A

2009 study reported by the National Center for Biotechnology Information noted that theoretically, people can become desensitized to violence after repeated exposure.

For example, after repeatedly witnessing community violence, something that would initially elicit strong negative emotional reactions, it is possible those feelings will be dampened and as a result, individuals experience less emotional distress as they continue to witness such incidents again and over again.

I sometimes wonder if this is what is happening to us as a nation, that we are becoming emotionally desensitized to violence.

This weekend the people of Buffalo, NY laid to rest the first of ten Black people shot to death at a supermarket on May 14, by a young white man overflowing with hatred for a whole group of people merely because they were privileged to be born Black in America.

A country whose history is rooted in hate Hate is toxic no matter what the motivation and hate allowed to fester in political, nationalist and facist ideology should be untenable in a country like

America that espouses freedom of religion and that is multi-racial and multicultural and yet, this is what we tolerate.

For a country whose history is rooted in racist theory and white supremacy, the idea of turning away from a white supremacist mindset for many people, is apparently a bridge too far and as such, it continues to be a herculean effort to abate it. This, despite the many white Americans who find such ideology as abhorrent as those of us born Black.

How does roughly a third of the nation’s population continue so successfully to poison the national dialogue by perpetuating a so-called replacement theory; by creating hysteria around ethnic studies by defining it as critical race theory and then misrepresenting critical race theory as something nefarious: and then as if that were not enough, to actually go a step further and ban books as if we are living in some kind of dystopian nighmare where the thought police run roughshod over our lives?

CA Health Officials Issue Joint Statement Supporting COVID-19 Boosters for Kids Ages 5 to 11

n a joint statement on Friday May 20, California Health and Human Services Agency Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly, and Director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and State Public Health Officer Dr. Tomás J. Aragón, issued a joint statement supporting the CDC recommendation authorizing the use of a single booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5 to 11 years at least 5 months after completing their primary series.

The CDC has also strengthened its recommendation that those 12 and older who are immunocompromised and those 50 and older should receive a second booster dose at least four months after their first booster dose.

“COVID-19 vaccines are the best way to prevent hospitalization and serious illness, and data has shown that California's vaccination efforts have saved tens of thousands of lives,” declared Ghaly and Aragón.

that children are also vulnerable, with their case rates and hospitalizations increasing across California. “We support the recommendations of our federal and state partners to authorize and recommend the use of a booster dose for children ages 5 and up. It's important to get kids vaccinated and boosted as soon as possible."

This statement referred to the recommendation by the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunizations Practices (ACIP), and the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) who all concurred in the use of a single booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5-11 at least 5 months after completing their primary series.

San Bernardino County Department Veterans Affairs Ranks Highest in the State Staff

T

he San Bernardino County Department of Veterans Affairs is successfully using a combination of technology and resource availability to assist local veterans.

As a result, a record number of veterans are being serviced in the county resulting in the department ranking highest in the state in fiscal year 2020-21 for securing more than $45 million in new benefits for local veterans.

Veterans service officers are working with veterans through phone and electronic exchanges to secure a variety of benefits such as disability compensation claims, pensions for wartime service, and college tuition/fee waivers from federal, state and local agencies.

“Our staff work hard to represent veterans and help them get all of the benefits to which they are entitled,” said Edward Amaya, Interim Director of San Bernardino County Veterans Affairs. “We are committed to serving our veterans and their families in any way that we can.”

Another example of the Department’s support of local veterans includes participating in hiring events like the West End Hiring and Record Clearing event held Thursday, May 12 at the Anthony Munoz Community Center in Ontario.

“It was a successful event helping businesses and those seeking employment, expungement, childcare, and veteran benefits information,” the department reported. More than 185 job seekers participated in the outreach effort where 42 employers discussed job opportunities with their organizations.

More health conditions may be eligible for benefits A number of veterans continue to suffer from illnesses resulting from their service.

Many of these former service members may now be eligible for health benefits they could not qualify for previously. This is because last November, the VA added bladder cancer, hypothyroidism and Parkinsonism to the list of medical conditions presumptively associated

Report for America Corps Team Expands to Three in Black Voice Newsroom

Report for America extends presence to all 50 states and bolsters newsroom diversity with diverse selection of new corps members S.E. Williams | Executive Editor

R

eport for America recently announced the placements of more than 300 journalists for its 2022-23 reporting corps. The cohort, which includes a number of corps members returning for a second or third year, will join the staffs of more than 200 local news organizations across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and Guam.

The corps is diverse—nearly half are journalists of color and nearly two thirds are women. By better reflecting their communities, Report for America’s partner newsrooms will be better positioned to build trust with those they serve.

Black Voice News is thrilled to announce our current RFA corps member Breanna Reeves, will continue her work with the publication for a second year maintaining her focus on issues related to health equity. This year, Reeves will be joined by two new corps members including photojournalist and digital artist Aryana Michelle Noroozi, and photojournalist Michael Grant, who will focus on criminal/social justice and climate/environmental justice respectively.

“Report for America provides a unique opportunity for journalists to pursue meaningful, local beat reporting that sadly is missing from many of today’s newsrooms,” said Earl Johnson, director of admissions at Report for America.

“Together, our emerging and experienced corps members will produce tens of thousands of articles on critically undercovered topics— schools, government, healthcare, the environment, communities of color, and more.”

Report for America is a national service program that places journalists into local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities. It is an initiative of The GroundTruth Project, a nonprofit journalism organization.

The corps members will begin their new assignments in June. They bring with them past experiences from newsrooms like: ABC News,

Arizona Republic, CBS News, CNN, Idaho Education News, India Currents, Missouri News Service, National Catholic Reporter, New York Times, Outlier, Public Health Watch, Sierra Magazine, Tallahassee Democrat, The Guardian, and Washington Post.

The new corps members include a Pulitzer Prize finalist and recipients of the Catholic Press Award, Ortega y Gasset Journalism Award, Robert F. Kennedy College Journalism Award, College Media Association Pinnacle Award, and several collegiate and state press club awardees. Incoming corps members have also received honors from the Alliance of Women in Media Foundation, the National Association of Hispanic Publishers and Investigative Reporters and Editors, among others.

The group also includes career-changers and reporters with myriad talents, including: a former U.S. Air Force special agent, a theatrical performer, a carpenter with the Vermont Youth

Conservation Corps, a standup comic, a former ecologist, a former chemist, a former wildland firefighter, a Teach for America corps member, and a Peace Corps volunteer who served in Senegal.

Homelessness Increases in San Bernardino County According to 2022 Point in Time Count

F

inding shelter for homeless families and individuals is only part of the picture,” said San Bernardino County Second District Supervisor Janice Rutherford reflecting on the county’s 2022 Point in Time homeless count.

Rutherford, who serves on the County’s Interagency Council on Homelessness continued, “We also must provide wrap-around services such as mental health care, addiction treatment, financial counseling and other aid that helps people rebuild their lives.”

Rutherford’s comments were included as part of a county press release revealing this year’s count saw an uptick in the area’s homeless population to 3,333 homeless persons compared to 3,125 in 2020. There were, however, some encouraging results.

The county’s unsheltered population decreased by one, from 2,390 in 2020 to 2,389 this year, and when considered in relation to counts in the three previous years, 2020, 2019, and 2018, that reflected percent increases in the double-digits and in relation to the increased number of homelessness reflected in this year’s count, to have the unsheltered

population remain basically flat is an indication of progress in this regard.

Who is counted among the homeless?

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) reports a person is considered homeless when they either reside in places not meant for human habitation, such as cars, parks, sidewalks, and abandoned buildings, or an emergency shelter, or some form of transitional housing for homeless persons.

This year’s count found a 28 percent increase in the number of homeless living in shelters and transitional housing versus living on the street compared to 2020. As noted above, this is an indication county officials are finding success in creating additional shelter space for the homeless population.

Funding support from a variety of sources has been pivotal in this regard including programs like Project Roomkey; Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP); HHAP CV funds and Continuum of Care.

Remembering Bobbie Jene Johnson Staff

B

obbie Jene Johnson, a beloved member of the San Bernardino community, has passed.

She was born November 6, 1935, in Emmet, Arkansas to Xavier, Sr. and Allie (Wesley) Jones, the youngest of their five children.

During her time in Arkansas Bobbie became a member of the College Hill Missionary Baptist Church where she accepted Jesus Christ at a very young age. She attended Carver School and Booker T. Washington High School (BTWHS) in Texarkana, AR and graduated in 1954. While at BTWHS, she was majorette in the Lyons Marching Band and enjoyed playing on the girls’ basketball team.

Relocating to California Bobbie came to California in 1955 where she resided until her passing. She attended San Bernardino Valley College and became fond of the archery and tennis classes she chose as part of her physical fitness requirements. In 1976, she earned her Associate Arts degree in Secretarial Science, while raising her 7 children.

Bobbie became a member of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in San Bernardino under the leadership of the late Rev David Campbell. She was a member of various choirs while also being active in various departments and events. She has held the positions of Sunday School Superintendent, Sanctuary Choir Vice President, and was an office holder and member of the church’s Circle Groups.

Making a difference Bobbie worked for the San Bernardino City Unified School District and held many positions there during her career. At the time of her retirement, she served as the principal’s secretary at Dr. Howard D. Ingram Elementary School (formerly Muscott Elementary).

Throughout her years with the school district she was loved, respected, and appreciated by staff, teachers, students, and parents. Bobbie was honored as a recipient of the district’s 2nd Annual Golden Apple Award in 1996.

She enjoyed working with school children and wanted to make a difference in their lives.

Bobbie achieved this through encouragement, emotional support, kind words of advice and by ensuring them that they can achieve great things through hard work and dedication.

Not only does it help local officials make decisions about how to address the issue of homelessness, it is part of the requirements by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to qualify for local funding.

Those who counted About 600 community volunteers were recruited to conduct the 2022 San Bernardino County Point-in-Time homeless count. There were nearly 30 partner agencies that contributed staff time and office space for training and deployment of counters, and there were 24 law enforcement agencies that provided their time, knowledge, and expertise on the locations of homeless persons.

Nearly 30 additional agencies helped with the planning process, including the San Bernardino County Innovation and Technology Department, which created maps to guide counters and programmed the survey so that results could be captured in real time.

Both-sides-ism However, we must also give credit to what I call both-sides-ism. Where many in the national media and otherwise continue to pretend as if there are two fair and equal sides to this story that must be flushed out, assessed and reported . . . there are not. There is only one side to this story that continues to be

“white-washed” generation after generation.

Some like to opine that what we are experiencing today is just a lingering remnant of the Lost Cause.

But, it so much more than that. The the terror these race haters perpetuate is enduring. We know, and I am sure the educated among them know as well, that the trauma they perpetrate against Black people not only impacts Black lives today, that trauma is embedded in our DNA and then passed on to our progeny along with our kinky crowns, the satin blackness of our skin, and the compassion we carry for other humans in our beings as the mothers and fathers of humanity.

grandchildren and future generations just as we inherited it from our ancestors, leaves us– on an unconscious level–dealing with remnants of trauma we don’t fully understand. This is equally as insidious as the physical assaults against us.

Again and again results prove Black Americans still are victims of hate crimes more than any other group. This, while a “government of, by, and for all people” that has existed for about 250 years should by now have the institutional framework and systems in place to deter such atrocities. Yet, again and again, our government has failed to establish them. There appears to be an unwillingness to force the change needed to protect Blacks and other vulnerable groups, for purely political reasons.

A black political bargaining chip Black lives are always up for negotiation, a chip used to barter for political expediency. Even when the courage is mustered to make a change–like the Emancipation (remember the 13th amendment)

bandwidth in our every day lives that we can so quickly move on from what occurred just two weeks ago?

The massacre at the Mother Emanuelle church in Charlston, VA which happened only seven years ago when another young white supremacists took the lives of nine people during the era of Donald Trump, we could not react enough, criticize enough, demand enough, or grieve long enough or loud enough.

So, how has the nation so quickly turned the page in the wake of Buffalo where ten Black lives were stolen? Where are the demands on the Biden administration to offer more than passionate words?

Prayers and promises are not enough. We want you to stop killing us. Stop killing our children, our husbands, our wives our mothers, sisters and brothers, neighbors and friends. We want federal laws with teeth that make the punishment for plotting, planning and/or executing domestic hate crimes so onerous people will be reluctant to commit them.

representatives espousing untruths about critical race theory and fighting against ethnic studies; think about the district attorney and sheriffs–some who even took a knee in 2020, who arrest and charge Black people disproportionately, who join white nationalist groups, or are surprised when they set up tables at their tax payer funded events or who dismissed the gravity of the coronavirus as it raged through this community.

Remember the board supervisors who stood with the sheriff and against the Black community as it fought for transparency, and oversight, who wasted our tax dollars filing lawsuits against the governor for implementing safeguards to protect the community even as our family, friends and neighbors died of COVID-19 solely for political reasons and then wasted more tax dollars in an attempt to recall him for the same political folly. Think about the millions of dollars that could have been used to house the homeless lining the streets of our communities or to feed those who are food insecure and the list goes on.

“We pass hatred and prejudice on to our children as though they were heirlooms of humanity. We cling to traditions that keep us bound to a way of life that no longer works and arguable never has.”

These are all examples of, America giveth and America taketh away. This is the story of Black life in America.

Do not misunderstand. I am not saying that there has been no progress because of course, there has.

The bigger question is why is that a consideration in the first place? Why should we have to be humbly be grateful for something that is our birth right? And, isn’t that birth right supposed to begin with the right to life… the right to liberty… the pursuit of happiness.

I don’t believe the Declaration of Independence meant that the right to life be extended to Black people as evidenced by what we experience here even though that was supposed to be corrected by the 14th amendment.

A nation grown numb The question I ask today is whether this nation is growing accustomed or numb to mass shootings?

Are we so distracted by the other issues taking up

We cannot make people embrace the concept of agape love but we can become a nation that stops enabling hate.

We must make our votes matter As we cast our votes during the primary and then again in November, think twice about who you are electing to represent us. Are they people who support the party that supports Trumpism and the ideology of white supremacy? Republicans of good conscious must choose. If they are enabling and empowering a party that is enabling white supremacy they might as well put on white robes and get a rope. It is time to pick a side, there is no both-sides-ism in this political moment.

Yes, all politics are local and many of these Republicans are our friends, coworkers and neighbors and yet the Republican congressmen elected from this region who may smile and shake our hands and seem nice enough are also the same ones upholding the Big Lie. Lest we forget Think about

As one Black leader once said, “We need to know who is in there [the halls of Congress, state Assembly chambers, city council rooms, sitting at board of supervisor tables or making school board or water board decisions] that are for us and by that I mean not only caring about and representing every one in the community but who also care about our Black lives and the lives of our children.

We must elect people who are committed to moving this nation toward a more perfect union.

Whether we are protecting Black lives or the lives of children in elementary classrooms or those in a gay bar or at an outdoor concert, the only way to begin to end the violence is to elect those who are willing and committed to change, to put an end to white supremacy and a gun culture that has spiraled out of control.

Of course, this is just my opinion. I’m keeping it real.
