GLOBAL LEADERS IN PARTICLE THERAPY ENGINEERING
For 20+ years, BR+A has specialized in the development of Particle Therapy Facilities, domestically and internationally, resulting in over 5,000,000 SF of proton space designed and constructed.
We have been successful in providing engineering services to our particle clients worldwide, currently encompassing 18 countries. That success stems from our talented, and experienced, core group of engineering professionals who have been consistently working together on multiple proton projects over several years.
BR+A has been involved in the successful delivery of 36 proton centers that are currently treating patients with numerous other facilities–in various stages of design and construction–that will be brought ‘online’ to start treating patients through the end of 2024 and into 2026.
We collaborate directly with many of the leading proton and carbon manufacturers to assist them in developing new and/or updated Engineering Technical Documents based on BR+A’s significant particle therapy experience.
Our familiarity with how to deliver these highly complex facilities, combined with an in depth knowledge of the technical requirements of the proton equipment operating systems, uniquely positions our firm as the worldwide engineering leader in the design and delivery of very specialized and complex cancer treatment facilities.

WHAT IS PARTICLE THERAPY?
Isn’t a particle therapy system just like a big linac? Both systems make radiation for treating cancer, so don’t the same design rules apply?
While both systems are used to treat cancer, useful corollaries between design for linacs and for particle therapy systems end there.
Facility design for particle therapy tends to look more like a cross between medical and scientific design, rivaling in complexity that of a power plant, rather than a traditional healthcare project.
The space and subsystem requirements are vastly greater in a particle therapy system as opposed to a linac. Design, construction, and operational tolerances are also more complex and critical.

FACILITY DESIGN
BR+A core Particle Therapy Engineering Services offering provides custom design of Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Low Voltage, and Lighting design. As part of this service BR+A will work with the facility owner to assess the facility cost to operate and ensure that all strategies to make the facility as robust and reliable as possible, while economical to operate, are considered.
Not only do we understand how to implement the unique requirements of proton therapy vendors, we also know what requirements and systems will have an impact on long term system stability and performance.
FACILITY SYSTEM COMMISSIONING
BR+A’s in-house Commissioning Group (BR+A Cx) has the ability to provide Fundamental Building Commissioning and start-up testing services for the mechanical and electrical equipment systems directly supporting the proton operational system. BR+A Cx has provided services on 10 proton centers nationwide and understand the importance of a timely delivery to allow for the proton equipment installation process to begin.
BR+A Cx brings valuable lessons learned from other facilities and they work hand-in-hand with the construction team to achieve a successful Ready for Equipment Installation (RFEI) date.
Achieving a successful RFEI date is essential to meet the first patient treatment date. BR+A works to properly plan for, and mitigate, future risks.

INTERFACE DESIGN
Our experience has given us a comprehensive knowledge of how systems perform after years of use, and what impact building systems have on project cost, system reliability and performance, directly impacting a vendor’s cost to provide long term maintenance and operations of their proton therapy system.
This knowledge has led several major equipment manufacturers to contact us to create or refine their facility interface documents, resulting in end users having an easier time implementing proton vendor requirements. This has resulted in fewer RFIs and change requests, and an overall lower cost to implement vendor requirements.
Interface design support helps to lower cost of procurement and ensure system performance.
