Picado Picado is inspired by the Aztec artisan custom of papel picado, a traditional folk art consisting of perforated paper with lace-like designs that are often used to decorate contemporary spaces for community celebrations and festivities such as weddings, baptisms, Día de los Muertos, or the changing of seasons.

The practice of papel picado folk art has a long and rich history dating back to ancient times. Indigenous nations, including the Aztecs, decorated pounded Amate bark textiles with melted rubber to create a raised dimensional effect. They then used natural pigments to paint complex symbols in their graphic languages to mark the significance of the occasion. An adaptation of this art form is still practiced today in Latin American towns including, San Salvador Huixcolotla in Puebla, Mexico.

The vibrant colors and designs for Picado are inspired by the celebratory nature of papel picado with intense yellow, orange, red and pink paired with muted blue and grey tones.

For our Picado collection, we have teamed up with The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC). NALAC is the nation’s premier nonprofit organization exclusively dedicated to the promotion, advancement, development, and cultivation of the Latino arts field. For each design from the Picado collection specified, ENCORE will make a donation to NALAC.
