Sustainable Design Browning Day’s sustainable design services are offered to our clients and project partners who desire expertise and performance-driven solutions with regard to systems thinking, integrative design processes, green building ratings systems such as LEED® , WELL AP, and SITES™, protection of natural assets, on-site renewable energy systems, innovative stormwater and wastewater management, daylight, and energy analysis.

Browning Day recognizes that the market for highperformance projects is growing and energy codes are becoming stricter. This changing landscape is shifting project focus from soft goals toward quantifiable metrics regarding energy/water consumption, operating costs, and returns on investments. To address this, Browning Day leverages a wide range of performance modeling tools in an integrative design process that enables our project teams to go beyond design rules-of-thumb to evidence-based decision-making, resulting in better solutions for our clients.

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS Center for the Sciences BUTLER UNIVERSITY Indianapolis, Ind.

Continuing 25 years of experience working on Butler University’s campus, the school selected Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf to provide exterior architecture services for a new science addition.

With science at the foundation of many of Butler’s academic programs, a new laboratory and classroom facility is planned as an addition to two adjacent renovated facilities - Gallahue Hall and the Holcomb Building.

The project will consist of a new 40,000 GSF addition, approximately 120,000 GSF of renovations for Gallahue Hall, and approximately 60,000 GSF of renovations for the Holcomb building.

The new atrium space will better connect the various component of the new and renovated facilities. It will serve as the central “hub” for the sciences and is envisioned to be a destination place for the new science center. The atrium will provide soft seating areas for informal and formal gatherings. It will also incorporate multi-media technology areas for presentations or for displaying department classroom content. The Center for the Sciences is tracking LEED Gold certification.

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS School of Global and International Studies INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

The Global and International Studies Building, a mix of both office and classroom areas, centralizes diverse programs currently spread out over the Indiana University Bloomington campus.

The new building houses nearly 300 dedicated faculty offices, in addition to large areas for workstations integrated amongst the offices. The auditorium, 13 classrooms, and six seminar rooms provide registrar-controlled educational space along the bottom two floors. Large and small conference rooms are dispersed throughout the upper floors.

The exterior architecture looks both to the past and to the future of the campus. The exterior façades are rendered in modern adaptations of recognizable details from the historic buildings on campus. While the Jordan Avenue façade is familiarly massive with punched openings and grouped windows, the multi-story lobby is a transparent glass enclosure that is designed to permit views within and beyond its boundaries as well as to and from Wells Library. The curved west wing forms a radial edge along The Arboretum, further integrating building and site.

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS Eskenazi Museum of Art Renovation INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf and Ennead Architects are currently in the design phase of renovating the Indiana University Eskenazi Museum of Art. The original 112,000 square-foot building was designed by I.M. Pei and opened in 1982.

The scope of the project is to expand and enhance the museum program within the existing envelope of the building. Critical to the exploration was considering the future role of the library within the building and access to the collections for research and scholarship could be re-imagined. As the study progressed, specific interventions to revitalize the museum as a vital crossroads on campus were organized around a series of seven important themes – campus landscape, building identity, arrival/ orientation and visitor experience, galleries, collections and conservations spaces, connections to the curriculum, administration and operations.

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS Center for Student Success and Learning, Life and Leadership MARIAN UNIVERSITY Indianapolis, Ind.

To serve as a common hub and create a highlevel student experience, Marian University tasked Browning Day to design a quality dining space that offers modernized and current food service trends while keeping up with the university’s values. The new building will attract students with an inviting food service operation while allowing the university to utilize under their current staffing capacity.

The design provides an open dining concept called The Commons where anyone can use the space while feeling connected to the food service function, providing a variety of seating options to allow for around-the-clock use.

An indoor fireplace will become a focal point inside the dining commons to draw people into the space. An outdoor terrace can be used for dining or as a stage for speaking events and faces the center campus lawn area.

The $11 million, 125,000 sq. ft. project is multi-phased and has several architectural, interior design and landscape architectural components. It will include the renovation of the current dining areas into classrooms as well as different entry areas from the outside and from current buildings.

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS Wells Library Bookmark[et] Eatery INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

Located on the ground floor of the Wells Library on Indiana University’s Bloomington campus, the Bookmark[et] has been completely renovated to serve the needs of contemporary students. Prior to this renovation, the space was dated and service flow was inefficient and tight. By completely demolishing the previous construction and finishes, Browning Day was able to provide a bright and cheery food service space for the IU students.

Containing more than 9,500 square feet, the space as reconfigured provides accommodation for 150 diners with five new food service venues - International, Panini, the Bakehouse, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and Gelato. New food service stations and prep kitchen to support the venues are provided.

With new walls, ceilings, floor finishes and furnishings the space is now fresh and modern.

BEFORE

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS Horticultural Building Studio Renovation PURDUE UNIVERSITY West Lafayette, Ind.

The goal of the Purdue Horticulture Building Rooms 117A and 117B design studio renovation and roof replacement was to create a highly functional, engaging and contemporary studio space for Landscape Architecture students.

The existing structure was built in phases during the 1920s and 1930s, and presented several challenges due to its lack of accessibility, size constraints, inefficient mechanical systems, and outdated furnishings and finishes.

Browning Day collaboratively created a solution that raised the uses and efficiencies to modern-day standards, up to par with Purdue’s outstanding and highly-ranked Landscape Architecture programs. The unique and positive identity and experience the design team created for the department will carry through to other studios in the building.

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS Jacob School of Music East Studio Building INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

The East Studio of the internationally acclaimed Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University further enhances the school’s world-class reputation, providing practice and office space befitting a school of Jacobs’ stature.

The facility accommodates 84 faculty teaching studios and music practice rooms, and administrative and Dean’s offices. Browning Day’s landscape architects provided leadership on the master plan and coordinated the utility relocation planning for the East Studio Building.

Responsibilities included the site and landscape design for a 5.25-acre site with a 20-foot grade change.

In addition to the East Studio Building, the project involved an addition to the Music Arts Center to include two large rehearsal spaces and percussion rehearsal space. This project is certified LEED Gold.

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS Emily W. Hundley Library ST. CATHARINE COLLEGE St. Catharine, Ky.

St. Catharine College near Springfield, Ky. needed a new sustainably-designed 21st Century library that respects the architectural language established on campus.

The Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf design team rose up to the challenge with a building that is both traditional and modern. The design maximizes daylight, and offers stateof-the-art technology ensuring the library is a destination place on campus where students would want to study or simply hangout.

The library utilizes raised-floor plenum systems throughout and a geothermal heat pump heating and cooling system.

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS Herron School of Art & Design Eskenazi Hall IUPUI Indianapolis, Ind.

The design of Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hall encompasses a creative and complete transformation of a former IU School of Law building, which resulted in 36,000 square feet of renovated space and a 129,000-squarefoot addition.

The new facilities provide the Herron School of Art with more than 70 art studios and classrooms, a gallery, an auditorium, an 8,000-square-foot library, and faculty and administrative offices, as well as exterior landscaped courts for display of sculpture.

Clerestory windows provide north light on the second floor and a new central corridor links studios and other programmed spaces to an outdoor overlook of a prominent city park. The design and finishes complement the architecture of the adjacent University Library and Natatorium.

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS Krannert Building Third Floor East End Renovation PURDUE UNIVERSITY West Lafayette, Ind.

Purdue University implemented a master plan for the Krannert Building on its campus, and hired Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf to design a renovation based on the master plan’s findings. This project was the first major renovation of the 7,300 square-foot Krannert Building Third Floor East End wing since it was constructed in 1960. The wing was given a complete interior renovation and new furniture turning the outdated space into a modern PhD student and faculty workspace with active student spaces, a library and individual office spaces.

Browning Day’s design provided a high-end sophisticated workspace for the department to use for recruitment and enhanced future collaboration between PhD students and permanent faculty. The project also used demountable wall systems for offices to allow for modern design and flexibility in future planning.

Along with interior and furniture changes, this historic building needed a retrofitted new fan coil unit and an update to the existing building systems.

ACADEMIC BUILDINGS Chaffee Hall Exterior Masonry, ADA Accessibility and Classroom Renovation PURDUE UNIVERSITY West Lafayette, Ind.

Browning Day continued its relationship with Purdue University to design the exterior masonry, a restroom and a classroom renovation at Chaffee Hall.

Exterior site work included designing the outside entry points to meet ADA accessibility requirements, exterior building rain screen to remediate water infiltration in the exterior masonry, interior renovation of a classroom with new furniture, and the renovation of the first-floor restrooms to meet ADA accessibility requirements. The classroom was turned into an auditorium style education room with tiered seating to enhance collaboration and flexibility of meeting types.

ATHLETICS

ATHLETICS Indiana University Natatorium IUPUI Indianapolis, Ind.

Designed by Browning Day and completed in 1982, the Indiana University Natatorium set the standard for competitive aquatic facilities in the United States.

The 220,000-square-foot complex contains three pools, including a 50-meter competition pool, a 50-meter instructional pool and a diving well. Its depth ranging from 9 to 10 feet, the competitive pool ranks as one of the fastest in the world.

The design of the space and the close proximity of the spectators to the competition create a venue for an athlete’s best performance. Up to 4,500 spectators can be accommodated by a combination of chair and bench seating.

In 2016, Browning Day was part of the design team that completed a 21-month and $20 million, five phase renovation to upgrade and restore the aging facility.

ATHLETICS IUB Armstrong Soccer Complex INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, In.

Browning Day was tasked with designing the replacement of an almost 40-year old grandstand, and an addition to the Bill Armstrong Stadium at Indiana University.

The new design needed to be a two-story structure that would enhance and update the spaces used by the men’s and women’s soccer teams. The first floor would feature a lobby, team room, warm up room, and men’s and women’s locker rooms. An additional challenge would be to include a space for the Little 500 race that would also use the stadium.

The building would act as a backdrop to the soccer field and the main grandstands needed to be located on the opposite side.

This new facility would be highly visible to the spectators.

An architectural envelope would also be designed to be highly insulated and mechanical system needed to be energy efficient.

ATHLETICS Bev Lewis Center UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS Fayetteville, Ar.

Browning Day designed a special place for the Women’s Athletics teams at the University of Arkansas.

It was the first athletic building built to the needs of female athletes, and represents a milestone in history for the University and the state.

From the custom-made lifting stations to the one-of-a-kind layout of the 15,000 square foot Razorback Gymnastics training facility, the Bev Lewis Center for Women’s Athletics lives up to is name as the focus of the University of Arkansas’ female student athletes.

The Center was selected by both the Arkansas and Indiana chapters of the American Institute for Architects as design award winners in 2003. It was chosen as a Facility of Merit from hundreds of facilities across America as one of the top Athletic venues in 2004.

ATHLETICS Ken Byers Tennis Center GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Atlanta, Ga.

The Ken Byers Tennis Center project is replacing an existing tennis complex on the campus of Georgia Institute of Technology.

The site components include 6 competition courts, 4 practice courts and an indoor tennis center with 6 practice courts. The competition courts will have spectator seating on the south base line to accommodate 500 fixed seats.

Natural turf berm seating will be provided at the ends of the courts for lawn seating.

The indoor tennis center will be constructed of a pre-engineered metal building that has been architecturally treated to respond in kind to its context and other campus facilities. Connected to the indoor practice courts are locker rooms for both men’s and women’s teams, training rooms for the athletes, spectator seating on the upper level that overlooks the practice courts, a team lounge and coach’s offices. An upper level lobby within the indoor practice center provides views out over a entry plaza that affords views of the competition courts.

Design

ATHLETICS Hancock Stadium Improvements ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY Normal, Ill.

Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf recently completely improvements to Hancock Stadium at Illinois State University.

The new venue provides ample hospitality options including a variety of 7 suites. The design includes a 650 sqaure-foot President’s suite and a 500 sqaure-foot Athletic Director’s suite.

Stadium improvements include the installation of new bleachers, a new ticket building along with concessions, a new press box, a stadium club for 550 spectators and a new main entry to the stadium.

ATHLETICS Sports Complex HENDRIX COLLEGE Conway, Ark.

Hendrix College is playing football again for the first time in many years. Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf provided programming, conceptual design and sports design assistance to Fennell Purifoy Architects of Little Rock, Arkansas. The project includes new facilities for football as well as the other established athletic programs at Hendrix.

The new facilities includes a new stadium (1,500 seats, press facilities, hospitality suites, concessions, tickets,) a 25,000 square foot fieldhouse and a planned indoor practice facility.

The fieldhouse serves many sports and includes a weight room, home and visitor locker rooms, support facilities as well as classrooms and offices for the Hendrix College Kinesiology Department.

ATHLETICS Bart Kaufman Baseball Stadium INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

The new baseball venue for Indiana University is located on the north edge of IU’s athletic campus near the 45/46 Bypass. The field is 100% artificial turf.

Highlights include new stadium seating, new locker rooms, indoor and outdoor hitting cages, turf fields, an 1,800 square foot press box, a scoreboard, sports lighting and sound systems, and two hospitality suites. The complex also features ample parking, entry plazas, picnic areas, concessions and restrooms for fans.

The design uses an “open” concourse stadium concept that seats up to 2,500 people, and allows spectators to still feel engaged in the ongoing game from hospitality and concessions areas.

Browning Day was responsible for programming, design, and master planning for the stadium.

ATHLETICS Andy Mohr Field INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

The new softball venue for Indiana University is located on the north edge of IU’s athletic campus near the 45/46 Bypass. The softball field has a skinned infield and natural grass outfield.

Highlights of the new softball stadium include new locker rooms, indoor and outdoor hitting cages, turf fields, an 1,800 square foot press box, a scoreboard, lighting and sound systems, and a 541 square foot hospitality suite.

The complex also features ample parking, entry plazas, picnic areas, concessions and restrooms for fans.

The design uses an “open” concourse stadium concept that allows spectators to still feel engaged in the ongoing game from hospitality and concessions areas.

Browning Day was responsible for programming, design, and master planning for the stadium.

ATHLETICS Cardinal Park Master Plan UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE Louisville, Ky.

This sports and recreational facility is designed to serve students, athletes, staff and the surrounding community. Cardinal Park places the University of Louisville within the top ten percent of colleges and universities in the United States for total athletic facilities, and its facilities for female student athletes are ranked in the top five percent.

The landscaped areas and facilities create a front lawn to the University. Key elements include a women’s softball stadium, 20,000- square-foot support facility, picnic pavilion, competition soccer field, 400 meter running track, field event area, cardio path, sand volleyball courts, playground, indoor and outdoor tennis center, field hockey stadium and natatorium.

Browning Day provided master planning and programming to the University on this project.

STUDENT HOUSING The Overlook at Riverdale MARIAN UNIVERSITY Indianapolis, Ind.

The Overlook at Riverdale is a newly constructed graduate student apartment project at Marian University. The 92,000 square-foot building provides 136 beds in 88 apartment units for students in the College of Osteopathic Medicine. The four-story building offers a total of nine different unit layouts, varying from one to three bedrooms.

Each bedroom is a single occupancy room with a bathroom immediately adjacent. To maintain residents’ privacy, one of the bathrooms can be accessed from the common area of the apartment. The kitchens come equipped with top of the line finishes including granite countertops and stainless steel faced appliances.

Common amenities shared by building residents include a lounge, workout room, and a concrete patio overlooking the Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab. Parking is provided in a beautifully landscaped lot adjacent to the building, in addition to a smaller remote parking lot.

STUDENT HOUSING Drew Hall MARIAN UNIVERSITY Indianapolis, Ind.

Drew Hall is designed for the 21st century student, offering comfort, safety, flexibility, and recreation.

Currently the tallest building on campus, Drew Hall, houses 144 upper class students on four floors. This residence hall offers one and two bedroom suites, each with a private shower, toilet room, sink area, kitchenette, and a common gathering space. The building’s amenities include cable television, Wi-Fi networking, and a 24-hour laundry room.

The four-story brick exterior building has community kitchens and lounges on each floor.

Outside, a volleyball court, a bricked courtyard, and a fire pit are available for students’ recreational use. Drew Hall is handicap accessible and features handicap accessible rooms on all floors. The design follows LEED guidelines and other sustainable programs. Submission will be determined by the university.

STUDENT HOUSING Aquinas Hall ST. CATHARINE COLLEGE St. Catharine, Ky.

This project on the campus of St. Catharine College in St. Catharine, Ky. is a four-story student housing building.

This residential building has approximately 37,800 square feet and provides 100 student beds, a two-bedroom director’s apartment, and support spaces.

STUDENT HOUSING Erickson Hall INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY Terre Haute, Ind.

The six-story renovation turns Erickson Hall into a 260-bed residence offering double occupancy rooms clustered around a pod shared toilet/shower room. In addition to the pod style living units, the facility features classrooms, support spaces and the Office of Residential Life Services.

The first floor contains a front student porch, snack area, laundry room, apartments, common space, and other support rooms.

The Office of Residential Life Services is also housed on the first floor. The lower level are opened to daylight and have three multi-use classrooms.

An integral part of the First Year Initiative, whose goal is to provide amenities that will make the transition to college life smoother for freshmen students, Erickson Hall is a coed residence that offers Academic Theme Communities for Criminology/Criminal Justice, Exploratory Studies and Psychology.

STUDENT HOUSING Alpha Phi Sorority House UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY Lexington, Ky.

Located in a prime location across from the William T. Young library on the campus of University of Kentucky, this new house for the Alpha Phi International Women’s Fraternity sets a new standard for comfort, quality, and design in sorority housing.

The 21,000 square foot building can accommodate 48 women in addition to a housing mother. Amenities include a fullservice commercial kitchen with a dining room able to accommodate 80 people in addition to a large chapter and recreation space with a capacity of 200.

Browning Day worked closely with the university to demolish the existing building and build on their property with a long term lease. A close collaboration with the university allowed the construction process to go smoothly despite the very fast track.

STUDENT HOUSING Alpha Phi Sorority House Interior Design DEPAUW UNIVERSITY Greencastle, Ind.

This project consists of an interior remodel of the Alpha Phi sorority house on the campus of DePauw University and a feasibility study for a future renovation.

For this phase, Browning Day focused on updating the interiors of the house to increase the residents’ comfort. New finishes and equipment were provided for the first floor public spaces including a formal room, an informal lounge, an entry space, dining, and bathrooms. The ultimate goal was to provide the sorority with an updated, more comfortable house, given that their house had not been updated in decades. The design team wanted the end product to recognize the ideals and values of the sorority through the design, while ensuring that it appropriately serves their needs. The project was completed in time for the beginning of the Fall semester in 2013.

STUDENT HOUSING Aloha Tower HAWAII PACIFIC UNIVERSITY Honolulu, Hawaii

Aloha Tower is the most recognized building in the state of Hawaii and second only to Diamond Head as Hawaii’s most famous landmark. Owned by the State of Hawai‘i and listed on both the Hawai‘i and national Registers of Historic Places, it was planned to undergo a transformation to turn this landmark into a 300-unit student dormitory and a multiuse complex.

Located on a waterfront site on Honolulu Harbor, the 160,000-square-foot, two-story waterfront marketplace was designed to put student housing on the upper floor with retail, dining and entertainment options on the first floor.

The second floor was planned to be converted into 75,000 square feet of chic urban lofts, enough to house more than 300 students as well as resident advisors, and perhaps visiting faculty and other university guests.

PERFORMING ARTS BUILDINGS Ray E. Cramer Marching Hundred Hall INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

Indiana University Ray E. Cramer Marching Hundred Hall will feature a 7,900 square-foot rehearsal space, two smaller rehearsal rooms at 1,900 square feet each, instrument storage and repair, uniform storage and associated support space such as office space and meeting rooms.

All practice rooms will be acoustically isolated from one another.

The building provides the band with an adjacent relationship to the basketball and football facilities where they perform. On game days, the marching band will emerge from the building at the corner and proceed to the football stadium.

The exterior of the building is constructed of architectural load bearing precast concrete and finished to emulate the look of limestone, which complements the existing buildings on campus.

The $10 million project is estimated to be completed by November 2017. The project is seeking LEED Gold.

PERFORMING ARTS BUILDINGS Musical Arts Center Addition INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

Browning Day architects designed an addition to the Indiana University Musical Arts Center (MAC) that features two rehearsal rooms and a recording studio space. The spaces have been designed to be acoustically isolated from one another and are connected by a generous lobby that also connects to the existing MAC. This design provided the Jacobs School of Music with two state-of-the-art rehearsal rooms and the combination of these spaces allow for the recording of large orchestra performances and small ensembles.

The 17,000 square-foot addition was designed to emulate the existing building, while being scaled to fit within the surrounding campus landscape. The exterior of the building is predominately load bearing precast concrete with accent areas of limestone, metal panel and curtain wall, which complement the existing buildings on campus.

The addition was completed in May 2016. The recording studio space will be completed in April 2017.

PERFORMING ARTS BUILDINGS Bryan House Addition INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

Browning Day architects designed a plaza and sunroom that was added onto the Bryan House residence, a 1924 Georgian style home settled in the heart of the original campus and once home to the university president.

The project includes a 1,300 square-foot sunroom addition on the west side of the existing residence, along with a new and expanded exterior patio area, which wraps around the addition and ties in to the amphitheater project also by Browning Day. The basement of the existing residence was also renovated to provide accessible restroom facilities.

The sunroom addition provides a much-needed space for entertaining visiting dignitaries, donors, staff, and students for various events, along with facilities to support these events that were lacking in the existing residence.

The addition expands the residence using exterior materials and details that are in the same material palette of the existing residence.

Construction was completed in November 2016.

PERFORMING ARTS BUILDINGS Schrott Center for the Arts BUTLER UNIVERSITY Indianapolis, Ind.

The LEED Gold certified Schrott Center for the Arts is a 450-seat venue for music and theater, with the primary purpose of providing teaching space for Butler University. The theater is located near Clowes Memorial Hall, and responds to the theater and music departments’ needs for a mid-sized performance facility. The project is designed to meet the particular requirements of choral, orchestral, and theatrical productions, and includes a lobby, green room, dressing rooms, and other support spaces. Due to its relationship with other buildings on campus, the exterior design employs a mix of buffcolored architectural precast concrete and ashlar-pattern Indiana limestone veneer.

The precast panels are ideal to enclose the tall volume, and provide the mass necessary to isolate the audience chamber and the stage house from unwanted noise. The hall uses retractable acoustic banners and curtains to tune the room between the needs for a ‘wet’ music environment and a drier theatrical performance space. The hard proscenium opening is adjustable in width from 40-50 feet to meet a variety of performance needs.

PERFORMING ARTS BUILDINGS Lilly Hall Courtyard Building Addition BUTLER UNIVERSITY Indianapolis, Ind.

The Lilly Hall Addition and Renovation is the first phase of a planned, four-phase Performing Arts Complex at Butler University. The Lilly Hall Courtyard Building Addition provides performance and teaching spaces for the Departments of Music, Theater and Dance.

Spaces include three new dance studios, an instrument practice space, two choral studios, a ‘black-box’ theater and electronic music studio. Also provided are office areas for several independent Indianapolis Arts Groups.

The modulating concrete and limestone panel exterior expression emulates the neighboring structures, existing Lilly Hall and Clowes Memorial Hall, unifying the three distinct buildings into a harmonious composition. The transparent, glazed curtain wall element and projected canopy identify the primary entry to the facility, and offers a regional gesture as a beacon to the 46th Street entrance to campus.

PERFORMING ARTS BUILDINGS Eidson Duckwall Recital Hall BUTLER UNIVERSITY

Indianapolis, Ind.

The Eidson Duckwall Recital Hall is the second phase of the Jordan College of Fine Arts’ Performing Arts Complex at Butler University.

Through the use of sound reflective materials such as plaster and wood, this remodel and addition provides an acoustically correct recital venue for students, faculty and guests.

The 140-seat house is an intimately scaled room, filling a niche not only for Butler, but for the community.

The facades are scaled and proportioned to be a harmonic and sensitive addition to the original Georgian Revival structure. Extensive detailing in wood, brick, limestone and slate, all materials found on the original building, conveys an honest and successful venture in matching the 60-year old design and construction. Since the recital hall coexists with admissions, financial aid and other important campus departments, the design signifies entry to the recital hall, while allowing the balance of the building to retain its place on campus.

PERFORMING ARTS BUILDINGS Center for Visual & Performing Arts EARLHAM COLLEGE Richmond, Ind.

The Earlham College Center for the Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) is the new home of the arts at Earlham, bringing studio arts, theater and music under one roof.

Pending LEED Gold Certification, this stateof-the-art facility features a generous amount of natural light, and welcoming social spaces created through the use of large glass windows.

Browning Day’s design of the landscape architecture includes a versatile central arts plaza that doubles as an outdoor performance venue.

The building features occupancy and photocell sensors that compliment a whole-building control package. Site plantings and softscape were selected to be native, durable and minimallyirrigated. The outdoor “amphitheater” created between Runyan Center and CVPA is a multipurpose space for impromptu and seasonal performances and rehearsals, showcasing the talent of students and faculty.

CAMPUS OPEN SPACE Conrad Prebys Amphitheater INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

The long awaited implementation of former Indiana University President Herman B. Wells’ vision for an outdoor performance venue was recently brought to life by Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf. The Conrad Prebys Amphitheater was built in conjunction with the university’s continuing commitment to supporting the arts and humanities. It is nestled into the hillside adjacent to the Bryan House in the heart of Indiana University’s Bloomington campus. The inspiration was largely by the Scott Outdoor Amphitheater in Swarthmore, Pa., which is an outdoor space that incorporates a series of stone steps into a grassy area surrounded by trees.

BEFORE

The amphitheater includes 300+ pieces of custom, machined and hand-carved limestone that was locally sourced, a seating capacity of around 275 people, a bluestone paving stage area, accessible paths to the Bryan House patio, preservation of area trees, luscious landscape plantings, and site and landscape lighting. A sunroom was added to Bryan House as well as landscaping and an exterior patio for entertaining and fundraising events. It has an 80-person capacity.

PLANNING & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Riverdale Gardens Restoration MARIAN UNIVERSITY Indianapolis, Ind.

Riverdale is the historic Jens Jensen designed estate that is a part of the Marian University’s campus in Indianapolis and the historic home and grounds of James A. Allison, founder of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Barth Hendrickson, on behalf of Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf and a member of the Friends of Riverdale has been in the process assisting the friends with further analysis of the garden plans for the purpose of phasing future garden restoration projects. This is an ongoing process that involves color rendering and three-dimensional digital massing for the purposes of understanding scale, intent, and overall experience of the spaces in the landscape.

Riverdale is one of the 10 best-preserved Jensen-designed estates in the country and listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to need significant work done to help it sparkle again.

PLANNING & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Stewart Plaza DEPAUW UNIVERSITY Greencastle, Ind.

Opening up a new north-south axis on center with DePauw University’s most historic building, East College, Stewart Plaza is planned to become the heart of campus. With Browning Day as prime site designer, the plaza will knit together a new Dining Center and renovated Union building designed by the Robert A. M. Stern office in New York. Carefully programmed and planned to embrace pedestrian activity and create a “place” on campus, the plaza will feature two fountains that book-end a plaza space on center with the Dining Center. Sensitive grade changes allow for barrier-free access to buildings’ main entries, bosques of trees in a suspended pavement planter system, and varied surface materials including turf, crushed granite, and granite paver and steps.

Subtle theatrical lighting of seat-height walls, fountains, and plant material will welcome students, faculty, and staff at all hours. Many underground utilities were coordinated in order to accommodate sloping walkways and the planned placement of 6” caliper London Plane Trees.

PLANNING & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Jacobs School of Music INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

Browning Day’s landscape architects provided leadership on master plan and coordinated the utility relocation planning for the East Studio Building. Responsibilities included the site and landscape design for a 5.25-acre site with a 20-foot grade change. Great care was taken to embrace existing campus structures and merge the design with its surrounding. To that end, the campus walk connections align with features on the opposite side of Jordan Avenue, located on the west side of the site.

The design created a corner plaza that serves both as a campus space and an arts district gateway at a major entrance to campus, while effectively dealing with accessibility issues from one corner of the site to the main level of the new building.

A west patio space that relates to daily student ingress and egress was provided at the building proper, in addition to areas that can be used for new student orientation. On the south end, a terraced landscape area exposes the lower level studios to daylight and provides great “subterranean” views.

PLANNING & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Site Planning and Landscape Design IVY TECH COMMUNITY COLLEGE Frankfort, Ind.

Browning Day was retained by the City of Frankfort to design parking lots and pedestrian plaza spaces to complement a renovated building that will be transformed into classrooms for Ivy Tech Community College. The project’s challenges include working around newly relocated site utilities including gas, fiber, telephone, electric and cable.

The design provided irrigated landscape planting areas in the asphalt parking lots in addition to lighting for safety and beauty. Both lots are located above fill from past building demolition. Storm water is managed through a combination of pervious concrete, permeable pavers, vegetated swales and drain pipes.

These best management practices help reduce the environmental impact on the adjacent Prairie Creek.

PLANNING & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Campus Landscape Architecture Master Plan TAYLOR UNIVERSITY Upland, Ind.

The Campus Landscape Master Plan focus was to use the newest trends in sustainability and green infrastructure to create engaging, interactive and energy efficient spaces for Taylor University. Work continued on the Central Campus Zone that changed how students, faculty, staff, visitors and donors approached and entered all academic buildings of the core campus area.

Browning Day was significantly involved in the master planning of Taylor University’s Upland campus until August 2007. A multi-year vision was established for the development of building additions, renovations and significant formgiving exterior landscaped space planning.

The conceptual design provided capital needs of several campus spaces, including a Central Campus Zone with a heritage quad, a new entry commons, a woodlands commons and sensitive environmental areas.

After 12 months into the process, the design and construction of a campus stream that accepts and filters stormwater on campus was implemented.

PLANNING & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Campus Landscape Design TAYLOR UNIVERSITY Upland, Ind.

Following a campus landscape master plan by Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf in 2007, Taylor implemented significant places on campus that foster gathering and interaction, that beautify and that create new traditions for students, faculty, and staff.

The Science Quad and main Campus Lawn was constructed in the summer of 2013. It’s main feature is that the space knits the library and new Euler Science Center together via a bosque of Honey locust trees organized in a terraced crushed stone plinth and lawn which offers many sitting options; on dimensional stone, boulders, and moveable tables and chairs.

Flowering cherry trees line sidewalks that connect the buildings and the main north south pedestrian axis on campus connecting the residential zones to the campus academic core.

Circulation and entry plazas were redesigned at the entrances of existing buildings. The geo-thermal outfall for the science center was designed into a water feature that illustrates the rate at which the system is running. The water feature overflows into a new naturalized stream corridor on campus that cleanses the water prior to entering the campus lake.

PLANNING & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Anderson Streetscape DEPAUW UNIVERSITY Greencastle, Ind.

DePauw University commissioned Browning Day to redesign Anderson Street to remove on-street parking and convert it to two-way traffic flow. The street serves as a major entrance to the heart of campus, especially with the addition of a monumental gateway and signage component featuring masonry consisting of brick, limestone and lannon stone. The new street also features brick paver walks, limestone block retaining walls, traditionally-designed street lights with current technology, and street trees. Due to the historic architecture of the existing houses along the street, careful consideration was given to the design of the gateway and the streetscape features to integrate well with the context as if the new street has always existed in its new form.

Triumph Elms provide a stately elegance while new lighting, brick walks and limestone set a tone to compliment the historic fabric of the homes and neighborhood.

The project was delivered as a part of the Stellar Communities program of the State of Indiana.

PLANNING & LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Jordan Avenue Pedestrian Improvements INDIANA UNIVERSITY Bloomington, Ind.

Browning Day was commissioned to redesign the Jordan Avenue corridor on the campus of Indiana University to improve pedestrian safety and enhance aesthetics. The roadway was converted into a tree-lined and medianed boulevard, with identified bicycle lanes and bus pull-offs, creating a refuge for pedestrians and bicycle traffic.

Another benefit of the new pathway is the improved pedestrian circulation from the residence hall on the east side of Jordan Avenue through and between the Musical Arts Center, Simon Music Library and Recital Hall to the west.

In addition to improving safety, the team designed a formal Arts Gateway to campus, initiated by the recently completed Jacob School of Music East Studio Building, the doorway to the university’s music, fine and performing arts district.
