Director’ s MESSAGE

Greetings!

April has a lot in store for us. For starters, it’s Volunteer Appreciation Month and National Poetry Month. Let’s thank an adult or teen volunteer and read a great poem. Better still – I invite you to become a library volunteer and a poet yourself!

I really appreciate the library’s stellar volunteers, the Friends , who make it possible for us to offer top-notch

programming. These folks are dedicated to making each of our libraries an indispensable resource to its community. Our Friends support us in many ways, including raising funds by holding book fairs and assisting with special events. We would love to welcome you to a Friends group – as a volunteer or a sustaining member.

Since it’s National Poetry Month, why not jump into the ongoing, bi-weekly Poets @ Heart, Poetry Writing Group at North Regional/Broward College Library? Come spend an evening with fellow poets workshopping your original poems. No judgement, just encouragement and camaraderie.

Pinwheel Festival & Resource Fair
Jazz Around the World Concert Customer Appreciation Day
Concert with Matthew Sabatella

It’s National Library Week from April 6 to 12 and a time to celebrate YOU, our library customer. Drop by on April 9 at any library location for a special treat and salute from us. As you know, we love a party here! I cannot think of anything more worth celebrating than our community of readers and our next generation of readers, beginning with newborn babies ages six weeks to crawling at Southwest Regional Library, Davie/Cooper City Library, and Northwest Regional Library.

Books and music are two of my passions. Be ready to jam in April! Deerfield Beach/ Percy White Branch’s Blues School will host Senior Moments: The Unforgettable Band; The Music Club of Hollywood partners with Matthew Sabatella for A Folk Music Concert at the Marta-Beth Friedman Stirling Road Branch; and Carver Ranches Branch will present a Jazz Around the World Concert. Speaking of music, let me point you in the direction of Freegal, one of our free, fabulous eMedia resources.

Freegal is a treasure trove of over 18 million commercial-free songs from over 93,000 music labels from over 100 countries. Freegal features not only today’s top hits, but also all-time favorites going back into the past century. It contains over a million classical tracks; strong collections in jazz, world music, country, alternative, blues, gospel, Christian, and kids’ music; and many other genres and types of music. Download the app, insert your library card number, and enjoy free of charge!

Here’s to a delightful April…walk, run or crawl in to see us!

Sincerely,

Allison Grubbs

COVER STORY: MEET GILLY Wags & Tales Ambassador!

“Kids who are just learning to read, kids who are fluent readers but maybe they’re shy, or maybe they lack a little bit of skills interacting with others, really benefit from the program.”

Wags & Tales is a program for children with reading difficulties. Certified Animal Assisted Therapy or Education dogs visit libraries to help children strengthen their reading skills. The Humane Society of Broward County and Broward County Libraries established Wags & Tales in 2001.
