was born into an era of struggle for civil rights; came of age reaping the benefits of the 1984 Voting Rights Act and Affirmative Action; and grew old as those hard-fought gains have eroded.

Although many of my generation remained in the struggle--each in their own way--there are others who simply moved on with their lives, voting every election, but largely disconnected from the work left undone.

I often wonder what happened. How did we, as a people, grow somewhat complacent in our push for Black equality? Did we become too focused on enjoying the fruits of our progress?

Did the heated passion that propelled us during those long years of struggle reduce to a simmer of complacency as some found comfort in working class lives?

When the next generation came of age, did we somehow fail to infuse them with the same sense of urgency needed to carry the movement forward?

Did we fail to pick up where the educational system fell short and provide them with the civic lessons needed to understand how government works at the local, state and federal levels so when they grew old enough to vote, they eagerly embraced the generational responsibility to further the quest for equality?

Did some not understand this is a bifurcated struggle that requires effort not only in the streets when something goes wrong but also at the polls during every election?

I ask these questions because I read so many articles, tune in to so many conversations where individuals are totally disconnected from their responsibility as citizens. It is almost as if an apathy has taken hold, a misguided belief that voting does not matter, that individuals are impotent to effect change.

Today, I am saddened by the continued heartless and brutal killings of young Black men and women at the hands of police, but heartened by the movement and demands for change it rekindled.

Although there is a rallying effort to get everyone to vote this year, as noted above, there are still those who believe their votes do not matter.

Like everything else in life, knowledge is power in this regard and for some who may not understand how government works, it is easy to become disillusioned when the first Black President was structurally limited in his ability to cure all the ills that have suppressed Black progress since 1619. Some complain he should have, could have done more, fought harder, broken the rules to facilitate progress. Unlike the current president however, Barack Obama is an honorable man who operated within the boundaries of the oath he pledged to uphold.

For those who may not understand the limits placed on presidential power and authority, it is easy to understand how they might be disappointed. However, when an individual does not vote out of disappointment or because there is no perfect candidate, he/she gives those who do not care about Black people, who are determined to perpetuate the suppression of Blacks, who exhibit no interest in how many Black Lives are taken by police, in essence gives them two votes and empowering those who care least about Black Lives the power to determine the future—theirs and ours as Black people.

ll registered voters in California will soon receive a mail-in ballot even if they haven’t asked for one, and there will be plenty of options to register, re-register, vote by mail, vote in person or vote curbside up until Nov. 3rd, said Secretary of State Alex Padilla at a briefing with ethnic media.

“We have to start thinking of November 3rd as the last day of voting, not simply as ‘election day’,” Padilla noted.

California has 21 million registered voters, more than the population of every other state except Florida and Texas, and the largest number of voters anywhere.

Voting by mail has been growing in popularity, Padilla said. In the last statewide election – the March primary—up to 70% of registered voters voted by mail.

“That’s a great start, but in California 30% of voters is still a large number. We want to make sure those who are not familiar with this way of voting are comfortable with it and know they can still vote in person if

they need or want to,” said Padilla.

Voters should vote by mail and vote early, Padilla urged, and they should take advantage of tools that improve the transparency and security of voting such as ballot tracking (Where’s My Ballot?) which tells them when their ballot has been sent, when it was received by the county, and when it was counted.

Voters can sign up for ballot tracking and receive notices via text, email or voice call, he added.

“This will be great for transparency, accountability and confidence, which have come under attack in recent weeks,” Padilla noted. He called the timing of the Presidential elections in the midst of the pandemic and heightened political polarization “an unprecedented situation.”

Padilla encouraged voters to register, re-register if they need to change their voter file information or check their registration status by going online at VoterStatus.sos.ca.gov. If any of their information has changed, continued on page 17

US Judge Blocks Postal Service Changes that Slowed Mail Gene Johnson | Associated Press

A

U.S. judge on Thursday blocked controversial Postal Service changes that have slowed mail nationwide, calling them "a politically motivated attack on the efficiency of the Postal Service" before the November election.

Judge Stanley Bastian in Yakima, Washington, said he was issuing a nationwide preliminary injunction sought by 14 states that sued the Trump administration and the U.S. Postal Service.

The states challenged the Postal Service's so-called "leave mail behind" policy, by which trucks have been leaving postal facilities on time whether or not there is more mail to load. They also sought to force the Postal Service to treat election mail as First-Class mail.

"The states have demonstrated the defendants are involved in a politically motivated attack on the efficiency of the Postal Service," Bastian said.

He also said the changes created "a substantial possibility many voters will be disenfranchised."

Bastian said he would issue a written order later in the day, but that it would be substantially the same as that sought by the states.

was suspending some changes — including the removal of iconic blue mailboxes in many cities and the decommissioning of mail processing machines. But others remained in place, and the states — including the battlegrounds of Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada — sued to have those undone as well.

The other states suing include Washington, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia — all led by Democratic attorneys general.

Other lawsuits over the changes have been brought in New York and Pennsylvania.

San Bernardino - Private elementary schools in San Bernardino County meeting the state’s requirements to allow in-person instruction are now able to participate in the county’s successful COVID Compliant Business Partnership program. The program gives participants financial assistance while assuring staff, students, and their parents that the school is following procedures designed to protect their health and safety. To date, 31 private TK6th grade schools in the county have secured waivers allowing them to open for in=person instruction. Applications from other schools are currently in the review process.

Justice Dept.: Sedition Charge May Apply to Protest Violence Michael Balsamo, Alanna Durkin Richer and Colleen Long | Associated Press n a private call with federal prosecutors across the country, Attorney General William Barr's message was clear: Aggressively go after demonstrators who cause violence.

Following up with a memo Thursday obtained

by The Associated Press, Justice officials "reemphasized" that prosecutors should even consider bringing rarely used sedition charges for some unrest cases. The statute could "potentially apply to some of the violent acts that have occurred."

Barr is pushing his U.S. attorneys to bring federal charges whenever they can, keeping a grip on cases even if a defendant could be tried instead in state court, according to officials with knowledge of last week's call who were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity. Federal convictions often result in longer prison sentences.

The Trump administration's crackdown has already led to more than 300 arrests on federal crimes in the protests since the death of George Floyd. An AP analysis of the data shows that while many people are accused of violent crimes such as arson for hurling Molotov cocktails and burning police cars and assault for injuring law enforcement, others are not. That's led to criticism that at least some arrests are a politically motivated effort to stymie demonstrations.

"The speed at which this whole thing was moved from state court to federal court is stunning and unbelievable," said Charles Sunwabe, who represents an Erie, Pennsylvania, man accused of lighting a fire at a coffee shop after a May 30 protest. "It's an attempt to intimidate these demonstrators and to silence them," he said.

Some cases are viewed as trumped up and should not be in federal court, lawyers say, including a teenager accused of civil disorder for claiming online "we are not each other's enemy, only enemy is 12," a reference to law enforcement.

The administration has seized on the demonstrations and an aggressive federal response to showcase what President Donald

Trump says is his law-and-order prowess, claiming he is countering rising crime in cities run by Democrats. Trump has derided protesters and played up the violence around protests, though the majority of them are peaceful.

Deputy Attorney General Jeff Rosen wrote in the Thursday memo that the sedition statute doesn't require proof of a plot to overthrow the government; it instead could be used when a defendant tries to oppose the government's authority by force. An example, cited in the memo: "A group has conspired to take a federal courthouse or other federal property by force," similar to what occurred in Portland, Oregon during clashes there. Those charged under the statute could face up to 20 years in prison, though it's difficult to prove in court.

But Justice had also explored whether it could pursue either criminal or civil rights charges against city officials in Portland, Oregon, after clashes erupted there night after night between law enforcement and demonstrators, spokeswoman Kerri Kupec told The Associated Press.

Pockets of violence have indeed popped up in other cities: Rochester, New York; Minneapolis, Louisville, Washington, D.C., and Chicago.

Federal officials were called into to Kenosha, Wisconsin, after large protests and unrest following the shooting of Jacob Blake and the gunning down of two protesters and later arrest of a 17-year-old in their deaths. Notably, that teenager has not been charged with any federal crimes. Neither was a man accused of shooting and killing a demonstrator in Louisville following the death of Breonna Taylor.

While Barr has gone after protest-related violence targeted at law enforcement, he has argued there is seldom a reason to open sweeping investigations into the practices of police departments. The Justice Department, however, has initiated a number of civil rights investigations into individual cases. Barr has said he does not believe there is systemic racism in police departments, even though Black people are disproportionately more likely to be killed by police, and public attitudes over police reforms have shifted.

Federal involvement in local cases is nothing new. Officials across the country have turned to the Justice Department for decades, particularly for violent crime and gang cases where offenders could face much stiffer federal penalties and continued on page 14

Hero and Congressional Gold Medal Recipient Joseph Beaver Has Passed

A

merica lost a hero on Friday, September 18, 2020 when 97-year-old Palm Springs resident Joseph Beaver died.

Beavers is being remembered and celebrated for his service to the nation, his community and the ongoing struggle for human dignity and civil rights.

It was just six short years ago when Beaver, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946, was presented the Congressional Gold Medal by Congressman Raul Ruiz (D-36th District) during a ceremony at the Tolerance Education Center in Rancho Mirage, CA. “Serving our veterans has been one of the greatest joys I have had in my time in office,” said Ruiz as he presented the Gold Medal to Beaver on February 24, 2014. “Our freedom endures because our veterans fought to protect it. It is my great honor to award this medal to Joseph Beaver and may he and all of our veterans be remembered.” These words take on added meaning with Beaver’s loss.

Beaver, one of the first African Americans to join the Marine Corps, trained with his peers at Montford Point, now known as Camp Johnson, in North Carolina. Their entrance to the Marine Corps was enabled by a Presidential Directive signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 which required Black Americans be given the opportunity to join. Years later, in 2011, another American President, Barack Obama, signed a bill to honor these Marines with the Congressional Gold Medal.

These men represented the largest number of Black Marines to serve in combat during WWII. Their legacy includes taking part in the seizure of Okinawa, with approximately 2,000 seeing action.

“This honor is beyond words, I never thought I would be the recipient of anything like this in front of my Congressman and so many friends and family, said Beaver when presented with the Congressional Gold Medal by Ruiz. “America is truly a great country, although it wasn’t always,” he stated adding, “I have been dedicated to

equality and ask the rest of you to always remember to stand up and fight for what is right.”

A dedication noted by the National Montford Point Marine Museum highlights the sacrifices of these Black men as follows: “The Marines of Montford Point entered through its main gate as mere men of color, who had pride, courage and dedication. During the 1940s these men traveled a road that was not paved. They graduated to become Marines and brought the American people and the U.S. Marine Corps into a new era. Today many of the Marines who traveled through this groundbreaking period of American and Marine Corps history have contributed their life's successes to the pain, sacrifices, and rewards that were earned at Montford Point.”

Beaver continued his service to America throughout his life. He founded the Black Historical and Cultural Society of the Coachella Valley and chairman emeritus of the Coachella

The African Methodist Episcopal Church has always been on the frontline in creating individual, systemic, and political change within our communities. I learned by watching and listening to my grandfather (The Late Rev. Dr. William M. Jacks) that pastors (especially those in the Black church and serving underserved communities) wield much influence in those communities and we must fill our members and community members with as much wisdom and knowledge as we can so they in turn can make the right choices to live better lives.

I thought it necessary to empower us, by giving people the opportunity to hear directly from those

who are running for local office throughout the San Bernardino County Area. With violence running rampant, with homelessness on the rise, with communities of color suffering from institutional and systemic oppression; we must make the right choices based on policies and not just out of allegiance to a political party.

Hosea 4:6 reminds us that, "People are destroyed for lack of knowledge." The days of complaining are over, and we must start walking the sermons we preach from our pulpits. We must make our churches and communities better. Dr. Martin Luther King said once: "The church cannot be silent while mankind faces the threat of Nuclear annihilation," and that the church must "be true to her mission."

What's Next - Through our Social Action Committee, we will continue to engage the community at-large to educate them on the propositions and measures that will be on the November 3 ballot. We will sponsor and co-sponsor online events that empower voters on how to track their ballot, where to vote or turn in their ballots and what to do when things are not right at their polling place. We are also encouraging everyone to take a selfie of themselves when they vote with the hashtag #MYVOTEMYVOICE and post it to the St. Paul AME Church San Bernardino Facebook Page.

The forum was facilitated by St. Paul AME Church Social Action Committee members Lynn Summers, Frank Washington, Rev. Each participant was invited to make a three- to five-minute statement about their candidacy.

Abigail Rosales-Medina, Senate District 23 Rosales-Medina began, “It is important to elect someone to represent the community’s needs.” Her key priorities include working to eliminate

I

know you have heard and read this election is critical for the country and especially for Black Americans.

I grew up in the Jim Crow South under laws that made it legal to be segregated by race, to drink water from Colored only drinking fountains, ride in the back of the bus, and where KKK billboards were displayed on our highways.

A place where Governors like George Wallace of Alabama who left history with this infamous quote, “I say segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.” And, the infamous axe-handle swinging Governor Lester Maddox of Georgia, an arch segregationist who declared, “I want my race preserved.”

My niece told me last week how scared they would be going through a town that displayed a KKK billboard. I took a picture of it in 1972 while on vacation. And in my hometown of Trenton, just one block from where I was born and grew up, our White neighbor would fly the American and Confederate flags at the same time, with the Confederate flag higher than the American flag.

Well those days are gone but Trump and members of his cult, are working hard for them to return.

We cannot allow this to happen and all we have to do is take a little time to vote. Voting is made easy for us today, unlike during my parents’ days when they had to pay a poll tax and guess how many bubbles were in a bar of soap. My mother would joke sometime and say it depends on what brand of soap it was: Ivory or Octagon. Ivory was a soft soap and made lots of bubbles and Octagon was a hard soap with few bubbles.

Having said that I offer you my endorsements for the 2020 Election.

Guide to Voting on Propositions and the City of San Bernardino’s Measure “S” Local Measure San Bernardino Measure S NO on Measure S in San Bernardino: It would raise taxes so the mayor can pay for sexual harassment lawsuits and give tax dollars to employees who work for the city but do not live in the city. Propositions Proposition 14 NO on Prop 14: Taxpayers will be on the hook for $5.5 billion in bonds aimed at reviving the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), a program created in 2004 to boost stem cell research.

Proposition 15 NO on Prop 15: It would leave California’s Prop13 tax rules unchanged, which is a benefit to older Black homeowners. Small businesses will see their rents increase.

This will hurt in the long run and the County Assessor’s offices up and down the state said it is unworkable.

Proposition 16 YES on Prop 16: It would be a giant step to help undo the results of long-standing institutionalized race and gender discrimination that have been key to economic and social inequality. This would put California back in step with Federal Laws governing Equal Opportunity in Employment, access to educational institutions of higher learning and provide fair access to government contracts for women and minority owned businesses.

Proposition 17 YES on Prop 17: It would make it legal for people who have paid their debt to society to vote while on parole for a felony conviction.

Proposition 18 YES on Prop 18: It would make it legal for people who will turn 18 in time for the general election to vote, even while still 17, at the time of that year’s primary.

Proposition 19 NO on Prop 19: Currently, a parent or grandparent can bestow their low tax rate while passing on a rental home or vacation property. This feature would be eliminated under Prop 19.

Proposition 20 NO on Prop 20: This initiative is being bankrolled by the state's prison guards’ union and they are trying to keep the prisons full to protect their jobs. Plus, it will be unjust to Blacks and Hispanic people by adding stiffer penalties for those who violate the terms of their parole three times and require DNA samples be taken from people convicted of misdemeanors.

Proposition 21 NO on Prop 21: Some say it could make a dent in homelessness, a problem that is a crisis in our community. However, rent control does not work as some have learned and a rent board would be in charge of the owner’s property.

Proposition 22 YES on Prop 22: This initiative is about independent thinking people who use their own cars and cell phones to work when they want to, depending on their personal life situation. A yes vote will provide new benefits such as healthcare and a minimum wage. Plus, we have a lot of Black people who love working for themselves.

Proposition 23 NO on Prop 23: This legislation would require at least one physician to be on site at an operating dialysis clinic adding more expense to those who need the service. There are not enough doctors to do this work and the cost would eliminate many clinics in Black and Brown communities.

Proposition 24 NO on Prop 24: This measure would expand and add to California’s twoyear-old law on consumer data privacy and create another layer to an already confusing system.

Proposition 25 NO on Prop 25: This is a risk assessment system that would replace cash bail and is biased because it uses a computer program that is inflexible to human special needs in this special time of need.

Police chiefs in several cities have pointed to the importance of their relationships with federal prosecutors to bring charges that can result in long prison sentences to drive down violent crime.

Even before the unrest earlier this year, the Justice Department was stepping in to bring charges in states where the government believes justice is not being fully pursued by local prosecutors. In January, for example, the department brought federal hate crime charges against a woman accused of slapping three Orthodox Jewish women in one of several apparently anti-Semitic attacks reported throughout New York during Hanukkah.

It is not clear whether protest-related arrests will continue apace. Demonstrations have slowed, though not necessarily because of the federal charges. Wildfires in the West and hurricanes in the South have lessened some of the conflict.

While many local prosecutors have dismissed dozens of low-level protest arrests, some are still coming down hard. A Pennsylvania judge set bail at $1 million for about a dozen people in a protest that followed the death of a knifewielding man by police.

Even some Democrats, including District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser, have called for the Justice Department to pursue federal charges against violent demonstrators, going as far as accusing the administration of declining to prosecute rioters. Washington's Metropolitan Police Department had arrested 42 people one August weekends after a protest left a trail of vandalism. But prosecutors said the arrest paperwork did not identify specific crimes tied to each suspect.

The federal confrontation with Bowser seemed counterintuitive, though Trump has a history of squaring off against the mayor.

About one-third of the federal protestrelated cases are in Portland, for crimes such as assaulting a deputy U.S. marshal with a baseball bat, setting fires and setting off explosives at the federal courthouse and throwing rocks at officers.

for a second civil war or collapse of civilization, were charged with possessing a homemade bomb and inciting a riot in Las Vegas.

An El Paso, Texas, man was accused of promoting hate speech, posting a video online with a racist epithet and making threatening comments to Black Lives Matter protesters while holding a military-style rifle at his feet.

A Minnesota man was accused of helping burn down a police precinct headquarters there after Floyd's death.

But other cases simply do not belong in federal court, lawyers say.

In Seattle, 35-year-old Isaiah Willoughby, who's accused of setting fire to the outside of a police precinct, faces a mandatory minimum of five years in prison if convicted of arson in federal court. He could be looking at about a year behind bars in state court, where his lawyer said the case belongs.

"This is city property that has been destroyed and you have a local prosecutors office that is ready and willing and able to charge these cases in state court, but the federal government is attempting to emphasize these protest-related crimes for whatever agenda they are seeking to pursue," said assistant federal public defender Dennis Carroll.

Carroll accused federal authorities of using the cases to try to make the protests seem more violent and disruptive than they really were.

Federal prosecutors this month agreed to dismiss the charge against a man who authorities said was found with a Molotov cocktail in his backpack after he and other protesters were arrested in May for blocking traffic in Jacksonville, Florida. Video showed that 27-year-old Ivan Zecher was wrongfully arrested because he was actually on the sidewalk — not in the street — meaning prosecutors could not pursue their case, Zecher's attorney, Marcus Barnett said.

"There is absolutely an agenda here to blow these out of proportion, make these look more serious or more sinister than it is," Barnett said of the pursuit of federal charges. "This is the Justice Department, from the top, furthering an agenda that has nothing to do with justice," he said.

Mail-in ballots will go to voters the first week of October (and mid-September for overseas voters).

“According to the law you need to postmark the ballot by Nov. 3, but we are extending the deadline for that ballot to arrive in county offices from three days to 17 days,” Padilla said. “This is just in case there are delays by the postal service.”

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 19, but in 15 counties that participate in conditional voter registration, including San Francisco, people can complete a Voter Registration Application at their local Department of Elections on the day of the election and receive a provisional ballot which will be counted after it has been verified.

“There are several reasons why some people need to vote in person – such as accessibility, or to receive language assistance, or to replace a ballot that was lost, or if you made a mistake,” Padilla noted.

Voting in person will happen in bigger and safer locations than in the past, such as the Golden One Center in Sacramento, an NBA arena, the Dodger Stadium and the Staples Center in L.A., the Chase Center in San Francisco, and the Oakland Coliseum.

Counties are working to identify voting locations where authorities can guarantee that health precautions are followed, including social distancing, mandatory use of masks and availability of sanitizers.

As for the security of mail-in voting which President Trump has repeatedly questioned, Padilla pointed out that ballots are printed on paper that has specific watermarks, are printed by certified printers made in the USA only, use official envelopes with barcodes that can be tracked, and require the voter’s signature on the outside of the envelope.

Referring to President Trump’s recent suggestion that voters in North Carolina vote by mail and then show up in person “to test if the first ballot was counted,” Padilla said that the state has a number of features to prevent any kind of “double voting.” continued on page 17

He also said any kind of “electioneering” or harassment at the polls is “illegal.” He encouraged anyone with questions, comments, or complaints to call the SOS hotline at 1 800 345 VOTE or their local county registrar.

Padilla warned that for close races it will take weeks for counties to finish processing and auditing the results. “If that’s the case, it’s not a time to panic but to be patient and confident,” Padilla said, adding that he is concerned that President Trump will claim victory “prematurely.”

Always the forerunner, a year before the federal government legislated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a National Holiday in 1983, Beaver successfully lobbied the Coachella City Council to honor the Civil Rights icon by recognizing the third Monday in January as a paid holiday.

Remembered by family and friends for his advocacy, passion and commitment, his grandson, Joseph A. Beaver told the Desert Sun, "He was a very good man with a very good heart."

Also commenting on the loss of Beaver, Congressman Raul Ruiz noted, "Today, my heart is heavy as our nation mourns the passing of longtime Palm Springs resident [Joseph Beaver]. May He Rest In Peace and may we continue his legacy of service."

K E E P I N G working so hard over such a long period of time to suppress the Black vote? There was a time when White racists would stop at nothing— beatings, bombings, lynchings, shootings, and any other form of grotesque punishment they wanted to enact just to deny Black people access to the ballot.

Today, moderators point to President Franklin Roosevelt and the New Deal as the trigger that put racists on the determined path to dismantle those programs, the continued suppression of Black votes and the perpetual longing for the “lost cause” or as Trump put it—a return to the time when America was great.

Really? When was that for Blacks?

I disagree with this assessment. I believe it dates all the way back to the 1890 Census and the first glimmering recognition that immigration was changing the shade of America. This was also rooted in the disregard for certain Europeans— Poles, Italians, etc. Many Whites in this country believed at the time, these individuals were inferior to those of French, British and other European heritage considered of more desirable stock. At the time Eastern Europeans were barely ranked above Blacks (and other minorities).

This nation’s desire to control the color and (what they believed to be) the intellectual exceptionalism of the White race in America and elsewhere, would in the coming years, give birth to a concept called eugenics (an effort to control the reproduction within a human population just as is done regarding livestock and plants) to increase the occurrence of inherited characteristics considered desirable and decrease reproduction of those considered undesirable. One of its signature strategies was forced sterilization. California’s forced sterilization law remained on the books until 1979. Just last week we learned the Trump administration has forced sterilization on women being detained in immigration facilities.

After WWII, because of what occurred in Nazi Germany, eugenics morphed into genetics but it was the concept of eugenics, highly touted and advanced in America, that Hitler eventually used to seed his idea of a final solution to the socalled undesirables in Germany. We often forget however, Hitler not only gassed and murdered Jews.

he used on Jews and others during his reign of terror were first perfected by German colonists in Southwest Africa (Namibia). There, not only were Africans dehumanized, they were carted in cattle cars, put in death camps and tribespeople were slaughtered by the tens of thousands in what is now described as “a systematic genocide.”

As noted by writer Edwin Black, “Scholars commonly say the Armenian genocide of 1914–1915, perpetrated by the Turks, was the first genocide of the twentieth century. That is wrong. History records the first deliberate effort to systematically exterminate an entire group was by the Germans in Southwest Africa, 1904– 1908.”

Years later when Hitler rose to power and implemented his final solution, he followed much of the model deployed earlier in Africa. So, it was not surprising Blacks living in Germany were among those he exterminated.

But, unlike the perverted yellow Star of David sewn on the clothing of Jews or the pink triangles used to identify gays who also suffered extermination in Hitler’s Germany, Black Germans needed no special symbol sewn on their clothing—they were easily identified by the color of their skin.

A New York Times headline dated March 30, 1936 read in part, “Hitler Gets Biggest Vote; Many Blacks Counted in. . .” History, of course, has since taught us the vote was rigged.

No one tells the story of Black genocide either by the Germans in Africa or the millions lost in the middle passage or of the Black lives stolen since the first Africans set foot on this continent.

Where is the enumeration of Black deaths due to White supremacy? We know the number—six million Jews, but rarely is there discussion of the 10 to 20 million Africans estimated to have died in the Middle Passage or the hundreds of thousands who died in the march across the African continent or in cells along the coast waiting for ships to carry them to bondage.

There is no accurate count of Blacks who were murdered during the long years of slavery. Or of the tens of thousands of Africans exterminated by the Germans in Namibia. We can’t even get an accurate count of the number of Blacks killed by police across the country today. We know our Black Lives Matter to us, but we are still left continued on page 18

K E E P I N G to wonder whether Black Lives really matter to others. Today we hear the words Black Lives Matter, but judging from history…

If history has taught us nothing else, we know two things. (1) In the modern era, Black Lives are still disposable. (2) In a nation rooted in White Supremacy, that built its economic wealth on the backs of Black people, and continues to enslave them today in prisons across this country, the surest way to protect ourselves and our progeny is through the sacredness of the ballot.

We must protect it; we must educate our children and grandchildren about it; and, we must exercise its franchise. The goal of this piece is not to stoke fear but to evoke passion and further understanding that for us as Black people, voting is about more than politics—it is about life.

being shot, choked, beaten—too often to death— before our eyes just as slave masters made our ancestors watch as their loved ones were beaten, tortured, drawn and quartered, tarred and feathered, and subjected to every other form of degradation imaginable.

Our people are dying disproportionately of every ailment imaginable from AIDS to heart disease to prostate, breast, lung, and other forms of cancer, to diabetes, to kidney disease, etc. And, now, those deaths are accelerated by the unforgivable and inequitable impact of COVID-19.

The rallying cry of my generation was “Give us the ballot.” Today we need a new rallying cry, “Use the ballot.” This, in addition to every other constructive means in our power we can leverage for progress, for life.

The best gift each of us can give ourselves, our

loved ones, our community and our country is to educate ourselves on the candidates, understand the ballot initiatives, and most importantly, cast our ballots. To those who do not think their vote matters, I say even if you believe that, then vote on behalf of those who do; for those who are no longer with us do to COVID-19; for the children; for the slaves who did not survive the Middle Passage; for those who suffered the brutality of slavery; for those locked in prisons across the country; because you believe that Black Lives Matter. Whatever it takes to inspire you to vote.

Be selfless. Others have sacrificed so much and you are being asked to do something that requires so little, but means so much.

We must all vote and vote early if we can!

Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.
