Broward County Public School Students

Broward County Libraries and Broward County Public Schools have partnered to offer students outstanding, free educational resources through the BCL Digital Direct Library Card. Just use your ID number as your new BCL Digital Direct Library Card. Since students are using their student ID number, no physical library card is issued. However, students are encouraged to continue to have a standard Broward County Library card in addition to their Digital Direct card.

All participating K-12 students can now use a BCL Digital Direct Library Card to access Broward County Libraries’ online resources that include: • 24/7 access to library databases including online encyclopedias, reference books and other online resources to help with research projects, papers, presentations, reports and homework • 24/7 access to online newspapers, magazines and other publications • 24/7 access to downloadable eBooks including Sunshine State Readers, classic favorites, popular bestsellers and Spanish-language books • 24/7 access to Rosetta Stone, the language-learning resource that includes lessons on reading, writing and speaking 30 languages • Free access to live, online tutoring in English/language arts, foreign language, science, social studies, writing and math • Free access to online test preparation aligned to Florida standardized tests and the SAT, ACT and GED The BCL Digital Direct Library Card can also help job-seeking teens get free online interview coaching, resume writing help and career planning assistance.

Opt-in forms are available at all Broward County Public Schools. Parents and guardians of Broward County Public School students will have to sign the form for their children to participate in the BCL Digital Direct Library Card program.

Fernando Yurkin

Why is someone who owns the next hot social media platform a regular at Creation Station Business Coworking Hub (CSB)? “Creation Station is the difference between trying and doing,” says entrepreneur Fernando Yurkin. “It replaces distractions with resources!” Fernando credits CSB with launching him on the path to build a business from his passion – sports. Together with partner Nadine Ghanem, whose background is in organized sports, they formed a plan to create Sports Contender, a new social media platform for sports fans. As you read this, they are constructing a pilot program with the Atlanta Hawks pro basketball team!

Fernando Yurkin with partner Nadine Ghanem

The Sports Contender app brings professional teams, players and fans together. A sports team can build a community of followers through Sports Contender by giving the fan base a variety of great reasons to use it, including notifications for pick-up games, sports camps and clinics, exhibition games, celebrity appearances and other franchise events. A rewards structure for participating using mixed reality, like Pokemon GO, is yet another incentive to have Sports Contender as a favorite. “Creation Station helped us put all the pieces together,” says Fernando. Using the free, state-of-the-art office space on Main Library’s seventh floor, the pair made use of the executive conference room with smartboard, video-conference roundtable area and client meeting rooms. “The area is awesome!” says Fernando. If you haven’t seen the space yet, check out a 360 virtual tour: https://accutour.com/virtualtour/ creationstationbusiness/.

Creation Station helped us put all the pieces together. Invaluable to the new business was the expert guidance from the Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC), also located at Main Library, allowing Sports Contender to apply for a patent to protect its new software method. Fernando says he got “a lot of good information” from the library’s monthly Inventor Info Chats, which made him aware of how and why to cover himself. On-site, free Creation Station classes brought the project forward. The duo took web design and Introduction to 3D Printing and is poised to get into the SCORE series, which delves into financing and marketing. “CSB is a great resource area,” notes Fernando. “Everything you need to know is at the library – right outside the door!” And he means literally. Not only did Fernando find books in the collection specifically on sports businesses, but also on writing a proposal and mobile strategies. He and Nadine took an elevator ride to the first floor to make use of Creation Station 3D printers, the only Microsoft HoloLens freely available in a US library and high-end Apple MAC computers. “CSB Coworking Hub is opening up a lot of doors, for sure.” Adds Fernando, “If you are looking to start somewhere…Broward County Library is a great place. It gives you everything to start.”

••••••••••••••• Books and Teddy Bears Bring Holiday Joy

This December, excited preschool children will come to 30 Broward County Library branches to be part of a cherished tradition, Books ‘n’ Bears at the Holidays. Children will enjoy storytelling, songs and refreshments and receive special gifts – a cuddly bear and a new book, often the first book they can call their own. Now in its 31st year, the program is funded by local donors who believe in the importance of early literacy and the joy of the holidays. Director’s Message

Veterans Day

As Veterans Day approaches, Broward County Library looks to new ways the library can open its doors to our local community of veterans and their families. This year, BCL is hosting over 40 programs and events celebrating veterans, including opportunities for veterans to share their personal stories of service, book discussions, concerts, film screenings, crafts for all ages and children’s story times. The whole community is invited to join in, learn and honor our veterans and to create Paracord 550 survival bracelets to distribute to members of our armed services. These bracelets remind those that are serving, or have served our country, that we appreciate their sacrifices and value their efforts. Libraries are committed to working with community partners to provide resources and services to Broward’s Veterans and their families. Library staff have been out in the community sharing information with veteranrelated organizations about what the Library offers, including free, portable Internet through Veterans Connect Hotspot Program. As a veteran, it is my honor to recognize the service, sacrifice, and selflessness of our veterans. Join us at a library near you.
