iverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco loves to exploit right wing issues to garner media attention. So it came as no surprise that he would “open mouth and insert foot” at the first opportunity in relation to the highly controversial and political lightening rod issue of abortion in the wake of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to upend 50 years of precedent on this issue. He is so eager for national attention he was even willing to throw another local leader, Riverside City Councilmember Clarissa Cervantes to do so when he brashly claimed on Facebook last week that she supported vandalism at the county courthouse during a Rise Up 4Abortion Rally at the historic site in downtown Riverside last Wednesday. He stated on Facebook, “When you damage, deface, or destroy property you are no longer a protester, you are nothing more than a common criminal. Shame on the Riverside city councilwoman for supporting the defacing of our courthouse. You are lucky we couldn’t

arrest you.” However according to a spokesperson for the Riverside Police Department Ryan Railsback, a police video shows that Cervantes was not even on the scene of the rally until after Riverside police arrived. Local leaders are publicly calling for an apology from Bianco but the media loving borderline political narcissist can’t seem to man up and find his voice. In the true tradition of his dear leader… the former guy…the idea of apologizing must be anathema to him. And to think, this guy was just re-elected to serve another four-year term. A missed opportunity to remove Bianco from office Voter turnout was below average across the state in the June primary, including in both Riverside, San Bernardino counties. This most probably enabled sheriffs in both counties–Chad Bianco in Riverside and San continued on page 14

So much has been placed on Herber’s shoulders, and yet he has managed to developed a steady reputation and evolved into a worthy team leader.

NFL experts believe Chargers are a formidable playoff opponent Last season’s’ 9-8 Charger record is quite deceiving, after losing five games by a mere three points or less. Many NFL experts believe If not for those losses, the Chargers would have been a formidable playoff opponent. Premier quarterback Justin Herbert and a host of quality receivers have an excellent chance to climb the AFC West standings and make this year’s playoffs.

Mike Williams comes off his career best 76 receptions for over 1,000 yards. Standout veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen caught 108 for another 1,000-yard season. COVID-19 Moderna Booster Shots Could Be Available in the Fall

Breanna Reeves | Staff

T

he U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) agreed to purchase 66 million doses of Moderna’s updated COVID-19 vaccine booster to use in the fall, pending approval of the new formula. In June, an expert committee recommended that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) update COVID-19 bivalent vaccines that will target both BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants, which account for nearly all cases. “We must stay vigilant in our fight against COVID-19 and continue to expand Americans’ access to the best vaccines and treatments,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra in a statement. “As we look to the fall and winter, we’re doing just that — ensuring Americans have the tools they need to stay safe and help keep our nation moving forward.” In addition to the 66 million Moderna doses, the U.S. government purchased 105 million bivalent COVID-19 booster doses from Pfizer for use this fall, if authorized by the FDA and recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). from federal health agencies, HHS would receive the first doses of Moderna and Pfizer vaccine boosters in the fall. As of now, individuals who are 12 years and older who are immunocompromised and people 50 years of age and older are eligible for a second booster shot. Available booster shots were manufactured to target initial strains of the coronavirus. Omicron BA.5 is currently the leading variant in the U.S., with the CDC reporting more than 85% of cases as BA.5 and 7% as BA.4. Health agencies have categorized both subvariants as more contagious than initial strains. With the agreement from HHS and the government to purchase bivalent vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer, the U.S. will receive an estimated 171 million vaccine booster doses in the fall, if authorized. The agreements also include options for a total of 600 million doses — 300 million from each company — but only with additional funding from Congress, according to HHS.

Black Job Crisis: For Black Workers’ Wellness at the Workplace as Necessary as Getting a Job

Special Contributor to BVN

I

t may take a decade to address critical issues facing Southern California’s Black workers if the state does not intervene to solve the heightened unemployment, underemployment and unsafe conditions that exist in a workforce plagued by a long history of systemic racism, a new study has revealed. The findings of the study, Essential Stories Report conducted by the UCLA’s Center for the Advancement of Racial Equity (CARE) at Work, documents the challenges faced by nearly 2,000 Black workers in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties during the

COVID-19 pandemic. The harsh realities facing Black workers were revealed to more than 60 grantmaking representatives during a funder briefing event hosted by the Southern California Black Worker Hub for Regional Organizing held in June. Déjà Thomas, the program manager of CARE, told the funders heard there is an urgent need to support workers to ensure an equitable COVID-19 recovery that supports Black workers to secure quality jobs and resources. Andrea Dudley, a single mother of three children – including a son with special needs

– told a panel discussing the report’s findings that the Inland Empire Black Worker Center and their water works program was a Godsend for her during the pandemic. “Support and resources during the pandemic were in such despair, it sent me into a state where I felt I had no one. I couldn’t work part-time because I had to make sure I was there taking care of him,” she said. Brian McNeil, another worker, told the panel that Black worker protections must be supported. “We need funding and support continued on page 12

Bernardino and Riverside counties about programs and resources available for older Californians and the caregivers who look after them. “The state has set aside millions of dollars to help older Californians have a better quality of life through the Master Plan on Aging,” she explained to California Black Media, noting, “Caregiving is the 4th of the 5 goals established in the state’s Master Plan for Aging,” The role of CDA DeMarois listened intently to what older adults said was important to them. CDA administers programs that serve older adults, adults with disabilities, family caregivers, and residents in long-term care facilities throughout the state. It has a $450 million dollar budget and according to its Strategic Plan, CDA’s first objective is to advance Gov. Gavin Newsom’s California’s Master Plan for Aging. resident Joe Biden declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency as cases continue to spread throughout the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra made the announcement during a briefing on August 4, just two weeks after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency. “Ending the monkeypox outbreak is a critical priority for the Biden-Harris Administration. We are taking our response to the next level

by declaring a public health emergency,” said Becerra in a statement. “With today’s declaration we can further strengthen and accelerate our response.” Days before making this declaration, President Biden established a National Monkeypox Response Team and appointed Robert Fenton, of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), as the White House National Monkeypox Response Coordinator and Dr. Demetre Daskalakis as the White House National Monkeypox Response Deputy Coordinator.

Nevins emphasized the significance of Black churches and their unique influence on Black elders in California. "We definitely reach out to the churches. We've always done that," Sharon Nevins. St. Paul Pastor Steven Shepard, volunteered to prepare the delicious meal and addressed the gathering by saying how significant the day was. He reminded everyone how the church must follow the tenants of Jesus and take care of older adults and those who are disabled. That includes feeding them in this “food desert”. As a Chef, it is Shepard’s prayer to have a commercial kitchen to feed them.

their concerns and suggestions specifically related to taking care of elderly Black people in the Inland Empire. A major theme of the discussion was ensuring familiar (traditional) modes and channels of communications were being employed to reach Black elders. Sharon Nevins, director of San Bernardino County's Department of Aging and Adult Services, spoke about ways in which the county has been involved in addressing those concerns. "We have staff out there in the community, putting information in hands," said Nevins.

Creating a better quality of life in San Bernardino DeMarois hailed San Bernardino as a model for the rest of the state because the county has been "meeting the needs of the whole person." According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), California tied with Hawaii in 2019 among the states with the nation's highest life expectancy at an average of about 81 years. Riverside County has a life expectancy of 80.3 years and San Bernardino County has a lower expectancy at 78.8 years. It is a primary goal to create a better quality of life for older adults to live and age well. Part of the statewide plan for addressing the Black elder community is to partner with ethnic media organizations to spread the word about the resources that are available to Californians in the advanced phase of their aging process. DeMarois, much like Nevins, acknowledged that a large portion of the state’s plan to reach Black elders is through local churches. "It's multi-pronged," said DeMarois. "We know in the Black community faith is a proven path." One of the organizations mentioned during the community meeting – an organization that DeMarois claims she took note of – is the Inland Empire Pastor's Association. DeMarois expressed the need for the state and local agencies to implement "coordinated strategies" to approach challenges facing the state's aging population.

Any person, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, can get monkeypox. “We’ll continue to work with the federal government to secure more vaccines, raise awareness about reducing risk and stand with the LGBTQ+ community fighting stigmatization,” Newsom stated. Monkeypox is spread through close or intimate contact, including direct contact with monkeypox rashes or scabs and touching fabrics used by someone with monkeypox. In hosting the event, the Southern California Black Worker Hub for Regional Organizing hoped to educate the philanthropic community about critical issues facing the region’s Black workers and how funders can make a real, sustainable impact on Black communities. position, Bianco has made it abundantly clear he could care less about political decorum. In addition, his list of questionable and inappropriate political posturing was written about ad nauseum in the lead up to the June Primary. Whether he was hiring his daughter, promoting and giving salary increases to his brother, wearing his uniform to give speeches at Republican political events in violation of both state and federal law, refusing to upload statewide COVID-19 restrictions, espousing mis/disinformation regarding COVID-19 and its vaccines, or belonging to a right-wing extremist group that is currently facing charges for sedition against the U.S. government and clearly stating he has no regrets for his association with the group–the red flags were waving that he was not fit to hold the office of a non partisan sheriff–and yet, he was reelected. In retrospect it appears the clarion calls about his disqualifying behaviors may have served to solidify his bonafides among his funders and supporters who showed up and voted for him in June. Bianco has clearly shown Riverside residents who he is and the way he operates so it did not come as a surprise that this camera seeking, darling of the right wing media would exploit the abortion issue in the manner he did. Now that he was proven wrong in his allegations against Cervantes, based on his past behavior, I would be surprised if he apologizes. A true leader would have already issued a formal apology. Showing once again that Bianco is far from being a true leader and even further removed from the kind of individual who should be at the helm of the Sheriff’s Department of Riverside County, overseeing the fourth largest county in the State of California. Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.
