r. Martin Luther King Jr. often quoted the 19th century poet and diplomat James Russell Lowell whose noted work, The Present Crisis, included the following, “Once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide. In the strife of truth and falsehood, for the good or evil side . . .”

For many Americans like me, this year’s midterm was indicative of just such a moment in this nation’s history. Encouragingly, based on the unprecedented level of participation, millions of my fellow Americans felt the same.

Young and old, male and female, gay and straight, Americans of all ethnicities and religious persuasions were invested in a collective quest for change. Democrats, Independents and even some Republicans who strayed from loyalty to their party and voted for what they believed is “right” against the “right” leaning, nationalist inclinations of the nation’s Republican leadership.

To say this year’s election was a fight for the soul of America was an understatement for many of us. So, when reports showed the remarkable increase in voter registration nationwide, I was hopeful. More recently as reports of an increase in early voting—both by mail and in person—began to blow through historical norms, I was buoyed and even more encouraged.

Across the country young people registered and voted in numbers that raised expectations of the most hopeful among us. Minority voters of all colors appeared to step-up and voted in numbers beyond traditional expectations.

This election many Americans took a stand against vitriol and hatred, against separation and discrimination, against homophobia, xenophobia and nationalism. They voted for the future of this country, for their futures and the futures of their progeny—they voted for the best in a nation still striving to become that “more perfect union.”

Across the country, whether faced with voter suppression, long lines, bad weather or all the above, voters came out in unprecedented numbers determined to make a difference. They were resolute and, in many instances, waited willingly, patiently and enthusiastically to cast their ballots, to exercise the sacred ritual for which so many through the centuries fought, bled and died to secure—a privilege we make worthy of their sacrifice by voting.

Successful maneuvering by Republicans when they took control in many states in 2010, and then gerrymandered house districts in the wake of that year’s census, helped secure Republican control of the U. S. House of Representatives for most of this decade—that changed on Tuesday.

However, the election also bought disappointment. Despite heroic campaigns by Democratic Senate candidates, Republicans maintained control of the Senate. The Democrats’ overwhelming turnout this election was met with equal turnout by Republicans. As a result, efforts to shift the paradigm in several gubernatorial races and some senate races fell short of expectations.

Since taking office, President Trump has fed Americans a constant diet of dangerous and unmitigated lies.

Americans, fed-up with the lies, race baiting and misogyny, fought hard to change course.

As polls closed across the country Tuesday evening and results rolled slowly in, it became clear the president’s penchant for lying would be marginally tempered as a result of Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives. Under Democratic leadership, the House can truly begin an earnest investigation into what happened in the 2016 election and everything associated with it.

Also, in a repudiation of the president’s demonstrated misogyny, it was also a victorious night for women, as more than 100 were elected across the country.

In addition, Democrats gained control of several state houses. This bodes well for potentially correcting some of the gerrymandering that occurred in 2010, when the new census is taken in 2020 and districts are redrawn.

However, the election also proved an unnerving reality. Trump is not influencing the hearts and minds of those who support his nationalist agenda—instead, Trump actually reflects the attitudes and beliefs of those who put him in power and helped him sustain much of it on Tuesday. Many of the candidates the president campaigned for with words dripping in hatred and white supremacy, won. As a result, it is easy to predict the racism and intolerance he professed on the campaign trail will continue and possibly escalate.

The election was just the beginning. The journey to a more perfect union in the age of Trump will continue to be a long and arduous trek, fraught with challenges for most and tinged with dangers for far too many. Yet, I must choose to look at the election results as a glass half-full.

Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.

Inland Empire Home Ownership on the Rise

Riverside - The U.S. Census Bureau’s (Bureau) third quarter report released late last week held good news for the inland region.

According to the Bureau, 64.7 percent of households in the Inland Empire owned their own homes. The results reflected an eight-year high in-home ownership continuing the trend of positive recovery from the Great Recession. The results placed the inland area 34th among the nation’s 75 largest cities considered in the evaluation. In contrast, with a homeownership rate of 47.4 percent, Orange County and Los Angeles ranked worst among the nation’s 75 largest cities reflecting a decline from a high of 48.8 percent homeownership attained in the third quarter 2017.

San Manuel Band of Indians Donates $40,000 San Bernardino

Crafton Hills and San Bernardino Valley Colleges to Offer Tuition Free Program

T

he San Manuel Band of Mission Indians made a generous donation to the Friends of the San Bernardino Public Library (SBPL) last month.

The SBPL said the funds will be used to purchase library books for the four city libraries of the San Bernardino Public Library system.

According to Library Director Edward Erjavek, “The donations go a long way to promote education and early literacy to San Bernardino youth and their families. This longstanding partnership with San Manuel is a noteworthy example of community organizations coming together to help San Bernardino thrive.”

With the donation, the library plans to purchase an estimated 2,000 books for readers of all ages in various genres and subjects, including some in Spanish. Books purchased with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians donation can be identified by the name of the tribe stamped on the blank page when you open a book as well

as in the library’s public access catalog where it will read, “Purchased by San Manuel Band of Mission Indians” along with the first letter of the respective library’s name receiving that copy.

This is not the first time the San Manuel Band of Indians has made generous donations to SBPL. In 2015, the group donated $40,000 for library books and in 2017, they donated another $45,000. continued on page 18

San Bernardino – College officials with the San Bernardino Community College District are working to mobilize their existing financial aid programs and funding sources to benefit local high school students. Their goal is to provide future graduates opportunities to participate in tuition free career training certificates or start the first half of their bachelor’s degree program at no cost.

According to Board President Joseph Williams, SBCCD plans to make a $10 million investment in this effort to benefit at least 1,000 of the area’s high school students. The long-term goal is to boost the number of college graduates in the inland area of Southern California.

American Professional Basketball Teams Face Off in Fontana Fontana

T

he Jessie Turner Health and Fitness Community Center in Fontana hosted an exciting basketball event on Saturday, October 27.

The Aqua Caliente Ontario Clippers and the Salt Lake City Stars basketball teams faced off in a fiery competition that thrilled spectators in attendance.

Included among those who enjoyed the game were President Ellen Turner and Vice-President Vernal Townsend of the Concerned Citizens for Development of North Fontana, as well as Executive Pageant Director Deborah Hall Lindsey and committee member Toni Hall of the Miss Black Awareness Pageant. Miss Black Awareness Pageant contestants Jhayla and Monica were also in attendance.

Although the Agua Caliente Clippers usually play at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, they brought the pre-season game to the Jessie Turner Center to the delight of approximately 300 basketball fans who attended.

Ellen Turner said the special event brought a welcomed “new energy” to the community. Her enthusiasm was further enhanced when after the game, Utah’s 7-foot center, Willie Reed, posed with her for a photo. continued on page 18

Type 2 Diabetes: Getting Tested and Diagnosed - Part 2 of 3 GUEST COLUMNISTS: Taylor ArburthaClayton and Oyindamola Oyinlola

W

e know what can put a person at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes from last week’s article: “Type 2 Diabetes: Are You at Risk?”, but how do we screen for it, and what tests are involved? Out of the 214 Inland Empire residents in our needs assessment survey, 91% could not successfully identify what tests are involved for diabetic screening. If you have not been screened for Type 2 diabetes, the following tests may be performed: • Random glucose test This test measures your blood sugar at any time. A blood sugar level of 200mg/dL or higher indicates having diabetes.

• Glucose tolerance test This test measures your blood sugar after (1) eating normal meals for 3 days, (2) fasting for at least 8 hours, and (3) drinking a liquid that contains 75 grams of glucose (that will be provided). At two hours a blood sugar (glucose) level of 140mg/dL or lower is normal, 140-

199mg/dL indicates prediabetes, and a level of 200mg/dL or higher indicates diabetes.

• Hemoglobin A1C blood test This test measures your average blood sugar level over the previous 2-3 months. An A1C below 5.7% is normal, 5.7%-6.4% indicates prediabetes, and 6.5% and over indicates diabetes.

If you have already undergone testing/ screening for Type 2 diabetes, and if your tests are over a year old, they may be repeated. After the screening process, your physician should compare your current results with your previous results, and look for trends or changes in blood sugar levels. Early detection of Type 2 diabetes is essential in reducing the risk of serious complications, and increasing the chance of reversing the disease, if caught in its early stages.

Breaking Ground at the Sterling Natural Resource Center Highland

H

undreds of local officials and community members joined the East Valley Water District (EVWD) in late October to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Sterling Natural Resource Center (SNRC) in Highland.

The state-of-the-art recycled water treatment facility and community center located on the corner of N. Del Rosa and 6th Street in Highland is expected to be completed in less than three years. When SNRC is operational, it will create a sustainable source of water for 800,000 area residents by recharging the local groundwater basin.

“The Sterling Natural Resource Center is much more than a wastewater treatment facility, it’s an investment in the future of Highland,” said EVWD General Manager/CEO John Mura. “Beyond bolstering our region’s water independence, the SNRC will be working with local schools to offer hands-on educational opportunities and provide a pathway for students to learn about water and wastewater treatment operations as a potential career option.”

In addition to the official breaking of the ground with ceremonial shovels, the event also included several family-friendly activities such as a photobooth, arts and crafts, an educational water recycling lab demonstrating SNRC’s technology, backyard games, food trucks and live music. Event sponsors included Sunbelt Rentals, Quinn Cat, Burrtec, and the East Valley Water District Employee Events Association.

The East Valley Water District (EVWD) and Sterling Natural Resource Center is capable of treating up to 8 million gallons a day, with the ability to expand to 10 million gallons a day, the SNRC recharges the local Bunker Hill Groundwater Basin and creates new opportunities for the surrounding community in the form of education and training, community space, neighborhood improvements, and new habitat for the Santa Ana Sucker fish. Serious Implications for Global Warming

San Bernardino – In a report published by Nature magazine last week, researchers raised concerns the earth may be more sensitive to fossil fuel emissions than experts realized. The study showed the world’s oceans absorbed 60 percent more heat per year than previously realized.

According to National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), oceans absorb about 90 percent of the excess heat trapped in the world’s atmosphere and experts now believe over the last 25 years the oceans have absorbed significantly more heat than the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimated in its landmark study published in 2014.

These findings could have serious global implications. According to experts, the world could experience an acceleration in the melting of sea ice, sea levels can rise faster than forecasted; it may change the ocean currents, produce more powerful storms, and lead to the destruction of additional coral reefs.

In another recent and stunning assessment this time reported by the World Wild Fund for Nature, more than 50 percent of the world’s creatures across land, rivers and the seas were destroyed over the last 40 years.

According to Professor Ken Norris, Director of Science of the Zoological Society of London who assisted in the research, “This damage is not inevitable but a consequence of the way we choose to live.”

United Nations Report Details Possible Climate Crisis as Early as 2040

O

n Sunday, October 7th, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), released its fifth assessment report that described the distressing effects of the rise of temperatures by two degrees Celsius since the pre-Industrial era. The report warns that the Earth would reach a point of crisis as early as 2040.

The report projected a severe decline in food, coral reefs, and an increase of wildfires. It is stated that there is startling evidence the irreversible tipping points in major ecosystems and the climate system may have already been reached or passed. These impacts can be witnessed in our diverse ecosystems like the Amazon rainforest or Arctic tundra.

According to the United Nations Sustainable Development website, these are the major findings from the report: • From 1880 to 2012, average global temperature increased by 0.85°C (or 33.53°F).

• Oceans have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished and sea level has risen.

• Given current concentrations and on-going emissions of greenhouse gases, it is likely that by the end of this century, the increase in global temperature will exceed 1.5°C (34.7°F) compared to 1850 to 1900 (in all but one scenario).

This IPCC Report is the first to be commissioned by world leaders under the Paris Agreement, a landmark pact made in 2015 by 195 nations

committed to lowering green-houses gases to suppress and ameliorate the disastrous effects of climate change. In 2017, President Trump withdrew the United States from this agreement.

The United Nations has been at the forefront of climate change advocacy and action since it’s 1992 Earth Summit. The Earth Summit resulted in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which maintains the goal of preventing “dangerous human interference with the climate system.”

There is some hope though. A “Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion: 2018” report was released Monday, November 5. The report informed of new findings of an ongoing healing of the ozone layer due to a decrease in ozone-depleting substances. Since 2000, the ozone has healed between one and three percent. The Northern Hemisphere and mid-latitude zone is expected to heal completely by 2030s, the Southern Hemisphere in the 2050s, and the polar regions by 2060.

Under the Montreal Protocol, these strides were made possible.

Thirty years ago, the Protocol was established as it was found that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other substances were obliterating the ozone-layer.

Next year, it is projected that climate change efforts will continue to prove fruitful with the ratification of the Kigali Amendment. The amendment continued on page 18

Riverside Studios—The Entertainment Mecca of Inland Empire Region M. Matime Contributor

ust a couple of years ago the full feature film, My Name is Myeisha, swept the nation and was also received with high acclaim across Europe, winning several awards along the way.

The film, produced by University of California Riverside (UCR) Professor Rickerby Hinds, was based on his play, Dreamscape. Both the play and the movie were based on the 1998 shooting death of 19-year-old Tyisha Miller by Riverside police officers.

The movie’s overwhelming success fueled a vision Hinds held to expand creative access to filmmakers, writers, editors, actors, and actresses in the Inland Empire.

On Monday October 22, that vision, Riverside Studios, was formally launched with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Riverside County Film Commission.

In partnership with the County of Riverside Economic Development Agency, Professor Hinds, Chair of the Department of Theater, Film, and Digital Production at UCR, will oversee the facility with the assistance of Andrew Hardin, UCR graduate student in the MFA program for Screenwriting and Playwriting.

Not only is Hinds’ work globally recognized, he is heralded as a trailblazer in the inland region, influencing the trajectory of economic growth and expansion in the region.

During Riverside Studios’ special opening event, four horror sets were displayed to showcase the talents of film students from UCR, Riverside Community College (RCC), and San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC).

The teams were comprised of R’Shorts (UCR), another team from UCR lead by Erendira Alvarez, a team representing RCC’s Film and Television (FTV), and SBVC’s team was led by Faye Hines.

RCC’s FTV team won the event’s horror sets’ competition with a gory, butcher-themed, blood-and-guts set which included “human like” hors d’oeuvres on toothpicks resembling chicken. The award, a check in the amount of $2,500, was presented to the winners at the studio on Friday, November 2.

The LA Circus Prop House, familiar to many film makers in Riverside County, generously provided decor for the event valued at $4500.00.

Hollywood celebrity Ceasar Sebastain, best known for his role in “This is Us,” was also part of the guest list which included GambitOne Studios, Riverside County Supervisor Chuck Washington, the Honorable Cheryl Brown, Dr. Hardy Brown, Sr., Hinds’ wife, Dr. Paulette Brown-Hinds, and a host of family and friends and associates.

Speaking about the vision and promise of Riverside Studios, Hinds shared how he wants to provide more opportunities for residents of the region to participate in the film entertainment industry, noting that despite the area’s proximity to Hollywood, as a region the inland area was not well represented. “Because Los Angeles is practically in our backyard,” he emphasized, “the greatest challenge so far has been getting people and companies outside of the region to take this endeavor seriously.”

Andrew Hardin, who recently acted in one of Hinds’ UCR production titled, Birthmark, was one of Hinds’ former Hip Hop theatre students and a recent graduate of UCR. Hinds considered him a perfect fit to assist with bringing such a large vision to reality.

Hardin, who worked as a car sales manager after graduating, was contacted by Hinds to

work on new projects and productions. This created an opportunity for him to work closely with Hinds on planning and launching Riverside Studios.

“It’s amazing how things work because fortunately for me,” Hardin confided, “the lead actors kept dropping out of Birthmark and Rickerby needed someone who was a professional that he could trust, so he reached out to me. I quit my job as a car sales manager and the rest is history.”

After production of Birthmark concluded, Hardin became a project manager for Voice Media Ventures and one of the projects happened to be the Riverside Studios. “I have been with him [Hinds] every day, assisting in making his vision come true for Riverside Studios,” Hardin stated.

“I have been truly blessed to come into this situation with a lot of support from Riverside County, especially Rob Field and his office with the EDA, and from film commissioners, Bettina Breckenfield and Stephanie Stethem with the Riverside Film Commission,” he added.

Hardin said from his perspective, “The planning process has not been too challenging.

lthough a few races remain undecided, the historic 2018 midterm election is over.

Statewide, 39.0 percent of California voters cast ballots this year. Voters in both Riverside and San Bernardino Counties under-performed relative to the level of voter participation at the state level—only 34.7 percent of eligible voters in San Bernardino County and 28.65 percent of voters in Riverside County cast ballots in this year’s election.

At the national level, although the highly-touted “blue wave” did not materialize to the extent some had hoped, despite the impacts of gerrymandering and what some described as blatant voter suppression, Democrats gained control of the U.S. House of Representatives and several state houses even as they lost seats in the U.S. Senate.

In addition, women, who represent more than half the nation’s electorate, secured a record number of congressional seats although they remain grossly under-represented in congress.

This election also saw several Americans make history. From a congressional perspective New York elected the youngest women, Michigan and Minnesota elected the first Muslim women, Massachusetts elected the first Black woman, New Mexico and Kansas elected the first Native American women, New Mexico elected the first Latina governor, and Colorado elected the first openly gay man to serve as its governor.

Riverside voters also elected Karen Speigel to serve as County Supervisor representing District 2, and as of Wednesday, Russ Bogh appeared to have edged out Jeff Hewitt (50.38% to 49.62%) and is poised to represent District 5. Also, Joel Anderson was elected to fill the 4th District seat on the California State Board of Equalization.

In one of the most highly contested local races in recent years, Deputy Sheriff Chad Bianco unseated longtime Riverside County Sheriff, Coroner and Public Administrator, Stan Sniff.

Although nearly 250,000 votes remained uncounted Wednesday morning, Bianco held a clear and commanding lead with 56 percent of the votes among the ballots already totaled compared to 43 percent for Sniff.

It appears Hinds found the perfect location.

The expansive Riverside Studios facility is centrally located at 5950 Wilderness Avenue, Riverside (former home of the Riverside County Animal Services shelter).

Hinds envisioned Riverside Studios as a foundation for the development of original films using a multi-pronged approach to education, private investment, and government support. “I believe there is huge potential for building not merely a sustainable company, but a thriving one.”

“Our plan will also consist of upgrading the infrastructure of the space, continuing to provide shooting space for small projects, student projects, as well as regional film productions,” Hinds explained. “We will also be working with the Riverside Unified School District as well as other school districts to provide after school film workshops.”

Riverside Studios has a vision for the coming year that includes growing into a strong, tightknit, creative community. “I envision us being busy telling stories, our own and those who need our help—teaching students how to be the best storytellers that they can be.”

Other goals, according to Hardin, include

training students to be professionals in the industry and how to get paid for what they love to do. The studio’s goal includes not only making an impact in the Inland Empire, but also on the film industry.

“In the future, I see Riverside Studios expanding to a bigger space with maybe even satellite locations around the region. I see us being a trusted film studio for local and worldwide productions. I see us being a trusted film training center that produces top notch talent in all things film-related. I see Riverside Studios being one of the many things that make Riverside and the Inland Empire a great place to be. I see us changing the way storytelling is done and transforming who tells those stories,” Hardin proclaimed.

Riverside Studios will also serve as a learning space for film production, script writing, editing, sound production, grip and electric, set design, costume design, and so much more.

Apprenticeships and courses will soon be available to students for course credit through UCR Extension and Riverside Community College.

n Thursday, November 29, the Society of Extraordinary Women (SOEW) will host its inaugural Extraordinary Leaders Awards Gala at the Riverside Art Museum located at 3425 Mission Inn Avenue in downtown Riverside. The event, scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., will be cohosted by Dr. Paulette Brown-Hinds and Mr. Stan Morrison.

The evening’s theme, “Extraordinary LeadersChanging our Communities, Changing Our World,” will recognize community leaders, educators, scientists, and technologists who have made extraordinary impacts in their field. The works of these individuals’ cross cultures—sharing ideas and innovations that impact our communities and the world.

Those who attend will be afforded a remarkable opportunity to connect with extraordinary individuals, explore the museum/technology exhibits, and experience great music and special performances by the Ramona Show Choir while also enjoying delectable appetizers and desserts.

Although there is no charge to attend the event, guests will have an opportunity to donate to SOEW’s great programs such as the Ignite Leadership and STEM Academy for Girls. The Academy provides a comprehensive program in Leadership development and STEM academics including Coding, GIS Mapping, Social and Cyber Etiquette. Since the program launched four years ago, it has served hundreds of girls in the inland region who otherwise would not have an opportunity to attend a program such as this.

The Awards Gala is a culmination of the SOEW’s Quarterly Conversation Series where the organization brought together renowned scientists, technologists, educators, and community leaders to share information about new technology and innovation that impact the community and the world.
