A Year of Realization

From groundbreaking and scaffolding to concrete reality… your hospital campus has undergone a remarkable transformation. Thanks to the unwavering support of our community, Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital continues to stand among South Florida’s preeminent healthcare institutions.

Traveling down Meadows Road, the new Gloria Drummond Patient Tower now stands nearly complete. Inside, progress is well underway toward creating the state-of-the-art, high-performing hospital our patients and families deserve. The tower will feature all-private patient rooms, advanced surgical suites, and critical care units — all designed with the latest healthcare technology and evidence-based principles that foster healing.

Just around the corner, at the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute, the Barbara C. and Irving Gutin Center for Proton Therapy is set to open in early 2026. This cutting-edge facility will bring proton therapy — the most precise form of radiation treatment — to patients across South Florida. Unlike traditional radiation, proton beams stop precisely at the tumor site, enabling highly targeted treatment while minimizing harm to surrounding healthy tissue.

In research, a proud milestone came with the inaugural Scholars Program honoring three distinguished physicians from the Marcus Neuroscience Institute: G. Peter Gliebus, MD, Amy Laitinen, MD, and Frank Vrionis, MD. These leaders embody the excellence, dedication, and forward-thinking acumen that drive advancements in patient care. Their research is made possible through a generous philanthropic gift establishing the Scholar Fund. We are deeply grateful to Bernie* and Billi Marcus, whose transformative grant will fuel the groundbreaking projects of our first three Marcus Scholars.

Philanthropy empowers us to extend our impact, bring hope to those who need it most, and work toward a healthier tomorrow for everyone. It fuels our ability to advance groundbreaking research, champion essential programs, and deliver compassionate care to the communities we serve.

Together, we are changing lives in meaningful ways. On behalf of Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation, we offer our heartfelt gratitude for your generosity, your partnership, and your role in driving lasting, positive change.

Avid Traveler Finds Best Cervical Cancer Care Close to Home

In January 2022, Timea Keller, a 45-year-old teacher and mother of two, began experiencing unusual bleeding. Initially told it might be hormonal or vaccine-related, she didn’t worry—until six months later, while visiting family in Hungary, the bleeding intensified dramatically. Emergency surgery revealed stage 3 cervical cancer.

Timea’s doctors urged her to seek treatment in the United States, where more advanced options were available.

Having recently moved to Fort Lauderdale from Budapest, she and her husband turned to friends for help navigating the unfamiliar healthcare landscape.

That search led them to the Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute, part of Baptist Health Cancer Care—a center made stronger every day through the generosity of our donors.

“After visiting several hospitals, I chose Lynn Cancer Institute because they had the most advanced technology and a team that truly cared,” says Timea.

Her treatment was overseen by a dedicated multidisciplinary team: Dr. Thomas Morrissey (gynecologic oncology), Dr. Hina Saeed (radiation oncology), and Dr. Lloyd Berkowitz (medical oncology).

Because her cancer had spread to nearby lymph nodes, surgery wasn’t an option. Instead, her care team used advanced therapies made possible through donor-supported innovation— MRI-guided brachytherapy, intensitymodulated radiation therapy, and concurrent chemotherapy.

Timea’s journey wasn’t without challenges. One lasting side effect was premature menopause. But through it all, her care team never let her down— and neither did her family.

“My kids, ages 10 and 12, were amazing. They helped me laugh through the hard parts, took care of me, and grew closer as a result,” she shares.

Today, Timea is back to living life fully—working, traveling, and planning adventures with her family, including an upcoming trip to Great Britain for her sister’s wedding.

“The care I received saved my life,” Timea says. “Without the technology and teamwork at Lynn, I wouldn’t be here today. I am so thankful.”

Your Impact in Action

Timea’s story is a powerful reminder of what your support makes possible. Your generosity brings together compassionate teams, state-of-the-art technology, and advanced treatments that give patients the best chance for survival—and a full life after cancer.

A Lasting Legacy Made Simple: Support

Boca Raton Regional Hospital through beneficiary designations

Many assets, like retirement plans, IRAs, life insurance, donor-advised funds (DAFs), and annuities, aren’t governed by your will. These pass directly to named beneficiaries and are often easier to update than a will, making them powerful tools for legacy giving.

• Retirement Plans & IRAs: These are often taxable to heirs but tax-free when donated to the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation—making them ideal for charitable gifts.

• Life Insurance: Naming the Foundation as a beneficiary turns modest premiums into a significant gift. Plus, it’s revocable if your plans change.

• Donor-Advised Funds: DAFs offer flexibility to support the Foundation and other causes while providing immediate tax benefits.

• Commercial Annuities: Heavily taxed for heirs, annuities are well-suited for charitable giving to tax-exempt organizations like the Foundation.

Beneficiary Designations: How to Make It Happen

Making Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation the beneficiary of your retirement plan assets, IRA, life insurance, or commercial annuities is easy:

1. Contact the institution that controls the asset for a change-of-beneficiary form. Many have the forms on their website available for download.

2. Decide what amount of the account value you would like the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation to receive, between 1-100 percent.

3. Name Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation, Inc. as the beneficiary.

4. Return or submit the form as directed by the institution.

5. Notify the beneficiaries so they can claim the proceeds at the appropriate time.

Beneficiary Designations: Next steps

To learn more about the advantages of designating the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation as beneficiary of your retirement plan assets, life insurance, donor-advised fund, or commercial annuities, or to learn more about changing your designations, please contact the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation today.

Beating Breast Cancer: Inspired by Her Future Self

When life threw its biggest challenge her way, Jennifer Zawadzki found strength in the same message she built her business around—believing in the power of your future self.

Jennifer, known to her friends as Jen Z, is the founder of Future You Project, a company that sends inspirational gifts and letters to lift people up during tough times. Ironically, just as her business was taking off, Jen was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.

“I dug deep and pulled out every tool I had,” says the single mom, who received treatment at Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Baptist

Health. “Life has its ups and downs, but it’s about doing your best and honoring the journey—all of it.”

The Importance of Making the Right Connections

Her path to diagnosis started when she met Dr. Biana Manchik-Schwartz at Baptist Health. The two connected instantly—which proved invaluable when Dr. Manchik-Schwartz had to share the difficult news and move quickly to get Jen into care. “The collaboration here is incredible,” the doctor says. “Everyone works together to make things happen fast.”

The Journey Begins

At Lynn Cancer Institute, Ms. Zawadzki was impressed with the multimodality breast clinic, which allowed her to meet with a number of experts in one visit, including breast medical oncologist Dr. Jane Skelton, radiation oncologist Dr. Samuel Richter, and social worker Darci McNally, director of Oncology Support Services.

Jen’s treatment was long and grueling —months of chemo, surgery, radiation, and targeted therapy. Still, she kept her spirit strong, even running her business from bed on hard days. Today, a portion of Future You Project proceeds supports Lynn Cancer Institute, a full-circle moment for Jen.

Lessons Learned, Lessons Shared Her doctors say her positivity made all the difference. “She got dealt a bad hand, but she’s the kind of person who makes the best lemonade out of lemons,” says Dr. Samuel Richter, her radiation oncologist.

Now cancer-free, Jen continues immunotherapy and focuses on inspiring others. Her “future self”—once a source of hope—is now her reality.

When a Mystery Illness Actually Has a Fix: New Hope for a Patient with a Brain Condition

A relaxing swim in Puerto Rico turned into a life-changing moment for Susan Morfesi. Her legs suddenly stopped responding—and that frightening incident launched her into a 20year struggle with unexplained and worsening symptoms: frequent falls, memory lapses, loss of bladder control, and personality changes.

“I went from being very physically fit to being a mess,” she recalls.

Despite seeing multiple neurologists over the years, Susan was repeatedly misdiagnosed. Most concluded there was nothing they could do.

That changed when a fall in April brought her to Marcus Neuroscience Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital, part of Baptist Health. There, she met Dr. Frank Vrionis, chief of surgery, who finally gave her an answer—and hope.

“Susan had a very treatable condition called normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH),” explains Dr. Vrionis. “It’s often misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, but it’s one of the few reversible causes of dementia.”

With donor-supported advanced diagnostics and neurosurgical expertise, Susan underwent a shunt procedure to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid from her brain. Just two weeks later, she was walking again—and even shared her story at the Institute’s annual Brain & Spine Symposium to help raise awareness.

“I had seen eight neurologists without a clear answer,” Susan says. “When Dr. Vrionis said he could help, I couldn’t believe it.”

A New Beginning—Made Possible by You

Now 74, Susan is once again walking, talking, and regaining her independence. Her sister, Maryann, says the transformation is remarkable.

“She’s walking better than she has in years. Her brain is healing. The procedure was a great success.”

While Susan continues to recover and manage epilepsy from the delayed diagnosis, her quality of life has dramatically improved.

“I’m my old self again,” she says. “People even say my voice sounds different—happier.”

Why Your Support Matters

Your generosity makes miracles like Susan’s possible. With your support, the Marcus Neuroscience Institute continues to lead the way in complex neurological diagnoses and treatment—giving patients answers, solutions, and renewed lives.

Your gifts help fund the research and continuing education that clinicians need to provide the right diagnosis, the right treatment, and the right team at just the right time. Thank you for being a part of her healing journey.

• Twenty brand-new, oversized operating rooms designed for advanced robotic and minimally invasive surgery

• Adjacent pre-operative and postoperative units

• Sterile processing directly below the ORs for increased efficiency

This new surgical center will enable Boca Raton Regional Hospital to remain at the forefront of surgical innovation and patient safety.

Expanding Cardiac Care: Christine E. Lynn Heart and Vascular Institute

The Christine E. Lynn Heart and Vascular Institute will also undergo significant enhancements to support the growing volume of cardiac cases. The expansion includes a new cardiovascular outpatient clinic, as well as dedicated Intensive Care and Step-Down Units in the new Gloria Drummond Patient Tower— delivering compassionate, patientand family-centered care.

A Promise Kept—and a Future Transformed

Each of these extraordinary gifts has helped launch a new chapter in patient care at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. But it is not only the transformational donations that matter—every contribution, regardless of size, plays an essential role in building a healthier tomorrow. Together, we are truly keeping the promise.

Chicago Delivers Classic Hits and Lasting Memories at the 62nd Annual Ball

The 62nd Annual Ball was a night to remember—filled with exquisite cuisine, world-class entertainment, and an electric energy that lit up the room. Headlining the evening was none other than the iconic rock band Chicago, recipients of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. With over 120 million records sold, the legendary group brought the house down with an unforgettable performance, getting the crowd on their feet with classic anthems like “You’re the Inspiration,” “Colour My World,” “If You Leave Me Now,” “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is,” and “25 or 6 to 4.”

But the evening was about more than music—it was a heartfelt tribute to the spirit of generosity. We proudly

recognized honorary chairs Rocco and Mary Abessinio, along with Barbara Gutin and Cheryl Elliott, whose contributions made a profound impact on Boca Regional.

The 62nd Annual Ball celebrated timeless memories, meaningful recognition, and a shared commitment to making a difference.

26th Annual Golf Tournament: A Shining Success

The sun was shining on the beautiful courses of Boca West Country Club, and participants arrived early to pick up their premium amenity packages and enjoy brunch before embarking on a full day of activities.

This year’s event buzzed with friendly competition at every turn — from the “Hit It to Win It” challenge on the putting green to the exhilarating Helicopter Ball Drop over the driving range. On-course contests added to the excitement, including closest to the line, longest drive, low gross, low net, and a spirited “Rock Your Socks” showdown. Whether seasoned golfer or casual player, everyone found joy, laughter, and camaraderie throughout the day.

The celebration concluded with a vibrant awards dinner and program,

where we proudly honored our exceptional nurses and paid tribute to their remarkable contributions to our hospital community.

These socks were teed up and ready to party on and off the course! From birdies to bogeys, we gave socks a hole-in-one kind of style. Whether our sock participants were hitting the green or just green with envy, these socks brought the swing. Fairway flair had never looked so fun. The game was on—and the fashion was strong!

An Evening of Gratitude: Recognizing Philanthropic Leadership

The Philanthropy Guild Reception is a meaningful celebration of the generosity and vision of our Philanthropy Guild donors—individuals whose steadfast support enables Boca Raton Regional Hospital to deliver world-class care to our community. Their contributions help fund critical capital projects, pioneering programs, and essential services—from advanced technologies and life-saving equipment to patient care, research, education, community outreach, and outpatient therapies.

To illustrate the profound impact of this support, we invited grateful patient Jen Zawadzki—whose inspiring story was featured earlier in this newsletter— to share her personal journey. Her heartfelt remarks moved everyone in the room. By the end of her story, one thing was clear: our donors are changing lives in ways they may never fully realize.

Jen’s closing words captured the spirit of the evening: “Your support matters more than you know.” As we continue to expand our mission across

South Florida, we are reminded that none of it would be possible without the compassion and commitment of our leadership donors.

“Your support matters more than you know.”

Marcus Neuroscience Institute Inaugural Scholars Ceremony

In late June of 2025, Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation hosted a ceremony and reception in celebration of its inaugural Scholars Program. The evening’s honorees, G. Peter Gliebus, MD, Amy Laitinen, MD, and Frank Vrionis, MD, exemplify the excellence, dedication, and forward-thinking spirit that drive progress in elevating patient care.

The Scholars’ research is made possible through a significant philanthropic contribution to establish a Scholar fund. The Hospital is deeply grateful for the generosity and vision of Bernie and Billi Marcus,

whose grant to Marcus Neuroscience Institute, part of Baptist Health, will provide the resources for the research projects of our first three physicians.

As Marcus Neuroscience Institute’s Director and Chief Medical Executive, Warren Selman, MD, explains, “The Marcus Scholar appointment is one of the highest honors awarded to medical professionals within our institution. This distinction recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to medical science, providing meaningful support to further their innovative research and service.”

These Scholars, generously funded by the Marcus Foundation, Inc., are now able to learn more about the causes and treatment of disorders affecting the nervous system — not only from a scientific perspective but also by examining how society and systems contribute to these issues.

The Scholars program will expand the understanding of the structural, scientific, and societal underpinnings of health and disease while equipping participants with the tools necessary to influence care beyond the bedside.

Honorees (L to R): G. Peter Gliebus, MD, Lincoln Mendez, Amy Laitinen, MD, Frank Vrionis, MD, Wendy Elliot, Warren Selman, MD, Jack Ziffer, MD
