Letter from the President of the Board of Trustees

Members of the Browning Community—I am delighted to have this opportunity to update you on our Upper School Building Project, which is progressing on schedule. We have secured the required New York City building approvals for a design that has been slightly tweaked from our original plans to provide even better configurations of new state-of-the-art classrooms and expanded gathering spaces for our boys and our entire community. Over 50,000 square feet of new academic, research, athletic, communal, and conference spaces will be completed and available for use at some juncture during the 2024-2025 school year. Some highlights of the new learning spaces include: • A regulation Gymnasium Center and Weight Room • An expansive Community Commons for lectures and assemblies, and • Sixteen high-tech classrooms combined with dedicated STEM and Tech Labs. I would be remiss in not immediately thanking two of our long-serving Trustees Federico Infantino P ’23, ’25, ’27 and Raul Pineda P ’24 for working tirelessly to help secure favorable bond financing for this project. This funding is necessary to supplement support from Building Our Future: A Comprehensive Campaign to Advance Browning’s Mission. Although generous

team’s ultimate objective to surpass the national high-school record of 45,482 feet above ground. Members of the Key Society bring Browning’s core values to life through exemplary ambassadorship, demonstrating a commitment to the School, as well as gratitude for their years at Browning. This coming year, expanded opportunities to sharpen their leadership skills while giving back to Browning will be offered to Middle and Upper School students chosen to give tours to prospective families, speak on panels, or host admitted students. The curiosity and spark exhibited in the opportunities above also prepare our boys well for their future studies. Speaking of which, the Class of 2023 earned admission to an impressive roster of the finest institutions of higher learning in the world. Congratulations are due to our outstanding graduates and teachers, as well as to our spectacular Director of College Guidance Sanford Pelz ’71, P ’12, ’12. While college enrollment is not our principal way of measuring the success of our boys and our program, we are certainly proud of their achievements and the goals they have met. Of course, none of this would be possible without your faith in a Browning education. Thank you for your continued trust and support.

Community Members—I continue to be humbled by how our community—students, faculty, parents, alumni—upholds our mission, and fully lives the values of compassion, courage, dignity, and purpose, all of which is inspired by the deep learning that happens at Browning, inside and outside classrooms. These teachable moments and events occur more and more frequently as we expand the curricular and extra-curricular offerings available to our students, along with the expertise brought to the table by our talented, dedicated, and caring faculty. A few examples: The Certificates of Distinction Program, which began several years ago with just two offerings, expanded to four this year, allowing boys to express their creativity and extend their learning in the fine arts, humanities, and applied sciences. Our program not only provides a unique opportunity for students who fulfill the requirement for each Certificate, but also sets Browning apart from its peer institutions with this singular approach to independent study and exceptional access to spectacular mentors. Grounded (no disrespect intended) in work accomplished in the 2022–2023 school year, our Rocketry Team, led by Browning’s Director of Innovation and Technology Aaron Grill, traveled West this summer after successfully designing and constructing a high-thrust rocket. The team visited SpaceX to learn from the engineers there and get valuable feedback for the subsequent soaring launch of its projectile to an altitude of 16,000 feet in the Mojave Desert—an interim step in the

donors have been responsive to our need for philanthropy for specific capital projects, the scale of the new building requires outside underwriting as well. I must also once again thank Trustee Jerry Pi ’95, P ’32 and former Trustee Phil Hofmann P ’20, ’24 for continuing to monitor the day-to-day demolition and construction at the new site. These individuals have been ably complemented by the diligence of both Browning’s CFO John Campbell and Director of Facilities and Security Kenny Marshall. The good news doesn’t stop there: by enrolling 13 new 6th grade students—who are, coincidently, matriculating from 13 different schools—we are able to add a third section to this grade. The Class of 2030 will be the first expanded class to enjoy the new facilities along with the benefits and friendships of a slightly larger cohort, but one that is still small enough for every boy to be known and recognized for his individual talents and character. As always, I ask you to be as generous as you can with your support in this school year and beyond so that we can continue to reach our ambitious Campaign goals. Your investment in Browning’s future is a wise one indeed.

Pursuing academic passions in our Certificates of Distinction Program

Inspired by the model of defending a graduate school thesis, the Certificates of Distinction Program fosters a unique sense of autonomy for our Upper School boys. Scholars take full ownership of their learning by delving deep into a project aligned with their academic interests and engaging in open conversations about their research.
