ast week I attended a Riverside School of the Arts fundraising event at the Cesar Chavez Center in Riverside. It was an opportunity to see for myself the great work the staff is doing to help our young people expand their creativity, develop stronger self-esteem, learn positive habits, and develop critical intellectual skills and creativity through an arts curriculum. And as a kick-off to Give BIG Riverside County being held today, it was an opportunity to give a donation to help the City of Riverside Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department pay for instructors in Art, Poetry, Creative Writing, Photography, Ballet, Hula, Hip Hop, Jazz, Ballet Folkorico, Rock, Drum, Guitar, Keyboard, and Glee Club.

Starting midnight Thursday, supporters of Riverside County nonprofits can go online, connect with causes they care about like the Riverside School of the Arts, and make a donation. During each hour for 24 hours, one donation made during that hour timeframe has a chance of receiving a “Golden Ticket.” When that randomly selected donation wins the “Golden Ticket,” the charity that the donation was given to will receive an additional $250 in prize money.

In addition, nonprofit organizations can compete for prize money. The first place organization on each leaderboard will receive $5,000, 2nd place $4,000, 3rd place $3,000, 4th place $2,000, and 5th place $1000, 6th place will receive $900, 7th place $800, 8th place $700, 9th place $600 and 10th place will receive $500.

There is an additional incentive to donate specifically to the Riverside School of the Arts since two donors have pledged to match funds raised up to $5,000 each.

Last year’s 24 hour event raised $312,504 for 113 nonprofits. This year organizers have a goal of raising $350,000 for the 170 nonprofits registered to participate. All donations on www.giveBIGriversidecounty.org are made to the Razoo Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that permits donors to advise a re-granting of their donations to qualified charitable organizations. Please note that 95.1% of your donation will be disbursed to nonprofits participating in Give BIG Riverside County.

Youth Basketball Program Bounces into Action Riverside

Y

outh 3 – 14 years of age will be hitting the basketball courts at five Riverside community centers Saturday, January 10 as the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department kicks off the 2015 Youth Basketball season. The program offers youth an opportunity to participate in an organized sports league aimed at developing basic motor skills.

Participants will receive hands-on experience in the game of basketball while learning the value of sportsmanship, developing healthy habits and working together in a team sport. Program benefits include developing physical skills related to the game of basketball and knowledge of rules and plays.

Participant recruitment for the 2015 Youth Basketball season is ongoing and will conclude on December 19. Register at RivReg.org or your local community center.

uthor Karl Marlantes, whose New York Times best-selling memoir, What It Is Like To Go To War, is the subject of the Riverside Reads 2014 campaign, will speak at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium and Soldiers Memorial as part of Cal Humanities’ statewide initiative War Comes Home.

Marlantes, a Vietnam veteran, will participate in an interview-style conversation with Mary Menzel, director of the California Center for the Book. This free event is part of a speaking tour across Southern California Nov. 16-21 and coincides with California Reads, the statewide reading of What It Is Like To Go To War. “Karl Marlantes has written a relevant book, and, as a veteran, I am very pleased that Riversiders are reading it as part of the Riverside Reads program,” Mayor Rusty Bailey said. “I look forward to his presentation, and I want to thank Cal Humanities for bringing this to our city.”

The War Comes Home/California Reads initiative, a public dialog about returning veterans, seeks to engage Californians in the tough questions about what it means to return from war and rejoin one’s community. What are the responsibilities toward those who have been sent to war, and how can we bridge the gap of experience between those who have served and those who have not?

“This is an excellent example of how programs like California Reads and Riverside Reads can focus our attention on important issues of the day,” said Riverside Public Library Director Tonya Kennon. “This is an issue that is facing communities all over the country, and we are very fortunate to have Mr. Marlantes join us for that conversation in Riverside.”

Marlantes served as a Marine Corps Lieutenant in Vietnam and wrote What It Is Like To Go To War nearly 40 years after his own tour of duty. The book recounts his experience of going to war and coming home through the lens of time and memory, illuminated by insights drawn from his study of history, literature, psychology and philosophy.

Marlantes grew up in a small logging town on

the Oregon coast, attended Yale University on a National Merit Scholarship, and went on to study at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He served as a Marine in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals for valor, two Purple Hearts and ten air medals.

Marlantes also is the author of the novel Matterhorn, which won numerous prizes,

including the William E. Colby Award given by the Pritzker Military Library, the Center For Fiction’s Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize, the 2011 Indies’ Choice Award for Adult Debut Book of the Year, the American Historians James Fenimore Cooper Prize for Best Historical American Fiction, and the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation’s James Webb Award for Distinguished Fiction, The American Library Association W. Y. Boyd Literary Novel Award for 2011, and The Vietnam Veterans of America Excellence in the Arts Award for 2012.

n Thanksgiving Day, Corona Community AME Church in collaboration with Hope Recovery Center, and a host of local churches and charitable organizations will be providing hot meals, clothes, and arts and crafts for children, and it’s all free. They expect between 150-200 people to attend and entertainment will be provided. The Family Meal will begin at 9am, and will end at 1PM. inthenews UC Riverside Celebrates Three Megawatts of Solar Power The solar farm is currently the largest in the University of California system Riverside

C Riverside has opened a brand new solar farm that will produce up to 6.6 million megawatt hours of electricity each year. That is the equivalent of powering 960 homes for a year.

The ribbon cutting, at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, will include Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox, local government officials, student leaders, and representatives of SunPower Corporation. It will be held on the solar farm site, which is next to UCR’s Community Garden. Parking will be available in Lot 30.

The project supports the system-wide University Policy on Sustainable Practices, which calls on each campus to contribute to the production of up to 10 megawatts of on-site renewable power by 2014. Wendell Brase, UC Irvine’s vice chancellor for administrative and business services, will attend the ribbon cutting.

He is co-chair of UC President Janet Napolitano’s Global Climate Leadership Council.

UCR’s solar array is currently the largest solar array in the University of California system. Other campuses are also quickly adding more solar technology. For instance, UC Irvine opens a large system next year: UCR signed a 20-year power purchase agreement that allowed the SunPower Corporation to construct, operate and maintain the facility, with the university purchasing the power. UCR spent $350,000 on site clearing and preparation, as well as interconnections costs with the existing substation. The projected savings to the university is $4.3 million over the length of the contract. UCR will also receive carbon and LEED credits that provide additional financial and environmental savings.

The solar farm went online as scheduled on Friday, Sept. 19. It has 7,440 panels across the 11-acre site using GPS tracking to slowly follow the sun across the sky. The massive sea of shiny panels is visible from Highway 60 as thousands of cars pass the campus.

“This is a big step forward, and we plan to

do more,” said John Cook, director of the UCR’s Office of Sustainability. “On a hot and sunny day we will be producing nearly a third of UCR’s total energy needs with this system. But over the course of the year, with variable weather, it will amount to 3 percent of our total energy needs.”

The mission of the Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Branch (NEOPB) is to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity in California residents through education and other strategies.

First time attendee, Kendra NewtonFrancisco, stated that she thought the event was inspirational and a huge success. “From the time I walked in the door, to see so many hair styles and textures were amazing.” When asked about her favorite part of the event she could not just choose one part. “I really enjoyed the Q&A session. I learned a lot. I didn’t realize that so many other African American women shared my concerns and issues about their hair.”

As a new member of the Sister Locs community, she was impressed with the products at the Lovelylocs Natural Hair Care Products booth. “I loved their booth and their products. I enjoyed visiting all the booths. They were very inspirational. Another thing that was great is that both my six and seven year old sons loved the Spinach Cranberry Salad. Dear L.W.: Behind cataract surgery hysterectomy is the second most common surgery worldwide.

One of every three women will eventually need a hysterectomy. The encouraging news is thanks to greater awareness of women’s health issues and encouraging medical advancements, this often controversial procedure is becoming less invasive.

A generation ago, it was typical medical practice for doctors to recommend hysterectomy as a matter of course for patients with problematic periods – no matter how young they were – if they had finished having children.

Today we now understand the importance of leaving the female organs intact when possible, especially the ovaries, which continue to produce hormones even after menopause – something a generation ago we didn’t realize.

While hysterectomy is still surgery, it’s becoming less invasive says University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston’s Dr. Sami Kilic, one of the world foremost experts in robotic gynecological surgery.

Dr, Kilic recommends a groundbreaking new minimally invasive option in which one incision is made in a woman’s navel. The surgery is conducted with a robotic instrument and a camera, and then the excised uterus is gently pulled out through the woman’s vagina. It leaves no visible scar and in some cases the woman is able to return home the same day.

The single-site procedure takes about two hours. A traditional laparoscopic hysterectomy — in which a surgeon would use five small incisions, one for each instrument — takes less time, gives the surgeon more space to operate and allows the surgeon to use an additional instrument, Kilic said. But the procedure often means the patient stays longer in the hospital and experiences more pain, he said.

As with any surgery, patients should get the facts from a reliable and trusted physician or

health provider before proceeding. Be sure you do your due diligence.

inmyopinion What Does An Election Tell Or Mean To Voters

L

ast Tuesday was Election Day across the nation and throughout the state.

We saw some surprises from winners and losers while some voters voted against their own interest and pocketbook.

At the federal level the Democrats lost the Hardy L. Brown senate and now the Republican Party is in control of the legislature while the Democrats are in control of the executive branch.

In the state of California, I saw some interesting things occur: for example the Democrats won the statewide constitutional offices but none of them won the popular vote in San Bernardino County, which now has more registered Democrats than Republicans.

The Democrats lost some seats that they were expected to win or should have won as they were out maneuvered and out gunned by a new, smarter Republican Party leadership.

Locally we saw the voters selecting a more diverse group in representing their interests with quality people, in my opinion, in congress, senate, assembly, city halls, school boards, community college trustees and water boards.

For example: Democrat Pete Aguilar will now represent the people in the 31st Congressional District, which was represented by a Republican.

Norma Torres will join him as a representative of the 35th Congressional District.

Democrat Connie Leyva, will represent the Inland Empire in Sacramento in the 20th Senate

District while Cheryl Brown will represent the 47th Assembly District and Jose Medina the 61st Assembly District along with newly elected Republican Marc Steinorth in the 40th Assembly District.

In Colton the voters rejected my long time friend Frank Gonzales who as been a pillar in that community all of his life, but the newly elected Richard Delarosa for Mayor will provide positive leadership with a new vision.

Fontana returned their leadership to city hall by re-electing Acquanetta Warren as mayor and John Roberts and Michael Tahan to the council.

However the voters elected some new faces, Matt Slowik, Mary Sandoval and Jesse Armendarez to the school board and denied the two incumbents from returning to the board.

In Rialto the voters elected Edgar Montes and Dina Walker to the school board in hopes of providing positive leadership to their district. They returned Joe Baca Jr. to the city council along with Ed Scott.

In the county the voters said no to

Congresswoman Gloria Negrete McLeod by electing Curt Hagman to the 4th District of our County Board of Supervisors. They elected Hardy Brown, II to represent them in Area D and Sherman Garnett Area B to the County School Board of education. Joseph Williams retained his seat on the Community College Board while Corey Jackson was newly elected to the Moreno Valley City Council in Riverside County. And two political newcomers Tonya Burke and David Starr Rabb unseated two incumbent city councilmembers in the city of Perris.

The voters rejected Measure Q in the city of San Bernardino where the Firefighters and Police Officers Associations out spent the Yes group by $10 to one. This is a clear example of the people not voting in their best interest but that is what happens in elections. Now those we have elected to sit on the council will have to decide on what services to cut or contract out fire services. Only four firefighters live in the city while the citizen’s pay them over $17 million a year in salaries and benefits to live in other cities. However the voters have spoken so we must live with it for now.

By Lee Ragin, Executive Editor f you asked June Collison who she is, she’d tell you she was just like any other person. She goes to work everyday, has a family, loves on her grand boys, and enjoys traveling.

But those who know her closely know that Collison once was known as one of the fastest 400-meter runners and held a world record in the 400-meter race. Today, Collison may not be running circles around opponents on the track, but that warrior spirit has helped Collison excel

in healthcare management and finance.

For years, Community Hospital of San Bernardino (CHSB) has fallen short of reaching their budget, consistently losing money; but since 2012, incoming President Collison has successfully worked on the struggling hospital’s profit margin, as well as changed the climate on the campus and the perception of Community Hospital in the community.

The hospital, a Dignity Health member, the fifth largest health system in the nation, is a fullservice, not-for-profit community hospital housing

343 beds. Founded in 1910, the hospital employs more than 1,000 individuals and is an award winning hospital.

featurestory IN HER WORDS I am a grandparent’s baby. I grew up with my grandparents and anyone who has ever lived with their grandparents knows what I mean. It’s a different set up. They were old school. They would check you. I would know what I could do and what I could not do.

We come from a family of academics. I have aunts and uncles who are teachers and professors, who had their master’s degree. I grew up with that so education was very important in our household and I was always told by my aunts and grandparents that no one could take education away from you. It [education] was stressed in our family.

I had two career paths I wanted to do growing up as a child. I wanted to be an ambassador. I loved the glamour of it. I thought it was glamorous.

And the other thing was being a missionary, helping the poor and helping the sick.

When I was in college at Adelphi University I had a very good friend in college at Florida State.

Her major was hospital administration and my major was banking and money management.

And I would always say to her, why are doing that? Work in a hospital? Why would you want to do that? Today, she is a businesswoman.

(Speaking on the difference from going from an athletic background to financial background) I got to tell you this, I’m a CFO by birth. I came up the ranks as a chief financial officer. For years I was a regional financial officer. And going through school, I felt if I had that finance background it would help me as a CFO to look at the big picture.

So that transition wasn’t too difficult at all.

From an athletic background, when you do sports – you’re tenacious, you’re a warrior and I think that has translated into my work. I’m passionate I’m a fighter. Every problem has a solution.

When I ran track, I would walk to the starting line 400-meters and I would look at the other competitors and think someone is getting a whooping tonight. But that’s the warrior spirit that I believe all athletes have to have in order to compete.

I am one of those people that look at the glass half full. I’m not going to say my journey was

peaches the whole time, where people would look at me and think I got that job because I was a track star. Don’t do that I am very skilled. I want people to see me for my competency and skill level. I had to overcome that factor because it was very troubling. I want them to see my expertise and skill level.

Today, I do the treadmill and I do pilates and enjoy every minute of my time.

I think my role at CHSB is more of a visionary and we all work together; what I try to do is talk to the staff and get them to understand the core values of the organization. You must understand the core values and live the core values. I work with a strategic vision where we have to include the staff, physicians and everyone has to come together to understand where we are going. If you are a CEO of an organization and your staff does not know that vision, it’s going to be a long, long day.

It’s our job to make sure our patients come into our organization and they leave feeling and thinking this is the best experience they ever had. I also like to think I’m the cheerleader of the organization. The one that’s out there walking the talk; you’re not just telling the staff these are the expectations but you’re showing them and uplifting them holding them up while your doing it so that you have the same vision and take the same pathway.

It is going to be three years in February since I been here at CHSB. We have had a number of registered challenges. We were always listed by CMS so we had to work with a team to get a good quality person here and having the team understand patient quality and safety go hand in hand, so having the staff understand that was important to me. We do see ever so often the regulatory agencies but that’s when they need to be here and not have to be here.

When I came on we had not met our budget for quite a while. I’m happy to say that as of last year we have met our budget and exceeded it.

I truly believe in the next year we will be doing even better.

THE LEAPFROG REPORT n 1998 a group of large employers came together to discuss how they could work together to use the way they purchased healthcare to have an influence on its quality and affordability. They recognized that there was a dysfunction in the healthcare market place. Employers were spending billions of dollars on healthcare for their employees with no way of assessing its quality or comparing health care providers.

A 1999 report by the Institute of Medicine gave the Leapfrog founders an initial focus – reducing preventable medical mistakes. The report found that up to 98,000 Americans die every year from preventable medical errors made in hospitals alone. In fact, there are more deaths in hospitals each year from preventable medical mistakes than there are from vehicle accidents, breast cancer, and AIDS. The report actually recommended that large employers provide more market reinforcement for the quality and safety of health care. The founders realized that they could take ‘leaps’ forward with their employees, retirees and families by rewarding hospitals that implement significant improvements in quality and safety. Funding to set up Leapfrog came from the Business Roundtable (BRT) and The Leapfrog Group was officially launched in November 2000. Leapfrog is now supported by its members and others.

During Community Hospital’s welcome reception for the new president, June and Steve Barron, Dignity Health senior vice president of Operations for Southern California, and president, St. Bernardine Medical Center, respond to employee questions.

Based on public input and public output hospitals who contribute data for the Leapfrog Report are awarded a score of “A” through “F” and in 2014 CHSB was awarded an “A”. Over the last year CHSB has ranked the top 12 performers for patient satisfaction throughout the Dignity Health system which includes 39 facilities from California, Nevada and Arizona quality patient satisfaction is addressed.

I feel it is necessary for everyone employed to have a dialog with the President so they can see who I am, the expectations and the core values and why its important to live those core values.

Collaboration is one of our core values.

I want CHSB to be their (the community’s) hospital of choice and we are going to be here, population health management, improving patient experience and health in the community.

And I want to partner with clinics out there so we can do this together and improve the health in the community.

My life is an open book. I believe in transparency off the job and on the job but truly I am a proud grandmother of two baby boys. And they both are a year old and I love them to death.

The health field is one of the most beautiful fields to be in. Think about a nurse, you have a job for life. I always tell students set your goals.

This is not a sprint it’s a journey. You are going to have some bumps along the way, but step back, pause, regroup and hit it again, go back to those goals but stay the course. Don’t say today you want to be an RN and tomorrow a physician,

know what you want to be, set your goals, and reach them.

Also, treat everyone you come in contact with, with dignity and respect. That is so important. And when you get up there, when you climb that ladder and get up there, look back and bring someone with you. But most of all, stay the course, its not a sprint, it’s a journey.

In my spare time, I travel. I love to travel. I love Europe. I enjoy the architectural structures in London. Berlin, Turkey, those are the areas I love to go to.

This is what I want them to put on my tombstone: “She was fair.” Because I truly believe I’m a fair person.

I want to continue to foster leadership on campus through mentoring and coaching. One thing I do ask every new employee, you have to mentor the people below you; you have to coach them. In the interview process I ask the question, talk to me a little about your mentoring and coaching.

I am so passionate about my employees and my patients. If my employees are happy they will deliver exceptional care to my patients. I stress do not pre-judge anyone who walks through that door. Treat them as such – as if they were your mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, etc.

Treat them as family.

iesports Poly Clinches League Title The Bears show North little mercy on the way to a 10-0 start and first league title in decades Riverside Poly 49 J.W. North 17

By Gary Montgomery or nearly three decades the Poly football team has headed to its annual battle with cross town rival J.W. North with little hope of returning with anything other than another humiliating loss. This year, the short 20 minute bus ride back across town was likely too short to fully savor what they had just accomplished.

In just two seasons, Poly’s Coach Dennis has completely flipped that script and changed the expectation and aspirations of the entire program.

After Friday’s blowout of its cross town rival the Bears (10-0; 5-0) have not only seized bragging rights for the year but completed an unbeaten regular season, clinched the league title, and secured a much prized first round home playoff game.

Riverside Poly won its last league title way back in 1985. None of the current players were even born at that time. Several players from the 80’s team, now dads and boosters were on the sideline to help celebrate the win.

“This is something we will remember forever. It’s something so special because it’s a team thing. It’s Tim Harding giving us a pregame speech about the teams of the 80’s. I can’t even describe the feeling,” said senior running back Devontre Hale.

Tim Harding is one of those 80’s players and must have felt compelled to provide the team with some additional motivation. His pregame pep talk must have taken a while for the team to digest. North (3-7; 3-2) took the opening kickoff and marched right through the Bears defense to take a quick 7-0 lead and somewhat of a shocking start.

The Huskies’ opening 69-yards drive took just over 3 minutes and was capped off by an 11-yard catch and run from Daonjae Owens to Armstrong Mephors. That jolt of reality must have been enough to awaken the sleeping Bears’ defense. North wouldn’t cross the 50-yard line again in the first half.

Poly’s offense quickly took charge of the affair opening up a barrage of scoring that culminated with a 42-14 halftime lead over the struggling Huskies’ and for all practical purposes ending the contest and starting the countdown to the celebration.

Poly’s Ykili Ross took the second half kickoff, eluded a wave of Huskies defenders and raced 91-yards to make the score 49-17 and dash any hopes of a North comeback.

Poly’s Devontre Hale rushed for 143-yards on 18 carries to lead the Bears and pushed his season rushing total to 1596-yards.

Poly’s defense kept the pressure on, shutting down North’s offense and holding the Huskies’ to a single field goal in the second half.

“This is incredibly sweet. It really feels good,” said senior linebacker Evan Telliard when ask about his stellar play this season. “What motivates me is that fact that these guys have my back on every play and that allows me to do what I do.” And what he does is destroy ball carriers. The League Champion Poly Bears will host the Mountain Pass League’s final qualifier Hemet Tahquitz on Friday at M.L. King. This group of Bears has already accomplished more than any of its predecessors and will likely raise that bar a lot higher for those who follow them.
