Florida Center for the Book at Broward County Library invites all of Broward County to join

The NEA Big Read

In the Time of the Butterflffllflies by Julia Alvarez

The Florida Center for the Book at Broward County Library invites readers of all ages to participate in the 2018 NEA Big Read project. The NEA Big Read 2018, a communitywide reading program, is exploring In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez with a full calendar of events including book and film discussions, lectures, visual arts workshops, Dominican Republic cultural programs such as merengue and bachata dance workshops and other family-friendly programs.

A novel is not, after all, a historical document, but a way to travel through the human heart.

~Julia Alvarez

In the Time of the Butterflies is historical fiction based on the lives of the four Mirabal sisters, who participated in underground efforts to topple Rafael Leonidas Trujillo’s dictatorial regime in the Dominican Republic. In 1960, three of the sisters were slain on Trujillo’s order. Their story haunted Alvarez, whose own family had fled just months before the sisters’ assassinations. The novel gives a voice to all four sisters, who speak across the decades to tell their own stories and to describe the everyday horrors under Trujillo’s rule. Through the art and magic of Julia Alvarez’s imagination, the martyred Butterflies live again in this novel of courage, love and the human cost of political oppression.

A limited number of free books are available for those wishing to participate in book discussions and other related activities. For a full listing of NEA Big Read events, please visit Broward.org/Library/Read FEATURED EVENTS January 13 - The NEA Big Read Kickoff at the Chalklit Festival

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE fans

Jennifer and London Holmes

No place beats Broward County Libraries’ Active Learning Center (ALC) for family fun! Opened in June on the second floor of Main Library, the ALC has families streaming in from three counties to use it, like homeschooler mom Jennifer Holmes and her 3 ½-year-old son, London. Jennifer, a military wife who recently moved to Florida, is grateful to the neighbor who told her about the ALC. “We love it!” says Jennifer. “It’s comfortable, homey and a great learning space.” Jennifer appreciates that the ALC is also spacious and airconditioned, offering a luxurious play zone as an alternative to being outdoors in hot, rainy weather. As well as being a social place, the ALC is a professionally designed learning environment. Designed to look like a seaside village, the ALC allows children up to age five the opportunity to explore, pretend and get creative with books, props and playthings. London, who wants to be a law enforcement officer one day, can’t wait to get there, strap on the police helmet and dive in with the other happy kids.

Jennifer and London are so enthused about the ALC that Jennifer, brimming with ideas,

is planning on becoming an ALC volunteer. As a future children’s book author, she is also looking forward to Broward County Library’s many free writer’s workshops, found on the online calendar, and learning Spanish with Rosetta
