Broward County Library March Magazine 2026

Page 1

Greetings! Director’ s MESSAGE

When Ben Franklin cautioned, “Neither a borrower nor a lender be!” he was thinking about lending money – not the first communal library in America, which he founded. Because books were rare and expensive in colonial America, Franklin devised a plan to share the cost by subscription, allowing people to use without owning. Genius!

Today books are more affordable, but we’re using Ben Franklin’s idea for those other items. Why buy when you can borrow, free of charge?

We have so many things to lend to you at the library. Have you looked at our Gear to Go page?

Whether you need a wi-fi hot spot, an acoustic guitar and lessons, trackers for your electrical expenses, robots, or binoculars for birdwatching – we’ve got them. Need super expensive equipment for audio/video production, large format printing, or virtual reality gear? Look no further than using it free at a Creation Station. And please don’t tell me you’re buying or renting video games when we have over 2,000 in our collection!

ALLISON’S A-LIST

“Tell Your Story! It’s Your Write!”

Between Two Worlds: Jewish Culture and Religion through Yiddish Literature

Africana Arts & Humanities Festival We, Too, Sing America

That’s as much as I have space for here, but be sure to browse the Directory of Services to investigate what opportunities to save money you might be missing. Next month, I will mention a few more gems.

Speaking of great things to share…let me tell you about my Director’s Book Club selection for this month, Liz Moore’s The God of the Woods . This mesmerizing read about a prominent family’s dark secrets has been hailed by People magazine as “Best Thriller” and The New York Times as “Best Crime Novel” of the year and “Best Thriller.” I’m curious to hear how you rate it!

March is Women’s History Month, which we proudly celebrate by screening films, hosting speakers, crafting and book clubbing. For ages 13 and over, learn confidence and safety with the Coral Springs Police Department at a women-only self-defense awareness course (Northwest Regional Library).

Have a marvelous March full of cultural exploration and financial wizardry!

Sincerely,

DIRECTOR’S BOOK CLUB

Cover Story: Lifelong Learning

Meet our newest library cardholder!

Miss Ollie Glover is getting her first library card at the age of 98, but her life has been filled with learning and education. Miss Ollie left school after the fourth grade but taught herself how to read and write. She was 12 when her parents brought Miss Ollie and her eight siblings to Pompano Beach from Georgia, seeking better employment opportunities working on vegetable farms. She later worked in the Pompano Library at its former location, long before it was a part of the Broward County Library system.

She raised seven children of her own right here in Broward. “She is a loving mom; she is a caring mom. I’m proud I have a mother like her,” says her son, Warren. Another son, George, served Broward County as a mail carrier and a bus driver, in addition to his service in the Army.

On February 3, 2026, Miss Ollie visited the Pompano Beach Library and Cultural Center to get her very first library card. We are happy to have Miss Ollie as our newest library customer.

Signing up for a library card is fast and easy. Visit any BCL branch to start your learning journey!
