Beyond Diversity Unity and Innovation

Dentistry must focus diversity initiatives upon universal human traits and opportunities for growth and reform.

orporate mandates. Task forces. School programs. Well-intentioned diversity strategies that fail to some degree because they lack the correct focus. Despite the dental profession’s efforts to date, the current dental student and dentist workforce profiles do not reflect the diversity of the U.S. population.[1] Racial, ethnic and cultural oral healthcare disparities continue to plague our patient population.[2] Current initiatives often view diversity too much as an end in and of itself and not enough as a catalyst to unify and innovate professional development. Dental practice owners, dental school administrators and organized dentistry policymakers must shift their focus on diversity away from superficial differences and compliance requirements toward fundamental traits in common and opportunities for growth that capitalize upon unique abilities.

Successful diversity strategies should incorporate four directives to advance these goals: 1. Emphasize human similarities above individual and group differences.

2. Gain consensus on common goals that respect disparate opinions and diversity of thought.

3. Empower individuals with the authority to constructively shape policies and procedures rather than imposing policies and procedures that define the individuals.

4. Invest in the resources, developmental tools and best practices that facilitate growth and position participants to succeed.

Each of these directives requires a choice of perspective that lies along a continuum between two

extremes. Rarely does an extreme point of view address the competing interests the continuum represents. The entity initiating the overall mandate or program must strike the correct balance between the continuum extremes for each directive to facilitate a successful strategy for that entity’s specific challenges.

Celebrate Similarities: Human Traits Continuum A strong emphasis on human similarities over differences will unify diverse groups in this currently divisive time. Humans possess significantly more traits in common than traits that differ. We all share the same DNA, expressed in our similar physical, mental, and social needs and qualities. These universal traits define who we are and transcend our differences.[3] Concomitantly, many of our diverse qualities represent unique abilities and innovative viewpoints. Hence, on a Human Traits Continuum, which stretches from a focus solely upon shared fundamental traits on one extreme to a focus solely on superficial and artificially constructed differences on the other, emphasis should fall as close to the similarities extreme as possible while still recognizing special diverse qualities.

We lose the value of promoting diversity when we celebrate our differences to the exclusion of our sameness. Ultimately, diversity initiatives should ensure that our superficial and relatively less important differences do not interfere with our right and ability to express our fundamental selves. A renewed

focus on our similarities will unify, not further divide, and set the table for group consensus on common goals.

Gain Consensus: Shared Template Continuum Diverse groups comprising individuals who celebrate their similarities must next embrace common goals to avoid unhealthy conflicts of interest and hostilities that divide and impede growth. Gaining consensus on what these groups intend to accomplish in any endeavor makes it more likely they will succeed.

Historically, immigrants assimilated into the existing American culture. This process suppressed many of their diverse thoughts, opinions and customs when taken to an extreme. Today, diverse groups more often retain their customs and traditions and resist assimilation. Failure to assimilate, however, results in a disconnected, multicultural patchwork, with groups unlikely to agree upon a shared template on any issue.[4] Ideally, on a Shared Template Continuum, with the extremes representing total assimilation versus multicultural independence, we should encourage the level of assimilation necessary to achieve consensus on common goals without suppressing diverse thoughts and opinion. Dentistry needs the open dialogue essential to consensus and the mutual respect and trust it creates to form the basis for relationships, not only in dental schools, the dental workforce and organized dentistry, but also in dentist-patient relationships. As we expand trust in diverse dentist-patient relationships, it will serve to reduce oral health disparities.

Empower Individuals: Authority Continuum Individuals who share a template to accomplish common goals must command sufficient authority over their professional environment to put policies and procedures into effect. On an Authority Continuum, at one extreme, an entity’s policies and procedures control and shape its individuals. Diverse individuals remain marginalized without the power or means to affect change. They ultimately become a cost center, and the diversity strategy is then deemed a failure.[5] At the other extreme, the entity positions diverse individuals to shape and define entity policy and become a growth center. On this continuum, we must go beyond mere inclusion and empower individuals with sufficient authority to implement their policies and procedures to the level that enables them to achieve their common goals.[6] Invest in Growth: Implementation Continuum Once diverse individuals who celebrate their similarities reach consensus on an issue and have authority to control policies and procedures necessary to reach common goals, we must provide the resources, developmental tools and best practices to implement their strategies. Regretfully, many administrators develop diversity measures merely to comply with self-regulatory mandates or “corporate social responsibility” guidelines and fail to provide adequate support for growth.[7] On an Implementation Continuum, this view rep-

resents the extreme of achieving diversity only to comply with mandates. Ideally, we need to view diversity initiatives closer to the other extreme, i.e., to achieve growth, and then invest the financial resources and managerial support necessary to succeed.

The dental profession must move beyond the flawed premise that complying with diversity mandates alone will bring people together and eliminate healthcare disparities. Diversity is not an event, but a process. Attaining diverse dental student and workforce profiles stands only as a first step in the process. Diverse groups must embrace human similarities and unify, gain consensus on common goals, earn the authority to shape policies and procedures, and utilize the necessary resources and developmental tools to implement innovative growth.

Ultimately, the mutual respect and trust engendered among diverse individuals as a result of this process will enable dentistry to meet its professional duty to equitably serve all members of our society. Our destination: unity and innovation. Our vehicle: diversity.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (and Greatness) As NYSDA moves to correct deficiencies in its makeup, it also pays homage to a fallen leader.

his column was supposed to be about diversity, equity and inclusion, in keeping with the theme of the January edition of The Journal.

However, sometimes tragic events intervene and history demands an initial focus on something else: greatness. In this case, it is the greatness of Dr. Mark Feldman.

NYSDA lost this extraordinary, unique leader on Thanksgiving Day—a terrible irony, but a reminder of things for which to be thankful. And all of NYSDA can be truly thankful for Dr. Feldman. I have known many great NYSDA leaders over many years, and count a good number of them as dear friends, but Mark was a legend. His resume is unparalleled: treasurer and president at the local, state and national levels of the tripartite system; and executive director at both the state and national levels. No other person has ever served in all those capacities in the entire history of organized dentistry.

What really set Mark apart among leaders was his continual mission to make things better for his profession. Mark never wavered from trying to do what was best, right and just for dentistry and patients. Even if some effort did not succeed as he had hoped, that desire to do the right thing always remained his goal.

Coupled to his unmatched integrity and ever-present compassion and kindness for others, Mark was that rarest of things: a truly good man. As befitted his goodness, he cared deeply

about the subject matter of this Journal—diversity, equity and inclusion—something he so much wanted NYSDA to embrace and improve.

And so, he helped make possible the launch of NYSDA’s first-ever Task Force on Diversity and Inclusiveness in 2021.

Growing Impatience Diversity, equity and inclusion has become a major theme in law these days, as has the related topic of environmental, social and governance (ESG) corporate concerns. The concept of corporate responsiveness to larger social and ethical issues has been a matter of concern since corporations were first formed. However, there has been increasing attention to it lately, fueled by public impatience with the slow pace at which corporations have been moving on such matters and the confluence of perceived crises in climate, public health and racial/ethnic/gender equity.

California has even enacted a law requiring that corporate boards provide seats for women and persons from underrepresented communities.

New York State has not gone so far yet, requiring only that for-profit corporations report on the number of women on their boards, leading to a study of the inclusion issue but no mandatory board membership requirements yet.

California often legislates like it is demented, not infrequently later regretting choices made, whereas New York often legislates at a glacial speed, not

NYSDA infrequently defying expectations that the state lead the way on critical issues. It could be said that California gets things started, but New York gets things right.

Over a year ago, then incoming NYSDA President Craig Ratner asked what I would identify as critical issues for the Association. Number one on my list was diversity, and I noted that NYSDA was the only professional association I knew of that had no committee or task force even looking at diversity issues.

The word “diversity” hardly escaped anyone’s lips and those who looked at NYSDA leadership through the years could hardly jump for joy over any major diversity accomplishments. NYSDA even took a very long time to elect its first female president when other professional associations had already made that a fairly routine occurrence. NYSDA showed no awareness that entire months or other time periods were nationally devoted to honoring various diverse heritages, such as African-Americans, Women, Asian/Pacific Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Older Americans, Jewish Americans, LGBTQIA Americans, Native Americans, Disabled Americans, and many others, even if only for a day. Many groups were identified specifically for health outreach and not just historical outreach.

NYSDA basically ignored them all.

All that has changed now, with NYSDA forming its first task force devoted to diversity and inclusion. It is high time, because claims of discrimination and attention to health equity are skyrocketing, particularly during the COVID pandemic, when many people are on heightened alert about their personal and employment rights. Some might feel that NYSDA has been clueless about diversity, equity and inclusion, but the corporate reality is that when you have not had complaints and have a record of handling all governance matters evenhandedly, there is a tendency not to think of diversity as an issue because it doesn’t manifest as an immediate problem.

However, that is now seen as a form of complacency that is no longer societally acceptable. The legal picture in New York is bound to change in favor of greater emphasis and even mandatory requirements over diversity, equity and inclusion for corporations. Not-for-profit corporations like NYSDA are not a main focus in discussions on this topic because concerns with for-profit corporations are much greater (typically, the more money involved, the higher the stakes and priorities).

But the trend to address diversity in corporate governance will eventually come to all business organizational structures.

A Plan for Action What can dental practices do about diversity, inclusion and equity? First, start thinking about it and make it a part of the general consciousness of the practice (even if no specific steps are required). Keep in mind that race and ethnicity are only a part of the diversity equation. Diversity also needs to

address other protected classifications like sex, age, religion, disability status, gender identity and sexual orientation.

Second, make sure that any policies you adopt are clear and are applied consistently. Ambiguity and inconsistency are the enemies of diversity, inclusion and equity.

Third, do not mistake diversity, inclusion and equity with quotas and preferences. While quotas and preferences may be well-intentioned, they are likely to lead to other types of discrimination problems. These kinds of rigid prescriptive solutions tend to replicate the problems of a lack of diversity, inclusion and equity. In other words, tunnel vision and handcuffs do not equate to awareness and sensitivity.

Fourth, think about using available training programs on diversity, inclusion and equity issues. While there is no mandate yet on this subject, as there is with sexual harassment training, it may be useful to get ahead of the curve. It is not particularly difficult to incorporate such training into existing sexual harassment training. Periodically, the New York State Legislature floats bills to require dentists and other healthcare professionals to obtain such training, but those bills have never advanced.

Finally, some practices may consider using an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to help with recruiting, hiring and evaluating employees. AI can be used to factor in diversity, inclusion and equity as employment factors, but AI can also be a source of problems itself. This is a far more complex topic than can be addressed here, but nearly everyone agrees that you have to use AI employment tools with great investigation and circumspection. While an AI tool may seem to be objective and neutral on its face, it has been found that it may be designed with its own inherent biases that prove disastrous in practice. You may think you have the safety of machine-generated fairness only to find you have inadvertently installed embedded discrimination.

A Fitting Legacy The key takeaway from all of this is that just starting to think about diversity, equity and inclusion is an important first step; thought and awareness should precede action. Actions should be carefully thought through because there are no easy, quick-fix actions, but there are steps in the right direction that will help avoid going in the wrong direction, and will thereby promote attaining genuine diversity, inclusion and equity goals.

A great legacy for Dr. Mark Feldman is that through his innate love for his profession and his own personal goodness, he took those initial steps to start NYSDA down the path of diversity, inclusion and equity. A Call to Do Better Addressing Diversity Within the Dental Profession Fabiola Milord, D.D.S., M.P.H.

Current systems have not been successful in addressing the existing racial inequities between black dental professionals and other racial groups. These dentists in particular seem to have less visibility and representation in organized dentistry. At no time has this been more obvious than during the COVID-19 pandemic, when African-American professionals were not as prominently featured among those offering their viewpoint and expertise. The following editorial provides insights regarding the topic of diversity in order to gain perspective into a situation that has existed for far too long.

DURING THE 2021 NYSDA HOUSE OF DELEGATES meeting, something momentous happened. The 102-member body voted to recognize February as Black History Month by having an African-American Speaker of Excellence present information for continuing education credit. In addition, NYSDA will be highlighting a black member dentist who has significantly contributed to the dental profession. While the proposal stirred significant discussion, the vast majority of the House was in favor of the groundbreaking change, forging a path for black dentists to have a seat at the table of organized den-

tistry, where they will be acknowledged for their efforts, and serve to raise awareness within their areas of knowledge and expertise.

A 2012 University at Albany report, supported by the New York State Department of Health and the New York State Education Department,[1] finds that “Black/African Americans were underrepresented among New York’s dentists relative to the state’s population (3% compared to 14%), as were Hispanics/Latinos (5% compared to 18%).” To further emphasize the point of black contributions, a 2020 Health Policy Institute study released by the American Dental Association[2] indicates that the vast majority of Medicaid providers across the U.S. (63%) are black, followed by 51% Hispanic. This disproportion of treating the underserved is but a hint of the imbalance within oral healthcare, as well as within the profession itself, both statewide and nationally.

So, how do we go about improving representation within the profession? This has been debated and thought about by many experts; however, the results seem to be minimal and sporadic at best.

expenses. Dental school is a costly four- to six-year undertaking running well into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Understandably, this is a challenge for any dental student regardless of race; however, given the well-documented wealth gap between blacks and whites, the challenges for blacks are even greater.[6,7] A broader range of public/private partnerships involving grants, low-interest student loans, and student loan forgiveness before, during and after dental school for low-income minority students needs to become part of the conversation in order to shore up financial assistance for future black dental professionals.

A Top-Down Approach As previously mentioned, the discussion about what to do and how to address these issues has been ongoing and has taken different forms at both the state and local level. NYSDA has convened a Diversity and Inclusion Task Force to tackle these concerns. The American Dental Association runs its Institute for Diversity in Leadership.[8] It also led Diversity Summits in 2010,[9] 2015[10] and, most recently, at its 2021 Annual Meeting.[11] While these initiatives and efforts are admirable and worthwhile, they have done little to move the needle in producing significant change in minority recruitment of both students and faculty.

An Individualized Approach An individualized approach by those in visible positions of influence engaging students or dentists may gain more traction in tackling this issue. The idea of one dentist mentoring another so as to encourage him or her to assume responsibility, join the profession, move up the ladder, espouse leadership and encourage those with potential may be one such way to begin the process and gain momentum. Also, at the student level, the idea and aspiration of managing one’s own business should be emphasized, making it a valuable goal to be sought after and, ultimately, fulfilled.

The need to incorporate more minority dentists into the profession cannot be overstated or clearer. A commendable start is the recognition of Black History Month. The latest in current events played a role in exposing the sharp underrepresentation that exists. The necessity for these conversations now will, it is hoped, result in better diversity and representation in the future.

America, We Need to Invest in Dental Care for all of our Children William J. Maloney, D.D.S. Poor oral/dental care for children sets the stage for a lifetime of costly and painful dental issues and has a deleterious effect on the individual’s systemic health and overall quality of life. The oralsystemic health connection has been well-documented in the scientific literature in the past few decades. It is now known that deficient oral/dental health can set off a cascade of poor health throughout one’s life, with the resultant negative socioeconomic issues that are all too often associated with poor health.

In the United States, there are a large number of state and federally funded children’s dental health programs. However, many children cannot access care for a variety of reasons. It is imperative that all children receive a high standard of dental care by eliminating barriers, such as social inequality, familial economic status, separation of dentistry and medicine, and lack of public education about the impact of good oral and dental health on the overall development of children.

The United States cannot afford to provide anything less than top-quality healthcare to its children, as they are our nation’s future. This country must invest in premium dental care for youth and work to integrate pediatric medicine and dentistry in order to reduce the negative socioeconomic impact of poor oral health in later life. It is of utmost importance that we increase access to care and to that end, there must be a dramatic increase in dentists’ participation in publicly funded preventive dental services, which, in turn, would result in significant financial savings for the various government agencies.[1]

A Tragic Short-term Consequence Untreated dental decay can lead to many deleterious health conditions. A tragic and well-publicized example is that of Deamonte Driver, a 12-year-old black boy living outside of Baltimore, MD. Deamonte had a badly decayed maxillary left first molar, which is one of the first permanent teeth to erupt into the oral cavity, at around 6 years of age.[2] Deamonte started complaining of a terrible headache to his mother, Alyce. Alyce had difficulty navigating the bureaucratic system, attempting to find dental care for her son. Deamonte eventually received dental and medical attention but, unfortunately, it was not in time. Deamonte died and became a horrific example of the defects in our nation’s ability to provide quality dental care to each and every one of our children.

His mother’s difficulties finding a dentist to treat Deamonte included inability to find a participating Medicaid dentist and trouble completing the burdensome paperwork of the Medicaid system.[2] Deamonte developed meningitis, was hospitalized and had two brain surgeries as the infection from his tooth spread to his brain. It seems almost incomprehensible that a child living within a short distance of our nation’s capital could die of a decayed tooth because access to care for youths dependent on Medicaid is limited.

The tragic example of Deamonte Driver illustrates the most severe short-term consequence of a lack of access to dental care.

Throughout my career I have also witnessed many long-term consequences which are wholly unacceptable in 21st century Amer-

ica. These long-term consequences have a deleterious effect on the individual’s health and education, as well as on the nation’s financial well-being.

The Oral-systemic Health Connection The oral-systemic health connection is a prime example of another long-term impact of lacking pediatric dental services. It refers to oral/dental conditions that can affect an individual’s systemic health. This connection is well-documented in the scientific literature and is an integral aspect of my assertion about the importance of providing top-quality oral/dental care to America’s children.

It is imperative that we evaluate the significance of this link in assessing the importance of providing proper preventive services and necessary dental treatments to children in an effort to avoid a lifetime of devastating medical ailments. Many oral infections, such as periodontal disease, have been linked to the development of medical issues such as diabetes,[3] low birth weight infants, and respiratory[4] and cardiovascular diseases.[3-10] Therefore, it is of paramount importance to instill, at a very young age, good oral care habits, such as proper brushing and flossing techniques.

An example of the importance of the oral-systemic health connection to an individual’s overall health is the harmful changes Porphyromonas gingivitis, a bacterium found in the periodontal sulcus, causes in the human vasculature. This bacterium can result in potentially life-threatening conditions.[11] The evidence is clear that good oral hygiene can aid in avoiding these cardiovascular issues in many individuals. Obviously, it would be prudent for American society to make a concerted effort to decrease the impact oral/dental conditions have on systemic morbidities. This would not only decrease untold suffering and pain but eliminate an incalculable financial cost from the nation’s healthcare expenditure.

Inadequate Dental Care in Childhood Causes and Consequences The true tragedy of the death of Deamonte Driver and the suffering of many of America’s youth is that they are preventable.

The poor oral health of many youngsters is not entirely due to a lack of funding. Numerous states have dental programs that are meant to ensure good oral health in children. Unfortunately, many children miss out on these well-intentioned programs because their poor dental/oral health is caused by multiple factors.

These include no awareness of available dental services, transportation issues and lack of parental engagement in their children’s oral health.

A report from the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General analyzed the utilization of dental services in four states by children from low-income families who had Medicaid dental coverage. Seventy-five percent of these children did not receive all of the dental procedures required by

law, and 25% did not see a dentist at all.[12] We must, as a nation, examine the causes of poor access to care. Various data point to the limited utilization of dental services by children from poor socioeconomic backgrounds,[12-20] with the oral health disparity being greatest when the children are from non-white families.[15] While a study by Jihong et al.[13] found that 26.9% of American children did not see a dentist at all in the previous year for preventive treatment. This cannot be viewed as acceptable.

Lack of access to dental care is a major impediment to good dental health for children. The causes of poor access must be addressed. They include lack of awareness of no-cost dental programs, limited ability to travel to a dental clinic and a small number of dental providers due to low reimbursement rates. Disparities in the dental care of children based on socioeconomic status has led to poorer oral health outcomes for disadvantaged children. This results, for many of these children, in a lifetime of dental pain and the need for costly dental procedures which they may not have access to even as adults.

An undesirable cycle of poor systemic health and subpar attendance and performance in the workplace may result from medical issues linked to poor oral health. Hall et al.[3] studied a population in the United States with disparities and Medicaid benefits. This population found it difficult to perform their duties at their place of employment due to dental issues at a rate five-times greater than what was found in the general population.

Among those individuals who are most likely to have substandard dental health are immigrants, those lacking insurance coverage, minorities and those living in rural areas where access to dental care is not adequate.[14] A study by Guarnizo-Herreno et al.[16] found that socioeconomic status was the main cause of the difference in dental preventive care between black, Hispanic and white children, along with other factors, including maternal health and neighborhood safety.[17] It has also been found that untreated dental needs, including carious lesions, were higher in communities with a lower socioeconomic status.[18] The impact of untreated dental disease extends far beyond already devastating oral problems. Children who suffer from dental pain do not perform up to their natural abilities in their academic endeavors.[19] A study by Seirawan, Faust and Mulligan[10] showed that disadvantaged youths are four-times more likely to receive low grades in school. This is probably due to their inability to concentrate and the many lost hours of school attendance caused by their dental pain.

A study by S.L Jackson et al.[20] shows that 17% of children’s absences from school are due to pain and/or infection. Among these children there was a correlation with poor school performances not seen in youths who were absent merely to receive routine preventive dental care. The authors[20] say this suggests that dental disease adversely affects a child’s performance at school

tists and/or dental residents with the supervision of experienced licensed dentists. Because the data demonstrate that children living in lower socioeconomic communities experience a disproportionate amount of untreated dental needs, it is imperative that these clinics are most prevalent in the affected neighborhoods in order to provide quality dental care to children without regard for the family’s financial ability to pay for these dental services.

Dentistry and medicine must work collaboratively, with both dentists and physicians providing appropriate nutritional counseling that could, potentially, have a tremendous impact on decreasing systemic diseases often associated with extremely poor health outcomes and high financial costs. If children were to avoid high-sugar soft drinks and other such snacks, it would have a major impact on lessening childhood obesity and diabetes.

I feel that the professional interaction between medicine and dentistry should be integrated into medical and dental school educations. This would demonstrate the importance of working in an interdisciplinary manner and, it is hoped, these young physicians and dentists would continue to work in a collaborative manner with each other throughout their careers.

If our nation could decrease the prevalence of obesity, hypertension and diabetes through simple educational and preventive interventions that take into account the structural issues barring access to care, such as social inequality and the divide between dentistry and other forms of healthcare, a course would be set for a healthier and productive life for America’s children. p

Association Activities Santa’s Helpers NYSDA STAFF gave Santa a helping hand in 2021 by “adopting” a needy family of five through the Albany County Department of Social Services Adopt a Family program. Staff purchased items from a gift list provided by Social Services, then wrapped each item for delivery in time for Christmas, in the hopes of spreading cheer during a season upended by the pandemic.

Eighth District Installs New Executive Director THE EIGHTH DISTRICT Dental Society has a new executive director. John D. Craig, Ph.D., assumed the post Nov. 1 following the retirement of Executive Director Chris Kilmecko.

An educational specialist and Western New York native, Dr. Craig has worked at various

educational institutions in the region for over 30 years, most

recently as a project manager at O/N BOCES in adult education. Prior to that he served as a consultant and executive director for the Niagara Frontier Industry Education Council.

Dr. Craig is a Navy veteran with an A.A.S. degree from Niagara County Community College, a B.S. in Commerce and M.S. in Business Education from Niagara University and Ph.D. in Education Administration from the University at Buffalo. He has spent the majority of his career creating educational services and programs of impact that support educators, students, families and institutions, as well as community agencies, business and industry.

I said this column is about looking forward, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention, with the utmost gratitude and more than a little emotion, our beloved secretary, the late, great Mark Feldman. His passing in November was a tremendous loss to all, and his voice of reason and common sense will be greatly missed during our Board table discussions. I am heartened that in our last conversations, he continued to express enthusiasm for the progress we have made as a Foundation and the strategies we, with staff, have set forth going forward. To that end, we owe it to Mark to continue on our course of excellence and growth.

In the upcoming year, I will share with you stories of people and organizations with whom we have worked and whose efforts to increase oral health awareness and education we have helped.

Because we are small in terms of resources and staff, we are limited in what we can do, but that doesn’t mean we are sitting still. We continue to broaden our cadre of like-minded advocates among those in public policy, community health and elected officials. Destination Dental School A Remote Pipeline Program to Increase Student Diversity Thikriat Al-Jewair, D.D.S., M.S., FRCD(C); Jessica Scates, M.Ed.

ABSTRACT Promoting diversity among dental school applicants and enrollees is key to tackling oral health disparities and improving learning outcomes. Building the pipeline has proven to be an effective method to increase diversity and heighten interest in dentistry among students. Destination Dental School is an eight-week remote pipeline program aimed at increasing diversity of historically underrepresented minority (HURM) students in the field of dental medicine. Pre- and postprogram surveys showed that the program was effective in fostering HURM students’ interest in dentistry and increasing their knowledge and preparedness for dental school applications.

According to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), only 18.2% of applicants to dental schools for entry in 2020 were historically underrepresented minority (HURM).[1] Although this percentage has increased over the past decade, the change is modest, and the lack of diversity in the dental workforce remains a problem in the dental profession, and it is well below the proportions reported for minority groups (Black/African-American, Hispanic, American Indian and Alaskan native, Pacific Islander and Hawaiian) in the U.S. Census.

An abundance of research exists that highlights the importance of diversity in health professions, including dentistry. Promoting diversity among dental school applicants and enrollees is important for tackling oral health disparities, which are partly triggered by a lack of HURM dental providers who understand HURM communities’ needs. A previous study[2] of practice locations that involved senior dental students showed that a higher percentage (68.7%) of Black/African-American students planned to practice in inner-city locations near underserved populations compared to white students (20%). Another study[3] reported that Black/ African-American dentists provide care to a patient pool that is disproportionately black (44.9%).

Building the enrollment pipeline has proven to be an effective method to increase diversity and heighten interest in dentistry among students.[4,5]Although the percent increase in enrollment of HURM students has been marginal, this increase was reported to be greater in schools that offer pipeline programs as compared to those that do not. Several pipeline programs have resulted in an increase in diversity among dental school applicants and enrollees.[6,7] Despite the success of these programs, challenges still exist. In a recent qualitative study, Burns et al.[6] examined perceived barriers to dental school application among underrepresented pipeline program alumni. They found a lack of knowledge about the process and financial barriers, such as application fees and dental admission test (DAT) and interview costs, to be the major barriers.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a paradigm shift towards distance learning in dental education using syn-

chronous and asynchronous online platforms. Similarly, in-person pipeline programs in dentistry[8] and other disciplines, such as radiology,[9] surgery,[10] cancer research[11] and STEM,[12-14] moved to partial or fully remote programming. A surgical training pipeline program that did not move to a virtual setting resulted in fewer applications than in previous years.[10] Remote pipeline programming offers some benefits to students and organizers. Programs that shifted to remote learning saw an increase in the number and availability of faculty and industry mentors, as well as the number and demographic and geographic diversity of students who were able to participate.[11,12,15] The online environment was appropriate for certain activities, for example, mentorship meetings,[12] training in research[11] and dialogue-based activities[14] like case-based discussions.[15] Students joining remotely can access easy-to-use learning resources and feedback tools, such as Kahoot (Oslo, Norway), a game-based learning platform, and Padlet (San Francisco, CA), an online bulletin board.[13] And, finally, remote pipeline programs expand opportunities for universities or students with limited resources.[10,11] A recent study[7] compared virtual and in-person instruction for the semester-long Saturday Academy, a New York University College of Dental Medicine dental pipeline program, and found the

virtual program to be as effective and impactful as the in-person one.

Remote pipeline programming also presents a number of challenges. Virtual environments can reduce a sense of community;[10] as such, program coordinators must find creative ways to engage with students online.[13] Resources, including technology and internet access, may not be equitably distributed or available[11,13] Additionally, disjointed collaboration and communication can contribute to unclear expectations for students[11,13] Finally, virtual environments limit opportunities for students to engage in different types of research projects,[10] as well as complete hands-on-activities,[10,11,14] a component that is especially important for dental education.

Students were recruited to this program through indirect and direct recruitment methods. The program description and application were published on the UBSDM website. The University at Buffalo published an article announcing the launch of the DDS program in its online newspaper UB Now, a daily publication for UB faculty and staff with a mailing list of over 7,000; and an article was published in the American Dental Association News.

Direct recruitment included email campaigns to colleagues, peers and organizations. To apply to the program, interested individuals completed and submitted an online application form, personal statement, resume, academic transcript and two letters of recommendation. The program’s admissions committee reviewed and scored application packages. Eligibility criteria included a level of education (undergraduate or post-baccalaureate) and identification as a HURM for the field of dentistry.

Program Description The remote DDS program was held weekly, in three-hour sessions every Saturday throughout June and July 2021. All sessions utilized online platforms for teaching and learning: Zoom for weekly meetings and Miro (San Francisco, CA), an interactive, online whiteboard, for asynchronous activities, weekly feedback and resource sharing. Students participated in an orientation meeting to get to know one another, ask questions before the start of the program and complete the pre-course survey.

Twelve faculty, alumni and staff supported the 2021 DDS program. Faculty and alumni led case presentations about the different disciplines in dentistry, including anesthesiology, endodontics, general practice. orthodontics, pediatrics, periodontics, prosthodontics, public health and radiology, and also outlined their career paths and experiences in dental school. Students received supplies through the mail from the UBSDM so they could participate in faculty-led, virtual hands-on-activities, an important and popular portion of the program. cluded carving tooth anatomy, and completing direct restorative fillings on 3-D printed models and alginate impressions of teeth.

University at Buffalo Admissions staff presented an information session on the admissions process and financial aid. Additionally, 21 dental students supported the 2021 DDS program by leading DAT guidance sessions, conducting 1:1 mock interviews and participating in panel discussions. Finally, students honed their research skills by developing and presenting a team-based capstone research project using the PICO model (P: Patient/Problem; I: Intervention; C: Comparison; O: Outcome).

For program monitoring and evaluation, students submitted weekly, anonymous feedback using “I Like” and “I Want” prompts on Miro (San Francisco, CA). Program leadership reviewed the feedback after each week and made necessary adjustments to the program’s content and design. This continuous feedback loop ensured the program’s relevance and appropriateness.

Students also completed pre- and post-program surveys to measure their perceived knowledge of dental medicine, the application process for dental school and the DAT; perceived preparedness for and likelihood of applying to dental school; and perceived interview and research skills. A survey instrument was developed specifically for this program. The survey tools were hosted on Google Forms (Mountain View, CA). The instrument included 10 questions: three focused on demographics; four Likertscale questions measuring perceived knowledge, preparedness and likelihood of applying to dental school; and three qualitative, open-ended questions focused on expectations for the program, as well as barriers and resources to apply to and attend dental school. The post-course survey instrument also included two questions focused on perceived ability to perform specific tasks and four questions related to program satisfaction.

DDS Program Outcomes Assessment UBSDM received 51 applications and accepted and enrolled 24 students. The program’s cohort included students aged 19 to 30 from 15 states across the United States. Nineteen (86%) students were female; 5 (14%) were male. Race/ethnicity for program students was 16 (72%) African-American/black; 5 (22.7%) Hispanic/Latino/ Latinx; 2 (9%) mixed race/ethnicity; and 1 (4.5%) Native American. All students (100%) completed the program.

Response rates to the pre- and post-surveys were 100% and 92%, respectively. Comparison of pre- and post-survey data revealed an overall improvement in all measures. Participants’ knowledge in “the field of den-

tal medicine” increased from 37.5% (pre) to 90.9% (post). Similarly, “disciplines in dental medicine” 16.6% to 90.9%; “research in dental medicine” 0% to 86.36%; “day-to-day life as a dentist” 58.3% to 90.1%; “dental school application process” 37.5% to 86.4%; DAT 37.5% to 90.9%; and “strategies to improve dental school applications” 12.5% to 90.9% (Figure 1).

Data also revealed increases in preparedness to “apply to dental school” 45.8% to 68.2%; likelihood to apply “to dental school” 91.7% to 95.5%; and “to UB School of Dental Medicine” 91.7% to 95.5% (Figure 2).

Figure 3 depicts changes in knowledge specific to skill sets. Students’ “interview skills” improved from 16.7% to 95.5%, and research skills improved from 25% to 86.4%. The majority (86.36%) of students noted change in their ability to give an evidence-based presentation, work effectively in a team, and develop hand skills; and 90.48% noted change in their ability to network/communicate.

It is important to note the various barriers and resources that may impact DDS students’ ability to apply to and attend dental school. Table 1 shows responses from students when asked about barriers and resources to apply to and attend dental school. They identify finances, GPA and the DAT as the top three barriers to their applying to and attending dental school in both pre- and post-course surveys. Students also noted the need for a strong mentor/peer network, funding opportunities, additional DAT study resources, and information about the admissions process to successfully attend and complete dental school.

In response to program satisfaction students said: “It exceeded my expectations. I was not expecting to be able to do hands-on activities considering the virtual nature of the program.

I really appreciated every resource given to us.”

The DDS leadership team will utilize pre- and post-course survey results to inform the curriculum for future pipeline programs. To evaluate the outcomes of the DDS program and its impact on the field of dental medicine at large, the UBSDM will request all DDS students to complete an annual outcome/impact survey. This tool will measure objective data, including DAT results, application, admission and acceptance to dental schools, and graduation from dental school.

Program tuition was fully covered by the UBSDM. Students who completed the DDS program received a waived application fee to the UBSDM and reimbursement for the DAT up to two years after program completion. In addition, eligible students received a stipend or Kaplan DAT study resources. The program received institutional funding and in-kind donations from UBSDM alumni and the industry, including the Phil Galeota family, Aspen Dental, Evolution Dental, Henry Schein Foundation, Ivoclar Vivadent and Kaplan.

Limitations and Future Recommendations The National Institutes of Health[16] has identified populations underrepresented in the scientific workforce to include underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, women, individuals with disabilities, individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, and individuals from low socioeconomic status backgrounds. The inaugural DDS program inclusion criteria was narrow, with a focus on inclusion of applicants from HURM groups. For future DDS programs, the DDS application will include a broader inclusion criterion to ensure the program has a greater impact on diversity of the scientific workforce.

In response to what improvements can be made to the program, students cited a desire for more time to interact with one another, more intense study sessions for the DAT, more handson activities, more supply materials, and additional preparation for the dental school application process. Future programming will shift and change according to student, faculty and leadership input and in consideration of restrictions related to COVID-19.

Conclusion In conclusion, the DDS program was effective in fostering HURM students’ interest in dentistry, as well as increasing their knowledge and preparedness for dental school applications. Alteration in Facial Contour Associated with Aging Case Report Bohan Lin, D.D.S.; Louis Mandel, D.D.S.

ABSTRACT The authors examined a 73-year-old female because of a chief complaint of bilateral swellings of the parotid gland. After detailed questioning, the authors determined that the perceived facial swelling was caused by the inferior displacement of separate and identifiable facial fat compartments. Aging, coupled with gravity, results in both a compartmental and intracompartmental inferior displacement of facial fat.

Long-lasting fillers injected intra- or extra-compartmentally also contribute to this inferior migration.

When observed in a dental setting, extraoral swellings in the maxillary mandibular area are usually associated with dental infection. Nevertheless, the dental practitioner must consider other causes, such as aging, for the facial distortion. Aging results in facial fat displacement. The injection of a durable cosmetic filler may enhance this effect such that the resulting facial alteration mimics an extraoral dental swelling.

Facial aging results primarily from a redistribution of the superficial facial fat which is located in individual and identifiable fat compartments.[1,2] Because each fat chamber has its own be-

havior pattern during the aging[3,4] process, a full understanding of their anatomic location is required prior to their recontouring with a filler. The identification of these compartments, separated from each other by septae, has been made possible by using contrast-enhanced computer tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging, combined with anatomical dissections.[2] Five individual and distinct superficial facial fat compartments, separate from each other by septae[5-7] can be identified below a line drawn from the inferior orbital rim to the tragus of the ear.[2] • The nasolabial compartment is a thin, longitudinally oriented fat mass along the lateral side of the nose that extends to the angle of the mouth.

• The medial cheek compartment, triangular in shape, has a base that spreads posteriorly from the level of the infraorbital rim and an apex that extends inferiorly to the zygoma.

• The middle cheek fat compartment (Figure 1), just posterior to the medial cheek compartment, has a rectangular shape, and is positioned superiorly in the malar/zygomatic arch zone and extends down to a line level with the maxillary dentition.

The superficial lateral cheek compartment, also rectangular in shape, stretches superiorly from the zygomatic arch to the inferior border of the mandibular body, and is located between the superficial middle fat compartment and the tragus of the ear.

• The jowl compartment is located inferior to the medial cheek compartment, lateral to the nasolabial fat, and extends down to the level of the inferior border of the mandibular body.[2] Gierloff et al.[4] reported that an inferior migration of some facial fat compartments occurs during aging and that the ptosis is due to gravity. This process is facilitated by an age attenuation of the limiting septae of some but not all fat compartments. Although the middle cheek fat compartment (Figure 1) will change position and move inferiorly, other compartments will remain fixed in position because of their more effective ligamentous attachment to the underlying bone.[2] Simultaneously, an inferior volume shift within some individual fat chambers was also observed.[4] Significant inferior volume displacement of fat contained within the middle cheek fat compartment was observed when the effects of gravity were simulated.[2] Aging again plays a role because it allows gravity increased time to exert its effect. This fat migration is different in that it represents a volume movement of middle cheek fat within its own compartment. This intracompartmental fat migration is independent of the in toto migration of the middle cheek compartment that is associated with weakening of the enclosing septa. Two autonomous movements of fat are in play: inferior movement of the entire middle cheek fat compartment and an inferior movement of intracompartmental fat within the individual compartment. These two inferior but separate fat displacements result in a loss of facial fullness in the malar/zygomatic arch area, and a concomitant increase in buccal soft-tissue bulk at the level of the maxillary dentition.

Restoration of normal malar/zygomatic arch area facial contouring is frequently requested by the aging population. Facial rejuvenation, via the injection of a cosmetic filler, has become a commonly used procedure to solve this aesthetic facial defect.

Currently, Juvéderm Voluma XC (Allergan Inc) is approved by the FDA for cheek augmentation to correct age-related volume loss in the midface. This product is a volumizing hyaluronic acid filler whose use has become very popular because it possesses a high safety profile and has a durability that has been variously reported to range from 18 months to 3 years.[8-10] Case Report A 73-year-old female presented herself to the College of Dental Medicine Salivary Gland Center because she thought she had developed bilateral swellings of the parotid salivary gland (PG) (Figure 2). Although the swellings were asymptomatic, they had become a cosmetic issue that caused some patient distress.

A medical history indicated she had been previously treated for Graves’ disease and a kidney stone. Her current medications include levothyroxine for her thyroid condition and atorvastatin for an elevated cholesterol level.

A cursory visual examination revealed that the swellings of concern were not caused by the PGs. The swellings were symmetrically located, albeit the left side swellings were slightly larger than the right. Anatomically, the swellings were located anterior and inferior to the bulk of the PG, and occupied the lower regions of the facial buccal soft-tissue area. The patient said the painless swellings had developed slowly over the past two years.

No surface erythema was evident. External palpation indicated that the swellings were painless and normal in tone. No cervical lymphadenopathy was present. Trismus was not present, and no oral pathology was noted. A normal quality and quantity of saliva were observed exiting intraorally from the PG duct orifices when the respective PG was aggressively palpated extraorally.

During the examination, the patient volunteered the information that for the past 20 years, she had received annual facial injections of cosmetic fillers. She indicated that the fillers were introduced bilaterally into the cheek area because of “hollows that had developed.” She also said that for the past four years, Juvéderm Voluma has been the filler that was introduced into her malar areas because of the perceived volume loss.

An MRI was requested. The coronal (Figure 3) and axial images (Figure 4) clearly revealed that the bilateral swellings were caused by an increased amount of fat and also by the presence of filler material. The imaged bilateral tissue bulk was situated anterior to the PG, with the accumulated mass being most pronounced at the level of the maxillary dentition.

Once the patient was informed that therapy for her asymptomatic swellings involved surgical intervention or liposuction, she opted for the conservative no-treatment approach.

Discussion Several factors have contributed to the change in our aging patient’s facial contour. As indicated, two processes are actively engaged in the aging of the face, with the middle cheek fat compartment being very involved. Primarily with aging, there is a weakening of the septal border around the middle cheek fat compartment. Gravity then serves to produce ptosis of this compartment, which then becomes manifest as an inferior accumulation of soft-tissue bulk in the lower area of the buccal soft tissues.

This progression in the alteration of facial contour is further accentuated by a second cause. With age, there is a movement of fat within the middle cheek fat compartment. A loss of fat develops superiorly within the middle cheek compartment as time and gravity exert their effect, and the fat migrates inferiorly to occupy space in the lower portion of the middle cheek fat chamber.

Added to these two normal physiological progressions of fat seen in aging is the iatrogenic role of the cosmetic filler. Our patient was very concerned about her facial appearance. As the agerelated change in malar area facial contour became evident, she sought rejuvenation with a filler. Her practitioner chose to use Juvéderm Voluma XC because of its safety record and durability.

Bilateral volume facial recontouring with this agent was performed annually on four occasions to solve the malar defect caused by the inferior fat migration that had developed with age.

In turn, the filler contributed to the abnormal inferior buccal facial contour. The filler had been bilaterally introduced into the superior portion of the middle cheek compartment in the malar/ zygomatic arch area. Because of the filler’s slow resorption, it had the opportunity to partake in the described compartmental and intracompartmental tissue movements. Previously, other more resolvable filler had been used, and their more rapid resorption had obliterated their presence on the MRI. The displaced slowly resorbing filler now added to the patient’s complaint of an abnormal facial contour.

Substantiation for the cause of the bilateral facial swellings can be derived from imaging. The MRI clearly demonstrated that the swellings were caused not only by the increased presence of displaced fat, but also by filler that had as yet not been resorbed because of its relatively recent introduction.

Conclusion Facial fat is dispersed in various individual compartments. These fat compartments react differently to the effects of age and gravity. The physiologic in toto migration of the middle cheek compartment, as well as its intracompartmental fat, can cause a significant change in the inferior proportions of the facial buc-

cal soft tissues. Durable fillers, introduced into the facial malar/ zygomatic arch area, will take part in this migration and add to the inferior facial distortion. The dental clinician should become aware of the unique location of distinct facial fat compartments susceptible to age-related migration. Pandemic Doesn’t Slow us Down Steven Feigelson, D.D.S. Busy, busy, busy. Suffolk County Dental Society has hosted many events in past months, both virtual and live/in-person.

Here’s a summary.

October 21: New Dentist zoom event; Oct. 27: “Welcome to the Jungle,” a live CPR course; Nov. 2: New Dentist zoom event; and Nov. 2: “Social Media in Healthcare.”

On Nov. 3, we hosted a 7 CE live lecture with Dr. Howard Glazer; on Nov. 7, we sponsored a live/in-person New Dentist event at Riverhead Ciderhouse, with Dr. Rekha Reddy and Dr. Nora Odingo; and on Nov. 10, we held a live/in-person General Membership Meeting, with Dr. Ken Kurtz lecturing on implants.

On Nov. 12, we went live and in-person for our 12th annual LI Women’s Dental Conference (“Scrubs and Stilettos”). On Nov. 17, we hosted a New Dentist panel live/in-person at the Hilton Garden Inn in Stony Brook. On Dec. 1, we were live/inperson for our 7 CE course with Dr. Adamo Notarantonio; and on Dec. 7, we hosted a dinner with ASDA members and Stony Brook faculty at Faradays in Smithtown.

Monroe County Hosts Scholarship Luncheon The Monroe County Dental Society hosted an in-person luncheon for 10 University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine students on Dec. 20. Hosted by Scholarship Committee Chair Terry Giangreco and a committee of eight local dentists, the luncheon provided students with an opportunity to interact with Monroe County members to learn more about practicing in the region and the benefits of organized dentistry.

Students were required to apply in advance. All of those attending received a financial award to help offset the costs of their dental education.

Counties Meet In-Person

The Second District Dental Society is excited and proud to welcome Dr. Michael Donato Jr. as its president for 2022. Dr. Donato is a graduate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he earned both his D.M.D. degree and specialty certificate in orthodontics. He has offices in Staten Island, Brooklyn and Metuchen, NJ. Dr. Donato is a diplomat in the American Board of Orthodontics, a fellow in the American and International colleges of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Dr. Donato has been an active member of the SDDS. Most recently, he served as a delegate to the NYSDA House. He was a member of the NYSDA Council on Dental

Practice and New Dentist Committee. He is a past co-chair for the NYSDA Children’s Dental Health Month Committee and held the post of Oral Cancer Consortium/Dental Society Liaison. He is a past president of the Richmond County Dental Society and a past borough coordinator for National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Dr. Donato has served on the SDDS Board of Trustees for many years. He is proud to have volunteered at the GNYDM every year since enrolling in dental school.

But all these accolades pale beside his family. Dr. Donato and his wife, Elaine, have three adult children: Nicolle, Michael III and Matthew. He is beyond words proud of their successes and was recently delighted when Nicolle, who received her D.M.D. from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, joined his practice.

The SDDS also welcomes its other new officers: President-elect Raymond Flagiello; Vice President Tricia Quartey-Sagaille; Secretary Paul Teplitsky; Treasurer Valerie Venterina; and Librarian/Curator Phyllis Merlino.

Though Omicron forced the postponement of our annual Installation of Officers and Awards Luncheon, we are looking forward to celebrating together on April 3 at the University Club of New York. We are eager to once again show the dental community how Brooklyn and Staten Island honor their own.

Richmond County Installs Sandra Scibetta COVID also caused postponement of the Annual Dinner Dance and Installation of Officers hosted by our branch society, Richmond County. That has not decreased enthusiasm for welcoming Dr. Sandra S. Scibetta as 2022 president.

Dr. Scibetta received both her D.D.S. degree and certificate in prosthodontics from NYU College of Dentistry and a D.D.S. from the Ministero della Salute in Rome, Italy.

Society Welcomes New President Laurence Schimmel, D.D.S. We are very excited to welcome Dr. Don Safferstein as the new president of the society. Dr. Safferstein is a home-grown talent, growing up in the Bronx and attending the prestigious Bronx High School of Science. After graduating from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, where he met his wife, Vicki, Dr. Safferstein returned to the Bronx to serve his community at multiple offices. In 2004, he agreed to serve as the BCDS representative on the NYSDA Chemical Dependency Committee. The role developed into something he is quite passionate about. Don is currently representing NYSDA in a national institute on a drug abuse study attempting to reduce opioid overdoses.

Don has also become quite serious about dentists using their skills to give back to society. He represents the Bronx on the Board of Donated Dental Services. And he has become involved with a dental clinic in rural Haiti.

In his new role as president, Dr. Safferstein maintains a singular focus on providing help and information to the members of BCDS as we all adapt to the COVID-19

pandemic. We are extremely proud to have Dr. Safferstein as our president, as I’m sure his wife, Vicki, and three daughters—Dayna, Julie and Rachel—are as well.

Job Fair The Bronx County Dental Society will be hosting a job fair for dental students, dentists seeking associates and dentists transitioning to retirement. It will be held on Friday, April 8, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Van Courtland Golf Course. Several DSOs and businesses essential to practice transitions will be in attendance. Hope Springs Eternal Olga Lombo-Sguerra, D.D.S. As we continue to adapt to the new normal of our daily lives, let us not forget to look back over the past 20+ months and realize how far we have come. The way has been both challenging and enlightening for, al-

though the world is full of suffering, it is also full of people overcoming adversity.

Our commitment to organized dentistry, to our colleagues and staff, and to our patients has provided the path toward that light at the end of this long tunnel.

A special thanks to our Executive Committee who, with the Board of Governors, committee chairs and past presidents, have been meeting regularly (both in-person and virtually) to keep the business of our association moving ahead, as they continue to guide us—keeping us all safer and better informed.

The Joy of Getting Together Both our September and November General meetings were held in-person and were wellattended. The joy of coming together, seeing, talking and laughing together was palpable and had been sorely missed. And, although there was still enough hesitancy with in-person events that we continued to offer our fall CE programs via Zoom, the glimmer of hope was realized and the purpose of our mission reinforced as we came together once again.

Virus Causes Delay in Installations The Erie County Dental Society Installation Brunch, scheduled for Jan. 16 at the Mansion on Delaware, has been moved to Sunday, March 13, at the same venue. The society’s leadership felt the current infection rate of the COVID-19 variant was too high to risk exposing attendees. We look forward to seeing everyone in March.

The Eighth District’s annual President’s Reception was also rescheduled due to the rise in COVID-19 infections in Erie County. Originally set to take place Saturday, January 29, the reception will now be held on Saturday, March 26, at the same location, 500 Pearl, in downtown Buffalo.

With the current rise in Omicron-variant cases, we expect that our spring courses will continue to be offered primarily via Zoom. We’re considering trying some inperson CE later in the spring, as we have learned that warm weather, which allows for opened windows, provides a bit more of a comfort factor for indoor events. If conditions warrant, we can move courses to webinars quickly.

We are also pleased to announce that our March 16 General Meeting will be held once again at Villa Borghese in Wappingers Falls—a venue that has quickly became a member-favorite. Dr. Frank Celenza will present “Seeking Interdisciplinary Excellence.” Dr. Celenza is uniquely dual-certified in the specialties of both orthodontics and periodontics.

The Eighth District Dental Society held its annual Children’s Christmas Party on Dec. 4 at the Brookfield Country Club in Clarence. The party was held in-person for the first time since 2019. Because of the pandemic, the 2020 party was scaled down and held at the district office. Its return in 2021 was a huge success, with breakfast being served, a magician on site to amaze the children and their parents, and Santa Claus—who flew in to give all the children gift bags.

is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon who completed his dental training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Edwards went on to receive his specialty training at the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Program at NYU/ Bellevue Hospital Center. Dr. Edwards has been in private practice in Midtown Manhattan for over 20 years.

Before he became president of NYCDS in 2015, Dr. Edwards served as presidentelect, vice president and treasurer of the society, and he sat on numerous committees.

He is immediate past chair of the NYCDS Membership Committee and NYSDA Council on Membership & Communications. He served on the Greater New York Dental Meeting’s Organization Committee from 2017-2020.

New Dentists Meet Up Before the Holidays An energized crowd of new dentists came together at Torch & Crown Brewing Company in SoHo on an unseasonably warm evening in late November. Turnout was great, and it was wonderful to see so many dentists new to the NYCDS community mixing and mingling with more familiar ones. The society’s incoming president for 2022, Dr. Ioanna Mentzelopoulou, attended the event and had this to say: “We were so lucky to gather in person after so many months isolated. We were able to celebrate all the fresh faces of dentistry today. I feel grateful to meet all these

young dentists, who represent the profession. Dentistry’s future is definitely bright.”

The New Dentist Committee looks forward to holding more events at unique venues in the year ahead.

In-Person Greater New York Dental Meeting a Success The 2021 Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) was the largest dental convention in the United States to be held entirely face-to-face. The GNYDM hosted over 23,539 healthcare professionals at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. It featured over 800 exhibits of the newest technology for the dental profession. Attendees could choose from among 175-plus educational programs, including full-day and half-day seminars, essays, hands-on workshops and scientific poster sessions.

The Road to Recovery Webinar Series Sponsored

by Henry Schein In the aftermath of the pandemic and the impact it has had on dentistry, NYCDS and Henry Schein have teamed-up to offer an important eight-part webinar series to help members move forward and flourish again.

The ACD Mentoring Lecture Program, created and developed by Dr. Guy Minoli, continues its series of webinars on diverse topics for residents and new dentists. The ACD Mentoring Lecture Program has gained local recognition with New York metropolitan-area hospitals, helping dental residents satisfy their ADA CODA requirements for ethics and practice management.

Time to Get to Work on Expanding Diversity The New York State Dental Association took a major step toward establishing equity and inclusion within the organization and, indeed, the profession when last year it sanctioned the formation of a Diversity and Inclusion Task Force. It is hoped that the existence of this body will raise awareness of deficiencies within the leadership of the Association and that task force members will develop appropriate measures to correct them.

It is further hoped that the Association rank and file will be motivated to take action within their own practices to establish a more inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.

The chair of the NYSDA Diversity and Inclusion Task Force is Ivan Vazquez of Suffolk County.
