Summer at Your Library

Broward County Library’s annual Summer Learning Program features a summer of amazing events, entertainment, enrichment, prizes and fun for children, teens and adults. This year’s theme is “Color Our World,” an invitation to explore with events, opportunities and experiences to delight, enrich and amaze.

Read & Learn for Prizes

Reading over the summer helps prevent learning loss in children and teens and builds skills that maintain or improve academic proficiency scores. Adults can read for enjoyment, explore our many digital resources and attend library events, all of which model good learning behaviors to children and teens. Start now by registering your entire family for our Summer Challenge (via Beanstack) at Broward.org/Library/Summer. We have reading challenges for all ages, from Early Learners to Children to Teens to Adults.

Track your summer reading, activities and challenges for chances to win great prizes including:

• Experiences from the Florida Panthers, Margaritaville Hollywood Beach, Jungle Queen, Water Taxi, and more.

• Tickets and coupons for Wendy’s, Museum of Discovery and Science, Young at Art Museum, Frost Science Museum, Pines Ice Arena and more.

Explore Free Events

Discover free programs, classes, workshops, shows, games, stories for all ages and interests. Venture out of your comfort zone and try a new hobby, sport, book genre, craft or topic for free, with us, as we spend the summer learning, exploring art and color together. This year’s presenters include Young at Art Museum, Marine Environmental, Education Center, Miami Children’s Museum, Mad Science of Palm Beach, Musica with Sarah, Museum of Graffiti, Arty Van Gogh Bus Collaborative Art Project, NSU Art Museum Docent Speakers Bureau, and more.

Greetings and Hurray!

It’s summertime and Summer Learning Time!

I’m looking forward to a dazzling summer of exploration, discovery and joy at our library. Over the next three magical months, we get to open our creative inner paintbox and let loose! We have something at the library planned for every age group!

Kids and adults can read for prizes during Summer Learning. Get in on the fun by using the Beanstack app, which allows users to participate in a summer challenge, log their reading, complete activities, and earn digital

DIRECTOR’S DIRECTOR’S

badges. Sign up for Beanstack online or at any library.

This year’s theme is “Color Our World!” which sounds pretty exciting to me. May I say that we are tickled pink to roll out the red carpet and offer you a green light for a golden opportunity that comes along once in a blue moon? Be silly (I couldn’t resist), have fun, and jump into this season’s programs for a full-spectrum rainbow of good times.

Something I’m really enthused about is the Crayon Initiative, where customers can bring their old crayons to any local Broward County Library branch to donate them to be recycled into new crayons for kids in the hospital. Color me happy!

We are also creating Tiny Art this summer. Pick up your 4x4 canvas at your local library any time after June 1. Create your masterpiece and then bring it back to have it displayed at the library.

We love connecting and entertaining you, but every summer there’s more than recreation going on, especially for kids. Studies and personal stories tell us how critical it is to not to let children’s academic skills lapse when school is out of session. This decline is known as the “summer slide.” One of hundreds of studies (Progress Learning, May 2025) revealed that between 70% and 78% of students experience a decline in math skills over the summer, with reading skills affected as well.

A sure way for kids to stay at their best is through Boundless eBooks for children and teens, available free through the library’s mobile app. Parents will love Boundless because it saves them a ton of money on the  Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) and Florida Teens Read books that students in grades 3 to 8 are encouraged to read over the summer.

Adults also fall behind or get rusty with skills they don’t use. Take a step up with our Universal Class for 600 free courses for business or personal growth, online and at your own pace, and stay sharp.

Summer is certainly for grown-ups too! I hope you’re planning to join me at the Director’s Book Club. In June, we get into Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H, and in July, Challenger by Adam Higginbotham. These are both nonfiction accounts that peer into an inner world that we would otherwise never encounter. The first book is the memoir of a queer Muslim immigrant, and the second book makes you an insider among the people of the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster. Something I love about books is that they open us up to

people and places far removed from our everyday lives and beyond our boundaries. Let’s color our world and expand it!

As you know, we are always ready to strengthen skills and turn learners of all ages into high achievers. What are you ready to achieve? Get us involved and color us READY – we are at your service!

Wishing you a dynamic, connected and colorful summer!

Sincerely,

DIRECTOR’S
