite form in the stop-fluted style.

The contained restless movement of the cyma-curved top is successfully balanced by a well formed case with central fan and a beautiful silhouette formed by bandy curved legs and a nicely scrolled apron.”

This Queen Anne cherry and applewood scallop-top dressing table belongs to a small, distinguished group of Connecticut River Valley scallop-top furniture from the mid-18th century; a design that spread from Hartford County and Middletown north to Greenfield, Massachusetts. It relates most closely to the Francis Group, associated with Wethersfield in the 1760s and named for the flat-top high chest that descended in the Timothy Francis family, as discussed by Thomas P. and Alice K. Kugelman with Robert Lionetti in Connecticut Valley Furniture, Eliphalet Chapin and His Contemporaries, 1750-1800 (2005), pp. 62-67, cat. no. 22.

Diagnostic analysis of the Francis Group features present on this table include a small, tightly carved shell with a recess narrower than the shell itself, a double ogee side apron profile, and canted ogee knee returns applied under the apron elements the authors identify as unique to this group. Construction details align as well: cherry primary wood with eastern white pine and tulip poplar secondary woods, exposed dovetail joinery for drawer dividers and muntins, and drawer runners tenoned into the backboard.

This dressing table compares closely to two other scallop top dressing tables also published in Connecticut Valley Furniture: Cat. 33 (p. 83), which has the same scalloped top layout, apron, and leg forms; and Cat. 23 (p. 65), which sold at Sotheby’s, New York, NY, on January 16, 1997, lot 203.

There are no warranties or representations of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or of any other kind— express or implied. Written and oral descriptions are our opinions and should not be construed as guarantees of age, condition, materials, authenticity, or any other characteristic. All items are available for your examination prior to bidding, and we strongly encourage in-person inspection. Your bidding will signify that you have either examined the items to your satisfaction or have chosen not to do so. Condition statements are offered as a courtesy and intended for general guidance only. They should not be considered complete, and not all condition issues may be noted in the report. Photographs are part of the condition report, and bidders should review them carefully. Our goal is to provide prospective bidders with accurate and detailed information, but no statement—written or oral—made by the auctioneer or staff shall be deemed a warranty or assumption of liability by Brunk Auctions or any seller represented by Brunk Auctions. All sales are final, and no refunds will be issued. We are always available to answer questions and discuss an item prior to auction, and encourage you to contact us. If you require absolute certainty in any area of authenticity or condition, and the available information leaves you in doubt, we recommend you refrain from bidding.

2. Bidding will begin at a price appropriate in the auctioneer’s discretion. The auctioneer always reserves the right to withdraw a lot for any reason they deems appropriate. At the auctioneer’s discretion, no bid of less than one half the low estimate will be accepted from any source: phone bidding, absentee bidding, internet bidding, or bidding in the gallery. All lots in this catalog are offered subject to a reserve, which is the confidential minimum hammer price at which a lot will be sold. In executing a reserve, the auctioneer has the right to bid on behalf of the Consignor, whether by opening bidding or continuing bidding in response to other bidders until reaching the reserve. If the reserve is not met, the Auctioneer has the right to withdraw the item from the sale.

3. Once we declare that an item is sold, we cannot reopen the bidding. It is the bidder’s responsibility to get our attention prior to our saying “sold”. We reserve the right to reject any bids deemed inappropriate or to withdraw any item(s) for lack of appropriate bids. If an item is withdrawn from the auction it will be offered again only at the auctioneer’s discretion.

4. Payment must be made by cash, approved check, wire transfer, or MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express credit cards. We reserve the right to require bank checks for large purchases. Buyers not known to us who wish to write a check must provide a current letter of credit from their bank guaranteeing funds for that account. Credit arrangements must be made by the Friday prior to the day of auction so bank statements can be verified. We reserve the right to not issue a buyer’s number or to withhold merchandise if appropriate credit has not been established. We require wire transfers form international buyers. First time buyers will be required to pay by wire transfer or cashiers check.

5. Payment is expected at time of purchase. Payment for successful absentee, phone bids and online bids are required within five business days of the auction.

Bidding on an item indicates the client’s acceptance of our Terms of Sale. Your signature on our Bid Form or acceptance of these terms through any online bidding platform constitutes permission to charge successful bids to credit cards if payment is not received within five days of the auction.

6. We are pleased to offer absentee and phone bidding at no additional charge for prospective bidders who cannot be present at the auction. Please complete the Absentee Bid and/or Phone Reservation form. Absentee bids are executed competitively and confidentially. All reservations for phone bidding are held in the strictest confidence and must be received by 5 pm the day before the auction. No additional phone bids can be accepted on the day of the auction including additions when speaking with a staff person on the phone. We can accept written absentee bids submitted on the Absentee Bid Form up to 30 lots before the item comes up for auction. Leaving an absentee or phone bid on a lot indicates your willingness to open the bidding at one half the printed low estimate, and gives the auctioneer the authority to open the bidding at that level. Brunk Auctions shall have the right to withdraw any item at any time for any reason and to default any sale in the event of an error or dispute.

7. In the case of identical absentee bids, the bid received first will prevail. Bids left on liveauctioneers.com are not executed until the item is offered in the live auction and the order in which they are received is not a factor. We sell 70-100 lots per hour. In our experience, cellular phones are not always dependable, and we recommend phone bidding reservations be made on land lines. We make every effort to honor all absentee and phone bid reservations, but we are not liable for any losses incurred as a result of failure to execute absentee bids or failed phone reservations.

Submitting absentee bids or bidding by phone does not imply an extension of credit. Please see numbers 4 and 5 above.

9. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser’s risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be quoted by our local UPS Store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment for shipping is received. Transport of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We will provide a list of transport companies if we are unable to ship via UPS/ FedEx/USPS. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.

10. Note to internet absentee bidders. We do not accept cut bids, (bids less than the last interval) from the floor or from phone bidders, and we do not accept them from internet bidders. Thus it is possible that a lot could go to another bidder for less than your absentee bid.

For example, if the bids are progressing in ten dollar increments, $50, $60, $70 and your absentee falls at $75, we will not take the bid since it is less than the $10 interval. We always encourage bidders to bid by phone or to leave absentee bids through our to avoid such a situation.

11. All purchases are subject to applicable state sales tax (state where purchased) unless the state Certificate of Resale tax form is fully and completely filled out and received prior to time of purchase. Resale tax numbers from other states are accepted. International buyers are responsible for tariffs, taxes, or assessments of shipped items to the buyer’s country.

12. Bidding on an item indicates your understanding and acceptance of these Terms of Sale. If a purchaser breaches any of these Terms of Sale, including the obligation to pay for purchased items, Brunk Auctions may seek all remedies under the law including canceling the

sale and reoffering the property without reserve.

13. You authorize us to re-sell on your behalf any item not picked up within sixty calendar days. The costs of storage, plus any other costs directly related to the item, and an auctioneer’s commission of 20%, will be subtracted from the proceeds unless other arrangements have been made with Brunk Auctions.

The minimum charge will be $50. The net proceeds will be mailed to your address as stated herein in full and final settlement of our obligations to you.

15. Export and Permits – It is the purchaser’s sole responsibility to identify and obtain any necessary export, import, firearm, endangered species or other permit for the lot. Any symbols or notices in the sale catalogue reflect Brunk Auctions’ reasonable opinion at the time of cataloguing and are for bidders’ general guidance only; Brunk Auctions and the Consignor make no representations or warranties as to whether any lot is or is not subject to export or import restrictions or any embargoes.

16. ◉Endangered Species – Certain property sold at auction, for example, items made of or incorporating plant or animal materials, irrespective of age or value, may require a license or certificate prior to exportation and additional licenses or certificates upon importation to another country. Brunk Auctions suggests that international buyers check on foreign governments’ wildlife import requirements prior to placing a bid. All buyers agree to comply with any and all domestic and international restrictions on the trade of endangered species as a condition of the sale. Please note that the ability to obtain an export license or certificate does not ensure the ability to obtain an import license or certificate in another country, and vice versa. It is the purchaser’s responsibility to obtain any export or import licenses and/or certificates as well as any other required documentation. In the case of denial of any export or import license or of delay in the obtaining of such licenses, the purchaser is still responsible for making on-time payment of the total purchase price for the lot. Although licenses can be obtained to export some types of endangered species, other types may not be exported at all, and other types may not be resold in the United States. Brunk Auctions is not able to assist the purchaser in attempting to obtain the appropriate licenses and/ or certificates, and there is no assurance that an export license or certificate can be obtained. Please check with our specialists if you are uncertain as to whether a lot is subject to these export/import license and certificate requirements, or any other restrictions on exportation.

Please note that bidders in New Jersey may not bid on any lots containing elephant ivory, mammoth ivory, or rhinoceros horn.

17. Due to the embargo on Persian carpets, international shipping is not available.

Brunk Auctions makes no warranty or guarantee whatsoever regarding the jewelry, its colored stones, diamonds, other gem materials, or metals, or as to their status as natural, treated, “earth mined”, manmade or other. Appraisals, descriptions, and photographs, are offered as a service and are not intended to be a complete analysis of the qualities and conditions of the jewelry. All identifications, information, weights, quality, cut, value, and other estimates are opinions, and are limited by the ability to examine and grade the items as mounted, as well as by their condition and cleanliness. All gems, colored stones, diamonds, “cultured or natural pearls, fresh water, south sea, Tahitian pearls”, and other materials used in jewelry, may be enhanced by a variety of treatments. Brunk Auctions makes no warranties or guaranties that any clock or watch is in working order.

19. Condition of Firearms: Brunk Auctions or its em

Terms of Sale ployees or consultants make no warranties or representations whatsoever concerning the operation of firing condition, safety to store or reliability of any firearm. Any firearm purchased is at the user’s risk. Brunk Auctions expressly disclaims any liability whatsoever for accident, injury or damage resulting to any person or property from the storage or use of any such lot. Brunk Auctions strictly complies with all state and federal regulations pertaining to the sale, transfer, and transportation of firearms. It is the sole responsibility of the buyer to know and comply with all state firearms regulations prior to bidding. No persons associated with Brunk Auctions or their consignors warrant the safety or shootability of any firearm we sell. Buyers wishing to fire any weapon purchased from Brunk Auctions are strongly advised to have the weapon(s) examined by a competent gunsmith prior to use.

20. Online registration and bidding approval is done at the sole discretion of the auction house. We recommend that online bidders sign up at least 24 hours in advance of the auction to allow for time to complete the approval process. We make no guarantees that new online bidders who register within 24 hours of the sale will be approved for bidding. After signing up to bid, new online bidders may receive a message requesting additional information; we cannot approve any client without the

requested information. First time participants bidding through any online platform will be limited to a maximum of $25,000 total in cumulative bids. Partievs who wish to bid on premium lots may be asked to submit a deposit by wire transfer. Correspondence between prospective clients and the Auction House must be established directly with Brunk Auctions through phone, fax, or one of the relevant email addresses. We make no guarantee that we can respond to requests submitted through third party messaging systems. Due to the high volume of inquiries made within 24 hours of the sale, we make no guarantee that clients who contact us during this period will receive a response. Bids left on LiveAuctioneers & Bidsquare are not executed until the item is offered in the live auction therefore the order in which those bids are received is not a factor. We will make every effort within reason to accept and process bids from online participants. Brunk Auctions will not accept liability for any bids missed due to clerking issues, operator error, equipment failure, connection delays, communication lapses, or technical malfunctions of any nature.

21. Coin grading is subjective and more ‘art’ than ‘science.’ As such, any descriptive or numeric grades given are supplied as a guide to our bidders and should not be seen as a guarantee to any grade that might be received

from a third-party grader or grading company. Our best effort has been put forth to give condition reports that are as accurate as can reasonably be expected, however, first-hand inspection to formulate one’s own opinion is always recommended. Attributions such as Sheldon, Overton, and Friedberg numbers have been assigned on many lots and every measure has been taken to ensure accuracy. However, bidders should use our highly detailed photographs to assess and attribute as errors in cataloging do sometimes occur.
