Greetings! Director’ s MESSAGE

I love the final quarter of the year when so many special holidays come one after another, beginning with one of my favorites, Halloween. I look forward to being surprised by the creativity in costumes and décor. Join us for dance parties, trick or treating, contests, photo shoots and storytimes to show off your wild side.

Veterans Day is another holiday we observe, and I invite you to drop by the Lauderhill Towne Centre Library between Monday, October 20, and Thursday, November 6, to write a letter to a U.S. veteran for Operation Gratitude. Your kind words of encouragement will go a long way and will be included in a care package. Let’s make a difference and honor those who have served our country.

Gratitude is something we can never show enough to those who support us. We appreciate our heroes and champions, which certainly includes those amazing Florida Panthers. Historically, they have been great partners to the library, even winning the 2025 Outstanding Library Business/Media Partner awarded by the Florida Library Association (along with back to back Stanley Cups, of course). We appreciate the generosity of the Panthers Foundation and the commitment of team members during the library’s Summer Learning Program and the Panthers’ Summer Reading Tour, which brings Panthers players and personalities to libraries for fun activities, giveaways, and Panthers story time. Go Cats!

While I am being grateful and counting my blessings, I cannot leave out the freedoms guaranteed to us as Americans by our

Constitution. It’s recorded in the National Archives that on October 2, 1789, George Washington sent congressional amendments to the Constitution to the states for approval; we call these “the Bill of Rights.” To this day, the Bill of Rights guarantees as law the basic rights of Americans. Join us on October 7 at North Regional/Broward College Library to learn about the origins and significance of these inalienable rights and the role that libraries play in protecting them.

An amendment that that I am especially passionate about is our First Amendment, which states, “Congress shall make no law… abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” Observe Banned Books Week 2025 with us, October 5-11, at a variety of programs. This year’s theme is “Censorship Is So 1984 - Read for Your Rights,” highlighting the persistent attempts to ban or restrict content or access to books in libraries, schools, and bookstores, and the importance of defending our freedom to write or read as we wish.

A book that I would heartily recommend is the October’s selection for my Director’s Book Club:  Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. In this unusual work of fiction, a widow working as a janitor at an aquarium befriends a giant octopus that helps her solve the mystery of her teenage son’s disappearance.

Enjoy an October of fantasy fun and an appreciation for what is precious and real!
