WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN

A warm welcome to everyone who has made the journey from the Kent coast for tonight's fixture. With games in hand, the Cannons could well propel themselves into the play-off picture. Our aims are more modest, but after a tremendousand much needed - 5-1 win ten days ago against Littlehampton and a battling draw at Phoenix Sports on Saturday things look brighter for us.

Considering the number of experienced players absent it was an outstanding performance against Littlehampton and we had our chances to follow it up with another three points last Saturday.

Of course we can't rest on our laurels. The division is starting to throw up some strange results each matchday and our job of making sure we're still a Step 4 club next season still needs to be finished.

COME ON THE WASPS!

Front cover picture: Great to see nearly ALL the outfield players celebrating Alex Filipe's opening goal against Littlehampton.

MANAGER’S NOTES

Evening all and welcome to tonight’s rescheduled game against Hythe.

Another week has passed and another couple of injuries are hurting us, just when our tails were finally on the up with four points from the last two matches. We lost Terriq on Saturday and Glenn Wilson will be touch and go tonight after making his long awaited return.

We come into tonight’s game two unbeaten after Saturdays goalless draw against Phoenix Sports. If I’m honest I thought we did more than enough to win the game especially in the first half, but it was a classic case of ‘if you don’t take your chances you won’t win the game!’

There were lots of positives to take out of Saturday though, the clean sheet was huge given we only had one player out of our back four aged over 21. I thought they were all superb, especially Matt Weaire who has really shown over the last few games what a superb player he can be when he is playing with confidence.

Him and Jasper have really forged a great partnership at the back. Phoenix is notorious for being a horrible place to go and try and play any type of passing football. Years gone by have proven you quickly get drawn into a long ball game and usually the team who wins their battles and the first and second balls comes away the victor. I thought our lads did this throughout the game and still tried to be creative and, as I already mentioned, we failed to convert three or

four really good chances.

We will have to freshen things up tonight to make sure we have the legs all over the park to deal with Hythe’s physicality as we look to continue are unbeaten run.

As ever we thank all the travelling away fans who came on Saturday and we look forward to seeing you all tonight and again on Saturday for what are crucial back-to-back home games. Seven of our last ten matches are here at East Court and it’s important that we make that count.

Thanksagain,Drew.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Good evening everyone and welcome to East Court for tonight’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Hythe Town.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the Cannons’ players, management, supporters and Charman Gary Johnson and his fellow committee members as well as this evening’s referee Pablo Aguilar Cabanes and his assistants Paul Ransome and Thomas Murray. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.

Steven Watt’s Cannons snatched a draw on Saturday against their visitors Three Bridges, thanks to a Frannie Collin’s 87thminute penalty. The week before they lost 4-0 at home to Horndean. That followed wins against Herne Bay, Littlehampton and Burgess Hill.

Hythe sit in ninth place on 40 points from 25 matches, and although 13 points behind fifth placed Chichester City, they have six matches in hand, having played fewer games than anyone in the league.

The Cannons won today’s corresponding fixture in the opening match of the season at Reachfields, as well as our FA Cup Preliminary Round tie the following week so Drew Cooney and his team will be looking to make it third time lucky and avenge the two defeats this evening.

Drew’s Wasps were really impressive last time out here 10 days ago with a 5-1 win over Littlehampton Town but Saturday’s trip to Phoenix Sports was a dull affair in contrast on a very bobbly pitch and we had to settle for a goalless draw. One good sign was the return of Glenn Wilson who has

missed the previous six matches through injury although we lost Terrique HallAnderson early on in the match. We are still missing the likes of Tom Cadman, Bobby Dunn, Ryan Green and Michael Wilson.

After Saturday’s draw, we remain in 16th spot with 28 points from 28 games. We are at home again on Saturday when our visitors will be Burgess Hill, as well as next Tuesday when we host Ramsgate. We travel to Herne Bay on Easter Saturday and our visitors on Easter Monday are Erith & Belvedere (ko 3pm)

Thank you all for coming along this evening and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.

Enjoythematch

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

I'm going to talk about a couple of games played in the past on today's date – with help from the programmes we produced for the matches.

I'm going to start with East Grinstead v Eastbourne United on Saturday 19 March 2011 in division one (the top league) of the Sussex County League. We have an active front cover on the programme with a visiting goalkeeper cleanly catching a cross with a challenge from an East Grinstead player that I do not recognise.

Programme editor Bruce Talbot – still doing the job in 2024 – welcomes our visitors who have been having a tough time despite having won the league two years earlier in 2009. Team manager Tony Beckingham tells us that “it's great to be back at home” after a run of four consecutive away league matches – though he was happy with the three wins and one draw in that run of games. We had a couple of strong features in the 0-0 drawn match at Hassocks. Firstly keeper Dave Tidy played in goal some five years after what we thought was his last ever game for us. And secondly we had to play much of the second half with only 10 players. Nothing to do with a red card though – striker Liam Baitup was badly injured in a collision with the Hassocks keeper and was unable to continue. Unfortunately we had used all the substitutes we were allowed to use. But we held on to bring a point home.

The programme's league table shows that we were sitting nicely in fifth place and with games in hand over many of the other clubs. For example, Hassocks above were in third place but had played six more games than us. Eastbourne United were really struggling with just two wins leaving them at the bottom of the table with a gap of 10 points from the club immediately above them.

The game itself saw us looking like the bottom team in the first half which saw Eastbourne take the lead. Strong words at half-time did the job and by the end we had won 4-1 with goals from Peter Cooper, Ashley Alexander, Marc Pelling and Rikki Cable. (We still had to play the

away match down in Eastbourne.)

A few years later we have East Grinstead v Dorking on Saturday 19 March 2016 in the Isthmian League. Dorking had been promoted to the Isthmian League after winning the Sussex County League in the previous season and were doing well in their first season in the Isthmian, sitting in second place. However,r they were unlikely to catch league leaders Folkestone Invicta who were 16 points ahead of them.

The programme then looks back to a more recent game away to Ramsgate where manager Matt Longhurst tells us that “it was far from acceptable and the players understand that”. We had lost 4-0 and indeed we were having a horrible run. We had taken only one point from our last 12 games, which included a run of five consecutive matches without our scoring. The league table shows us down in three places off the bottom.

So surely our horrible run had to end sometime – was this the game? We certainly played much better, but again putting the ball into the opposition's net was difficult and we lost 2-0.

CLUB NOTICE

Supporter Behaviour

In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match.

Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA.

We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead.

As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.
