NYSDA and Foundation Salute CE Achievers
And the results are in! Continuing education (CE) hours accumulated by NYSDA members have been counted and, based on credits submitted to the NYSDA CE Registry for 2020, the top achievers are Richard Faber of Suffolk County (4,000 hours), followed by Peter Blauzvern of Nassau County (3,500) and Frederick Marra of Third District (3,500).
Each year, NYSDA recognizes its members who earn 100, 300, 500, 1,000 and every 500 hours of CE after that as recorded within the CE Registry. This year, the breakdown by numbers of members at each level is as follows: 100 (59); 300 (58); 500 (82); 1,000 (46); 1,500 (12); 2,000 (7); 2,500 (4); 3,500 (2); and 4,000 (1). All awardees receive certificates from NYSDA, which are presented by the awardee’s component.
NYSDA was the first professional organization within New York State to mandate that its members amass a certain amount of continuing education as a prerequisite for relicensure in accordance with its belief that lifelong learning is related to practicing dentistry in the best possible way.
Dr. Faber, this year’s highest CE earner, put it this way: “CE is one of the best ways to keep current with what is going on in dentistry. Attending CE courses gives you the most up-to-date information when it’s relevant. Eventually, information gets published in journals, but it’s not really current, since it takes time to reach publication. I have been in practice and dental education for over 46 years and always found CE courses to be a great way to interact with colleagues and exchange information.”
Dr. Blauzvern said: “Over 3,500 continuing education hours later and I have gained a great wealth of knowledge, wonderful new and old friends, all of which have given me the wherewithal to perform challenging dental cases and provided me with years of experience and growth. The time has flown quickly. Enjoy your journey!”
Rounding out our top three CE earners, Dr. Marra added: “My four years of dental school, followed by my year of general practice residency at the University of Pennsylvania, provided an arduous yet stimulating learning environment that forged my passion for my profession. Early in my career it became apparent that lifetime learning was the means for recreating that environment in my solo general practice in the small town that I grew up in. Continuing education brought me knowledge, confidence, understanding, improved communication skills and, most of all, camaraderie among likeminded peers seeking the same values.”
CE credits are entered year-round for members. Dentists can submit credits that are up to a year old by mailing certificates of course completion to NYSDA: Continuing Education, 20 Corporate Woods Blvd., Suite 602, Albany NY 12211; by faxing them to (518) 465-3219; or by sending them electronically via the NYSDA website, www.nysdental.org.
