Today’s Boys and Tomorrow’s Men
Built Around Boys.
As one of only two K–12 boys’ schools in Manhattan, The Browning School offers a distinctly focused educational experience grounded in research, relationships, and intellectual ambition. Across a coherent K–12 journey, boys are known over time without being allowed to stand still. In a community small enough for everyone to matter, a boy has repeated opportunities to speak, create, lead, compete, collaborate, and discover capacities he might not otherwise test. From discussion-based classrooms and advanced STEM offerings to Certificates of Distinction and independent research opportunities, Browning encourages boys to pursue ideas with seriousness, creativity, and confidence.
Grounded in the values of honesty, curiosity, dignity, and purpose, our boys learn to pair intellectual ambition with integrity, empathy, and meaningful engagement with the world. Guided by faculty who specialize in the education and development of boys, Browning combines rigorous academics with a deeply human approach to education—preparing boys not only for selective colleges and universities, but for purposeful lives beyond them.
Understanding Boys Changes Everything. Boys need to be known. Today’s boys are growing up in a world of constant demands, distraction, and change. They need more than academic preparation alone. They require challenge, belonging, purpose, and adults who understand how boys grow. At Browning, boys are known personally by teachers who support and challenge them, while guiding them toward independence. Our teachers build strong relationships with boys and encourage them to think critically, communicate insightfully, and engage deeply with the world around them.
Intellectually ambitious. Deeply personal. Distinctly Browning. Across disciplines, Browning boys learn to ask meaningful questions, defend their thinking, and develop the habits of mind that lead to intellectual confidence. At the same time, boys are known as individuals by teachers who inspire them. Our faculty understand how relationships, trust, and high expectations work together to help boys thrive academically. The result is an educational experience that is both demanding and deeply supportive—one that prepares boys not only for selective colleges and universities, but for thoughtful, purposeful lives beyond the Red Doors.

What Happens When Boys Are The Focus. Boys benefit from an environment where they can fully engage and be themselves. Through organizations such as the International Boys’ Schools Coalition, Browning faculty collaborate with academic thought leaders around the world on research and innovation that celebrates boyhood and unlocks the ways in which boys learn more effectively.
At Browning, whether teaching the skills necessary for academic success, fostering constructive dialogue across difference, or encouraging boys to take risks and participate broadly in school life, we don’t just support our boys as students—we support our students as boys.

Boys thrive when they are challenged and known. At Browning, intellectual ambition and emotional development go hand in hand.
The Browning Experience Curiosity, dignity, honesty, and purpose are lived here every day. At Browning, values are not separate from school life; they shape it. From the youngest ages, our boys learn to ask open-minded questions, honor the dignity of others, act with integrity, and pursue meaning through exploration and discovery. We know that upholding these values isn’t simple, but it’s made easier in a school where each boy is valued for his individual strengths, and he is guided by adults who believe in our mission to foster the growth of courageous and compassionate men of intellect and integrity who aspire to contribute meaningfully to our world.
