Dear Browning friends, As the world becomes ever more complex and as frictionless online spaces entice many boys with the effortless companionship of like-minded individuals, there remains a physical space where boys have to experience the tensions that lead to growth—and that place is school. But the classroom is not the only place in which a boy has this feeling—extracurricular and cocurricular programs provide this as well, and are foundational to a boy’s development of his passions and purpose, as well as his communication skills, capacity for empathy, understanding of human relationships, and strength of identity.

In this issue of the Buzzer, we focus on our boys’ pursuits beyond the classroom. From rock climbing to robotics, Shakespeare to social impact, and many other pursuits in between, our boys develop new expertise and explore friendships and collaboration based on shared interests. These activities build community, provide leadership opportunities, and often offer boys ways to connect with students from other schools. They also reinforce the capacities that we want our boys to acquire and hone through our signature Four Core Skills program—interpersonal connection, constructive dialogue, studentship, and storytelling—that are needed for boys to fulfill their potential beyond mere subject matter knowledge.

Activities like playing in the rock band or fundraising for a cause that is meaningful to them allow boys to have moments where their potential is actualized not through the assignments of adults, but via their own interests and aspirations. Though events like these are a routine part of school life, they are better understood as meeting key developmental needs by offering boys an authentic way to exercise responsibility and care in the world—what Browning generally refers to as purpose. To see our guys’ energy and conviction in these pursuits is to catch boys doing more than simply fulfilling a school obligation or, worse still, pursuing activities merely to round out a résumé; it is to witness them on a healthy journey toward purposeful manhood.

We live in a time where we understandably hear a great deal about the inability of boys and men to feel effective, fulfilled, and authentic. We should recognize that the path to efficacy, fulfillment, and authenticity is lined not only with academic awards and individual accomplishments, but with opportunities to exercise agency, take responsibility, and care for the communities of which one is a part. Our dozens of clubs and activities provide just such a venue. For boys, these are the building blocks of healthy manhood, and thus stand as a vital part of a Browning education.

New Voices on the Board Michèle Brazil is Board Chair at Fiver Children’s Foundation, a nonprofit supporting youth through long-term leadership and life-skills programming. She also serves on the Board and Membership Committee of the Central Park Conservancy and is the Founder of Michèle Lallemand Brazil Consulting. She and her husband, Joseph, have three children, including Rhys ’30.

Vice President of the Parents Association Jamie Foran is Managing Director at Avanz Capital, an emerging markets private equity firm she helped launch. As an active Browning parent volunteer, her efforts include support of the Book Fair and other community events.

Browning Mathematicians Multiply Their Successes

The Upper School Math Team had a standout year marked by impressive accomplishments and historic firsts. Students earned top honors in the AMC, MathCON, the Downtown Mathematics Invitational, the Purple Comet international competition, and the Horace Mann Math Competition, where Browning captured first place as a team.

Adding to the year’s achievements, Max J. ’30 was named the 8th Grade National Champion at the MathCON Finals in Chicago, earning the top finish among more than 35,000 participants nationwide.

“The Upper School Math Team’s curiosity transforms math challenges and problem-solving into learning opportunities for everyone,” Math Teacher Judit Resika reflected. “Two of our members, Austin C. ’27 and Brandon F. ’27, also advanced to the MathCON Finals, where Austin earned a bronze medal and Brandon received an honorable mention.

Exciting New Early Summer Program

Panther Passport, Browning’s new early summer program for Lower School boys, kicked off the season with three weeks of learning, exploration, and fun! Boys spent their days exploring STEM, chess, and sports on campus, while enjoying daily outings to Central Park and field trips to the Liberty Science Center and New York Hall of Science.

Guided by Browning faculty and Upper School student counselors, campers stayed active, curious, and connected throughout the program.

Megan Ryan, Director of Today’s Boys, Tomorrow’s Men Programming, says the Middle School Assembly Club is led by a group of Grade 8 students who volunteer to lend their voice and vision to our biweekly divisional gathering.

In addition to generating ideas—for activities or guests— that support our School’s mission and values, these students are the face of assembly. They lead their classmates through assembly traditions including our mission statement, school song, Mood Meter check-in, and announcements, while also introducing activities and guests. Perhaps most importantly, they model and encourage positive, supportive behavior and engagement from the audience. Student leadership in spaces like assembly creates opportunities for our boys to think about ways to bring honesty, curiosity, dignity, and purpose to life on a bigger stage while encouraging each boy to do his part to build a community of care behind the Red Doors.

John Young, Upper School World Languages Chair, reports that Browning’s Global Student Exchange Program continues to expand opportunities for Upper School boys to engage meaningfully with the wider world. Now in its third year, the three-week reciprocal exchange, organized with the Marymount School and partner schools abroad, connects students with communities in Spain, France, and Italy. The program begins with Browning families hosting international students, fostering cross-cultural understanding and friendships within the school community.

Later in the year, seven of our boys traveled to Barcelona, Orléans (France), and Rome, where they attended classes, practiced language skills, and experienced daily life with host families, building independence and a broader global perspective.

Chess instructor Giorgi Bakhtadze notes that chess is a meaningful part of student life at Browning, fostering strategic thinking, resilience, patience, and sportsmanship.

While students are introduced to the game in class, their enthusiasm extends well beyond instruction into a thriving network of clubs and after-school play. There, boys eagerly sharpen skills, analyze games, and

learn from one another in a collaborative setting. Many go on to proudly compete on the school team, with some continuing to follow their passion into high school and college. A new space for student life

This year, Browning unveiled the newly renovated Panther Den, a space designed for Middle School boys to move, compete, and spend time together outside the classroom.

Featuring traverse climbing walls and a pingpong table, the Den has quickly become a favorite gathering spot during recess. Boys challenge one another to complete climbing routes, race across the wall, or simply hang out between classes. The space encourages teamwork and problem-solving while giving students a healthy outlet for energy during the school day. More than a recreation room, the Panther Den has become a hub for friendship and community.

Many Coffeehouse performers began learning their instruments this year, making the event an opportunity to showcase their developing skills.

Having completed its second year, the Panther LEGO Robotics Team gives Middle School boys a hands-on opportunity to explore robotics with creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. Students compete in regional robotics competitions, representing Browning while building collaborative STEM skills and confidence.

Middle School boys take part in an annual Shakespeare production in collaboration with girls from Brearley School, moving from audition and rehearsal to a fully staged performance.

The process builds confidence and a deeper understanding of language and character as boys take on complex roles and bring classical texts

Buddies programs strengthen connections across divisions by creating meaningful relationships between younger and older boys. In Lower School, Kindergarten boys are paired with older peers in the same division who help welcome them into the community while modeling leadership and kindness. This year, a new initiative brought Middle School mentors together with Kindergarteners for shared story sessions that build literacy skills alongside trust and confidence. More than academic support, these partnerships encourage a culture of care, where students learn to show up for one another across the school community.

Thinking on your feet

Aaron Grill, Director of Innovation & Technology, reports that the Browning Rocketry program was born entirely from student curiosity and passion. What began as a small group of boys asking questions has grown into a dedicated team of engineers, builders, and problem-solvers designing and constructing rockets from the ground up, including carbon fiber frames, custom nose cones, and avionics systems.

Since its first launch, the team has achieved remarkable milestones, including flights reaching 1,500 feet in Connecticut, 4,095 feet in Pine Island, NY, and an estimated 40,000-foot launch in the Mojave Desert. Along the way, retrieving and tracking rockets has underscored how ultimately the program is about more than altitude; it is about perseverance, collaboration, and the excitement of building and launching something by hand.

Coach Katherine Weinhoff P’10 reports that mock trial gives Browning students the opportunity to develop skills in public speaking, critical thinking, collaboration, and advocacy through simulated civil and criminal trials. Students prepare legal arguments, examine witnesses, respond to objections, and compete against schools across New York City. A respected presence in the city’s mock trial community, Browning has advanced deep into tournaments many times, including a Final Four appearance. Beyond competition, mock trial teaches boys to think logically, communicate persuasively, work as a team, and approach challenges creatively and respectfully. The program builds confidence, camaraderie, and leadership, while channeling students’ enthusiasm into meaningful intellectual engagement and shared achievement.

The Upper School Theater Workshop gives our eldest boys the opportunity to collaborate on scenes and monologues spanning comedy and drama, from Shakespeare to contemporary works. At Browning, service is woven into the fabric of student life. Across all three divisions, students are putting the School’s values into practice in the world beyond the Red Doors.

Lower Schoolers planted community gardens. Middle Schoolers spent a full day of service supporting organizations like God’s Love We Deliver and Ronald McDonald House: cooking meals, stocking shelves, and sitting with families who need company. Upper Schoolers led initiatives that donated LEGO materials to help launch robotics leagues in the Dominican Republic and that delivered school supplies in Argentina. Browning boys understand that purpose is something you build, not something you receive.

or many boys, the school nurse is the first and only place that they engage with a healthcare provider on their own terms,” says K–8 Nurse Oswaldo Luciano, FNP-BC, RN, NCSN. “We are often the first clinician to detect patterns, risks, and emerging health issues.”

Browning welcomed two new nurses to campus this year—Nurse Luciano, who entered school nursing at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School during the COVID outbreak, and Sam Hoelzle, who was formerly Director of Nursing at Columbia University Student Health Center. Both have extensive experience in health education, and are passionate about helping young men become more comfortable seeking healthcare.

“A lot of men think ‘I have to manage conditions independently, I need to toughen up.’ They don’t have the language for what they are feeling and what is needed,” says Nurse Hoelzle. “So if we make accessing healthcare as practical and easy as possible for boys, it’s not only going to be beneficial for the individual,

it’s going to be beneficial for society.”

Nurse Luciano, who previously worked at NewYork Presbyterian / Columbia University, as Director of Male Health Education for the Young Men’s Clinic, adds that “Boys’ health is not just about their biology or managing risk-taking behavior. It’s deeply tied to how we are socialized and how we understand vulnerability, independence, and communication.”

Although neither nurse had previously worked in an all-boys setting, they were immediately attracted to Browning.

“When I visited, the boys were so polite,” Nurse Luciano says, “Boys held the door open for me, they said thank you—they were real gentlemen.”

Nurse Hoelzle wanted the opportunity to return to a patient-facing role after years in administration. “Working with adolescents appealed to me because being a nurse educator is the role that I love the most. And I’m not only providing medical expertise—when I was a boy, I went through some of these things myself.”

Nurses Luciano and Hoelzle also spread their knowledge beyond the nurse’s office.

In February, Nurse Luciano presented a workshop at the New York State Association of Independent School’s Student Support Conference entitled “Raising Healthy, Confident Boys: A Collaborative Approach to Fostering Healthy Masculinity and Emotional Intelligence.” Both nurses followed FEATURE

this up with a related presentation for Browning faculty. Additionally, Nurse Hoelzle teaches Grade 9 health, where he introduces the boys to the practical realities of taking charge of their health.

School nurses are often the first to spot illness trends in children, or notice harmful behaviors such as vaping or disordered eating. “We sit at the intersection of clinical care, public health, and early intervention—often before any other part of the healthcare system is involved,” says Nurse Luciano.

Both nurses stress that families have a role to play in making sure their boys are comfortable talking about their health.

“Ask your sons to talk about how they are feeling—not as a throwaway question, but to get actual information,” Nurse Hoelzle says. “How does your body feel? What’s going on with you? What’s going on in your mind?” Nurse Luciano adds, “By the time that boys are seeing clinicians on their own, they’ve already had too much messaging about what they should and should not share. So much of men’s health is contingent on silence that has been learned.”

While they never know what challenges each day will bring, the nurses enjoy providing care at Browning.

“The community health component of school nursing is wonderful,” says Nurse Hoelzle. “It’s not only the individual that we’re taking care of—if you do this job well, you’re taking care of the entire school community.”

Launching a New Tradition of Giving Raising a total of $412,925 over two days, this community-wide fundraising campaign was a great success. Starting off strong with an Alumni Giving Day on March 11, followed by a Giving Day for parents on April 29, this new tradition captures our community’s commitment to annual giving, which helps sustain and support our excellent faculty, innovative educational practices, and access to the complete Browning experience for every boy.

Parent Giving Day began with a coffee cart generously provided by Matt and Carolyn Lamphier P’24, ’27, as students shared notes about what they are most grateful for and what makes the Browning community special.

“We just didn’t see him anywhere else” A Grade 12 mother reflects on finding the right fit for her son.

Over the course of his Browning journey, Pablo Ramirez-Salgado ’26 embraced opportunities across academics, leadership, and extracurricular life, discovering new passions and growing in confidence.

This fall, he will attend Princeton University to study economics and art.

His mother, Angelica Salgado, reflects on the transformation she has witnessed over his time at the School.

How did Browning first come onto your radar when you were exploring schools?

I was given a list of schools to consider, and honestly, it never crossed my mind that we would choose a boys’ school.

But as we toured different schools, I just couldn’t picture Pablo at any of them.

When we visited Browning, it felt different immediately. The student leading our tour was so polite, and as we walked through the hallways, boys smiled at us and said, “Good afternoon.” I remember thinking, this place is different. There was warmth and a sense of community that stood out from everywhere else we visited.

What made Browning the right choice for your son?

I didn’t have to ask Pablo what he thought after the tour, I could see it on his face.

We were also drawn to the small size of the School and the idea that teachers would truly know him as an individual.

When he was admitted and we attended events before school started, families approached us to introduce themselves and welcome us. We felt supported right away. Most importantly, every day Pablo came home happy. As a parent, that mattered more than anything.

During Pablo’s years at Browning, what experiences have mattered most in shaping who he is today?

I saw tremendous growth in Pablo at Browning, both academically and personally. He learned how to ask for help, communicate effectively, and advocate

for himself with teachers. He grew from a shy little boy into a confident young man who speaks up, takes initiative, and is willing to try new things. Browning also gave him opportunities to discover interests he may not have explored otherwise.

He developed a passion for art and realized he could pursue a range of interests.

I think that openness to try something new and believe you can succeed is one of the biggest gifts Browning gave him.

school would make it harder for Pablo to relate to girls or build different kinds of friendships. One day I asked him, “How does it feel to be surrounded by only boys?” and he told me, “Mom, between boys, we support each other.” That stayed with me. I’ve seen the friendships and support systems these boys build. My advice to families is to keep an open mind.

You may be surprised by what you find.

How did Browning support Pablo through the college process?

I remember asking Pablo, “What are you going to do about the college process?” and he said, “Don’t worry, Mom. I’ve got this.” Honestly, I don’t think he could have approached the process with that level of confidence without the support he received at Browning. When he told me he was admitted to Princeton, I was shocked—amazed, impressed, and realizing that now he had all the tools. The academic support mattered, but it was more than that. Every part of Browning helped shape him into someone who believes in himself.

What would you tell a family considering Browning but unsure about the boys’ school experience?

I used to wonder whether being at a boys’

WINTER SEASON The Panthers wrapped up an exciting winter season defined by grytte, growth, and strong competition across all levels.

Varsity Basketball closed the season with resilience and teamwork through a challenging stretch of injuries and close games, showing real promise for the future as key players return next year.

Varsity Squash made history, finishing 14–2 and winning Browning’s first-ever NYCAL Championship before heading to Nationals in Philadelphia. Varsity Table Tennis also captured the Independent School Table Tennis Championship with a 12–2 record. JV Basketball

finished 11–9 after a 0–4 start, building steady momentum with strong wins that highlighted their development, depth, and discipline. Our 7/8 hoopsters competed with energy and cohesion all season, emerging as one of the most improved groups in the league. SPRING SEASON The Panthers delivered one of the program’s most memorable seasons in recent years, highlighted by Varsity Baseball capturing the NYCAL Championship after a standout postseason run fueled by strong pitching and timely hitting!

Our 7/8 Baseball team continued its dominance as well, winning its third straight NYCAL Championship while finishing with an impressive 8–2 record.

Varsity Tennis battled throughout a competitive schedule, with the entire roster returning next season and a bright future ahead. Varsity Golf showed steady growth and resilience throughout the spring, while also returning every player for next year. Varsity Track earned a third-place finish at the NYCAL Championship Meet and continues to build momentum with growing participation and strong performances across the

Three Questions for Juan Reyes ’86

2026 Alumnus Achievement Award Recipient

The Charles W. Cook ’38 Alumnus Achievement Award, established in 1991 in honor of Browning’s fourth head of school, is presented to an alumnus or alumni displaying the finest qualities of citizenship and distinguished achievement, in either the private or public sector.

Our 2026 recipient is Juan D. Reyes III ’86, a highly regarded law firm partner and trusted advisor recognized for his depth of knowledge in private equity, land use, development, and regulatory law. He attended Browning from 1982 to 1986 and has been a member of the Alumni Council for over 25 years, even serving as president for part of his tenure. Juan is a proud and dedicated alumnus who consistently gives back to his alma mater with his knowledge, time, and generosity. In honor of his award, Juan was asked to reflect on his time at Browning with three questions: What is your favorite memory from your time as a student?

What I remember and cherish from Browning is the passion our teachers brought to learning. They exposed us to so many ideas, books, films, and experiences in ways that made learning feel exciting and lasting. Years later, I still think about teachers like Mr. Ingrisani, whose enthusiasm for Shakespeare stayed with me long after graduation, and Mr. Pelz, who introduced us to sciencefiction films and ideas that I still reference today. Looking back, I realize how much Browning shaped the way I think and how deeply those teachers influenced my curiosity and love of learning.

At Browning, I learned the importance of friendship, respect, and appreciating people from different backgrounds and perspectives. What always stood out to me was that we could all be ourselves. We all had friends across many different groups, whether through theater, athletics, or just everyday school life, and there was a real respect for individuality. Those experiences helped shape the way I approach relationships and collaboration today, both personally and professionally, and gave me the skills and values that have guided me throughout my career in law, government, and business.

What values did you learn at Browning that helped shape the rest of your life?

What keeps you connected and motivates your continued support of Browning?

The strong sense of community, including the relationships that have lasted long after graduation, keeps me connected. Through the years, I’ve stayed close with classmates, connected with alumni across generations, and had the opportunity to support the School through the Alumni Council and advisory work. Helping build and sustain the Alumni Association has created a lasting sense of belonging, and Browning continues to feel like a second home to me, grounded in friendship, mentorship, and shared experiences.

Close friends Dick Rudick ’57 and Bob Gimbel ’57 continue to show up for each other and for Browning. As is their annual tradition, both attended the Reunion luncheon and enjoyed catching up as they celebrated 68 years since graduating.

1980s

Pete Chelkowski ’87 recently codirected and produced One With the Whale, a documentary about Indigenous whaling traditions in Alaska. The film earned a Peabody Award and received an Emmy Award nomination. Read more at browning.edu/alumninews.

Lin Wells ’63 lives in Fairfax, VA, with his wife, Linda, near their two sons and four grandchildren. The couple is celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year.

He also marks 20 years of STAR-TIDES, a global network he founded that connects universities, governments, and nonprofits to share practical approaches to disaster response, resilience, and community preparedness.

Shawn Cherry ’75 (left) attended April’s Alumni Reunion after missing last year’s celebration of his 50th milestone reunion. After careers spanning finance, education, and more, he is now happily retired in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Jon Mason ’89 recently cofounded Mason-Lewis Entertainment, a New Yorkbased talent and literary management company representing artists across film, television, and theater. Current clients include Natalie Venetia Belcon, Daniel London, and Frederick Weller.

Andy Sandberg ’01 is producing and directing a season of new American plays at Riverside Studios beginning this September, bringing emerging U.S. theater works to London audiences.

Jonas Borra ’03 appeared on the cover of the Sutton Place Social February ’26 issue, highlighting his career across athletics, modeling, coaching, and entrepreneurship.

Class of ’92 alums Eric Grant, Andrew West, and Mike Dorra reunited at the first Basketball Open Run in the new Upper School, proving that Panther spirit and their jump shots are still going strong.

Jerry Pi ’95 completed the Shore 2 Shore 50K Ultramarathon on Long Island in April, adding to his impressive running résumé.

Hoopsters from the Classes of 1992–2025 continued a beloved Browning tradition in the new gym this year, where the Even Years defeated the Odds 84–77 in a fast-paced, high-energy matchup.

Oliver Messler ’21 is spending the summer interning at a regenerative farm in Tuscany, Italy. This fall, he will move to London to pursue a master’s degree in landscape architecture at The Bartlett School of Architecture.

Joseph Fabrizi ’22 graduated from Indiana University in May with a bachelor’s degree in finance. At IU, he was admitted to the Hutton Honors College and named a Founders Scholar.

He will begin his career in commercial real estate.

Adolfo Murillo ’23, who helped build Browning’s robotics program as a student, returned to the FIRST Robotics World Championship in Houston, TX, this May as a game announcer.

Jonathan Wallace ’23, a bioengineering and neuroengineering student at the University of Pennsylvania, created and launched Engram, an AI assistant that builds a persistent model of users’ goals, projects, and thinking patterns.

Benjamin Lefkowitz ’24 completed his sophomore year at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications and is spending the summer interning with the Mad Dog Sports Radio show on SiriusXM.

Record Cohort, Remarkable Work Browning’s signature Certificates of Distinction program gives Upper Schoolers the opportunity to pursue independent inquiry beyond the traditional curriculum.

Now in its fourth year, the program reached a new milestone, with a record 13 seniors completing the rigorous requirements and earning recognition for their outstanding work in engineering, data science, humanities, and fine arts.

Aaron Grill, Director of Innovation & Technology and advisor to the program, noted that this year’s projects stood out for how personal they were to the students. “While every year brings impressive research and projects, this year’s work was especially meaningful because students were exploring questions connected to their own experiences, passions, values, and aspirations,” he said.

Projects reflected a range of personal interests, including examining food insecurity and potential solutions to improve

food distribution; investigating the science and artistry behind music engineering and sound perception; creating artwork inspired by family memory; and delving into Browning’s archives to trace the School’s evolution from its founding to the present day.

Mr. Grill credits both the students and their faculty advisors for the depth and quality of the work. “Our advisors challenged students to move beyond surface-level interests and pursue questions that truly mattered to them,” he said. “The deeper goal of the program is helping students discover what captures their curiosity or gives them a sense of purpose, plus how they might contribute to the world around them. This year’s graduates embraced that challenge.”
