WELCOME TO EAST COURT Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to tonight's game against Wick, opponents of ours on many occasions during our County League days of course. Saturday brought more dissapointment against Crawley Down with a narrow defeat and precious few clear-cut chances created at the other end. It means we await our first league goal and the wait for a league win here at home now stretches to 647 - yes 647 days. A reminder that we head to Nyewood Lane on Saturday to face Bognor Regis in the preliminary round of the FA Cup before a first visit to Jarvis Brook next Tuesday in the Peter Bentley League Cup. Thanks for your support and, you never know, this could be THE night. We live in hope.

EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN

HISTORY PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST BY LESTER MEDCALF I’m going to share with you a couple of programmes from the past for games played on more or less the same date as today’s 2026 game. We’ll start with East Grinstead v St Francis on Saturday 18 August 2012 in division one of the Sussex County League. Richard Tramontin starts his chairman’s notes with a welcome to St Francis but quickly tells us that “both teams have had disappointing starts to the new season...” though neither team had played that many games. We had played three league matches with one win and two defeats while St Francis had only played twice and hadn’t got any points as yet. Richard's notes also tell us about a very different football match that was due to take place in a couple of weeks here at East Court - the cast of the London productions of Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera would play each other with the takings being given to Macmillan Cancer Support. Both operas were expecting to include a “sprinkling of celebrities.” Team manager Simon Funnell talked in a little more detail about our current form - though he had a rather different explanation for the performance against Dorking Wanderers. “Preparations were not good for this game as the traffic from all directions into Dorking was terrible and we had players turning up in dribs and drabs.” The programme does have match reports for the Dorking game (we lost 1-0 with Dorking scoring after about 30 minutes) and also for an earlier home game against Horsham YMCA. We had drawn 1-1 against them with Horsham YMCA scoring after about 20 minutes and Mannie Neville equalising for us with about 10 minutes left. The programme’s league table had us in 15th place and St Francis 18th - 22 in the league - but still very early in the season. So how did the game go? After some 10 minutes - with St Francis having had much of the game - Marc Pelling scored for us with a typical towering header. Shortly afterwards we lost two players because of injuries, but just before half-time we scored again through Adam Davies. Early in the second half St Francis had a player sent off and then right at the end Luke Piscina made it 3-0 to us. The score rather flattered us.

CUP SUCCESS AGAINST VCD Next I’m going to write about the programme we produced for East Grinstead v VCD Athletic on Saturday 19 August 2017 in the preliminary round of the FA Cup. VCD were in the same Isthmian League division as ourselves. Programme editor Bruce Talbot writes briefly about our last Isthmian League match at home to Molesey and he says that “it was certainly an entertaining game, with both sides going for it. Quite how it only finished 1-1 after both teams had scored in the first nine minutes was something of a head-scratcher.” Marcus Elliott had scored for us but Molesey only needed a minute or two after Marcus’s goal to bring things level. The match report in our programme for the VCD match gives much credit to the two goalkeepers in the Molesey game, but in the very last minute one of the Molesey defenders had mistimed a tackle which brought down one of our players on the half-way line. There was then a confrontation involving many of the players which led to the Molesey defender being booked. Perhaps the ref should have been harder with his decision, but it was agreed that it had been an excellent game played in excellent spirit. We have an Isthmian league table in the programme, though teams had only played two games. We had one point (from the Molesey game I’ve already talked about) and we’d also been to Guernsey to lose 4-2 with Marcus Elliott scoring both of our goals. VCD were at the bottom of the 24-team standings and were having a tough time, two games and eight goals conceded. And none scored. Let’s now tell you what happened in the VCD FA Cup match. VCD made a better start than ourselves but we were to score the first goal after some 30 minutes with Dean Brown heading home. A couple of minutes later and Marcus Elliott made it 2-0 after a mistake by the VCD keeper. But just before half-time VCD scored. The next goal would be important and for some while VCD looked most likely to score it. But it was our Tariq Straker who scored the next goal about halfway through the second half to give us a 3-1 lead. There was still time for VCD to score again - but it turned out to be the last goal in the match as we hung on for a 3-2 win. And the next round of the FA Cup was to see us travelling to Margate.
