Greetings! Director’ s MESSAGE

It’s been an active and eventful summer at Broward County Library (BCL) as we immersed ourselves in every shade of colorful fun. I hope you went bold and brilliant and are ready for more great programs coming your way. I can’t wait!

One of the special observances that I look forward to in the fall is Hispanic Heritage (September 15 to October 15). It’s impossible to live in south Florida and not feel the rhythm of its vibrant, dynamic Hispanic culture. Let’s get into the spirit with distinguished authors, IFEILE Afro-Cuban Dance, and Señorita Marci’s Bilingual Show for the whole family. Find Hispanic

literate, informed population that participates and votes. Please circle September 8 on your calendar for our Each One Teach One Volunteer Recruitment Drive, where we show potential volunteers our program to teach adults to read and write. The ability to read is the greatest gift you can give another person!

September 16 is another important day: National Voter Registration Day. Did you know that on any date, you can register and check your voter registration status online, or come to any Broward County library for assistance? We’re proud that many BCL locations are convenient polling places, and five of them are permanent Supervisor of Elections branch offices. Portuguese for Beginners

ALLISON’S

Voting in a democracy is a privilege and a necessity – please exercise your rights to keep them!

For families, autumn also means back to school. It’s a sweet spot in the year when parents are looking for some well-deserved downtime and the kids are excited about their next grade adventures. Now is the moment to become familiar with the long list of free services we offer students that keep money in your pocket.

Among the many things BCL does is get children professionally prepped throughout their school days, whether they are entering kindergarten or college. For example, would you rather borrow assigned books from us than buy them? Download Boundless mobile app for required and desired reading, from picture books to grade 12.

Adult readers will be fascinated by Patrick Radden Keefe’s Empire of Pain , my Director’s Book Club selection for this month. It’s an in-depth look at the billionaire Sackler family and how they made a fortune with the prescription drug Oxycontin while escaping accountability for the public health crisis it caused.

My A-list has me thinking that September will be an exceptional month to explore a new language, open yourself to creating art and appreciating music, and letting another person discover the world-expanding joy of reading. Make September rewarding…for yourself and others!

Sincerely,

TO COM DIRECTOR’S BOOK CLUB

Director Allison Grubbs discusses thought-provoking books. Read the book or listen to the audiobook, then get together with Allison to talk about it.
