hile the United States remains home to more Christians than any other country in the world, a study released this week by the Pew Research Center presents a picture of a changing religious landscape with the number of Christians declining as unaffiliated and other faiths continue to grow. The center’s second U.S. Religious Landscape Study is a follow-up to the first comprehensive study of religion in America. Since the U.S. census does not ask Americans about their religion there are no official government statistics on the religious composition of the U.S. public, researchers explained. With samples taken first in 2007 and then in 2014, the study surveyed more than 35,000 Americans and in that period the percentage of adults who identify as Christian dropped from 78.4 percent in 2007 to 70.6 percent in 2014. According to researchers, during the same period, Americans who identify themselves as religiously unaffiliated jumped from 16.1 percent to 22.8 percent. And Americans who identify with non-Christian faiths also rose from 4.7 percent in 2007 to 5.9 percent in 2014. In addition, the study showed, older people as well as millennials are increasingly disavowing association with organized religion. Much like the rest of the country, the Inland region has witnessed a steady change in the way people identify -- or do not identify -- with organized religion, the type of worship experience they expect, or choosing to promote no religion at all. The recent billboard campaign funded by the Inland Empire Coalition of Reason aimed at increasing the visibility of agnostics and atheists, is one such example. One billboard, located off the 10 and 215 Freeways in Colton asked the question, “Don’t believe in God?”…You are not alone. And then directs interested individuals to the COR website. This week we begin the first in a series of stories on worship and faith in the Inland region with a story on the First Congregational Church of Riverside and its progressive social justice mission, including its current effort to encourage the gay, lesbian, and transgender community to join the assembly. Future issues will feature Allen Chapel AME, one of Riverside’s oldest churches, local Cops and Clergy activities, and millennials’ perspectives on the future of organized religion. We look forward to sharing these stories with you. Paulette Brown-Hinds, PhD

The Invention of Wings Book Review by Laura L. Klure Special to the Voice News he Invention of Wings is a very thoughtprovoking novel about life in the American South before the Civil War. Award-winning writer Sue Monk Kidd did extensive research to make the book accurate, and the fictional aspects she added make its emotional impact very strong. The gripping story encourages the reader to continue, even though it feels terrible to read the descriptions of how slaves were treated. It’s a book especially about the lives of women in the U.S. in the early 1800s. The narrative follows a White daughter in a slave-owning family, and the Black girl who is assigned to her. Chapters alternate between the thoughts of the two girls, continuing well into their adulthoods. Although not as horrible as the devastating punishments inflicted on the Black girl, the White girl is restricted and punished, given only limited freedoms, few choices. Most of the story takes place in Charleston, South Carolina. The descriptions of Black and White family life, of their labors, of the city, the churches, the antiquated behaviours of the people – these images all come alive for the reader. Even those who have carefully studied many historical accounts about this era will probably find it interesting. An example of one of the book’s narratives
T
is when the White girl, Sarah Grimke’, is admonished and punished by her father for teaching the slave girl, Hetty Handful, how to read: “How do you suppose she acquired this ability,” he asked calmly. “Did it descend upon her one day out of the blue? Was she born with it? Did she teach her own ingenious self to read? Of course, we know how the girl came to read – you taught her. You defied your mother, your father, the laws of your state, even your rector,
who expressly admonished you about it.” Slaves who could read were considered to be a threat. However, White women were also often very limited in what they were encouraged or allowed to read, to study, or to do as an occupation. These restrictive practices may have been somewhat less in the Northern States, but even after the Civil War, the abolition of slavery obviously did not create complete equality. We’re still working on some of these issues in the 21st Century. The story is partly based on the lives of two real White sisters, who eventually became crusaders for the abolition of slavery and the rights of women. The writer gives information about the historical connections at the back of the book, but readers will best appreciate the story if they wait to read those notes after finishing the book. The parallels the writer draws between slavery and the oppression of women are striking. The accounts of how people and churches originally opposed abolition may draw some pointed comparisons with how various aspects of human rights are being treated in the U.S. today. Published in 2014, this book was chosen by Oprah Winfrey for her book club. It is now available in hardback, paperback, or kindle versions. It can be found online, and in local bookstores and libraries.

H
arriette Coggs Stuckey, a longtime resident of Riverside was recently recognized as a “stellar” leader by the line dance community. Eleven years ago, she founded Heart and Soul Line Dance and laid the foundation for the formation of several other line dance companies. Stuckey fondly reminisces that most line dancers in the area started their “passion for line dancing” in her classes. More than 100 line dancers from the Bay Area, Inland Empire, San Diego, and the Greater Los Angeles Area packed the auditorium at the Liberal Arts Banquet Hall in Los Angeles to recognize their own iconic leaders of today and tomorrow’s generation of leaders at the H.U.G.s Awards and Dance Benefit. healthyliving with Dr. Ernest Levister F.A.C.P., F.A.C.P.M.
Obesity and Child Abuse Dear Dr. Levister: I was abused as a child. With psychotherapy and maturity I am now able to move on with life. The downside is I’ve spent years drowning in comfort food. At 260 pounds, it’s difficult to look at myself in the mirror. What can I do besides having major surgery to break the eating cycle? W.O. Dear W.O.: First, let me commend you on your courage to speak out. Many women who are abused as children, ignore, abandon and take their pain and dysfunction to their grave. The biggest step forward is recognizing that you’ve come through it all, that you’re a survivor. You say you’ve benefited from therapy and maturity. It’s now time to focus on what matters in the present and the way you choose to use it. Remember, you’ve been able to overcome unimaginable horrors you had no control over. Now you do have control even over those comfort foods. Contact your doctor or a nutritionist for weight loss and weight control advice. You may qualify for one of the many discounted safe minimally
invasive weight loss programs. Consider joining Weight Watchers, ranked #1 for Best Plan for Weight Loss according to new diet ranking from U.S. News & World Report. Create a boot camp with family and friends by getting healthy together. Start walking. Check out the local mall. Most allow fitness activities before stores open. First you may only make it two blocks or one lap around a track. Stick with it. This is a great time to air out the lungs, stretch the muscles and get the heart racing. Keep a journal and reinforce members of your group. Soon you’ll not only look better but you’ll feel more energized. You are what you eat. Revamp your diet. Add fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats and fish to the mix. Cut back on the carbs and slowly eliminate sugar. You’ll probably feel tired as you detox from sugar. You can still have your cake and eat it too by introducing sugar free or low sugar desserts to your diet. If you can afford it, hire a personal trainer to get your workout routine off to a good start. Now that you’ve committed to letting go of the pain, you’ve got to move forward with the strength you’ve been given to live your best life.

When is Enough Enough?
I
t only took a few weeks after ten San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies were caught on a KNBC news helicopter camera beating Francis Pusok in the desert for the San Bernardino Board of Supervisors to approve a $650,000 settlement in his favor. And during the time the board was approving the settlement, the officers involved were on paid leave without any disciplinary action being taken and the Hardy L. Brown public remained unaware of who the officers were until this week because of the Peace Officers Bill of Rights. We have witnessed how the public has reacted in the cases of Ferguson, Staten Island, Cleveland, Baltimore, Los Angeles and other cities throughout the nation with officers being placed on paid leave, not knowing the officers name, and the officers not being questioned by management. Now there are many parts of the Peace Officers Bill of Rights that should be afforded to the people they interrogate while in their custody. If they treated suspects the way it is outlined in the Bill of Rights under section 3303 it would immediately reduce the number of officer abuse complaints. Now I am from the private business community and if an employee is alleged to have violated a policy so severe as to warrant suspension or termination, then it is done so without pay. That employee then has a right through the grievance process to fight for any loss of pay
VOICEINBOX
or reinstatement. This administrative leave with pay is nothing more than a paid vacation or a way for the pressure from the community to cool off and then return the officers back to work with nothing happening to them. Now the sheriff’s deputies in San Bernardino County did not expect to be on camera but in today’s society people and companies are filming everything, everywhere. And for the record, the officers names are: Nicholas Downey, Scott Hamilton, David Moore, Dominic Moody, William Doemner, James Evans, Michael Phelps, Raymond Perez, Tyler McGee and Charles Foster. Now we have every local law enforcement agency and some state governments enacting body camera requirements. Some are suggesting officers wear the camera only if the officer can write up their reports using the video footage from the camera. In other words, make the report reflect the recording of what happened. San Bernardino Sheriff John McMahon has ordered an investigation but has not taken any action against the officers at this time, while the taxpayers who are paying the bills wait patiently by to see how their elected sheriff is going to discipline the officers. When will the public say ‘Enough is Enough’ and demand accountability and action.

Senior Minister Jane Quandt leads prayer
Faith In The Inland Empire
Riverside’s Oldest Church More Open Than Most By Rory O’Sullivan
T
he United Church of Christ is as distinct and diverse as any church, bringing together people from across economic and sexual orientation spectrums. First Congregational Church of Riverside (FCC) is one of the few places of worship that is accepting of everyone.
“And yes we do mean also gay and lesbian,” said Senior Minister Jane Quandt. “Every church says they welcome all people but around gay, lesbian, or transgender, it’s usually we welcome you but we also wish to save you.” “God made me this way,” said Eva-Genevieve Scarborough, who was born a man but transitioned into a woman twelve years ago. Quandt said she remembers the first day
Scarborough came to FCC in 2006. She can remember Scarborough moving from the balcony and slowly moving closer and closer toward the pews until she made it to where she is now, a volunteer with several different FCC programs and attending women’s conferences every year she is able. Scarborough knew that the church accepted the gay and lesbian community but wasn’t sure if continued on page 12

she would be accepted as a trans woman. “I was more and more drawn to attend; I fell in love, I just love it,” said Scarborough. Scarborough said she appreciates that the church has accepted her but also that they are a church of service. The church has a rich history of serving in the community according to church member Donald Miller. The church stood with Chinese residents before and after Riverside’s Chinatown fire in 1893 and even counted some Chinese among their members. Three months after the dedication of the current building on January 25, 1914, FCC was graced with a visit from Booker T. Washington. “Mr. Washington spoke to our church and an overflow audience,” said Miller. “He made a powerful impression on the citizens of that time.” FCC also supported Riverside’s Japanese-

American community holding the assets of many families who were interned. The Harada house was one property that remained intact during the war years and FCC member Sumi Harada occupied it for a time after the war and it is now being prepared as a historical landmark. Miller said that in the stifling midsummer heat of 1871, Isaac Atherton, senior minister and founder of the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles and John North, Founder of the city of Riverside, shared a buggy on the long ride out to what would soon become Riverside. “I have no doubt those early members were progressives much like Mr. North,” said Miller, who said FCC is the oldest assembly in Riverside. “The city of Riverside and the First Congregational Church of Riverside share a great deal of history.” The church has several alumni including Frank Miller, founder of the Mission Inn, who was influential in the current building’s world

nd with that Brenda Wood pastor of Word of Life Ministries International in Riverside kicked off Mount Rubidoux’s 106th Easter Sunday, celebrating what Christians believe signifies the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, 2,000 years ago. They believe Jesus rolled away the stone in the tomb where his body was being kept and ascended back into Heaven after three days. Christian churches in the West celebrate Easter on the first Sunday following the full moon after the vernal equinox on March 21. Therefore, Easter is observed anywhere between March 22 and April 25 every year.
featurestory renowned spanish style. Several mayors have been members of the church including five of the first seven mayors and most recently, former Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge. FCC’s building is a City of Riverside Cultural Landmark, a Riverside County Landmark, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is a brick structure adorned with stained glass all around and has the feeling of an old Hollywood movie church. There are more than 5,100 churches and 1.1 million members across the U.S. according to the United Church of Christ (UCC) website. “The UCC is a church of firsts, a church of extravagant welcome, and a church where …they may all be one” (John 17:21). Rev. Quandt said the church goes out of
its way to accept people from all walks of life. She also said they believe in being “out in the world serving. Not just charity work but dealing with systemic injustice.” The church is still a progressive voice for change and is currently advocating for immigrant farm workers, the LGBT community, the homeless, and ending “America’s prison industrial complex.” “This church has always had a voice in this community,” states Rev. Quandt. “The stories here have been heroic.” On March 19, 1995, FCC became an “open and affirming” congregation, affirming the dignity and worth of all races, ethnicities, ages, abilities, genders, and sexual orientation. Quandt said the choice was made after the killing of Jessy Owens, steps away from the church’s entrance. The church put a large rainbow flag up in support. Quandt has continued her support of the
LGBT community, and performed the first gay marriage in Riverside County after the Supreme Court overturned the gay marriage ban. FCC practices Calvinism referring to the “reformed Tradition of Protestant faith based on the works of John Calvin.” Without higher church courts to ensure doctrinal uniformity, Congregationalists have been more theologically diverse than other Reformed churches. “I think Jesus was a total radical he was totally about compassion, mercy, justice, helping the marginalized, the lost, and the little to be empowered.” “I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I’m saved,” said Scarborough who said she has been a Christian for more than 30-years. “I can feel him working in me. I’ve seen more evidence of the Holy Spirit in my life than I can imagine.”
By Faith The Bible says that by dying, Jesus atoned for the sins of human beings. “I am there because I love people,” said Wood. “I hope people walk away with a greater commitment to God, and that they allow the Holy Spirit to change their lives and give them direction.” Regina Edwards a single mother, who attended with her daughter Elena, was one of the 2,500 to 3,000 people who braved the cold and steep mountain climb, looking for direction. Evangelical, Catholic, Baptist and Disciples of Christ, poured out a message of hope and love to those in attendance. “Just going through life when you’re young,” said Edwards. “It’s been a journey, it was hard, you know”. She wants to spend this year being more involved. Scott Lambert a minister with First Christian Church youth group brought several youth to help out with the event, including Jake Drake, a senior at Ramona High School. He said he needed his faith the most when his grandmother, who he lived with half his life, passed continued on page 23

On Coyote Care Day, April 18, the Seccombe Lake Mural Project launched. This amazing day was thanks to Cal State San Bernardino’s Office of Community Engagement, Inland Empire Job Corps, South Coast Air Quality Management District, San Bernardino Arts Association, San Bernardino Historical Society, Mitla Cafe, Super Burrito, UCR Community Gardens, twenty individual donors, sixty volunteers, and thirty local muralists. Eight murals were completed, eight murals are currently in progress, and 16 more murals are expected. For over a year, SBGN members alongside Alpha Gamma Sigma Delta, Puente Club San Bernardino Valley College, and Facebook volunteers, have committed to picking up trash, sweeping sidewalks, raking the playground area, and removing debris from the lake at the 44-acre park. With support from the City of San Bernardino’s Fine Arts Commission and Parks & Recreation Commission, the group is inviting the community to partake in these historic cultural events to bring art to Seccombe Lake Park. The mural project is split into three phases: the launch on April 18, an event on May 16, and finishing touches on May 30. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable,

featurestory Faith, continued from page 13 away three years ago. “She got diagnosed with cancer, it was tough,” said Drake. “There was pretty much nothing we could do.” “Seeing her in a hospice unable to talk with bed sores all over her body, she was just waiting to die pretty much.” Drake said Lambert helped him out through that time and showed him the love of Jesus. “You have to have faith, the faith really comes in play in times like that,” said Drake. “It’s pretty moving when you put time into young people’s lives and find your faith together,” said Lambert. “To be able to help a young man through a time like that, it makes you feel good inside.” Lambert said he tries as much as he can to give young people a place they can share their faith freely without judgement or condemnation. “It’s such a blessing to my wife.”
Drake was able to share his experiences with his grandmother, with a member of his baseball team who lost his dad. “I was able to be there for him,” said Drake. Lambert said Christianity is all about helping those around you get through the rough patches in life. He said events like this, fellowshipping with other Christians helps you to feel connected. The crowd on Sunday listened to the sermons intently and as the sun broke through the darkness were greeted with hymns from Teen Challenge, singing “Christ the Lord is risen today,” together as one. Shelby Page, 23, from Dallas, Texas, who leads the Teen Challenge Choir said he has seen the power of Jesus work in his life. “I should have been dead,” said Page . Page was addicted to heroin and spent years using the drug. He ended up
becoming homeless, lying, and began stealing to feed his habit. “I wanted to experience real change.” So he “humbled himself, let go of his pride” and came to Teen Challenge Riverside from Dallas, he said. “God was the only one who could fix me.” Page has been clean for a year and credits God for the change. He now spends his time trying to help people any way he can and wants to become a counselor with Teen Challenge in the future. “You want to help someone else as much as you can and show people the love of Jesus,” said Page. “That’s what he died for, so we can all walk in peace and love.” To have your ministry featured contact projects@bpcmediaworks.com
