Showcasing unsigned bands from Hull and beyond, as well a local artists and performers, Humber Street Sesh is a festival by the people of this city for the people of this city.

32’000 are expected to turn out, rain or shine, in support of the immense talent and creativity we have to offer.

We spoke to HSS Director Mark Page in anticipation of Saturday 6th August and his aims for the festivals yet to come.

HSS is in its 5th year. Is it everything you envisaged when you first decided to put on the festival?

Ha, no not all.

It was originally just a one-day festival to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the weekly Sesh night at The Polar Bear. We were hoping 1000 people might turn up to watch a few unsigned original bands from the region. When over 10’000 turned up, it took us all by surprise. We realised we were on to something, and decided to do it again for a second year, mainly to support the City of Culture bid. We were then truly astounded when 40,920 people came. It was after this year, that we knew we had to cap the festival on health & safety grounds, open it up across the marina, and try to professionalise what we were doing.

In its 3rd year, we aimed for sustainability through a mixed economy of ticket sales, private sponsorship, public funding and bar concessions. Moving in to the fifth year, working around the ongoing development on the Marina, we’ve increased the performance spaces, tied up some great partners in BBC Introducing (Humberside), and the amazing Strummerville Foundation and opened up more engagement with the industry.

Is the Festival in 2016 everything we envisaged at the beginning?

NO: it’s grown beyond our wildest dreams, and though we’re still learning every year, we harbour ambitions for it to grow bigger to help put Hull and its amazing creativity on the map.

It’s been a fantastic year for some of our local artists. LIFE and Vulgarians have performed on BBC Introducing stages, with other notable bands being mentioned in NME and other national music press. Could you even pick a top 5 from the huge line-up of the day?

Yeah, at random. Ha. With 214 acts performing over the day across 14 stages, there’s a lot of choice and variation of styles.

Here’s five off the top of my head that I will be trying to catch on the day for sure.

Which are the new bands we need to see?

Vulgarians Fronteers Cannibal Animal Sister Strange Lumer Of course, HSS isn’t just about the music – it’s an all-round local art installation.

Art plays such a great role at HSS, and compliments the music perfectly.

The city is awash with talented creatives and at HSS we try our best to give them a platform.

This year we can promise Street Art in abundance with Street Performances, Light installations, Photo Exhibitions, Chalk Walking, Facepainting and Graffiti, as well as the return of such Art luminaries as Anna Bean and the legendary Pinky.

The festival itself keeps getting bigger and bigger. Does HSS have the potential to be the largest unsigned music festival on offer in the UK? I think we can claim that HSS is pretty unique in the fact that over 200 emerging acts perform over 12 hours to a huge footfall, but I’ll leave others to supply the ‘tagline’. As the festival is very ‘hullcentric’ we’ve started to lean more towards engaging with the Music Industry nationally and this year we will be inviting more exciting bands from across the country in preparation for our ambition to turn HSS in to a city wide event come 2018 on par with Tramlines, Live In Leeds, and Great Escape.

The future’s looking bright if we can sustain the fabulous support we’ve received so far in the city.

The focus may be on 2017 as the City of Culture year, but what follows that is what we need to address. For now, we just keep keeping on.

HSS: Pick Your Sound Words | Nix Chidlow

With 200+ bands strewn across 14 stages, you’re not going to see everything that Humber Street Sesh has to offer. Fact.

They’ve more platforms for more music and more space for more art than previous years. It’s a festival which I find myself planning as soon as the line-ups are announced.

For an acoustic sound, visit the Amy Johnson Marquee and Speakeasy Stage. There you’ll enjoy the wonderful personalities of the likes of Emma

Quicksilver

Kings on the Main Stage, as well as The Mighty & The Moon, The Hillbilly Troupe and Emma King performing elsewhere.

On the other hand, if you’re into a heavier sound, then you could head over the Rock Stage for mixture of Liberatae Mae, Age of Atlas and Underkript. There’s also newer bands Vulgarians, who have Fee, Tom Skelly, Emily taken this year to huge heights, Moulton and Tim Mellins, and Cannibal Animal, all of which have voices and lyrics with an ultimate display of enerwhich aim straight for the heart. gy, performing on other stages.

There’s also the eccentric The For those interested in Hip Hop, Dyr Sister whose unique House and Electric, there’s loads performance is something every- this year. which is celebrating Hip Hop with headliners Pearl’s Cab Ride, master of words Chiedu Oraka, and an aftershow with Steve Cobby and Bliss.

For me, I love the rock sound in all its glorious guitar-fuelled forms: Avalanche Party who are visiting us from the North Yorkshire Moors; My Pleasure, who tells stories of the everyday man through clever lyrics; and the beautifully ferocious La Bête Blooms over on the Strummerville Stage.

Picking a stage and sticking to it will not be enough for this festival, especially as there is so much more between the stages to see and enjoy. And no matter how well you plan, there will be that band which catches you unawares – the one which will make your must-see list for next year’s HSS.

HSS: Nix Recommends

Five years of HSS and every year I find someone new and amazing that I add to my list of favourite local bands. So every year it gets harder and harder to select the five I have to – without a doubt, regardless of circumstances – see.

Making this year even harder, two of my favourite bands are performing in the headline slot.

So I advise catching one or the other, because I’ll be struggling with the decision right up until the minute the first song starts.

Counting Coins are taking the main slot on the University of Hull Main Stage. Ska-punks, they set any stage alight with their charisma and never-ending energy. Last year they had the people waltzing along the Marina and I trust they’ll be making as huge an impact this year. It’s been too long

since I’ve seen these guys, dancing until my feet feel as though they’re tearing themselves from my ankles.

But then I also adore DIY punks LIFE, who heading the Alternative Main Stage. They’ve had an amazing year, performing on BBC Introducing stages and having their tunes spun by many big names in national radio.

It’s going to be tough to miss either band’s performance, but that’s the trouble with having such talent in the same city.

One band I haven’t seen for a while, who stole my heart when they stepped off-stage at the weekly Sesh to perform a final song amid the audience, is Laurel Canyons. They’ve got a sound which transforms throughout their set; fierce instruments which support the smooth voice

of Jake Cope. I have to take this opportunity to see them again.

A new band made of some legendary faces is the Loudhailer Electric Company, who are performing in the Amy Johnson Marquee. As with all the bands on this list, they’re just pure energy and love of music.

No stage is small enough because they seem to extend the space around them and flood it with their enthusiasm for what they do.

And, finally, the band I never miss at festivals: Streaming Lights.

Silly, spontaneous and superb, they can turn the most miserable of days into the most fun-filled. And with British weather being what it is, it’s always a good idea to plan a little sunshine into the day.

Hull Jazz Festival lands for its annual summer session this July, kicking off on Thursday the 21st and running through to Sunday the 24th with an eclectic and exciting line-up spread across three different venues.

Friday the 22nd sees saxophonist YolanDa Brown perform her “Reggae Love Songs” show at Hull Truck, while Kardomah 94 (a venue making its festival bow this year) hosts the outstanding gypsy jazz band Daj Dook – who include among their number the talented Hull-born violinist Matt Holborn.

super-group Refix Project – featuring Lyn Acton (Pearl’s Cab Ride), Audrey Okyere-Fosu (ex Back To Base), Endoflevelbaddie, Dave Gawthorpe (Hillbilly Troupe et al) and Jay Moy (Unitone). Support comes from Pearls Cab Ride themselves (so a busy night for singer Lyn!) and rapper Chiedu Oraka, with the Onion Club DJs on the turntables spinning soul, funk, jazz and other grooves.

The festival launches on the Thursday at Hull Truck Theatre, with four-piece outfit Minima playing a live musical soundtrack At the same time as Daj Dook are to accompany F.W. renowned sax player (and regular visitor to these parts) Snake Davis.

Watson and Davis appear again with Burden Of Paradise at Fruit later in the day, part of a double bill which also includes Stuart McCallum’s “City” – an ambient electronica jazz soundscape (we are told) which could well turn out to be the surprise package of the festival. Miss it at your peril.

Back at Hull Truck, Saturday’s early evening festival headliner is none other than saxophonist Jean Toussaint (a former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers,

no less), who presents “Roots & Herbs: The Blakey Project”, exploring and interpreting the work of his illustrious former band leader. If that weren’t enough, evergreen acid jazz legends the James Taylor Quartet will close proceedings on the Saturday of the festival.

The festival finishes on Sunday July 24th with the return of their previously successful (and refreshingly innovative) Jazz Festival Brunch, at which guests can enjoy the festival brunch menu served up by Hull Truck whilst simultane-

ously soaking up some intimate live music, this year featuring world music group Manjula, who fuse Portuguese, African, Latin, and Indian sounds to create their own unique blend of global jazz.
