7TH ANNUAL SOUTH FLORIDA BOOK FESTIVAL

Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21 The 2018 South Florida Book Festival at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) will feature a fantastic line-up of authors, speakers, renowned chefs and presenters. Enjoy book discussions, talks and signings; free workshops; cooking demonstrations and more.

The two-day event starts with “Eat, Drink, Read: A Literary Culinary Experience” on Friday, July 20th from 6:30-9:30PM. At this over-21, ticket-required reception, attendees can sample literary-inspired culinary selections, enjoy craft cocktails and wine and meet celebrity chef/ cookbook authors.

Taymer Mason, a Caribbean sensation specializing in vegan cuisine; and Melba Wilson, Harlem restaurateur and soul food superstar.

The $40 ticket for Friday night, is all-inclusive for food, cocktails, live entertainment, gated parking and a complimentary book of your choice from any of the 2018 South Florida Book Festival authors. Proceeds benefit The Friends of AARLCC, which sponsors programs for children and adults. Tickets are available at the door or online at Eventbrite.

Main Library is one of only 50 libraries in the U.S. that has received a grant from the American Library Association and PBS to host events and programs in conjunction with PBS’ eightpart TV series and multi-platform initiative celebrating the joy of reading and books.

Broward County Library, in partnership with Florida Center for the Book, invites the community to take part in a new, ongoing initiative: Local Authors @ Broward County Library, beginning July 9th.

Local Authors @ Broward County Library spotlights the work of resident Broward County authors who have written and self-published an adult or children’s fiction book. Local authors who are interested in submitting a book for consideration must be a Broward County resident, a Broward County Library cardholder and have selfpublished an adult or children’s fiction book.

The following libraries will add selected titles by local authors to their collection of materials: African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, Main Library, North Regional/Broward College Library, Northwest Regional Library, South Regional/ Broward College Library, Southwest Regional Library and West Regional Library.

A DOCUMENTARY FILM AND DISCUSSION SERIES ON OUR IMMIGRATION EXPERIENCE Main Library has received a grant to host “Becoming American: A Documentary Film and Discussion Series on Our Immigration Experience.” The series uses documentary films and texts to engage the public in a study of the history of America’s immigration experience.

The series consists of six programs, each built around a different facet of that experience. Each program features either a complete documentary film, or excerpts from longer documentaries, to provide the basis for a scholar-led discussion. Dr. Stephen Engle, Professor at Florida Atlantic University, will lead the discussions. The series is free and open to the public.

“Becoming American” is a project of City Lore in collaboration with the Immigration and Ethnic History Society and the International Coalition of the Sites of Conscience. The project has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor.

What they uncovered was something that our guard had been unsuccessfully searching for on his own for some time: a better income for his family. In his fifties without a formal education and few computer skills, finding work was not easy.

But as a husband and father, John (not his real name) was determined to find full-time work to afford more for his three daughters, all under the age of twelve.

“John really wanted his daughters to thrive. He was very proud of them, showed me their photos, and spoke about tutoring them on the drums and flute,” says Chinedu. “He was clearly motivated as a parent — a reason the family relocated from the Caribbean.”

In addition to watching the library’s assets, John had been watching Chinedu assist his customers. “He said he was very impressed with the way that I help people,” says Chinedu. “He finally approached me and asked if I would help him find a more lucrative position with additional hours.”

As a skilled librarian and an immigrant himself, Chinedu was happy to help John achieve his goal. “I showed John how to use key words and filters to do a computer search and introduced him to websites to improve and post his resumé, like Career Transitions.”

Within three weeks, John found a full-time job security job. “He was really excited – ecstatic!” recalls Chinedu, who shared in the triumph.

“My parents brought me to this country as a toddler in 1987 from South East Nigeria in search for a more prosperous life for our family.

I can relate.”
