Director’s Message
There’s one thing that all living creatures have in common: Each of us is someone’s child. And like the New Year 2022 that begins this month, a new life is a clean slate, full of promise, excitement and uncertainty. Accordingly, in this season of fresh beginnings, I have the perfect read to share with you. The NEA Big Read 2022, a communitywide reading program featuring the graphic novel, The Best We Could Do, by Thi Bui, is happening this month. This true story is my personal pick to talk about with you face-to-face. Make a date to do that with me by registering for one of my Director’s Book Club events on January 19th, 26th or February 24th. I know you’ll feel moved once you experience The Best We Could Do, coming at a perfect time when life changes are on our minds. Now…What if you were not changing just one aspect of your life, but everything – all at once and with no safety net? A strange, new country, a language you don’t speak, frightened children to support – what would that be like? How would it feel to be that parent or that child? Through her stirring images and words, Thi Bui takes us there. What are your New Year’s resolutions for change? Want to get in shape, find a better job, learn a trade, master the computer, start a business, write and publish a book – or all of the above? Whatever you have in mind, the library has the resources and staff to help you make it happen. The top of the year is when we take stock and make life-changing decisions for ourselves and perhaps for our families. This January, we are beginning a fresh and exciting new year, full of possibilities for you and the public library. Our New Year’s resolution at Broward County Library (BCL) is to make this your most successful year ever. We aim to get you going in the right direction with a slew of opportunities that we have in store. There is so little space here to tell you about so much that is just waiting for you at BCL. I suggest subscribing to our bi-weekly newsletter and monthly magazine. They’re free and loaded with library news that I would love to see you benefit from. So, start the year with success on your radar!

Sincerely, Allison Grubbs
